Grok gains a canvas-like tool for creating docs and apps | TechCrunch
Grok, the chatbot from Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has gained a canvas-like feature for editing and creating documents and basic apps. Called Grok Studio, the feature was announced on X late Tuesday. It's available for both free and paying Grok users on Grok.com "Grok can now generate documents, code, reports, and browser games," wrote the official Grok account on X. "Grok Studio will open your content in a separate window, allowing both you and Grok to collaborate on the content together." Grok is only the latest chatbot to get a dedicated workspace for tinkering with software and writing projects. OpenAI launched a similar capability, Canvas, for ChatGPT in October. Anthropic was one of the first to the punch with Artifacts for Claude. Grok Studio doesn't seem materially different from the canvas-like tools that've come before it. It lets you preview HTML snippets and run code like Python, C++, and JavaScript. All content opens in a window to the right-hand side of Grok's responses. Grok Studio is made potentially more useful by another Grok upgrade announced today: integration with Google Drive. Now, you can attach files from a Google Drive account to a Grok prompt. Grok can work with documents, spreadsheets, and slides, according to xAI.

xAI's Grok launches Studio interface for documents and code
xAI has launched a new interface for its Grok chatbot that could be compared to ChatGPT's Canvas. The Elon Musk-helmed AI company has introduced the first version of Studio, which can generate documents, code and even browser games on a separate window. If you ask Grok to write an essay for you, for instance, you'll find text formatting buttons (Bold, Italics and Underline) at the top of the interface. You'll also find a a drop-down menu with header options and buttons to create bullet and numbered lists. If you ask Grok to write code for you, you'll immediately see how it runs on a preview tab that you can switch to on the upper part of the interface. In addition to being able to preview HTML, the chatbot can also run and preview Python, C++, Javascript, Typescript and bash scripts. In addition, the company has added Google Drive support for Grok, which now works with documents, spreadsheets and slides. You can upload a spreadsheet and ask it to use information from the file to prepare a report for you, complete with charts and illustrations, open an essay you want to edit, or slides you'd like to jazz up. Grok Studio is available for all premium and free users. You don't have to type in a prompt or click anything to activate it, but you'll have to sign up for an account and sign in before you can access its features.

I used Grok's new AI tool Studio to make a website, research paper and browser game -- all for free
xAI has just announced a massive update to its Grok chatbot that helps it keep up pace with the OpenAI's powerhouse. This new update comes in the form of a brand new -- and totally free -- feature called Grok Studio. Grok Studio can generate documents, write code and reports, and even create browser games. When you ask Grok Studio a prompt related to these kinds of tasks, it will open up a new window, allowing you to edit and change your creative projects as you see fit, or ask for new changes. This isn't necessarily a unique feature. OpenAI released Canvas -- a specific interface for writing and coding projects -- late last year, while Anthropic has something similar with Claude too. Grok works similarly to these tools, allowing the user to preview snippets of code being generated and download unique file types to show off the content in its best format. However, where Grok stands out is its Google Drive integration. You can attach files from a Google Drive account to a Grok prompt, helping you to get the most of your documents, spreadsheets, and slides. Grok Studio is available on both free and paid versions of the AI model but you do need to have an account. Once you've signed up and opened Grok, it's simply a case of asking the model a request that will utilize this. Here are some examples of tasks that utilize Grok Studio: I spent some time playing with the new Grok feature and, for the most part, it did an okay job with a couple of hiccups. The very first task I asked for was "create a Mario-like side-scrolling browser game using the arrow keys as movement". This caused some issues and it ended up generating lines of gibberish code halfway through before eventually giving up. The next task, to make a website to display art on, worked better. This took about 10 seconds to generate and gave me a simple, but well-designed website with an artist description section, gallery, and contact options. With some back and forth with Grok, I was able to fill in the gallery spaces, add my contact details, and update each page. Grok also wrote a research paper for me on Peter Pan and designed infographics on the most popular social media platforms. Where this kind of tool stands out is the ability to make corrections. At first, I didn't like the first version of the infographics I was given so I asked for more detail, brighter colours and a more interesting aesthetic. Is this the cutting edge of AI technology? No. But what Grok has done is bring some of the smarter features of AI models to a free platform. The model is still buggy and, like other AI platforms out there, can fall at regular hurdles, like its failed attempt at making a browser game for me, for example. However, for now, the biggest thing holding the model back is its lack of creativity. Grok's generations are simple, focusing on the information you asked for, but without much pizzazz. This is where its biggest competitor, OpenAI's Canvas, thrives.

Elon Musk's xAI Launches Grok Studio to Challenge ChatGPT With Split-Screen Collaboration - Decrypt
xAI released Grok Studio today, offering users a canvas-style interface for building apps, writing documents, and developing browser games. The new feature pits Elon Musk's AI company directly against OpenAI's ChatGPT Canvas and Anthropic's Claude Artifacts in the competitive AI productivity space. Grok Studio allows split-screen, real-time collaboration between users and the AI, enabling simultaneous work on various creative projects. The interface supports multiple programming languages including Python, JavaScript, and C++, with the ability to preview HTML snippets. Beyond simply coding, Grok now features a "preview" tab to let users have a glimpse of what their HTML snippets, coding languages, and bash scripts generate. Everything happens inside of Grok's native interface. "Grok can now generate documents, code, reports, and browser games. Grok Studio will open your content in a separate window, allowing both you and Grok to collaborate on the content together," xAI said in a tweet announcing the new feature. We tested the new feature, and it appears well implemented, giving more prominence to the code than the prompt for better understanding of what is going on -- unlike Claude, for example, which splits the screen in half. Next to the code image there is a Preview button to let users see the final product generated after all their interactions. The release comes two months after xAI launched Grok 3, continuing the company's rapid expansion of AI capabilities since 2024. Grok Studio appears available to both free and paid users. Another new feature announced by xAI was a Google Drive integration, letting users add documents, spreadsheets, and slide decks directly into prompts. This feature was first featured by Google in Gemini, with OpenAI quickly following suit and Anthropic adopting it later on. The new feature is located in the prompt text box, similar to ChatGPT's UI. The model is capable of understanding visual inputs like photos and charts, and is obviously capable of understanding the text on documents with different formats like .txt, .doc, and .rft, along with native Google Docs. Grok Studio's support for browser game development aligns with Musk's previously stated intentions for xAI. In February, Musk noted plans to develop an AI game studio, with this new feature pointing that the company may be already pushing towards that direction by enabling collaborative development -- or collaborative vibe coding, maybe? The competitive AI productivity landscape continues to evolve rapidly, with each major player now offering features that make their models more compelling. Just this week, Anthropic announced web search and research capabilities, along with Gmail and calendar integration, while Google integrated its Veo2 video generator in Gemini, and OpenAI released o3 and o4-mini -- its most powerful reasoning models.

xAI Launches Grok Studio for Developers | AIM Media House
With Grok Studio, users can now generate and execute code, create documents and browser games, and even collaborate in real time through a dedicated content window. Elon Musk's xAI officially launched the first version of Grok Studio on Wednesday, introducing powerful features designed to streamline the creative and coding experience for all users. With Grok Studio, users can now generate and execute code, create documents and browser games, and even collaborate in real time through a dedicated content window. It will make AI-powered development more interactive and accessible. It supports live code execution in several popular languages, including Python, C++, JavaScript, TypeScript, and bash script. Users can write code, test it instantly in a "preview" tab, and iterate without switching tools. Although Julia code can still be generated, execution support is unavailable. For that, users are advised to use Jupyter Notebook or VS Code with the Julia extension. For better workflow integration, Grok Studio now lets users attach and work with files directly from Google Drive. Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Slides are also in the studio for better performance. The AI can read and interact with users' Google Drive content, making it a valuable assistant for collaborative tasks, document editing, and data analysis. Beyond programming, Grok Studio opens up creative possibilities. Whether users are building interactive reports, generating articles, or designing browser-based games, everything is rendered in a separate, clean workspace that enhances focus and collaboration. The feature is similar to OpenAI's Canvas, Google Canvas, and Claude Artifacts by Anthropic. xAI recently launched Grok 3, capable of reasoning, solving problems, understanding the world, and following instructions. It was trained on Colossus using 10 times more computing power than previous state-of-the-art models. Grok 3 has leading performance across academic benchmarks and real-world user preferences, achieving an Elo score of 1402 in the Chatbot Arena.

Grok Just Upgraded to Rival ChatGPT's Canvas
I Always Keep a Browser Extension VPN Handy -- It's More Useful Than You Think xAI has launched Grok Studio, a major update to its Grok chatbot platform. The new update lets you collaborate on code, create browser-based apps, and generate documents all in one place. Generate Code and Documents with Grok Studio Elon Musk's Grok is a late bloomer in the AI chatbot world. However, it's expected that his Grok AI tool will bring many great features to chatbot technology. xAI -- the company behind Grok itself -- threw a surprising late-night announcement of Grok Studio on April 15th, 2025. Although considered late to the game compared to other AI chatbots, the integration of Grok Studio allows users to do more than ever with Grok. This version allows you to execute code and find support from Google Drive, in a very similar way to ChatGPT's Canvas feature. Whether you're a paying user or a free one, you can access Grok via its website or through Grok's standalone app released earlier this year. Grok Studio's code execution opens your requested code generation in a new tab, allowing you to edit the code right inside the Grok interface. The preview shares snippets of HTML, and allows you to run Python, C++, Javascript, Typescript, and Bash scripts in the new tab. Showing you the results in a separate tab allows you to collaborate with Grok to find your perfect result. For instance, you can simply ask Grok to "Write the code for a simple HTML calculator." It'll generate the code in seconds. With the preview pane, you don't even need to save the code as a file to view it. You can see both the output and the code at the same time. This makes it easier to create, edit, or fix any aspects of the code to reflect the correct results. Below are some more examples of browser games X users made with Grok Studio: Related You Can Now Use Elon Musk's Sarcastic Chatbot Grok for Free You can ask up to 10 questions in a 2-hour period. Posts Google Drive Integration in Grok Studio Along with the announcement of Grok Studio came a second announcement that Grok studio will have integration for Google Drive support. This lets you attach your own Google Drive files to your prompt. Grok can work with documents, spreadsheets, and slides, letting you take full advantage of Grok Studio in your document creation or editing. There's no further announcement of other integrations, but you can already upload local files like CSV or other formats than Google files. Upload a document, and ask for code to be generated based upon your Google Drive document. This works great for CSV files, which hold lots of organized information. The productivity that Grok Studio will bring should benefit many people who are short on time or don't have the ability to craft a well-created document or presentation. Grok hasn't been around as long as other AI chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, but with Elon Musk's funding behind it, it should not only catch up, but also surpass other chatbots available.
