HII Awarded Key Microelectronics Project Under CHIPS Act

HII (NYSE: HII), a global defense provider, has announced that its Mission Technologies division will lead one of four new microelectronics projects stemming from the CHIPS and Science Act. This initiative aims to strengthen the United States' semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependency on foreign sources of microelectronics 12.

Project Details and Objectives

The project, awarded in collaboration with the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons (SCMC) Hub, focuses on developing the first broadband Digital Direct Waveform Synthesizer (DDWS) solution. This highly programmable technology offers several key features:

  1. High-speed communication links
  2. Direct data acquisition for flexible processing
  3. Secure storage capabilities
  4. Ability to create a root-of-trust processing environment

The DDWS project's ultimate goal is to produce a highly integrated, ruggedized, reliable, and low-size, weight, power, and cost module. This module will enable secure-edge computing, targeting artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for the Department of Defense 12.

Collaborative Effort and Team Composition

HII's Mission Technologies will lead a team consisting of:

  • Purdue University
  • Marvell Government Solutions
  • NHanced Semiconductors
  • Air Force Research Laboratory
  • Naval Surface Warfare Center - Crane Division

This collaborative effort aims to advance the performance of various critical systems, including:

  • Cognitive radar
  • Electromagnetic warfare
  • Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance
  • Electronic signal intelligence systems

Additionally, the DDWS will facilitate sensor integration into smaller platforms such as autonomous vehicles, small drones, and buoys 12.

Significance and Impact

Dino Cencetti, vice president of C5ISR systems operation at Mission Technologies, emphasized the project's importance: "We're now part of the U.S. reclaiming the microelectronics industry and eliminating our dependency on foreign technology. We are excited to get this work going and enable next generation, digital modernization and miniaturization made right here in the U.S.A." 12

The project aligns with the broader goals of the CHIPS and Science Act, which seeks to revitalize domestic semiconductor manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign sources. This initiative is crucial for maintaining technological leadership and ensuring national security in an increasingly digital world.

About the SCMC Hub and Microelectronics Commons

The Silicon Crossroads Microelectronic Commons (SCMC) Hub, led by the Applied Research Institute, is an innovation ecosystem designed to accelerate the expansion of America's microelectronics base. It leverages collaborative practices to support innovation, workforce development, and infrastructure needs 12.

The Microelectronics Commons initiative, of which this project is a part, represents a significant step in the U.S. government's efforts to bolster domestic semiconductor capabilities and reduce vulnerabilities in the supply chain.

As the project moves forward, it promises to contribute significantly to the advancement of U.S. microelectronics technology, with potential applications spanning both defense and civilian sectors.
