Google launches new flagship models including Pixel 9 Pro Fold
Alphabet's Google unveiled a lineup of new Pixel smartphones on Tuesday, with deeper integrations of its artificial intelligence technology as it races to incorporate AI into its hardware. The event at Alphabet's Bay View campus in Mountain View, California, bucks a tradition Google has maintained with every iteration of Pixel - its flagship smartphone launched in October 2016 - to announce the new version in autumn. The earlier timing is Google's latest bid to keep up with rivals in injecting AI features into its consumer-facing products and comes ahead of Apple's The planned launch of a new iPhone is in September. In June, Apple announced that devices including its latest version of iPhones would get upgrades that include "Apple Intelligence," a slew of generative AI-powered features within native applications, and integration with ChatGPT, the chatbot developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI. "We've seen a lot of AI announcements in a short burst of time as of late. I don't think you want to sit on it too long if you're Google," said IDC analyst Linn Huang. New AI integrations announced on Tuesday include a Pixel-only feature that lets users search for information stored in screenshots. Android users can now pull up Gemini, Google's chatbot, as an overlay on top of another app to answer questions or generate content. "There have been so many promises, so many coming soon, and not enough real-world helpfulness when it comes to AI, which is why today we're getting real," said Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president of devices and services. "We're fully in the Gemini era." Employees showcased several live demos of new Gemini functions, such as a voice conversation feature, though an attempt to use Gemini to cross-reference a picture of a concert poster with the calendar app took three tries and two devices to run successfully. Pixel 9, the base 6.3-inch display model, will retail at a starting price of $799, which is $100 more than the previous model. This and the 6.8-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL will begin shipping later in August, a company spokesperson said. The Pixel 9 Pro, which comes with added features like a better camera, and the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold will ship in September. The new gadgets are available to preorder on Tuesday. Google holds less than 1% market share in global smartphone shipments as of the second quarter of 2024, according to IDC. It trails far behind Samsung's market share of 18.9% and Apple's market share of 15.8%, according to IDC. That is in part because Google has entered fewer markets and is focused on higher-end price segments. In the United States, Google's 4.5% share makes it the fourth-biggest smartphone maker, according to IDC. But the Pixel line has also enabled Google to show off advances and spur the developer ecosystem around its Android operating system, which is used by device manufacturers like Samsung. Android represents one of several frontlines where Google is battling competitors to embed AI in ways that consumers will use. In May, it debuted a swath of upgrades to core products like its search engine. The company's engineers redesigned the Pixel's exterior and included camera upgrades as well as Google's new Tensor G4 chip. Google announced new versions of its smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Buds Pro 2 wireless earbuds on Tuesday as well. Google also added a "Loss of Pulse" feature to the new Pixel Watch. The feature uses algorithms to determine whether a user's heart has stopped and can contact emergency services. The feature will be available in the United Kingdom and the European Union. Also on Tuesday, Google and Peloton, the fitness company known for its stationary bike, announced a content partnership in which subscribers to Google's Fitbit Premium service would gain access to a library of Peloton's training classes.

Google launches enhanced Pixel phones in bid to leverage AI tech

"We're fully in the Gemini era," he told engineers, executives, analysts and media attending the bigger-than-usual event at Alphabet's Bay View campus in Mountain View, California. The event bucked another tradition: the latest versions of its Pixel smartphones were announced in the summer rather than in autumn as Google had done with every iteration of the device since its launch in 2016. Google launches Pixel 9 phones, Pixel Watch 3 in renewed push to sell AI
By Mark Gurman and Vlad Savov, Bloomberg News The Tribune Content Agency Alphabet Inc.'s Google is rolling out upgraded smartphones, watches and earbuds, aiming to take on Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. and offer more ways to use artificial intelligence. Google is touting the products - unveiled weeks ahead of Apple's newest gadgets - as the best way to experience its latest AI technology. The hardware also has outward changes, with Google moving away from the curved design it has used for several years on its Pixel phones. Dominant in internet search but long an underdog in tech devices, Google has been working to more tightly integrate its hardware and software. After putting devices chief Rick Osterloh in charge of Google's Android platform earlier this year, the company is betting that this more unified approach can turn its hardware business into an engine for AI growth. The new devices include the Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL phones, as well as an upscale folding model called the 9 Pro Fold. Google also unveiled a Pixel Watch 3 in two sizes and the Pixel Buds Pro 2. The phones will feature an upgraded version of Google Assistant with the company's Gemini generative AI, making it capable of more sophisticated responses, such as providing a cooking recipe after seeing a photo of ingredients. The company is offering a choice of sizes with its high-end Pro model, including a 6.3-inch version, a 6.8-inch edition and a foldable option with an 8-inch inner display. The standard Pixel 9 starts at $799 and will go on sale Aug. 22. The $999 and $1,099 Pro versions include better cameras and higher-end materials. The company said that its Pixel 9 phones are twice as durable as the models they are replacing. The foldable edition also sports a new design, adopting a more square shape when open. It starts at $1,799 and reaches stores on Sept. 4. The new Pixel Watch line includes an XL option, measuring 45 millimeters across, and improved displays that provide a larger active area and can be twice as bright as prior models. Google promises 24 hours of battery life with the always-on display, and the watch will let users interact with delivery people via the company's Nest Doorbell. The device can be used to control a connected Google TV set as well. The watch starts at $349 and ranges up to $499 for the larger size with built-in cellular connectivity. It goes on sale Sept. 10. Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 and has been integrating the fitness company's technology into its products. As part of the announcements Tuesday, Google is offering a selection of Peloton Interactive Inc. classes to users who subscribe to the premium version of Fitbit's service. The Pixel Buds are now 27% smaller and 24% lighter, Google said. The $229 earbuds include a new A1 chip for audio processing and will get as much as eight hours of battery life on one charge in noise-canceling mode. The announcements come at an unusual time, as Google has typically updated its flagship Pixel devices in October. This year's move jumps the company ahead of Apple's September debut of its iPhone 16 line. Apple is also planning an update to its watches and AirPods. Samsung, meanwhile, recently rolled out the Galaxy Watch Ultra alongside new, pricier Galaxy Fold and Flip models. Google has shown recent signs of progress after years of struggling to compete with Apple, Samsung and Chinese brands. Pixel holds 4.6% of the US market, according to research firm IDC, up from 3.6% in 2022. But Apple controls more than 50% of the market in the US. In May, Google rolled out a lower-end Pixel 8a phone and cut the price of its tablet, aiming to make further inroads. -A 50-megapixel wide-angle camera and 48-megapixel ultrawide camera sensor (an increase from 12 megapixels on the Pixel 8) on the back. -20% longer battery life, including a new 100-hour ultra-low-power mode. Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL -A 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, 48-megapixel 5X telephoto camera and 48-megapixel ultrawide camera sensors. -A 42-megapixel front camera, up from 12 on the Pixel 8 Pro, with a wider field of view and better light sensitivity. -The displays have 15% thinner borders than the prior Pro model. -Both screens are larger, with the exterior display moving to 6.3 inches from 5.8 inches and the unfolded screen going to 8 inches from 7.6 inches. The interior screen is also 80% brighter. -Google says the device is lighter than its predecessor and has the largest unfolded screen of any foldable phone. -Similar cameras to the prior model, including a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, 10.5-megapixel ultrawide sensor and a 10.8-megapixel telephoto camera. The new Pixel phones each have a new Tensor G4 chip, designed in-house, that Google says is about 20% faster at launching apps and loading webpages. The phones add new software features, including a weather app with AI-based summaries, enhancements for making calls sound clearer, and an app for sorting through screenshots and parsing out key information. Google also outlined new camera features: -Its new Add Me feature allows a photographer to insert themselves into a shot by taking another photo in the same location and blending the two using augmented reality and AI. -The Magic Editor adds an Autoframe tool that uses AI to recompose an image and people's positions in it. -The Reimagine feature can change the background of an image based on a text prompt. -A new Video Boost option uses AI to upgrade video into what Google calls 8K-like quality. Google is also adding a few enhancements that Apple has rolled out in recent years, including a satellite-based communication service for off-the-grid emergencies, an AI-based image-creation app, and a tool for recording phone calls and providing a summary of the conversation. And Google is offering access to its Gemini Nano AI models for free to buyers of its new phones.

Google launches Pixel 9 Smartphones, Pixel Watch 3 amid renewed AI push
Google on Tuesday unveiled new Pixel 9 smartphones packed with artificial intelligence features meant to compete with Apple's iPhone. The Pixel easily weaves users more tightly into Google's online services, taking a page from Apple's strategy with the iPhone and App Store. And it poses a direct challenge to the iPhone's "Apple Intelligence" AI as well as the company's alliance with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. But it raises questions about how well Google is safeguarding personal data and how regulators will react to the tech giant's push to make users even more dependent on its platform. A US judge last week handed Google a major legal blow, ruling in a landmark anti-trust case that it has maintained a monopoly with its dominant search engine. The court decision against a "big tech" giant could alter how the sector operates in the future. District Court Judge Amit Mehta found that Google had a monopoly for search and for text ads through exclusive distribution agreements that made it the "default" option that people were likely to use on devices. Android showcase Pixels account for a tiny sliver of the global smartphone market led by Samsung and Apple. One of the phone's purposes, however, is to showcase capabilities of the Android operating system that powers most of the smartphones in the world. Pixel 9 models optimize Google's Gemini AI capabilities and can help with daily tasks like booking appointments or finding old files in the mountain of data people tend to save, according to Pixel senior director of product management Shenaz Zack. "With your permission, Gemini can offer unparalleled personalized help accessing information across your inbox, Gmail, your calendar and a lot more," Zack said during a briefing. A Pixel might be used to take a photo of a concert poster, for example, then check whether that calendar date is open and draft a message inviting friends to join. And conversations with Google's AI on Pixel will be more free flowing, allowing interruptions or sudden topic shifts. New Pixels will also be able to take notes during phone calls, automatically notifying the other party first. Google said it made a priority of privacy, from protecting data used by its AI to letting users create password-protected private spaces for apps and other content. The Pixel 9's starting price is $899, with a new foldable model priced at $1,899. Google has been racing against Microsoft, OpenAI and others to lead in AI since the 2022 release of ChatGPT ignited intense interest in the technology. Meta has infused its AI into smart glasses, letting wearers ask questions about what they are looking at. AI gadgets galore Along with new Pixel smartphones, Google unveiled new Pixel ear bud and smart watch models boasting AI features and synched to work smoothly together. Pixel watches will be able to access live feeds from Nest camera-equipped doorbells, letting wearers see who is at their homes and speak with them. Google last week introduced an AI television streaming device designed to be the hub of a hyper-smart home. A sleek Google TV Streamer enhanced with Gemini AI is set for release September 24 and will mark the end of a Chromecast line dating back more than a decade. "We're using AI to evolve the future of Google Home and Nest experiences," senior director of product management Anish Kattukaran told AFP during a briefing. Nest is Google's line of "smart" home gadgets including speakers, cameras, locks, thermostats and routers.

Google Launches New Pixel 9 Phones As AI Race Heats Up
Google on Tuesday unveiled new Pixel 9 smartphones, its latest salvo in the scramble by Big Tech to corner the market on nascent artificial intelligence. The Silicon Valley search giant has been racing against Microsoft, OpenAI and others to lead in AI since the 2022 release of ChatGPT ignited intense interest in the technology. Pixels account for a tiny sliver of the global smartphone market dominated by Samsung and Apple, but Google argued its new line is a chance to answer what -- after all the hype -- AI can actually do for customers. "I understand people's skepticism," Google senior vice president of devices Rick Osterloh said at company's campus in Mountain View, California. "There have been so many promises, so many 'coming soons,' and not enough real world helpfulness when it comes to AI - which is why today we're getting real." But AI-infused Pixels also raise questions about how well Google is safeguarding personal data, and how regulators will react to the tech giant's push to make users even more dependent on its platform. A US judge last week handed Google a major legal blow, ruling in a landmark anti-trust case that it has maintained a monopoly with its dominant search engine. The court decision against the tech giant could alter how the sector operates in the future. The Pixel weaves users more tightly into Google's online services, taking a page from Apple's strategy with the iPhone and App Store. Pixel 9 models use Google's Gemini AI capabilities, offering consumers an alternative to the iPhone's "Apple Intelligence" AI, as well as the company's alliance with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. The phones can help with daily tasks like booking appointments or finding old files in the mountain of data people tend to save, according to Pixel senior director of product management Shenaz Zack. A Pixel might be used to take a photo of a concert poster, for example, then check whether that calendar date is open and draft a message inviting friends to join. And conversations with Google's AI on Pixel will be more free flowing, allowing interruptions or sudden topic shifts, the company said. New Pixels will also be able to take notes during phone calls, automatically notifying the other party first. Google said it has prioritized privacy, from protecting data used by its AI to letting users create password-protected private spaces for apps and other content. Pixel 9 models let Gemini AI handle personal requests, sending no sensitive information off the device, according to Google. Analysts said the Pixels could help consumers better envision the potential of artificial intelligence. "I'm actually really impressed with what Google has done here," Techsponential analyst Avi Greengart said in a demonstration area at the Pixel event. "Google is making AI practical and understandable to the average consumer ... It's so easy, once you use it, to see the benefit of AI rather than this sort of amorphous conceptual thing that is that is being thrust upon us." Google also unveiled new Pixel earbud and smartwatch models boasting AI features. The company said the watches will be able to access live feeds from Google's Nest camera-equipped doorbells, letting wearers see who is at their homes and speak with them. The analyst Greengart said such products will be necessary as Google tries to keep pace with companies such as Apple. "Google needs to keep the Android ecosystem vibrant," he said.

The Pixel 9 series is shaping up to be an action-packed lineup, which now includes a Pixel 9 series foldable as well. Google's flagship models have become a lot more premium, not only in terms of the quality but overall package, except for the performance from the Tensor chipsets. Pixel 9 series is going to be unveiled at the Made by Google event in California on Tuesday, August 13. The live event will start from around 10:30 PM IST if you are watching in India. You can head over to Google Youtube page or social channels to get the updates. The Google Pixel 9 series India launch is on August 14. Google's Pixel 9 launch teaser is already up on Flipkart, its online sales platform. The company's micro page also says, get ready for a whole new era of phones, which hints at multiple Pixel 9 models launching in the country. Having said that, the page also shows us the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold while the regular Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro are not mentioned there. Google Pixel 9 series made its unofficial public bow with a full-fledged leak earlier this week. Google has quashed away those reports by going official with its own teaser on Friday, which shows us the new Gemini-powered Pixel 9 lineup and yes, the first Pixel 9 series Fold in the market. The leaks do confirm the new camera module at the back of the Pixel 9 Pro model, while the 9 Pro Fold carries a gigantic camera setup that is likely to feature three camera sensors. AI is going to be a big part of the event from Google and we are eager to see how it shapes up against the likes of Galaxy AI that is available on its latest foldables. The cameras are expected to get major upgrades this year, and the new bar design for the module could allow the company to offer more versatile sensors. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold teasers from Google also show us an interesting camera setup and the details will be confirmed later next week. Among other features that Google is expected to bring with the Pixel 9 series is the satellite SOS tech.

Made By Google 2024 Probably Won't Be an AI Revolution
Google will feature new hardware and AI features, but probably nothing groundbreaking. Google takes a slightly different approach to its big product announcements than most. Unlike other companies, who mostly try to retain an air of secrecy before the keynote, Google simply embraces all the leaks and rumors, showing off the devices themselves before Made by Google. That's how we know for sure that this year, Google is showing off the Pixel 9 Pro and and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. These two phones are highlighted on the company's own Made by Google website, but almost act as stand-ins for Google's larger highlight: AI. Here's what to expect, and how to watch: Google has built up the Pixel as a major contender in the smartphone marketplace. Now, it's unveiling the "9" series, and rumor has it we're seeing four new phones. Kicking things off is a standard Pixel 9, which Google hasn't actually commented on yet. The rumors suggest this could ship with a 6.3-inch display, 12GB of RAM, a 50MP standard camera, and a 48MP ultrawide. What we have seen is its more expensive companion, the Pixel 9 Pro. Google hasn't provided any specs yet, but, again, rumors suggest it could ship with a higher-resolution display, 16GB of RAM, and three rear cameras -- the extra being a 48MP telephoto lens). This year, we could also get an XL variant of the Pixel 9 Pro, which would bump the display up to 6.8 inches. (The rest of the specs are likely the same as the Pixel 9 Pro.) Last but not least, is the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Despite having "9" in its name, the Fold is actually only Google's second attempt at a foldable phone. Rumors suggest it could have a 6.3-inch display on the outside, and an 8-inch display on the inside, coupled with 16GB of RAM, and three rear cameras: a 48MP wide, 10.8MP ultrawide, and a 10.8MP telephoto. If you're looking for the best cameras, you'll want a standard Pixel Pro. All new Pixels are getting Google's latest in-house chip, the Tensor G4. That means, regardless of which Pixel you want to pick up, you should expect similar, if not identical, performance across devices. That said, rumors suggest the G4 isn't going to provide a huge bump in performance over the G3, so your Pixel 8 probably won't be that much slower than the Pixel 9. Where the real advantage may come, however, is with AI. Google's next big Android upgrade, Android 15, is on the horizon, and will likely take up some of tomorrow's focus. We already know quite a bit about Android 15, including new features like Private Space, which gives you a hidden spot on your phone to store sensitive apps and files. But it seems almost certain that any Android discussion, Android 15 or otherwise, will pertain to AI. Google is rumored to be dubbing its future AI endeavors as "Google AI," which draws immediate parallels to Apple's "Apple Intelligence." And like Apple Intelligence, some of Google's new features are probably going to be exclusives: We're expecting some Pixel 9-specific AI features with this announcement, which means they'll require the Tensor G4 chip to run. These features include Add Me, a feature that might use AI to add extra people to a photo; Studio, which appears to be an AI image generator; and Pixel Screenshots, which may scan the screenshots in your library, turning them into an easy-to-search database. I'm all for useful AI features, especially ones that beef up privacy and security. However, I'm not seeing anything in the rumors to suggest that Made by Google 2024 is going to be an AI revolution for Google. The company is still coming back from its disastrous AI Overviews rollout, and had to pull a Gemini ad during the Olympics, so I'm not convinced we're going to see the future of AI roll out tomorrow. Instead, we may see some useful upgrades for Pixel users, especially those who invest in Google's upcoming line of devices. That said, we'll have to see what Google actually decides to announce.

The Made by Google Pixel 9 launch event kicks off tomorrow. Here's what we expect
It's almost time once again for the tech world to stop everything else it's doing and pay attention as a major company shows off its latest hardware. Next up is Google's turn at bat. Thanks to a string of leaks and Google's own teases, we already have a pretty clear idea of what the company has planned for its Made by Google hardware event. The show will take place Tuesday, August 13 at 1PM ET. We'll get the official reveal of the Pixel 9 lineup, for one thing. This includes what the company is calling the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is certainly more of a mouthful than "Pixel Fold 2." In addition, Google will certainly reveal more details about Android 15 and the operating system's public rollout. Expect to hear the word "Gemini" a lot too as Google is likely to focus on the AI-powered features of the new handsets. Some accessories could be in store in the form of Pixel Buds Pro 2 and a new Pixel Watch (or two) as well. Here's how to watch Google launch Pixel 9 phones and the other assorted devices at the Made by Google event. Engadget will be live blogging it as well (look for the link here early on Tuesday morning). In the meantime, this is what we know for certain Google will show off at the event and everything else we expect to learn about at Made by Google: As usual, the main event of Made by Google will be the Pixel 9 lineup. Google has confirmed (as if it were ever really in doubt) that it will show off new smartphones at the event, but it's expected to have three traditional models this year instead of two. The Pixel 9 and 9 Pro will be straight-up successors to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. Leaks and rumors suggest Google will be adding a Pixel 9 Pro XL, with a larger screen than the other two models, to the lineup as well. YouTuber Andro-news claims to have gotten their hands on an engineering sample of the larger handset, which has flat edges, polished metal on the sides and matte-textured glass on the rear. However, the phone isn't switched on in the video. The Pixel 9 Pro is slated to have more advanced specs than the Pixel 9 but with the same display size. The Pixel 9 Pro XL, meanwhile, is expected to have almost the same specs as the 9 Pro but in a bigger handset. Per Tom's Guide, the 9 and 9 Pro displays will measure around 6.3 inches while the Pixel 9 Pro XL may have a whopping 6.9-inch screen. All three of the phones are expected to have a redesigned camera module. This large camera bar (which Google has confirmed at least for the Pixel 9 Pro) looks like it protrudes quite a bit from the main body. Unless you pick up an appropriate case, you can probably expect this to snag on your pocket more often than you'd like. The Pixel 9 is believed to have 50MP wide and 48MP ultrawide lenses in its camera array. Google is likely to employ a new chipset this year, which will probably be called the Tensor G4. Leaks have also suggested that the base Pixel 9 will come with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The two larger phones are expected to max out at 512GB of storage. One other expected addition this year is the introduction of emergency satellite messaging, a feature that Apple has supported on the last two generations of iPhones. Google will be hoping that consumers find the design of its latest foldable phone more elegant than its name. "Pixel 9 Pro Fold" doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as "Pixel Fold 2." However, the change does make sense if Google is looking to more clearly position the foldable as a premium product with the inclusion of "Pro" in the name. If the foldable has the same chipset as the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, the name change is even more logical. It's not rare for phone manufacturers to go with a major redesign on their second (or even third) stab at a new form factor as they learn more about what works and what doesn't. Like its more rigid siblings, the 9 Pro Fold also has a noticeable camera bump albeit one that positions the lenses vertically. Leaked images from a regulator in Taiwan indicate that the selfie camera has been moved on the interior screen to support a wider field of view. It appears that Google has reduced the fold crease this time around too. As ever, Google has been gradually announcing Android 15 features over the last several months, in large part to help developers update their apps ahead of the operating system's public rollout. Along with security measures such as Theft Detection Lock and Google Play fraud prevention, it should come as little surprise that Google is weaving AI more tightly into the fabric of its mobile OS. The Made by Google teasers have made it very clear that the company is focusing heavily on the AI features of its new devices, such as the ability to draft a letter or email based on a prompt. Google confirmed back at I/O that Gemini will be more deeply integrated into Android 15 (which perhaps could spell the demise of Google Assistant) and will have better contextual awareness of what you're doing. For instance, you'll be able to ask the chatbot questions about a YouTube video you're watching and it should be able to answer them. You might think of it as a modern, interactive version of Pop-Up Video. We should get a release date for Android 15 -- at least for supported Pixel devices -- at the event. It'll be around the same time Google starts shipping the new Pixel lineup, most likely later in August. It's just as well Google doesn't build ships considering how many leaks it has to deal with. A couple of weeks ahead of Made by Google, Android Headlines got its hands on the specs of the Pixel Watch 3, which is expected to be available in two sizes: 41mm and 45mm. The Pixel Watch 3 will likely have an Actua display capable of delivering up to 2,000 nits of brightness -- that's twice as bright as the previous model's AMOLED display. Per the leak, Google claims that a battery saver mode extends the time between charges to up to 36 hours, though you'll get up to 24 hours of standard use out of the wearable when the always-on display is enabled. The smaller model is expected to offer 20 percent faster charging compared with the previous model as well. It had been anticipated that Google would name the larger model the Pixel Watch 3 XL. However, that's no longer expected to be the case, according to Android Headlines. Each variant will have its size listed in parentheses to differentiate them, the publication says. It's been two years since Google released the Pixel Buds Pro, so those are very much due for an upgrade. Rumors suggest the Pixel Buds Pro 2 will debut at Made By Google. Some unofficial renders have popped up, indicating that along with the existing Charcoal and Porcelain colorways, there will be Aloe and Hot Pink variants to match various Pixel phone options. It appears that Google is bringing back a version of the wingtip design from the original Pixel Buds too. It remains to be seen what Google is cooking up for the audio side of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 but we do have at least some sense of the price. Rumors suggest the Pixel Buds Pro 2 will cost $229, which is $30 more than the base price of the current model. In all honesty, that's about everything we're expecting to see at Made by Google. It had been anticipated that the company would unveil the latest Nest Learning Thermostat and a new streaming box at the event, but Google actually revealed those a week ahead of the main showcase. The fourth-gen Nest Learning Thermostat has a 60 percent larger LCD display than the previous model with the ability to have customizable faces. It'll be available on August 20 in three colors: silver, black and gold. It costs $280 and comes with one wireless temperature sensor. As for the Google TV Streamer, that will run you $100 and it'll be available next month. While that's twice as expensive as the Chromecast with Google TV dongle, the company has upgraded the specs with a faster GPU, 4GB RAM instead of 2GB and four times the storage at 32GB. There's support for HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and spatial audio (via Google Pixel Buds) too. What's more, the Google TV Streamer is designed to be a smart home hub. There's Matter support and a Google Home panel through which you can control smart bulbs and view live video from connected doorbells and security cameras. Those are at least reasonably compelling devices, so it seems a little odd that Google wouldn't want to give them more of a spotlight by instead unveiling them at its splashy August 13 event. It stands to reason then that Google wants the event to be primarily about smartphones, smartwatches and earbuds. That does make sense as those are the most likely going to be the most successful hardware categories for the company over the all-important holiday period. Still, there's always space for at least one surprise (bring back Stadia, you cowards).

Google aims to produce 10 million units this year. It is reported that Google has partners like Dixon in India to carry out the assembly of the phones. However, only the Pixel 8 phones are being currently made, and not the Pixel 8 Pro or the Pixel 8a. As Google is gaining confidence in the Indian market, the U.S.-based search giant will launch its foldable phone, Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, for the first time in India. Tonight, Google will unveil the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It is likely to announce the next generation of buds, Pixel Buds Pro 2 and probably the Pixel smartwatch 3. What To Expect From Google's Launch Event Tuesday
Mizuho analysts said the event could be the "next catalyst" for shares of Google parent Alphabet. Alphabet's Google (GOOGL) will hold its annual Made By Google launch event Tuesday, where it will unveil the next generation of Pixel smartphones, as well as provide updates on how it's integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its devices with Gemini. Mizuho analysts said the event could be the "next catalyst" for shares of Google parent Alphabet. The company said it will unveil a "new era of phones" with the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The new devices are to be supercharged with AI capabilities from Google's AI model Gemini. The new devices could help Google better compete with Apple's (AAPL) upcoming iPhone 16 equipped with Apple Intelligence. At its launch event, Google will showcase bringing "the best of Google AI" and its mobile platform together with updates "across Android, Gemini, and the Pixel portfolio of devices." Google is expected to "showcase its LLM and AI agent running locally on Android, which could differentiate Alphabet from its peers and address the debate of increased competition in search," Mizuho analysts said. The analysts highlighted that the company is building an AI agent that could help it compete with Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI's upcoming voice features. The launch comes after OpenAI announced SearchGPT in July, which is expected to increase competition within the Google-dominated search market. Alphabet shares edged 0.8% lower to close at $162.29 Monday, ahead of the event Tuesday. The stock has gained over 16% since the start of the year.
