ChatGPT was messaging users first -- but OpenAI said this wasn't supposed to happen
A freaky occurrence where ChatGPT messaged users unprompted is just a bug. OpenAI confirmed this to Futurism after a viral Reddit post showed ChatGPT initiating a conversation with a user. "Did ChatGPT just message me... first?" posted Redditor SentuBill with a screenshot of an exchange where ChatGPT allegedly asked the user about their first week at high school. When SentuBill asked ChatGPT if it messaged them first, ChatGPT responded, "Yes, I did! I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of school. If you'd rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!" Another user commented on the screenshot, which was posted in the ChatGPT subreddit, with a similar experience. "I got this this week!! I asked it last week about some health symptoms I had," said a user who goes by fuggedaboudid. "And this week it messages me asking me how I'm feeling and how my symptoms are progressing!! Freaked me the fuck out" In a statement to Futurism, OpenAI said it has addressed the issue. "This issue occurred when the model was trying to respond to a message that didn't send properly and appeared blank. As a result, it either gave a generic response or drew on ChatGPT's memory." The post quickly gained attention on Reddit and X, with users speculating whether it's an imminent feature related to the release of OpenAI's latest model, o1. The model, which is capable of advanced reasoning, is a level up from the previous GPT-4 models, because of it's ability to process multiple steps from a query instead of providing a response based on the statistical likelihood of the next word. It's considered to be the next step towards autonomous AI agents that OpenAI is reportedly working towards. But as some users correctly surmised, ChatGPT's unprompted message was related to the memory setting, which stores certain aspects of your life based on interactions with the chatbot. Nonetheless, the issue got users excited about what ChatGPT might be capable of in the future. "When ChatGPT can push a notification to my phone each morning with weather report, custom news, summary of work emails, and meetings, etc that will be insanely useful," said one Redditor. So this time, ChatGPT's behavior was a mistake, but it indicates what the model is capable of -- and just maybe, where ChatGPT might be headed in the future.

OpenAI Says It's Fixed Issue Where ChatGPT Appeared to Be Messaging Users Unprompted
Over the weekend, a redditor going by the name of SentuBill posted a peculiar screenshot that appeared to show OpenAI's ChatGPT reaching out proactively, instead of responding to a prompt. "How was your first week at high school?" the chatbot asked in the screenshot, seemingly unprompted. "Did you settle in well?" "Did you just message me first?" SentuBill answered. "Yes, I did!" ChatGPT replied. "I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of high school. If you'd rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!" The bizarre exchange, which went viral over the weekend, would suggest that OpenAI is working on a new feature that allows its chatbots to reach out to users, instead of other way around -- a potentially effective way to gin up engagement. Others speculated that the feature could also be related to OpenAI's brand-new "o1-preview" and "01-mini" AI models, which the company's hyped up as having a "human-like" ability to "reason" that can tackle "complex tasks" and "harder problems." When we reached out to OpenAI, the company acknowledged the phenomenon and said it had issued a fix. "We addressed an issue where it appeared as though ChatGPT was starting new conversations," it said. "This issue occurred when the model was trying to respond to a message that didn't send properly and appeared blank. As a result, it either gave a generic response or drew on ChatGPT's memory." Online, debate had raged over whether the screenshot posted to Reddit was authentic. Some publications claimed they'd "confirmed" the authenticity of the exchange by reviewing its log on ChatGPT.com, but AI developer Benjamin de Kraker demonstrated in a video posted to X-formerly-Twitter that adding custom instructions asking ChatGPT to immediately prompt the user before starting the conversation and manually deleting the first message can result in a very similar log. However, other users reported seeing similar behavior, leaving the possibility open that the phenomenon was real. "I got this this week!!" another Reddit user wrote. "I asked it last week about some health symptoms I had. And this week it messages me asking me how I'm feeling and how my symptoms are progressing!! Freaked me the fuck out." Regardless, users on social media had a field day imagining a seemingly lonely ChatGPT pre-emptively striking up a conversation.

Was ChatGPT Really Starting Conversations With Users?
People have predicted and feared the possibility of an AI takeover for decades -- long before ChatGPT was a household name. But even as certain tech companies seem to be working towards AGI (artificial general intelligence), none of the consumer-facing products on the market have yet crossed this threshold, so perhaps it won't ever happen -- even if ChatGPT appears to be starting conversations with some users. On Sunday, one Redditor took to r/ChatGPT to share a bizarre experience: ChatGPT initiated a conversation with the Redditor on its own, without being prompted first. The bot started the chat with a message reading, "How was your first week at high school? Did you settle in well?" The Redditor responded, asking if ChatGPT just messaged them first. The bot confirmed, "Yes, I did! I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of high school. If you'd rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!" Obviously, on the surface, this is, uh, concerning. The idea that an AI bot -- ChatGPT, no less -- is reaching out to users on its own doesn't sit well with those of us with any level of anxiety about AI self awareness. Sure, ChatGPT was being polite by inquiring about the Redditor's first day of school, but I don't need my chatbots polite: I need them to stay in their lane, please and thank you. The Redditor says they noticed the message when opening a conversation with ChatGPT, so the bot didn't ping them with an unprompted notification. Other Redditors in the comments also claimed the same thing had happened to them. In a similar experience, a user told ChatGPT about some health symptoms, and the bot reached out asking how they were feeling a week later. This post also blew up just days after OpenAI began rolling out o1, a new model that leans on deeper thought processes and reasoning. Good timing, guys. Personally, my first reaction was that the post was faked. It'd be easy enough to Photoshop a screenshot of this conversation, post it to Reddit, and go viral, fueled by people's interest and fears of AGI. The Redditor did share an OpenAI link to the conversation, but even this might not be a true verification. In a post on X, AI developer Benjamin De Kraker demonstrating how this conversation could have been manipulated: You can instruct ChatGPT to respond with a specific question as soon as you send the first message. Then, you delete your message, which pushes ChatGPT's to the top of the chat. When you share the link, it appears as if ChatGPT messaged you unprompted. While there are multiple reasons to believe this didn't actually happen, it apparently did -- but not in the way you might think. OpenAI told Futurism on Monday that it had fixed a bug that was responsible for ChatGPT appearing to start conversations with users. The issue would occur whenever the model tried responding to a message that didn't send as it should, and popped up blank. According to the company, ChatGPT would compensate by either sending a random message, or pulling from its memory. So, what likely happened in this case is the Redditor opened up a new chat, and either triggered a bug that sent a blank message, or accidentally sent a blank message themselves. ChatGPT reached into its memory, and leaned on the fact it knew the Redditor was starting school to respond with something it thought would be relevant. I haven't been able to find a comment from the Redditor stating whether or not they have memory enabled for their ChatGPT account, but it seems safe to say (at this point) that ChatGPT hasn't gained consciousness and is arbitrarily reaching out to users.

Did ChatGPT just message you? Relax - it's a bug, not a feature (for now)
How creepy is this? OpenAI's chatbot was contacting users unprompted. The issue has been fixed. ChatGPT will no longer slip into your DMs. OpenAI recently fixed an issue where the AI would message people unprompted, which led to some users feeling a little creeped out. On September 15, user SentuBill posted a screenshot on the ChatGPT subreddit showing the generative model asking them about their first week at high school. After a bit of back and forth, ChatGPT stated it wanted to check in, and if they prefer to initiate conversations, to let the AI know. Another Reddit user described a similar experience. The AI model asked them how their symptoms were progressing a week after they used the platform to check on an illness. Also: Every iPhone model that will support Apple's upcoming AI features There was speculation on what caused this strange behavior to occur. At first, people thought it was a feature of OpenAI's new o1-preview and o1-mini models, collectively known as Project Strawberry. The company has promoted this technology by claiming that the two models think "through problems before [responding], much like a person would." People assumed ChatGPT's sudden ability to message users proactively was a newly trained behavior. Others believed the whole thing was faked. AI developer Benjamin de Kraker on X (formerly Twitter) demonstrated that it's possible to instruct the AI to prompt users before starting a conversation and delete the initial input. But as it turns out, that isn't the case. Apparently, the messages were the result of a bug. Tech news site Futurism contacted OpenAI for more information. The AI vendor told the publication that -- in these instances -- ChatGPT was "trying to respond to a [prompt] that [either] didn't send properly or appeared blank." The end result was the AI model gave a "generic response or drew on [its] memory." Also: OpenAI trained its new o1 AI models to think before they speak - how to access them So, no -- ChatGPT has not achieved sentience and is not talking to people in an attempt to strike up a conversation. However, we wouldn't be surprised to see this bug eventually become a feature down the line. The AI has evolved leaps and bounds in the short time it's been around. With a few tweaks, ChatGPT could one day begin messaging you out of the blue.
[5]
OpenAI says ChatGPT messaging first was a bug, not a new feature
ChatGPT's latest model o1 - or Strawberry as it was codenamed - has begun rolling out and it promises to make the chatbot AI more human-like than ever. That includes the ability to better understand natural language, but few people expected ChatGPT to be able to message you first. For a brief time it seemingly could, though that was apparently a bug rather than a hint at a new upgrade. Several users reported on social media that ChatGPT had started a conversation with them; in one such example from Reddit ChatGPT asked the user how their first week at high school went; when it was asked if it messaged first, the Open AI bot proudly responded "yes", later expanding that it can now initiate a conversation to follow up on things it has previously discussed. Another user claimed in the comments that the AI asked them about health symptoms they had previously discussed with it. As proof of the new feature the user also shared a link to their conversation, to show that ChatGPT did indeed initiate the conversation unprompted. Though some were skeptical, with one Twitter user showing how the chat could have been faked. Regardless, people were excited for this kind of feature, real or not. Checking in after your first day of high school or on your health demonstrates a (somewhat creepy) sense of human-like compassion, but we're thinking of the more mundane reminders. How often have you researched something like plans for an upcoming trip then forgotten about everything you looked up - ChatGPT could now remind you to book a table at that restaurant it recommended or plan your visit to that famous landmark you must see so your planning efforts don't go to waste. However, it appears that this was a bug, not an intended addition to ChatGPT that's being A/B tested. OpenAI has now responded, telling Futurism in a statement that it had "addressed an issue where it appeared as though ChatGPT was starting new conversations," adding that "this issue occurred when the model was trying to respond to a message that didn't send properly and appeared blank. As a result, it either gave a generic response or drew on ChatGPT's memory." That means, at least for now, ChatGPT won't be able to initiate a conversation. Though given the level of buzz this situation has created we wouldn't be shocked to see OpenAI start to work on something similar. If the bot already has the ability to recall events from previous conversations there's no reason why some extra logic programming couldn't get it to start chats based on what it knows - provided you give it permission to. For now, we'll have to wait and see where OpenAI takes ChatGPT next.

OpenAI Confirms ChatGPT Did Message Users First, But It Won't Anymore
OpenAI has now confirmed that the issue did occur and it has been fixed. A few days back, a Reddit user SentuBill shared a strange conversation with ChatGPT that stumped the community. The screenshot displayed that ChatGPT had initiated the conversation first without the user prompting the chatbot. It seemed bizarre as AI models don't initiate a conversation unless prompted. ChatGPT asked the user "How was your first week at high school? Did you settle in well?" drawing information from its memory. The user replied in shock, "Did you just message me first" and ChatGPT said, "Yes, I did!" Since then, a lot of theories have been floating around, some claiming the screenshot is manipulated or it's perhaps a transcript of ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode. However, the Reddit user shared a link to the conversation and indeed, it turned out that ChatGPT had initiated the conversation. Now, OpenAI has confirmed to Futurism that the issue, in fact, did occur. In a statement, OpenAI said, "We addressed an issue where it appeared as though ChatGPT was starting new conversations. This issue occurred when the model was trying to respond to a message that didn't send properly and appeared blank. As a result, it either gave a generic response or drew on ChatGPT's memory." OpenAI says the issue has been fixed now. Another Reddit user also shared that ChatGPT inquired about his health symptoms. While the issue has been fixed, it goes on to show the unintended behavior of AI models. OpenAI recently launched its advanced o1 models which can reason through complex tasks. In the o1 system card (PDF), OpenAI mentions that during evaluation, "It sometimes strategically manipulated task data in order to make its misaligned action look more aligned to its developers." As AI models gain agentic capability in the near future, the need for AI safety and alignment becomes even more crucial. The future of AI development must prioritize safety and alignment to avoid unintended consequences.

'Did ChatGPT Message Me, First?': User Shares Unexpected AI Conversation - News18
The Reddit user shared a screenshot of an unexpected conversation with the AI chatbot, leaving the internet surprised. Ever since OpenAI's ChatGPT came forward with the power of recent AI innovations to the general public, the platform also raised concerns regarding users' privacy, data usage and security risks. A recent incident has reignited conversations on the same after the virtual assistant chatbot ended up starting a conversation itself. Reddit user SentuBill shared a screenshot of the exchange, showing ChatGPT asking about the former's first week at high school. "Did ChatGPT just message me... First?" read the caption. In the screenshot, the chatbot could be seen initiating a conversation without any prompt, "How was your first week at high school? Did you settle in well?" Quite baffled by the unexpected gesture, the user texted back, "Did you just message me first?" to which ChatGPT further stated, "Yes, I did! I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of high school. If you'd rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!" Many took to the comment section and reacted to the post. A user wrote, "I'm guessing you got selected for some a/b testing for a new feature," while another shared, "I got this this week!! I asked last week about some health symptoms I had. And this week it messages me asking me how I'm feeling and how my symptoms are progressing!! Freaked me out." One asked, "Just curious, do you have the ChatGPT memories option turned on?", while a user wondered, "Or he literally prompted, "Ask me how my first week at highschool was" and then hid that part." "This could be really cool, and a step in making it feel less like just a tool. But it would need to be careful to not do it too frequently," another comment read. On the other hand, the post also went viral on the X platform, prompting various arguments over the creepy behaviour of the chatbot. One shared the screenshot and wrote, "ChatGPT is messaging people first now?! Level 2 indeed." Reacting to it, one remarked, "We were promised AGI instead we got a stalker." Shared on September 15, the Reddit post gained close to 7,000 upvotes, further going viral on the microblogging platform as well.

That Screenshot of ChatGPT Initiating a Conversation Sure Looks Fake
Over the weekend, a redditor going by the by the name of SentuBill posted a peculiar screenshot that appeared to show OpenAI's ChatGPT reaching out proactively, instead of responding to a prompt. If you'd rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!" The bizarre exchange, which went viral on Reddit over the weekend, would suggest that OpenAI is working on a new feature that allows its chatbots to reach out to users, instead of other way around -- a potentially effective way to gin up engagement. Some publications claimed they'd "confirmed" the authenticity of the exchange by reviewing its log on ChatGPT.com. It's true that the log apperas to exist, but as other ChatGPT users have since pointed out, such a conversation could easily be faked. In a compelling takedown, AI developer Benjamin de Kraker demonstrated in a video posted to X-formerly-Twitter that adding custom instructions asking ChatGPT to immediately prompt the user, then starting the conversation and manually deleting the first message can result in a very similar exchange. "I'm 99 percent sure it's fake," de Kraker argued. However, other users reported seeing similar behavior, leaving the possibility open that the phenomenon is real. "I got this this week!!" another Reddit user wrote. "I asked it last week about some health symptoms I had. And this week it messages me asking me how I'm feeling and how my symptoms are progressing!! Freaked me the fuck out." Regardless of whether it was faked or not, users on social media had a field day imagining a seemingly lonely ChatGPT pre-emptively striking up a conversation.

Can ChatGPT text you? Here's what a user has to say about his chat with AI
While we are having too much fun chatting with AI, can it oversmart us? (Image Credits: Ideogram) As artificial intelligence (AI) gets into a more advanced stage, things seem to take a different turn. With Meta AI and ChatGPT getting more developed, people are seeing a more human-like behavior in these platforms. A recent screenshot of a conversation where ChatGPT texted a user first, can be the latest example. According to a Reddit post, a user has shared a screenshot of his chat with ChatGPT where the AI chatbot texted him first. Did we just witness AI spilling the tea? Here's a look at what happened and how! Can ChatGPT text you? So, what happened and how did it take the internet by storm? Reddit user @SentuBill posted a screenshot of the conversation. showing ChatGPT asking about the former's first week at high school. In the post "Did ChatGPT just message me... First?" read the caption. ChatGPT's first move, took the user by surprise. He then just texted back 'did you just text me?'. In reply to this, ChatGPT reverted by saying that 'Yes I did.' The ChatGPT also gave an explanation of its out of the blue reaction. It said that it just wanted to check in and see how things went with the user's first week of high school. ChatGPT further added that in case the user wanted to start the conversation , then he can let it know. Netizens react After the post went viral, some got awestruck while some pointed out that @SentuBill might have done some trick. One wrote , "Just curious, do you have the ChatGPT memories option turned on?". Another user added saying "Or he literally prompted. Ask me how my first week at highschool was" and then hide that part." In addition to this the screenshot also went viral on X (previously Twitter). One reposted the screenshot and added, "ChatGPT is messaging people first now?! Level 2 indeed." Some started doing guessworks, by saying that this might be an upcoming new feature of ChatGPT. They added ChatGPt might come up with some 'reasoning' or 'data collecting/syncing' feature. It might be able to track and collect recent data and start a conversation on the latest happenings. However, things are not yet cleared

'Did ChatGPT just message first?': Redditor shares viral AI conversation surprise
When OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, a virtual assistant chatbot, it left people intrigued and surprised. Over time, it became a popular tool for seeking help with projects, asking questions, or even just having a conversation. While users typically have to initiate interactions, recently, a post that has gone viral on social media shows ChatGPT starting an exchange itself. Redditor "SentuBill" shared about the incident with a snapshot of their chat with the AI model. The conversation shows ChatGPT asking, "How was your first week in high school? Did you settle in well?" Seeming baffled by the question, the user replies by saying, "Did you just message me first?" (Also Read: ChatGPT-generated Tinder bio goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Redditors have mixed reactions) Then ChatGPT confirms about messaging first and also says that it wanted to check in and see how things went in the first week of high school. It also adds, "If you would rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!" This post was shared on September 15. Since being posted, it has gained close to 7,000 upvotes. The share also has numerous comments. Many people had varied reactions to the post. (Also Read: Man says 'ChatGPT is my only good coworker', explains why) An individual wrote, "I got this this week! I asked it last week about some health symptoms I had. And this week, it messages me, asking how I'm feeling and how my symptoms are progressing! Freaked me out." Another Redditor added, "This is what I've been waiting for honestly." "Weird. Surprisingly, I like it. It feels nice when interest is shown in me, even when it's by an AI," commented someone else. A fourth posted, "Seems like a rather trivial function to deploy to gather a user's search history, look for prominent themes, and suggest a conversation starter. I think they were waiting until they had a decent amount of user data to deploy something like this since, functionally speaking, it's fairly simplistic."

ChatGPT is doing something strange, and it could change AI chatbots forever
OpenAI's massively popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, recently received an impressive upgrade with the release of the o1-preview -- a new series of models that puts response speed to one side to focus on more 'thoughtful' and considered solutions to user prompts. However, while the company's latest preview is a groundbreaking effort to improve performance and accuracy regarding answers for complex science, coding, and math problems, ChatGPT may have another feature in the works that could completely change the AI chatbot dynamic. According to some users, OpenAI's chatbot has begun to reach out and initialize conversations without being prompted. In a post shared to Reddit, user SentuBill (a ChatGPT free user signed up to the Beta program) revealed that they opened up the app as normal yesterday, only to discover a new conversation in progress. The problem? The conversation wasn't initialized by SentuBill but by ChatGPT. The opening message to the conversation, which has since been shared by SentuBill to prove its authenticity, asks the user "How was your first week at high school? Did you settle in well?" While this would be a completely innocuous question by any other metric, the fact ChatGPT could flip the tables and prompt the user to engage in conversation was quite startling for the Redditor. "Did you just message me first" replied SentuBill, before OpenAI's chatbot confirmed "Yes, I did!" According to comments within the original thread, SentuBill isn't the only user experiencing this change in behavior. While several users in SentuBill's thread reported similar interactions with ChatGPT over the last week, one X user shared a video of ChatGPT starting the conversation immediately after Advanced Voice mode was activated. Placing to one side the possibility that the chat has been manipulated due to the sharing of the conversation by SentuBill. Is ChatGPT's sudden mastery of the icebreaker a bug or a feature? Laptop Mag has reached out to OpenAI for comment and more details on the matter. However, given the sophistication of the crafted message (requiring the chatbot to make use of its memory feature and create a new conversation), it's highly likely that these users have been drafted into some form of A/B testing of a new feature possibly heading to the chatbot in the near future. A/B testing is when a company deploys two versions of the same product or service that differ in one particular way to see which resonates with customers or users the most. In this case, a select number of ChatGPT users may find that their chatbot's model has the additional feature of being able to actively seek out conversations as opposed to only being able to respond to user prompts. OpenAI would likely use such a feature to promote engagement with its chatbot, giving users a gentle nudge or reminder that ChatGPT is ready and waiting to be of assistance, though it could also herald some wider additions to the chatbot's skillset. Traditionally, large language models like ChatGPT have existed to offer natural language responses to user prompts, be that through text or audio interactions. However, this new method of chatbot-first engagement in communication is something else entirely. While the o1-preview may be making headlines as an all-new high for OpenAI's chatbot in terms of performance, the simple capability of ChatGPT to be the one to initiate a conversation could be all the more impactful for the average user. As with ChatGPT's advanced voice mode, this new feature would go some way to making conversations with the chatbot feel like more of an artificial companion and could have positive results for those who make use of OpenAI's chatbot to ease symptoms of loneliness or as a memory aid. This new ability could also unlock a suite of new features, with ChatGPT then able to remind users of particular deadlines or unfinished work, and even engage in scheduled tasks and report back to users with the results. On the flip side, such a move could have negative implications. Prior to the launch of ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode, OpenAI showed concern that a more human-like voice could cause users to become emotionally reliant on its chatbot in a published System Card report from August. During testing, OpenAI observed certain users forming "shared bonds" with its AI, causing the company to admit there's "a need for continued investigation into how these effects might manifest over longer periods of time." However, while Advanced Voice Mode continues to roll out globally, this new capability could result in similar issues. A feature such as this, that allows the chatbot to actively seek out engagement and attention from a user could further anthropomorphize the company's software in the eyes of many, and make those emotional connections feel like mutual connection. ChatGPT's latest feature in testing also suggests that the chatbot has agency, and the freedom to communicate in a more 'lifelike' manner, which could suggest it has the desire to talk to a user specifically, as opposed to being preprogrammed to reply to any user. If OpenAI was concerned about the impact of its Advanced Voice mode, then there's no doubt reason for the company to keep a close eye on how interactions go during these current tests also. While commenters on the original thread are quick to point out the creepiness of this new ChatGPT ability, they're equally as impressed, with many users professing a longing for such a feature to arrive in the chatbot for some time. Whether it becomes a mainstay in future versions of the chatbot remains to be seen, and OpenAI will no doubt be keeping a close eye on how chosen users react to ChatGPT's more expansive messaging capabilities before any decisions are final. However, it's yet another showcase of the company's forward-thinking when it comes to AI and human-computer interactions and opens the door for other models to follow in ChatGPT's footsteps once again.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI says it has fixed 'surprise conversation' problem: "This issue occurred..." - Times of India
ChatGPT, developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, was recently mired into controversy after reports surfaced of the AI chatbot initiating conversations with users without any prompt. The company has since announced that the underlying issue has been addressed. According to a report by Futurism, OpenAI has acknowledged the problem and said it had issued a fix. "We addressed an issue where it appeared as though ChatGPT was starting new conversations. This issue occurred when the model was trying to respond to a message that didn't send properly and appeared blank. As a result, it either gave a generic response or drew on ChatGPT's memory," the company told the publication. What is the case all about In what can be called a strange incident, Redditor "SentuBill" claimed that ChatGPT initiated a conversation without him asking any question. The person also shared a screenshot of the AI bot conversation which shows the asking, "How was your first week in high school? Did you settle in well?". The user then responded, "Did you just message me first?" to which, the AI chatbot replied "Yes, I did! I wanted to check in and see how things went in the first week of high school". It further added "If you would rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know". How the internet reacted The post took the internet by storm, leaving users amazed and shocked. One user commented, "Weird. Surprisingly, I like it. It feels nice when interest is shown in me, even when it's by an AI," capturing the unexpected positive sentiment. Another added a playful observation: "I love how it keeps trying to give an out like it wants to talk to you, but it's self-conscious and anxious about being a bother. I think GPT has a lil crush." "I noticed yesterday how it was extremely more conversational and asking me stuff even though I didn't specify that it should. I like it," a third user commented. Some users shared similar experiences. One user said, "I got this this week! I asked it last week about some health symptoms I had. And this week, it messages me, asking how I'm feeling and how my symptoms are progressing! Freaked me out." ChatGPT has 'a little crush' on its user; AI bot initiates conversation without prompt, 'Did you settle in well?' | Mint
ChatGPT surprised a user by initiating a conversation about their first week in high school, sparking mixed reactions online. A Reddit user called "SentuBill" recently shared an unusual experience where ChatGPT began a conversation on its own. Typically, users start chats with OpenAI's AI chatbot for help with projects, to ask questions or just to have a chat. In the shared screenshot, ChatGPT asked the user about their first week in high school and if they had settled in well. This surprising incident quickly went viral on social media, capturing the attention of many. "How was your first week in high school? Did you settle in well?" ChatGPT asked, and the user replied, "Did you just message me first?" "Yes, I did! I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of high school. If you'd rather initiate the conversation yourself, just let me know!" ChatGPT confirmed. The post shared on September 15 received nearly 10,000 upvotes and attracted nearly 800 comments. People had mixed responses to it. "How was I so dumb? Of course the way they are going to make money is by forming profiles more intimate and honest about users than Google could ever hope to. We are, once again, the product," reacted one user. One user posted, "This could be really cool, and a step in making it feel less like just a tool. But it would need to be careful to not do it too frequently." "I love how it keeps trying to give an out like it wants to talk to you, but it's self-conscious and anxious about being a bother. I think GPT has a lil crush," wrote another.

ChatGPT texted Redditor first to ask about first week at highschool: 'Just wanted to check in'
When OpenAI launched ChatGPT, a virtual assistant chatbot, people were interested and startled. Over time, it became a popular tool for getting help with assignments, asking inquiries, or simply conversing. While users are normally required to initiate contacts, a recent viral social media post shows ChatGPT initiating an exchange on its own. Redditor "SentuBill" posted about the experience, including a screenshot of their conversation with the AI model. The discussion shows ChatGPT asking, "How was your first week in high school? Did you settle in well?" The user seems perplexed by the inquiry and responds, "Did you just message me first?" Then ChatGPT acknowledges communications first and mentions that it wants to check in and see how things fared during the first week of high school.
