The upgrades being pushed out for AI chatbots aren't slowing down, and one of the latest improvements added to Google Gemini is an ability for the AI to remember previous conversations. This allows you to refer back to something you've said the previous day, the previous week, or whenever it was. But do you want that? "Gemini can now recall your past chats to provide more helpful responses," explains Google. "Whether you're asking a question about something you've already discussed, or asking Gemini to summarize a previous conversation, Gemini now uses information from relevant chats to craft a response." For now, this is exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers and those using Gemini in English, though it may roll out to other users in the future. The new memory feature is enabled by default, though you do have some options if you don't want the AI bot remembering everything you've said. The new upgrade is relatively straightforward: It means that chats that stack up in your Gemini app, like files in your Google Drive, can be referred back to whenever you like (ChatGPT recently launched a similar feature). The idea is that the AI will get to know you better, meaning more relevant responses and less repetition. For example, Gemini might remember the sports teams you follow, the music you like, or the hobbies you engage in. When you're asking for news updates or activity ideas, that can be useful information for the bot to have -- film recommendations can skip the titles you've watched already, for example. You don't need to switch this on, as it's enabled automatically. It can also be useful for summaries. Maybe you want to summarize the day's chats so far, or you've forgotten what you've already talked to Gemini about through the course of the week. You can just make a request using natural language: "What were we talking about yesterday?" for example, or "summarize everything we chatted about last week." Based on our testing, this all works rather well, though it's not perfect -- Gemini will sometimes forget details (or more likely, pick out the wrong ones), and give you responses that make no sense. On the whole though, it's a useful addition to Gemini's features, as long as you don't mind keeping everything on record. Note that this is separate to the information you can tell Gemini about yourself by clicking Settings and Saved info (on the web), or by tapping your profile picture (top right) and Saved info (on mobile). This feature lets you commit key details to Gemini's memory, such as what your occupation is, or the foods you like, or how you'd like Gemini to respond to you (with simple, informal language, for example). The idea of Gemini remembering everything you say to it may be raising a few red flags for you, and it's worth remembering that most of the time you're using AI tools, you're also helping to train them. This is the case with Gemini, and your chats might even be reviewed by humans, in order to improve Gemini and its AI models. You can read the full Gemini Privacy policy online, and it's worth noting this part of it: "Please don't enter confidential information in your conversations, or any data you wouldn't want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our products, services and machine learning technologies." Google doesn't let you opt out of having your chats used in this way, but you can specify that the chats aren't to be stored at all, or should be deleted after a certain time period. It depends how you want to balance your privacy and digital data trail against the convenience of having all your AI conversations available to review and recall. To find these options on the web, click Activity inside the Gemini app; in the mobile apps, tap your profile picture (top right), then Gemini Apps Activity. On the next screen, you can turn off the Gemini chat history altogether -- which essentially means conversations are deleted as soon as you're done with them. You can also wipe everything that's been gathered so far, as well as erase individual chats. If you'd rather have Gemini automatically delete your conversations after a certain amount of time, you're able to choose between 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months (and you still get the manual deletion options too).

"Whether you're asking a question about something you've already discussed, or asking Gemini to summarize a previous conversation, Gemini now uses information from relevant chats to craft a response," writes Google's Dave Citron. While this may set a few privacy alarm bells ringing, nothing has changed in terms of the controls users have over their Gemini data: Past conversations can be wiped from the record after a certain time period, or never stored in the first place. If you don't do this, your chats may be used to further train Google's AI models. You may remember OpenAI added conversation search to ChatGPT back in November, so Gemini isn't the only AI tool like this experimenting with persistent memory. As yet, it's not something I've seen in other chatbots such as Copilot or Perplexity. Log into Gemini using a premium account with your language set to English, and you should get the new update automatically. You can ask about previous chats using the same natural language that works with any other Gemini conversation. Anything like "what were we talking about yesterday?" or "summarize today's chats so far" will work. In my testing, it's mostly pretty accurate, with links back to earlier chats, though there were one or two glitches. I asked Gemini for film recommendations and the chatbot remembered that I'd said I liked David Lynch movies in a previous chat -- a good example of the memory feature working well. As I generally delete AI chats, I couldn't dig back further into records from previous days or weeks, which might be more of a test. The privacy controls here haven't changed. Click Activity in the left-hand panel (on the web), or tap your account picture then Gemini Apps Activity (on mobile): The next screen lets you delete specific conversations, or your entire Gemini chat history. You can also stop any chats being saved in the future, or have them auto-delete after a set time. There's also the option to delete individual chats from inside the Gemini interface. On the web, click the three dots next to the conversation in the left-hand panel, then choose Delete. On mobile, long-press on any previous conversation, and tap Delete. Erasing a chat is like erasing Gemini's memory, and you won't be able to refer back to it again. You shouldn't be entering anything too personal or sensitive into a Gemini conversation, however: Chats are sometimes reviewed by humans for quality control purposes. "Please don't enter confidential information in your conversations or any data you wouldn't want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our products, services, and machine-learning technologies," explains the Gemini privacy policy.

But for this to work, you must go to Gemini's Saved Info tab and add the necessary information. For example, I recently asked OpenAI's chatbot a question about Jeff Buckley's vocal range, to which it later asked me if I was a fan of his music. When I said yes, a notification appeared stating "memory updated." More broadly, building chatbots with long, reliable memories is part of the "agentic" AI future many companies, including Google and OpenAI, are building towards. At I/O 2024, for instance, Google debuted Project Astra, which featured a built-in memory, though it was limited to a relatively short window of time and could "mis-remember" things. Talking about accessibility, hopefully, Google plans to roll out this memory feature to free users, as I truly believe a memory function is one of the most important features for any AI chatbot. Until then, I'll still recommend ChatGPT to my friends and family, after all, OpenAI's model has the memory ofan elephant, and without paying for it.

ChatGPT has its own memory feature, and now, Gemini is getting the capability to remember context across different chats. Starting today, Gemini Advanced subscribers will be able to have their chatbot remember context across different conversations. This new feature allows Gemini to draw upon information from prior interactions when formulating responses. If a user asks a question related to a previous discussion, Gemini can now access and utilize that context, leading to more accurate and helpful answers. This uses whatever you've told the chatbot in previous instances, and as usual, you have full control over what data it keeps and how long it keeps it. Users can review and delete their chat history, or define how long the information is retained. The "Gemini Apps Activity" setting within "My Activity" provides granular control, including the option to disable the feature entirely. Gemini will also visually indicate in its response summary when it is using past chats to inform answers. While this is pretty cool, we also have to ask how efficient this approach is. ChatGPT's Memory feature is a table made of specific things to keep in mind, of which it takes into account every time you start a new chat. Meanwhile, Gemini looks like it's keeping track of the entire past chats and looking through them every time it needs to go back for something. It's working harder, and I'm not sure if it will be as effective as ChatGPT's equivalent is. Starting today, Gemini can now recall your past chats to provide more helpful responses. Whether you're asking a question about something you've already discussed, or asking Gemini to summarize a previous conversation, Gemini now uses information from relevant chats to craft a response. That means no more starting over from scratch or having to search for a previous conversation thread. Plus, you can build on top of previous conversations or projects you've already started. You're in control over what information is stored. You can easily review, delete or decide how long to keep your chat history. You can also turn off Gemini Apps Activity altogether by going to My Activity. Gemini may indicate when it uses your past chats in sources and related content. Google today is rolling out a new Gemini app feature for Advanced subscribers that can recall and "reference past chats for more tailored help." New Gemini conversations no longer have to start from scratch, or require you to find (scroll through) previous chats in the Recent side panel or equivalent list on mobile, which can get cluttered with simple assistant commands. When starting a new chat, you can have Gemini summarize previous ones, ask a follow-up question about "something you've already discussed," and "build on top of previous conversations or projects you've already started." Gemini now uses information from relevant chats to craft a response Responses "may indicate when [Gemini] uses your past chats in sources and related content." This builds on the Saved info feature that Google introduced in November to set response preferences, like not wanting meat recipes because you're a vegetarian or needing code in JavaScript. This new recall capability is rolling out now in English for Gemini Advanced members that subscribed via Google One AI Premium. It's available on the web and mobile app. Support for more languages and Google Workspace Business/Enterprise will be available in the coming weeks.

A major Gemini feature is now free for all users - no Advanced subscription required

A day after announcing upgraded conversation capabilities for Gemini, Google is rolling out more updates to its AI. All users are gaining access to a useful feature that was formerly available only to paid subscribers, and paid users are receiving a feature that helps continue previous conversations. First up is a paid feature that's now making its way to all users. Last fall, Google introduced the ability to analyze files to Gemini, a feature that was exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers who paid $20 a month. That capability is now rolling out to free users on both the Gemini app and the web-based version of Gemini. You can upload a file from your Google Drive or directly from your device -- up to 10 files at a time or one code folder with a maximum of 1,000 files. After uploading your files, you can ask questions about the content, get a summary of the content, or create a chart from a spreadsheet. Gemini analysis supports a number of file types, including TXT plain text, code files including C, CPP, PY, JAVA, PHP, SQL, and HTML, document files like DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF, DOT, DOTX, HWP, HWPX, documents created in Google Docs, tabular data files CSV, TSV, spreadsheet files XLS, XLSX, and spreadsheets created in Google Sheets. File analysis only works with Gemini 2.0 Flash. Starting today, Google says, Gemini Advanced can recall your past chats to provide more helpful responses.
