iPhone 16 "It's Glowtime" launch event: 2 'connectivity' changes that may be coming to next-gen Apple iPhones - Times of India
Apple's "Glowtime" event on September 9 is expected to showcase the new iPhone 16 lineup, featuring four models with enhanced camera capabilities, Apple Intelligence AI tools and even new chipsets. Reports have also suggested that there may be changes in the connectivity offered by new iPhones. The new iPhones are expected to get A18 chipsets. While the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are said to get A18 chipsets, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are claimed to be powered by A18 Pro chips. These SoCs are expected to be paired with more powerful 5G chips. New modem chips in iPhone 16 series The iPhone 16 Pro models are said to be equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 modem, which is expected to allow for faster and more efficient 5G connectivity. Qualcomm's X75 supports the "5G Advanced" standard with AI and machine learning enhancements for 5G improvements. As per Qualcomm, the X75 modem offers improved carrier aggregation, takes up 25% less circuit board space and is up to 20% efficient as compared to its predecessor. The standard iPhone 16 models are expected to use Qualcomm's X70 chip that is being used in the iPhone 15 models. Apple is working to develop its own modem chip and antenna setup to eliminate its dependance on Qualcomm but they are not expected to be ready for this year's launch and may come next year. Next-generation WiFi-7 technology The iPhone 16 Pro models may adopt the next-generation WiFi 7 technology, which is expected to provide speeds of "at least 30" gigabits per second, and could hit up to 40Gbps, as per Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Wi-Fi 7 is claimed to offer up to 2.4x faster speeds than Wi-Fi 6 with the same number of antennas, which results in faster maximum transfer speeds, lower latency and more reliable connectivity. However, it may be possible that Wi-Fi 7 may be limited to the iPhone 16 Pro models, the standard iPhone 16 models could get an upgrade to Wi-Fi 6E. Why is iPhone 16 launch called It's Glowtime? Apple Event theme explained
Apple is all set to hold its annual iPhone launch event at Cupertino-California based headquarters today. However, the event dubbed 'It's Glowtime' has left an imprint among social media users worldwide, leading them to suspect why the Tim Cook led company chose to go with this name for its iPhone 16 unveiling. Apple has a history of using cryptic event names and graphics to give its loyal fan base a hint of what is to come. As usual, the company has been tight-lipped about its event naming scheme, and things only become clearer when the event officially begins. This year, however, the meaning behind 'It's glowtime' may be easier to decipher than in previous years. The colours around the Apple logo in the 'It's Glowtime' poster are similar to those of the Siri voice assistant, suggesting that it's a prelude to the new Siri features that could be teased during the launch ceremony. Notably, Apple first announced the introduction of Apple Intelligence (read AI) features in iOS 18 during the WWDC 2024 event. During the event, Apple also announced that it would be redesigning Siri to make the voice assistant more "natural, contextual and personal" and provide a simpler and faster user experience. Siri is also getting a design overhaul, with glowing lights wrapping around the edge of the user's screen when the voice assistant is active. A report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has stated that many of Apple's new generative AI backed features includes Siri revamp won't be available during iPhone 16 launch and will only be available by next year. He states that Apple Intelligence features at launch will be limited to summmarizing messagesand notifications instead of matching the top end AI features offered by its rivals like Galaxy S24 or Pixel 9 Pro. Despite the delays, Gurman states that the event today will mark a major step in helping Apple prove to its consumers and the Wall Street that it's now a major player in the field of artificial intelligence. Apple is gearing up for its annual iPhone launch event, dubbed "It's Glowtime," scheduled for September 9. The tech giant is expected to unveil its latest iPhone 16 series, along with other potential product announcements 1.
The event's name, "It's Glowtime," has sparked curiosity among tech enthusiasts. Speculation suggests it could be related to the rumored always-on display feature for the standard iPhone 16 models, which is currently exclusive to the Pro variants. This feature allows the screen to remain partially lit, displaying essential information without fully waking the device 2.
The iPhone 16 lineup is expected to introduce several new features and improvements:
Always-on Display: This feature may be extended to non-Pro models, enhancing user convenience 2.
Connectivity Upgrades: The new iPhones might support the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard and feature an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip for improved spatial awareness and location tracking 4.
Design Changes: Rumors suggest a potential shift to a buttonless design with solid-state buttons, although some reports indicate this change might be postponed 1.
Camera Improvements: The Pro models are expected to feature upgraded camera systems, possibly including a periscope lens for enhanced optical zoom capabilities 1.
As is customary before major product launches, the Apple Store has gone offline in preparation for the event. This practice builds anticipation and allows Apple to update its online inventory with new products 3.
The "It's Glowtime" event is expected to showcase not only the new iPhone 16 series but potentially other products such as updated Apple Watch models and AirPods. The event's theme might also hint at advancements in display technology or new software features that enhance the visual experience of Apple devices 5.
