iOS 18 update is Apple's biggest in years as the company enters the AI era to rival Google's Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT and more. The iOS 18 release day is here and Apple has rolled out the new iOS version, probably its biggest in years. iOS 18 mostly focuses on the basics and gives you features that Android has offered for many years. Having said that, you finally get RCS message support on iPhones that Google has been pleading Apple to offer for a while. Apple is also extending support for its Satellite tech to other features and yes, Siri is getting a major overhaul thanks to the goodies courtesy Apple Intelligence. Apple's focus on supporting a wide of iPhones with the new iOS 18 update means this is an extended list: More importantly, if you want to use the Apple Intelligence features via iOS 18 update, you will need these iPhone models: iOS 18 update will pop-up on the screen from 10:30 PM IST for those in India. iOS 18 is out: Here's what's new | TechCrunch
Apple's newest software update, iOS 18, is rolling out today to all iPhone users. While AI technology was heavily hyped as a key part of this upgrade, Apple Intelligence features aren't part of this release. Instead, Apple says it will release Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.1 starting with the U.S. before gradually rolling them out to more global markets over the months ahead. With iOS 18.0, the focus is on personalization, including custom icons, a revamped Control Center, and support for locked and hidden apps. Users will be able to place icons anywhere on the grid or make them larger, which hides the text label, offering more control over the iOS Home Screen. The move will particularly appeal to younger, Gen Z consumers, including those who rapidly adopted custom icons with the launch of iOS 14 years ago. While users will be able to switch to a dark mode or customize their icons with a tinted color of their choosing, third-party app developers will also be able to release custom icons to take full advantage of the functionality. Some developers may be ready on day one but others are still working on icon updates. The iOS Control Center, which offers easy access to common functions with a swipe down on the Home Screen, has also gone through a big overhaul with this release. By default, there are now four pages of controls focused on favorites, music controls, home, and connectivity. The latter includes controls for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, your personal hotspot, and more. Everything is customizable in the new Control Center, too. You can add or remove pages or icons. Meanwhile, on the iPhone's Lock Screen, users will be able to swap out lock screen shortcuts for their preferred apps. For instance, you can replace the default camera button on the lock screen with a third-party camera app, such as Obscura or Halide. When it comes to privacy, iOS 18 brings a way to lock apps behind Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. You can hide these apps from the Home Screen, too. After that, they only appear in a new hidden app folder in the App Library. The Photos app has been redesigned with iOS 18, as well, though not all have welcomed the changes in the beta releases of the software. The company did away with tabs at the bottom of the screen and adopted a single page design with an aim to bring more attention to surfacing different photos from your library. In the Photos apps you will see albums, but also collection folders such as Recent Days, People & Pets, Pinned Collections, Memories, Trips (a new feature), Utilities and Media type. You can customize the visibility and order of these items. The idea is to turn the Photos app into more than just a utility, but the result is an app that's harder to navigate, some have complained. The design has been tweaked since its debut and could be updated again if user backlash increases. Another major change is Apple's newly added support for RCS (Rich Communication Service), a hypercharged version of SMS, which will allow Android users to send and receive high-quality media with those on iPhone. Both iPhone and Android users will get typing indicators and read receipts for conversations between the two platforms, as well. While messages from Android users will still show up as green bubbles, this feature might help restore parity between the two platforms. The Apple Phone app was updated in iOS 18 with features that make it easier to search through your phone call logs and use the number pad to find a contact. While this is seemingly a small update, finding when you last called someone via a quick search can be handy. iOS 18 also lets you switch between SIM cards while calling. Plus, there is now support for live voicemail transcription in a dozen more languages and regions. iOS 18 ships with a new Passwords app, too. These sensitive credentials were previously stored in a submenu in the Settings app. Now, they get their own app, which makes them more accessible to end users, but also puts Apple in more direct competition with password app developers like 1Password, LastPass, Dashlane, and others. However, unlike many of those third-party apps, it doesn't store sensitive items that aren't passwords -- like credit cards, IDs, or secure notes. But if you're not already using a password app, having a built-in option could help users who don't typically think about their password security. Other notable updates include: In June at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) and earlier this month and during the iPhone 16 launch event, Apple spent a good chunk of time discussing Apple Intelligence. It is ironic that the iPhone 16 -- the phone the company describes as "built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence" -- will ship without Apple Intelligence. (That explains why Apple was developing technology to update the iPhone's operating system while still in its retail box in stores.) The tech giant said it will ship AI features starting in October with support for U.S. English. Later this year, Apple will add support for localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. Next year, it will add support additional languages including Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish and Indian English. With developer betas, Apple tested AI-powered writing tools, the ability to summarize notifications, email summaries, and a new focus mode called "Reduce Interruptions." The company also tested a feature to clean up photos by removing unwanted people and objects. It's not clear when each of these features will make it to the public release. However, only customers with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, an iPhone 16 or 16 Plus, or an iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max, will be able to experience the AI technology. There may be some exclusive features for the iPhone 16, such as visual search, activated by the 16's new Camera Control button. As noted in our iOS 18 preview for the public beta release in July, iOS 18's initial release only tells one part of the story. The launch of Apple Intelligence feels like the finale. At this point, we can't say if the second part is engaging enough just yet as we can only judge Apple Intelligence from the trailer and beta trials.

iOS 18 is here: Apple Intelligence MIA in initial release
Apple first previewed iOS 18 back in June, giving users an early look at upcoming iPhone features. Since then, the company has tested pre-release builds with developers and enthusiasts to optimize the operating system's performance. After three long months, Apple is finally ready to expand iOS 18's availability to the public, and you can get your hands on the release right away. iOS 18 introduces a revamped Home Screen with support for dark and tinted app icons. It also allows users to place app icons anywhere on the grid. Other major customizations include a modular Control Center and replaceable Lock Screen toggles. Beyond the cosmetics, this iOS update enables RCS support, assuming your carrier has implemented the feature. Unlike Google's execution, RCS on iOS relies on individual carrier support, so it won't work for all users on day one. Those using iMessage instead will get some new exclusives, such as text formatting, more message effects, and emoji reactions. This update also brings a dedicated Passwords app that houses your existing iCloud Keychain passwords, 2FA codes, and saved Wi-Fi networks. It also completely redesigns the Photos app, allowing users to rearrange, add, and remove entire sections from the application. Unfortunately, iOS 18.0 doesn't offer any Apple Intelligence features. Those anticipating the AI goods will have to wait until October -- when iOS 18.1 will introduce the first batch.

iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are finally available for everyone - without any Apple Intelligence features
Apple announced iOS 18 at its WWDC developers conference on June 10, releasing the first developer beta of the update immediately after the opening keynote. After several months of beta releases, Apple is today finally rolling out iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 to everyone - just in time for the new iPhone 16 release. Aside from the focus of Apple Intelligence, there's a redesigned Photos app, there are more customization options for your Home Screen (begone, grid!) and icons can be tinted. RCS messaging is also now available, too. To update to iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 head into the Settings app on your device. Go to General and then Software Update. If you don't see iOS 18 immediately, select the option at the top of your screen where you can pick between iOS 17 and iOS 18. Note that updates may take a while to install while the update is so new, as many users will be scrambling to download it. We recommend making an iCloud backup of all your important content. From photos to videos, it's always a good idea to prepare your iPhone before updating its software. As you might expect, the headline feature of iOS 18 is the new Apple Intelligence suite of AI features - but you won't find it in the first release of iOS 18. Apple Intelligence will be available on iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro later this year, offering features like live transcribing, Writing Tools, generative image creation, and more. It also features new emergency features like Messages Via Satellite and Emergency SOS Live Video, as well as Roadside Assistance via Satellite. Apple Intelligence will debut as part of iOS 18.1 and beyond in October. The first rollouts will be U.S. English only, with localizations for English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. coming in December. There's support for Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish coming next year, too.

iOS 18 is here with RCS and homepage customization features
Apple is rolling out iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, which will introduce a bunch of new features to the iPhone and iPad. One of the biggest changes with today's launch is the addition of RCS messaging, which should help improve communication with Android users. First announced in June, RCS messaging will finally allow iPhone and Android users to share high-res photos and videos, see typing indicators, and use read receipts. (Messages from Android users will still appear in green bubbles, though.) Some other messaging upgrades in iOS 18 include new text effects and formatting options in iMessage and the ability to schedule messages to send later. iPhone users will also be able to send messages via satellite. Additionally, iOS 18 includes new homepage customization options to rearrange, resize, and change the colors of app icons and widgets. There's a big design overhaul coming to the Photos app, too, along with a revamped iPhone Control Center and the launch of Apple's new password management app. iOS 18 also adds the ability to control Matter devices locally from the Home app without a home hub (you'll need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer for Thread devices). The updated Home app will let you give guests access to locks, garage doors, and alarm systems. There's a new way to unlock doors without taking out your phone as well, but there are no smart locks that support hands-free unlocking yet. As for what's new with iPadOS 18, the update will finally bring a calculator app to the iPad after over a decade without one. You can download the update to your iPhone or iPad by heading to Settings, selecting General > Software Update, and then following the steps to install iOS 18. If you've been wanting to try out the new AI features coming to Apple's devices, you're going to have to wait for iOS 18.1. Apple is rolling out new tools to help you rewrite and summarize text, generate images with Image Playground, and interact with a more conversational Siri as part of the iOS 18.1 public beta in October.

iOS 18 release: everything you need to know about Apple's big updates
iPhone upgrade joined by watchOS 11, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, adding new features to Apple's devices Apple will release software updates for its iPhone, iPad, Mac and smartwatch on Monday, adding new features and designs for compatible devices. Announced at the company's developer conference in June, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11 and macOS Sequoia add extensive new home screen and control centre customisation options, smart handwriting and maths tools for Notes and new watch faces, among other new features. Here's what you need to know about the updates. Downloads for iOS, iPadOS, watchOS and macOS updates usually start at about 6pm UK time (1pm in New York; 3am in Sydney). Unlike other manufacturers, all eligible Apple devices will be able to download and install the update the moment it is released rather than in a staggered fashion. All Apple smartphones from 2018's iPhone XS or newer can install iOS 18. All tablets from the 2018 iPad Pro or 2019 iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad mini (5th gen) or iPad (6th gen) and newer can install iPadOS 18. All Apple Watches from the 2020's Series 6 or newer can install watchOS 11. All MacBook Airs from 2020, MacBook Pros from 2018, Mac minis from 2018, iMacs from 2019, Mac Studios from 2022, the 2017 iMac Pro and 2019 Mac Pro or later can install macOS Sequoia. Open the Settings app on an iPhone or iPad then navigate to General > Software Update. Tap install if available to download, verify and then reboot to install. You can also install the update via a Mac or iTunes on a Windows computer. WatchOS 11 requires an iPhone XS or later to be running iOS 18 first. Then open the Watch app on the phone and navigate to General > Software Update to begin the installation. You will need to put the smartwatch on its charger to complete the update. Macs are updated in System Settings, navigate to General > Software Update. The updates are free from Apple. If you are being asked to pay for an update it is a scam. Apple's various new AI tools, such as its writing and language tools, summarisation, AI photo editing and improved Siri are not available yet, and won't be added to any of its products until later this year in beta starting in October for the US and December for the UK. Apple has finally allowed you to place app icons and widgets on the home screen in any pattern, not just filled from the top left. App icons can now be made bigger, and can be tinted to either match dark mode or with a colour. Control centre has been overhauled allowing a large range of quick settings to be added in different sizes and shapes with additional pages available to swipe through, so you can have one page dedicated to music or another with smart home controls. The quick controls on the lock screen can also be changed. The photos app has been overhauled with big featured photos and carousels. It now automatically creates collections of photos based on topics such as recent days, trips or people and pets. You can create your own collections and pin the most important collections or albums for quick access, or reorganise the app to make it the way you like it. Apple has finally added RCS support to the messages app, which will make texting Android users easier, particularly with media and read receipts. You can now schedule and send messages at a later date, handy for sending birthday greetings. Text can now be animated in iMessages and reactions can now include any emoji or sticker. The notes app can now record audio and create live transcripts, which can be searched or combined with other documents. It can also now solve maths expressions and calculations for you. Apple's Keychain has been turned into a proper password manager with the new Passwords app, which is available on all Apple devices and Windows. Apple Maps can now save topographic maps offline and create custom routes to walks and hikes. The iPad gets the same customisation, photos, messages, passwords and maps features, alongside a few key upgrades just for the tablet. The Notes app gets a big upgrade for handwriting using the Apple Pencil. It can automatically smooth out less legible writing, correct spelling, move written words around like you can with printed text and even paste text as a copy of your own handwriting. The Calculator app has finally be released on the iPad, but with a twist. It can perform calculations from handwritten expressions, including algebraic variables, and even plot graphs. The same "Maths Notes" ability to instantly solve expressions is also available in the Notes app for inline calculations. A updated Photos Face is the new watch face for watchOS 11, creating faces from your photos with smart framing and placing of the time. You can choose a selection of photos or have it automatically pick the best ones from your library. The new Vitals app gives the data tracked overnight while you sleep a new, more useful home. It features your heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and sleep duration, and shows when any one of them varies from your typical range, potentially highlighting issues and giving a description of what might have caused the variation, such as alcohol consumption. The activity app can now track and show your training load for workouts and whether your body is recovering sufficiently between each session. You can also track you effort rating or how hard each workout was calculated from your pace, elevation, heart rate and other biometric data. Live activities, such as ongoing timers, music playback, Uber trips or similar, are now visible in the smart stack for quick access. The double tap gesture can now scroll in most apps, so you can flick through things by double pinching your finger and thumb together. The watch can now track pregnancies, displaying gestational age, as part of its cycle tracking for women. MacOS gets most of the new features common to the iPhone and iPad, plus a few computer-specific additions. The big new feature is the ability to wirelessly mirror and control your iPhone from your Mac, allowing you to open apps, see notifications and generally use a virtual version of your phone with your keyboard and mouse. MacOS can now automatically tile your windows on your screen, such as snapping windows to half a screen by dragging it to the left or right side. Hover over the green button on a window to see a drop down of tiling options.

iOS 18 Is Releasing Today. Here's How To Download the Latest iPhone OS
Nelson Aguilar is an LA-based tech how-to writer and graduate of UCLA. With more than a decade of experience, he covers Apple and Google and writes on iPhone and Android features, privacy and security settings and more. Apple is expected to release iOS 18 for everyone on Monday, Sept. 16. The latest software update for the iPhone will be available for download starting at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET today. But there are a few things you should know before you attempt to install iOS 18. iOS 18 brings several major changes, as well as smaller tweaks, to your phone, including a more customizable home screen, a redesigned control center and photo album, the ability to lock and hide your apps, RCS support for better text messaging with Android users and more. If you want to download and install iOS 18 today, here's everything you need to know. For more, check out the 9 best hidden features on iOS 18, as well as the 7 things you should do right after downloading iOS 18. iOS 18 does not work on every iPhone, but fortunately the list of supported devices is pretty extensive. You can download and install iOS 18 on the iPhone XR or XS (release in 2018) and later. Unfortunately, Apple Intelligence feature will start rolling out next month, in October, with the release of iOS 18.1. If you want to try out some AI features right now, like text message summaries and voice memo transcriptions, you can try out the developer beta of iOS 18.1, but you'll need either the iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max or the iPhone 16. Not everyone will be happy with everything that iOS 18 has to offer, which is why it's important to take precautions before updating from iOS 17. The best way to protect yourself is to back up your iPhone before you update to iOS 18, because this will give you the ability to revert to iOS 17 if iOS 18 doesn't work out for you. While you can update your iPhone via iCloud (Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now), this isn't the right back up for restoring back to an older iOS version. What you want to do instead is back up your iPhone with your computer and then create an archive backup. Check out Jeff's guide on how to back up your iPhone the right way if you want to learn how to create a local archive on your Mac or Windows computer. Once you've backed up your compatible iPhone, you'll need to do the following so that the installation process goes smoothly: You should also check out these easy tricks for optimizing your iPhone storage. Now comes the easy part -- downloading and installing iOS 18. On your supported iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. If you do this right at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, you may need to wait a few seconds or minutes for the update to appear. Once it does, hit Install Now to install iOS 18 on your phone. Enter your passcode to begin the update process. You should see a loading bar, along with an estimate of how long it will take to download and install iOS 18. Once the download is complete, your phone will restart and iOS 18 should be downloaded on your device.

Apple releases iOS 18 for iPhones, but it doesn't include Apple Intelligence
CEO of Apple Tim Cook shows a peace sign as Apple holds an event at the Steve Jobs Theater on its campus in Cupertino, California, U.S. September 9, 2024. Apple on Monday released iOS 18, the latest version of its software for iPhones. This is Apple's biggest iPhone update of the year, but this rollout doesn't include the company's forthcoming AI system, Apple Intelligence, which is the focus of Apple's new ads. Apple Intelligence will be released to the public in a beta version later this fall, and it will come as part of a separate software, Apple said. The iOS 18 update will change the way the iPhone operating system looks and feels. One of the banner features this year is the ability to change the color of the home screen's icons. In general, the iPhone's new user interface will have a large number of customization options. Separately, many of Apple's apps have been redesigned or updated. In particular, Apple's Messages app will gain the ability to send RCS messages, which turn SMS text messages -- known to some iPhone users as green bubbles -- into a more modern experience with better photo quality and typing indicators. The update is available for all iPhones released in 2018 or later. You can download it inside Settings > General > Software Update.

You Should Update Your iPhone to iOS 18, Here's How to Download
We’re getting iOS 18 alongside iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia. If you’re hoping to see Apple Intelligence on iPhone 15 or iPhone 16, you’ll need to wait. Apple is deploying iOS 18 to users today, and you’ll be able to access new features both bigâ€"like a remappable Control Center and home screenâ€"and smallâ€"like Activation Lock. Don’t expect Apple Intelligence to arrive immediately for those who loathe to use yet another dull AI art generator that might be thankful, though only temporary, reprieve. If you already have iOS 17 installed, you should soon receive a notification to update. A few of us at Gizmodo already had our updates on our devices. The update is rolling out staggered to iPhone users. You’ll need an iPhone XS or later to receive the update. Those are the phones with the A12 Bionic chip or later. The update requires users to have between 5 GB and 10 GB of additional storage on their phones. If you need to delete anything, you’ll get the option when you update, or you can go to the Settings app, then hit General, and go to iPhone Storage. To find out if you’re up for an update, go to your Settings app, then scroll down to General. Next, hit Software Update and wait for the phone to tell you if your phone is available for the iOS 18 update. You can install the update later when the device is plugged in or right then and there. Simply follow the instructions, and you should be good to go. Just note this will require a phone restart. As for any Apple Intelligence features, you’ll need to own an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 announced last week at Glowtime. However, you won’t see most or any of these AI features at launch on Sept. 20. Apple hinted we might get them in October, but if you want to try out a spare few AI features, you’ll need to opt for the iOS 18 developer beta. Just know that you may not receive all the latest iOS 18 features, and you might encounter more glitches if you try out iOS 18.1. The update will also come to anybody with a 2nd- or 3rd-gen iPhone SE. The full list of compatible iPhones includes: Additionally, macOS 15 Sequoia and iPadOS 18 are dropping today. iPads are getting a bevy of new features, including the same Control Center and home screen customizability as iOS 18. There are also updated Notes and Calculator apps that will interpret handwritten math formulas and solve them for you. My favorite feature now on the latest Mac update is easily iPhone mirroring. You'll want to make sure both devices are fully updated before you try it out.

iOS 18 Is Almost Here but It Won't Run on Every iPhone. Here's What You Need To Know
Nelson Aguilar is an LA-based tech how-to writer and graduate of UCLA. With more than a decade of experience, he covers Apple and Google and writes on iPhone and Android features, privacy and security settings and more. The iPhone 16 series and Apple Watch Series 10 will both be released soon, but if you're waiting for iOS 18 -- today, Monday, Sept. 16, is the day Apple releases the latest version of iOS for the iPhone. Here's everything you need to know. For iOS 18, you'll be happy to know that every iPhone model that currently supports iOS 17 will also support iOS 18. If you're currently running iOS 17, you'll definitely be able to upgrade to iOS 18. Here's the full list of the iPhone models that will support iOS 18: Apple Intelligence, Apple's generative AI system for your iPhone, is one important aspect of iOS 18. Apple Intelligence will be released next month with iOS 18.1, as a beta, for the general public. It's currently available on the iOS 18.1 developer beta. You can use Apple Intelligence to quickly summarize text in Safari, create personalized images in Messages and ask Siri to perform more complex tasks than ever before -- but Apple Intelligence isn't coming to every iPhone. Only a few select iPhone models will support Apple Intelligence: Apple Intelligence will also be available on iPadOS 18.1 and MacOS Sequoia 15.1. It will only work on iPad and Mac models with M1 and later. The two iPhone 15 Pro models are the only older models that support Apple Intelligence, because they both have the A17 Pro processor.

Apple has finally dropped iOS 18. Here's what's changed
From Nvidia to Apple, tech stocks could get a boost from Fed rate cuts, analysts say The tech giant debuted its latest iPhone, smartwatch, and AirPod models last week at its annual event. While hardware tends to take center stage for most consumers, iOS 18 stole the spotlight as the first operating software to support Apple's first foray into AI, Apple Intelligence. While the iPhone 16, which became available for pre-order Friday, comes loaded with AI, Apple Intelligence features will roll out as a software update next month. These delays have tempered some of the excitement for the new lineup of smartphones, which saw a yearly drop-off in first-weekend sales compared to the iPhone 15, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Once you upgrade your iPhone, here's what you can expect to see. While all iPhones from the iPhone XR onward will be able to upgrade to the new iOS, only iPhone 15 Pro models and higher will have access to Apple Intelligence. Although analysts have hoped the AI tools will spark a new era of growth and kick off the "biggest upgrade cycle in" Apple's history, a minority of consumers opt to upgrade their iPhone for new features. The rest wait until their phone is obsolete, lost or broken. In the first weekend since its debut, Apple sold about 37 million iPhone 16 smartphones -- down nearly 13% from iPhone 15 first-weekend sales a year ago, according to Kuo's analysis.

What to Do Before Updating to iOS 18
Apple is set to release iOS 18 later today, bringing new features and enhancements to compatible devices. Before updating to the latest version of the operating system, it is essential to consider several factors to ensure a smooth transition and minimize potential issues. These factors include device compatibility, backup procedures, and performance expectations. The video below from iDeviceHelp gives us a range of tips on how to get your iPhone ready for the update. Checking Device Compatibility and Alternatives iOS 18 will support all devices currently running iOS 17. If your device is compatible with iOS 17, it will also be able to run iOS 18 without any issues. However, if you prefer to stay on iOS 17 for any reason, such as stability or familiarity, you have the option to install version 17.7 instead. This version includes important security patches from iOS 18, ensuring that your device remains secure even without upgrading to the new operating system. Backing Up Your Data Before the Update Before proceeding with the iOS 18 update, it is crucial to back up your data to prevent any potential loss during the process. Apple's iCloud service provides a convenient way to back up your photos, messages, and other important data. To ensure the safety of your information, follow these steps: By taking these precautions, you can safeguard your data and minimize the risk of losing important files during the update. Understanding the Rollout of Apple Intelligence Features One of the highly anticipated features of iOS 18 is the introduction of Apple Intelligence, which brings advanced AI capabilities to compatible devices. However, it is important to note that these features will not be available in the initial release of iOS 18. Instead, Apple Intelligence will be rolled out in October with the release of iOS 18.1, specifically targeting the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup. This delayed release allows Apple to refine and optimize these features for the best possible user experience. What to Expect Immediately After the Update After updating to iOS 18, you may notice some temporary changes in your device's behavior. It is common for the device to feel slightly warmer and experience some choppiness or lag during the first 10-15 minutes after the update. This is a normal part of the process as the device indexes and stabilizes the new operating system. To ensure a smooth transition, it is recommended to avoid heavy usage during this period and allow the device to complete the necessary background tasks. Battery Life Considerations Battery performance is a critical factor for many users when deciding whether to update to a new operating system. It is worth noting that iOS 17 has been reported to offer better battery life compared to iOS 18. If battery stability is a top priority for you, you may consider staying on iOS 17 for the time being. This version has proven to provide more consistent battery performance, which can be crucial for daily use and long-term device satisfaction. Performance Benchmarks and Comparisons When evaluating the performance of iOS 18 against its predecessor, benchmark scores provide valuable insights. Recent tests have shown that iOS 17.6.1 outperforms iOS 18 in both single-core and multi-core scores. These results suggest that iOS 17.6.1 offers better overall performance, which may be a deciding factor for users who prioritize speed and responsiveness. If performance is a key consideration for you, it may be wise to wait for further updates to iOS 18 before making the switch. Recommendation for a Smooth Transition If you are not in immediate need of the new features offered by iOS 18, it may be beneficial to wait for subsequent updates, such as iOS 18.0.1 or 18.0.2. These updates are likely to address any initial issues discovered in the first release and provide improved stability and performance. By waiting for these updates, you can minimize potential disruptions and ensure a smoother transition to the new operating system. By following these essential steps and considering the factors outlined above, you can make an informed decision about updating to iOS 18. Taking the time to prepare your device, back up your data, and evaluate your priorities will help you navigate the update process with confidence and minimize any potential issues along the way.
