Google TV App Introduces AI-Powered Summaries and Reviews for Enhanced User Experience

The Google TV app is testing AI summaries and reviews for your favorite shows

Summary Google is incorporating AI into its Google TV app for Android to offer reviews and summaries of TV shows and movies. The app will feature an Instagram Stories-style slideshow for movies and TV shows with generative AI summaries and user reviews. There's no word on when these AI capabilities will officially make it to the Google TV app, but the wait may not be too long. Google has worked tirelessly over the past year or so to bundle AI in some form across its services. Today, AI elements can be found across many Google products, from its search engine experience to the more advanced capabilities offered by Gemini through Workspace apps. Unsurprisingly, the Google TV platform hasn't been exempt from this phenomenon either, with the company already working on bringing AI-powered News Briefs to the large screen. It now looks like some AI capabilities are also coming to the Google TV app for Android in a forthcoming update, offering reviews and summaries of TV shows and movies. Posts The folks over at Android Authority looked through the Google TV app (4.39.2886.720900620.9-release) to unlock a new Summaries, reviews & more button situated within a TV show or movie's page within the app. More specifically, this new button replaces the existing Watch on TV button that most users will see when navigating to a similar page. Close Current vs upcoming Tapping the Summaries, reviews & more button opens up an Instagram Stories-style slideshow, each containing additional details about the title. A total of six are available, with only a few of them using generative AI. The first slide gives you a brief explanation of the plot without ruining any of the suspense. A good use of Google's AI capabilities Close The second slide in this carousel offers a generative AI summary of the TV show or movie, and the third slide leverages AI to summarize user reviews published on Google. These slides also come with the "Generative AI is experimental" disclaimer, while one also tells you where the information was sourced from (Wikipedia). Moving on to the fourth slide, you will see actual user reviews and an audience rating, while the fifth highlights blog posts and articles about the show/film. The sixth slide is for language and other viewer advisories, which appear to be sourced from Wikipedia, while the generative AI disclaimer is also present in this slide. There's no info on when we'll see this upcoming AI-based refresh of the Google TV app, but since a lot of work has gone into it already, we won't be surprised if Google flips the switch over the next couple of weeks.

The feature provides a synopsis of the plot and a general overview of viewer opinions. Last year, Google rolled out AI summaries to YouTube. Just as the name suggests, it's a feature that provides a synopsis of the video you have pulled up. Now the AI summary feature is coming to the Google TV app on Android to help you choose the next show you want to watch. Google is starting to roll out AI summaries and reviews to the Android Google TV app. We have spotted the feature on one of our test devices configured for the US. Our device has Google TV running on version 4.39.2886.720900620.9-release. You can see how it works in the screenshots below. You'll see a "Summaries, reviews & more" button below a show's thumbnail. Tapping on that button opens a page that tells you what the show is about. That page has subsequent slides like Cinematic universe, a summary of the reviews, actual reviews, reviews and analysis from critics, and an advisory. At the bottom of the page, there are two buttons that will allow you to add the show to your watchlist and share it with others. While this feature is live on one of our devices, we're not seeing it yet on our other devices. It appears Google is taking it slow with this rollout, so it may not be live on your app yet.
