The new lab will build on efforts by the U.S. technology company's AI research arm to advance the core capabilities of its generative AI model Gemini, among other efforts, Google DeepMind Chief Operating Officer Lila Ibrahim said in a blog post Wednesday. The investment amount wasn't disclosed. Google DeepMind's growing team in Singapore will consist of research scientists, software engineers, and AI-impact experts focused on research and development, it said. The unit has more than doubled its Asia-Pacific team over the past year, Google DeepMind said. Google has announced major domestic and international infrastructure investments this year. It said in October that it would invest 5 billion euros, equivalent to $5.79 billion, to expand its data-center facility in Belgium. Google also unveiled plans last month to invest $9 billion to expand AI infrastructure in South Carolina, as well as $15 billion in India over the next five years with the aim of establishing its first Indian AI hub. In September, it said it would invest 5 billion pounds, or $6.57 billion, to grow AI research and data center infrastructure in the U.K. Other companies such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft are also splashing cash on AI-related investments in Asia-Pacific. The former announced plans in June to spend nearly $13 billion in Australia to expand its data-center infrastructure, coming on top of plans to spend over $5 billion in Taiwan for a new cloud region. The latter plans to invest $3 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure in India.
