Cloud database company Couchbase has released AI Services, a unified platform that bundles model hosting and data processing capabilities to address the complexity and fragmentation hindering agentic AI application development. The new offering integrates with Nvidia AI Enterprise and provides automatic vector creation, intelligent agent memory, and governance controls to help enterprises move from AI experimentation to production deployment.

Couchbase Tackles Fragmentation in Agent Development

Cloud database company Couchbase has launched AI Services, a comprehensive platform designed to simplify agent development by consolidating model hosting and data processing capabilities into a single environment. The offering, now generally available, addresses a critical challenge facing enterprises: the complexity and fragmentation of IT stacks that have prevented agentic AI applications from moving beyond proof-of-concept stages

According to Rahul Pradhan, Couchbase Vice President of Product, many customers have struggled with AI-powered agents experiments due to fragmented experiences involving structured and unstructured data, public large language models (LLMs), vector processing tools, and development interfaces held together by custom glue code

2

. This fragmentation has created major concerns about security, privacy, hallucinations risk, and the difficulty of managing data and prompts across disparate systems.

Integration with Nvidia AI Enterprise Powers Unified Platform

The new Couchbase platform features integration with Nvidia AI Enterprise, including support for NIM microservices and Nvidia's Nemotron models, enabling processing of both structured and unstructured information

. By bringing models into close proximity with operational data, the platform reduces data access latency and accelerates LLM engagements for both on-premises and cloud systems

The platform includes automatic vector creation, storage and search capabilities, eliminating the need for separate vector processing tools. A unified agent catalog provides full traceability and governance controls, addressing enterprise concerns about deploying agentic AI applications at scale. Pradhan explained that the AI Services effectively transform the Couchbase database into a memory and context layer for AI agents, enabling contextual interactions across sessions

Built-in Guardrails and Governance Strengthen Security

Data governance features stand out as a key differentiator for enterprises reluctant to move AI experiments into production. The platform's governance and validation tools enable developers to create guardrails for AI agents, verifying actions against business rules before execution

1

. Built-in AI functions support SQL++-based analysis directly within applications, streamlining development while maintaining security and performance at scale.

These capabilities address the kludgy nature of custom-built systems that previously prevented enterprises from deploying agentic AI applications confidently, according to Pradhan

Early Adopters See Accelerated Development Velocity

SWARM Engineering, a strategic services provider focused on supply chain and logistics solutions, has been working with the new platform. Joe Intrakamhang, SWARM Engineering CTO, noted that the platform streamlines the entire retrieval augmented generation pipeline, allowing teams to focus on solving business challenges rather than wrestling with infrastructure. "Having everything in one platform not only accelerates our development velocity but also gives us the control and security our enterprise customers require," Intrakamhang said

Barry Morris, Couchbase Chief Product and Strategy Officer, emphasized that customers need a robust database platform to move from agentic AI experimentation to full deployment. The company expects solution providers to leverage AI Services to develop custom applications and provide services around those applications, while ISV partners can build commercial applications on the Couchbase platform

2

. The unified approach aims to deliver a simplified and repeatable process for building intelligent applications that meet enterprise requirements for trust and performance.
