Everything to Know About the New iPhone 16: Apple Intelligence, Camera Control, and More
Time is Running Out For Deals on Apple, Samsung, and Garmin Smartwatches: Save Up to $150 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission. Apple unveiled new products at its Glowtime event on Monday, including the newest iterations of the Apple Watch and AirPods. As usual, the star of the show was the iPhone, which will be available in four iterations: the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The new phones will be available for pre-order tomorrow and hit shelves on September 20. Every year sees subtle tweaks and the occasional big leap, so it's not always clear when (and if) you should upgrade. Preorders start on September 13, but you can pre-pre-order by making your selections at Apple's website now, and your cart will be saved when the pre-order window opens. Here's what's brand new, better, and the same with the iPhone 16. Related: Apple Rarely Holds Sales, But You Can Get Its Tech for Up to 55% Off Right Now Apple, known for driving innovation, found itself in the unfamiliar spot of playing catch-up. With many brands rolling out AI features, the Cupertino company took its time following suit, but the new iPhone 16 is Apple's first smartphone built for the AI age. Dubbed Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI is designed to enhance writing tasks and create visuals, while improving Siri. Apple has also set itself apart with its commitment to privacy, and privacy and security features are built into Apple Intelligence. There are caveats, however. Apple Intelligence is the big new feature, but it won't actually be available until next month when iOS 18 comes out. The new iPhones are built from the ground up with Apple Intelligence, but older models aren't excluded; Apple Intelligence will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as on iPad and Mac with the M1 chip and later. Also new to the iPhone is a Camera Control button, a simple but clever upgrade that makes it easier to take photos. The capacitive button can open the camera app and take photos, a game-changer for anyone who's fumbled trying to open their camera app only to miss the perfect shot. Camera Control will be available on all iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 16 will utilize the new A18 chip, which Apple says "delivers a huge leap in performance and efficiency." Apple was short on specifics but has touted a big improvement in battery life. Of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, Apple says "With the new internal design and advanced power management of iOS 18, the batteries are optimized to offer a big boost in battery life." With regards to the Pro models, Apple is even bolder, stating they've made a "huge leap in battery life," with the Pro Max model offering "the best battery life on iPhone ever." In terms of durability, the Ceramic Shield screen is touted as being "2x tougher than glass on any other smartphone." Photo quality remains a big focus for Apple, and the camera hardware has been upgraded with a 48MP "Fusion camera." Apple says it "enables a 2x optical-quality Telephoto option, which is like having two cameras in one." All iPhone 16 models are inheriting the iPhone 15 Pro's customizable Action Button, which means iPhone users now get two quick-access buttons, Camera Control and the Action Button. It's an interesting pivot back to physical buttons, given that Apple famously did away with the home button after the iPhone 8. One pleasant detail that's remained the same is the price. The new iPhone 16 starts at $799, the same price as the iPhone 15 when it originally dropped. It's also the same price as Samsung's Galaxy S24. With the 16 starting to hit shelves, Apple has cut the price of the iPhone 15 by $100. Other details that have remained the same are USB-C, Dynamic Island, and the Super Retina XDR display. On the iPhone 16 and Plus models, iPhone has kept the same screen size as the iPhone 15. However, the screen on the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 6.9'', compared to 6.7'' for the 15 Pro Max. Likewise, the iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3'' screen compared to the 15 Pro's 6.1'' screen. The iPhone 16 is also the exact same size as the iPhone 15, but if you were hoping to use the same phone case, you're out of luck. The addition of a new capacitive button requires a compatible case. Fortunately, the best phone case brands are ready to go, which means you can already order an iPhone 16 series case before you even get your hands on the new phone. Here are a few options.

Should You Upgrade to the iPhone 16
The release of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models has generated significant buzz in the tech world, with Apple promising notable advancements in camera technology, battery life, and AI capabilities. As users contemplate whether to upgrade their current devices, it's essential to delve into the key features and improvements offered by these new models. This article provides an in-depth exploration of the iPhone 16 series, helping you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and preferences. While the overall design of the iPhone 16 series remains consistent with its predecessors, Apple has introduced two significant additions to enhance user interaction: the camera control button and the action button. These new buttons offer users more intuitive and efficient ways to navigate and control their devices. It's worth noting that major design overhauls are typically expected every three years, so those seeking a drastic change in appearance may need to wait a bit longer. One of the most impressive aspects of the iPhone 16 series is the substantial upgrades to the camera system. With an enhanced ultra-wide camera and multiple lenses, users now have access to a wide array of photo and video options, catering to both casual snappers and professional content creators. The introduction of spatial photos and videos compatibility with Apple Vision Pro opens up new possibilities for immersive and interactive content creation. For those who demand the highest quality in their visual content, the Pro models offer advanced capabilities such as 4K 120 Dolby Vision and Apple log shooting. These features provide professional photographers and videographers with the tools they need to capture stunning, cinema-grade footage directly from their iPhones. Battery life is a crucial factor for many users when considering a smartphone upgrade. The iPhone 16 series addresses this concern with incremental improvements in battery performance. The Pro models, in particular, benefit from a physically larger battery, ensuring longer usage times between charges. Additionally, the entire iPhone 16 lineup supports faster wireless charging up to 25 watts, significantly reducing downtime and allowing users to quickly top up their devices when needed. Apple has long been at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence into its devices, and the iPhone 16 series takes this to new heights. Enhanced AI features are a key highlight of the new models, with the Pro versions benefiting from a dedicated AI chip. This chip optimizes performance for tasks such as visual recognition and real-time processing, making the iPhone 16 Pro a powerhouse for AI-driven applications and experiences. Under the hood, the iPhone 16 series features a new Pro chip, delivering better CPU and GPU performance compared to previous generations. This upgrade is particularly beneficial for gaming enthusiasts, as the iPhone 16 Pro models now support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. This technology enables more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections, providing a truly immersive gaming experience on a mobile device. When deciding whether to upgrade to the iPhone 16 or 16 Pro, several factors come into play. For users currently using an iPhone 13 or 14, the improvements in camera capabilities, battery life, and AI features are significant and may justify the upgrade. However, those who prioritize a major design refresh might consider waiting, as rumors suggest a more substantial overhaul in the next iteration. It's also worth noting that the iPhone 16 series introduces new colors and finishes, as well as slightly smaller bezels. While these changes may not drastically alter the overall appearance, they contribute to the premium look and feel that Apple is known for. Ultimately, the decision to upgrade depends on your individual needs, preferences, and budget. If you heavily rely on your iPhone for photography, videography, or AI-driven tasks, the iPhone 16 Pro models offer compelling reasons to make the switch. However, if your current device still meets your needs and you're not particularly drawn to the new features, waiting for a more significant upgrade might be the prudent choice. The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models represent a significant step forward in Apple's smartphone lineup, with notable advancements in camera technology, battery life, AI capabilities, and performance. By carefully weighing the key features and improvements against your specific requirements, you can make an informed decision on whether upgrading to the iPhone 16 series is the right choice for you.

iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 15: Consider these reasons before you upgrade to Apple's latest model
The new iPhone 16 improves on the iPhone 15 by introducing AI features and a series of hardware changes, but should you take the leap just after one year? The big day is here: Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 16 series which consists of the base model, the iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and the 16 Pro Max. Whenever a new generation comes out, there is one question on every iOS user's head -- is it worth upgrading? Also: iPhone 16 hands-on: So packed with features, I almost forgot about its Pro model Some would argue "not really" because so much of the next-gen smartphone family is still unproven, as impressive as they may be at first glance. The iPhone 16 introduces a subtle yet impactful design change, generative AI (gen AI) to the iOS ecosystem, camera updates, and more. People not interested in these updates or on a budget may want to purchase last year's iPhone 15 instead. It's still a great phone. To help you make this decision, we've broken down all of the most important details for the Phone 15 and iPhone 16 below. We also included a couple of alternatives at the bottom. Apple is rolling out multiple AI features to the iPhone 16. Chief among them is the long-awaited Siri upgrade. The iOS assistant is much smarter than before as it is now aware of on-screen content, can better understand commands even if you stumble over your words, and can switch between text and voice inputs. This is just the tip of the iceberg, too, as Siri will fully integrate itself with ChatGPT later in the year. Also: Your AIrPods Pro 2 can soon double as over-the-counter hearing aids. Here's how There is more to the AI features beyond Siri. Apple Intelligence will be able to summarize notifications and Priority Messages in the Mail app. Like Siri, the feature will be able to understand context. Apple Intelligence will gain additional features later in the year like the ability to create custom emojis and perform multiple actions across apps. The iPhone 16 is seeing a new camera array. On the back will be a 48MP Fusion camera serving as the main lens. It'll have a 2x Telephoto option for up-close photography. Apple states it'll be like having "two cameras in one." Alongside it will be a 12MP Ultra Wide lens with an autofocus function that can enable "macro photography." It can also take in "2.6x times more light [than before] for higher image quality." Also: The 5 best iPhone 16 Pro features that enthusiasts will care about On the side below the Power Button is the new Camera Control. It's a tactile switch with a special sensor that can perform unique actions with a light touch. For example, pressing it quickly launches the Camera app for taking quick snapshots or recording a video. It even introduces a preview feature to help you frame the shot. And if that wasn't enough, it'll work with third-party apps. Powering the iPhone 16 will be Apple's A18 chipset which the tech giant claims "delivers a huge leap in performance and power efficiency." Its processor is 30 faster than the iPhone 15's A16 Bionic chip and requires 30 percent less power for the same workloads. The GPU on the iPhone 16 is better too, boasting a 40 percent speed boost over the previous generation. Gamers, in particular, will appreciate the stronger performance. Apple says players will enjoy higher graphical fidelity and consistent frame rates. The tech giant says the iPhone 16 will house a better battery. At the time of writing, it's unknown what Apple has done to improve the batteries. However, it revealed that it updated the internal design of the iPhone 16 to allow for a larger power source and "to better dissipate heat". All of the bells and whistles on the iPhone 16 are certainly nice, but are they must-haves? To many people, probably not. Generative AI still has its' issues despite advancing rapidly in the past couple of years. Apple Intelligence and the new Siri may be great, but we wouldn't be surprised to see users encounter performance problems or hallucinations. Also: iPhone 15 review: Why I recommend this model even to 'Pro' users in 2024 Sometimes, it's best to wait until all the bugs have been ironed out. Plus, there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding the chipset. Early impressions indicate the A18 can handle all the AI features, but can it? Or will we see a performance drop once it launches? With the release of a new model, older phones often see a price drop, and that is exactly what we're getting here. Apple has cut the price of the iPhone 15 by about $100 off its digital storefront to entice new adopters. It wouldn't be a bad pick-up, either. The camera system of the previous generation is great to this day, the A16 Bionic chip is still plenty powerful, and the Dynamic Island is a welcomed addition. You can enjoy a similar camera performance. Plus, you won't be bogged down by nascent AI features you may or may not ever use.

iPhone 16 vs. iPhone 13: The Big Changes Apple Made in Three Years
Apple's iPhone 16 lineup has arrived, and if you are considering an upgrade from the iPhone 13 or earlier, there's a lot of new hardware and features that could make this a noticeable upgrade. The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max were unveiled at the Apple's Glowtime event on Monday, and even the base models feature noticeable design changes from Apple's earlier iPhones. The biggest changes to the $799 iPhone 16 include a dedicated Camera Control button, the trickling down of the Action button from last year's iPhone 15 Pro and the inclusion of the Apple Intelligence platform meant to take advantage of generative AI for summarizing text or creating new emoji, among other features. However, if you're hanging on to an iPhone 13 from 2021 and considering an upgrade, then there are even more advances in the iPhone 16 that you should keep in mind when determining if this is the year to replace your phone. several differences to consider apart from the ones mentioned above. Here are some key differences, or you can scroll down to our specs charts below for a side-by-side comparison. The iPhone 16 features a 48-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, compared to the dual 12-megapixel cameras on the iPhone 13. This should allow for better image quality as well as more advanced photography features on the iPhone 16. The iPhone 16 is powered by the newer A18 chip, which in theory should make it much faster than the A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 13. It also enables new AI features. The iPhone 16 supports Apple Intelligence, which includes a more context-aware Siri, built-in writing support and audio summaries, among others changes.https://www.trustedreviews.com/versus/apple-iphone-16-vs-iphone-13-4556175The timeline and rollout of these AI-based features aren't clear. But the iPhone 13, which is due to receive iOS 18, will not be able to support several of these features due to hardware limitations such as its current chipset. Apple switched to a USB-C port in its iPhone line away from its Lightning port starting with last year's iPhone 15. This change was largely driven by European Union regulation that prohibited Apple from selling iPhones in the bloc in 2025 unless it had USB-C. The iPhone 13 uses Apple's proprietary connector, so you'll likely need to replace your charging cable. Apple does include a USB-C cable in the box, and so you'll just need to make sure it works with your charger adapter. This is a pill-shaped cutout first graced 2022's iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, and is now a signature feature on the iPhone. In essence, it's an area on top of the iPhone's display, which serves as an interactive hub and shapeshifts depending on the apps you are running. The Dynamic Island is not available on the iPhone 13. You can read more about it in our explainer. All in all, perhaps the biggest changes will be the quality of your photos with the newer iPhone 16, access to Apple Intelligence and other features that the iPhone 16's newer processor can take better advantage of. However if you keep the iPhone 13, you will get iOS 18 and several new features like RCS texting and new homescreen customization controls. Many of those features will also come to even earlier iPhone models, with the iOS 18 update set to hit devices as far back as 2018's iPhone XS and XR. Some of the more minor considerations include the Dynamic Island, the new hardware buttons such as the Action button, the Camera Control button and the USB-C port.

iPhone 16 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro: Should you upgrade to Apple's latest model?
If you have an iPhone 13 Pro and are wondering how it compares to the new iPhone 16 Pro, let's break down the differences. Apple announced its new iPhone 16 Pro this week, and it comes with an impressive arsenal of hardware updates. Like every year, springing for the latest and greatest is tempting, but it can be costly. If you're like me and have an iPhone 13 Pro from several generations back, you probably wonder if the upgrade is worth it. Also: Everything Apple announced at iPhone 16 event: AirPods, Apple Watch Series 10, AI, more The answer depends on what you need from your phone (and what condition your 13 Pro is in). Assuming it's still in good shape, the major differences between the two come down to the massive jump in hardware available on the 16 Pro. That means more memory, a significantly faster processor, a bigger battery, and a much better camera. Oh, and you get access to Apple Intelligence. Let's take a look at these two devices side by side and highlight the differences. To put it bluntly, the camera on the iPhone 16 Pro blows the 13 Pro out of the water. The 48MP fusion camera on the 16 Pro is capable of producing high-resolution photos and videos, which, along with the 5x tetra prism zoom lens (and 25x digital zoom) has the potential to create some truly exceptional images. The iPhone 16 series also introduces a new Camera Control button, bringing a physical element to photography that will certainly resonate with some folks. For example, a light press on the button will focus on the subject, while a hard press snaps the shot. Pressing and holding will take video. Also: Apple adds Google Lens-like Visual Intelligence to the iPhone 16 camera Conversely, the camera on the 13 Pro is no slouch, but it just doesn't compete with the top-tier hardware Apple included on the 16 Pro. Also, the camera on the 16 Pro is identical to the one on the 16 Pro Max, making the Pro a good option if your main motivation for getting a new phone is to upgrade your camera. Apple is releasing a handful of new AI features with Apple Intelligence, its company-first generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) technology, but it's only going to be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and up. If you use Siri and you want to take advantage of all the new features going into it, you'll want to upgrade. Also: 6 reasons why iOS 18 makes the iPhone 16 a must-upgrade for me The new and improved Siri has awareness of on-screen content and can communicate far more easily with more complex voice commands. Additionally, it can respond to physical gestures like nodding your head and is able to switch between text and voice inputs, which is a first for the virtual assistant. To top it off, Apple insists that all of this is only the beginning, with Visual Intelligence (its answer to Google Lens) and Chat-GPT integration coming later this year. The A18 Pro processor on the iPhone 16 Pro is a big jump forward in raw power and battery efficiency compared to previous models, and those numbers get bigger the further you go back. For example, the A18 Pro is 30% faster than the A15 Bionic chip on the 13 Pro, and despite being lighter, has more power and lasts longer. If your 13 Pro is running out of space or starting to feel sluggish, the upgrade will feel like a big leap forward, especially because all the new features rolling out with Apple Intelligence will need all that power supplied by the A18 Pro chip. Additionally, Apple has been working to position the iPhone as a serious gaming device, and the new chip's ray-tracing support, better frame rates, and more sophisticated heat dissipation support that fact. If you are into mobile gaming, the 16 Pro is a beast. Don't get it twisted; the iPhone 13 Pro is still a great phone. It's not even that old; these phones were released in 2021. If you're like me and you make it a point to take care of your tech, there's no reason to upgrade your phone if your current one is still doing just fine. While it's true that the hardware on board the 16 Pro is powerful, high-end hardware doesn't always equate to longevity. Also: The iPhone 16 is undeniably great hardware - but you should still probably skip it Also, it's no surprise that Apple Intelligence is not fully ready yet. Many of the features Apple discussed at its keynote aren't yet available, reducing the sense of urgency on running out and getting a new 16 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro starts at $1,000 for the lowest-tier memory configuration and goes up to $1,500 for the most expensive 1TB version. These are not cheap phones, by any stretch, and most people will want to justify the purchase before making the purchase. There are some good trade-in deals this year, but if you've just finished paying off your old phone, it might be smarter to wait until the next line of devices comes out. The iPhone 13 Pro still has a solid hardware package, with the A15 Bionic chip's six-core CPU competitive enough to compete against even newer smartphones on the market.

iPhone 16 Pro Vs. iPhone 15 Pro: Should You Upgrade To Apple's Latest iPhone? - Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)
On Monday, at the "Glowtime" event, Apple Inc. AAPL released its next-generation iPhone 16 smartphones. Naturally, consumers are faced with the question of whether it is worth upgrading their already existing one-year-old premium model to iPhone 16 Pro. For those who are trying to understand whether the upgrade is worth the investment, here are the key differences between iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models: Display Size, Design, And Build The iPhone 16 Pro features a 6.3-inch display, an upgrade from the 6.1-inch screen on the iPhone 15 Pro. While both iPhones feature an OLED display with ProMotion technology, Apple has brought down the minimum brightness on the iPhone 16 Pro to 1 nit, which should help in improving the battery life even when always-on display is enabled. Both models have a high-end titanium frame, but the iPhone 16 Pro introduces a new blasted titanium finish that provides a more polished texture. The iPhone 16 Pro includes an upgraded Ceramic Shield front glass, which is twice as strong as that of the iPhone 15 Pro. For current iPhone 15 Pro users, the decision to upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro may not be compelling unless the upgraded camera capabilities, larger display, and improved processing power are significant draws. The incremental upgrades suggest that while the iPhone 16 Pro is a worthy device, it may not offer enough of a leap for every user to justify the switch.
