Google Unveils 'Search Live' in AI Mode

Google has begun testing a groundbreaking feature called 'Search Live' within its AI Mode, as announced at the recent Google I/O 2025 event. This innovative addition to the search experience allows users to engage in real-time conversations with Google, powered by the advanced AI engine Project Astra, which also drives Gemini Live 12.

How Search Live Works

Users who have been granted access to this feature will notice a new waveform icon, adorned with a Gemini sparkle, beneath the search bar in the Google app. This icon replaces the previous Google Lens shortcut on the left side. Tapping this icon launches a full-screen interface for Search Live, presenting a clean design with both light and dark themes available 1.

The interface includes two primary buttons at the bottom: one for muting and another for accessing the conversation transcript. Users can initiate verbal queries, to which the AI responds in real-time. Alternatively, users can access Search Live through a new circular icon in AI Mode, located to the right of the text field 2.

Key Features of Search Live

  1. Voice Options: Users can choose from four distinct voice assistants - Cosmo, Neso, Terra, and Cassini - accessible through the settings menu 13.

  2. Source Citations: After responding to a query, Search Live displays a scrollable carousel of websites used to inform the answer, enhancing transparency and allowing users to delve deeper into the information 12.

  3. Conversational Refinement: The AI can ask clarifying questions to refine user queries, and users are free to ask follow-up questions, creating a more dynamic and interactive search experience 12.

  4. Background Operation: Users can exit the Google app and continue their conversation in the background, offering flexibility in use 1.

Current Limitations and Future Prospects

While Search Live is an exciting development, it's important to note that the camera capability, which would allow video streaming for visual queries, is not yet available. This feature is expected to be implemented in future updates, similar to how Gemini Live initially rolled out voice functionality before adding camera sharing 1.

Rollout and Availability

Search Live is currently being tested with select users who are enrolled in Search Labs, Google's program for experimental features. The rollout is limited to the United States for now, with the feature available on both Android and iOS platforms 23.

Implications for the Future of Search

This development represents a significant step forward in making search more interactive and conversational. By integrating advanced AI capabilities directly into the search interface, Google is paving the way for more intuitive and efficient information retrieval. As the feature evolves and potentially expands globally, it could revolutionize how users interact with search engines and access information online 3.
