India's Job Market Shows Positive Growth in February 2025

India's white-collar job market has maintained its growth momentum in February 2025, recording a 4% year-on-year increase according to the latest Naukri JobSpeak Index. This positive trend comes as a welcome change, especially considering the 8% decline observed in February of the previous year 12.

AI and Hospitality Sectors Lead the Surge

The growth in the job market was primarily driven by two key sectors:

  1. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI-ML): This sector witnessed a remarkable 21% rise in hiring, continuing its buoyant trend 2.
  2. Hospitality: The industry rebounded strongly with a 20% year-on-year increase, reversing last February's 3% decline 2.

Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer at Naukri, commented on the trend, stating, "While AI/ML hiring continues its buoyant trend, it is also encouraging to see sectors like Hospitality driving growth" 1.

Other Sectors Showing Positive Performance

Several other sectors also contributed to the overall growth:

  • Real Estate: 9% increase 12
  • FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods): 8% growth 12
  • Pharmaceuticals: 5% increase 12
  • Global Capability Centres (GCC): 2% growth 12

However, the banking sector continued to decline, showing a 6% decrease in hiring 12.

IT Sector and Emerging Tech Hubs

While overall IT hiring remained flat, there were signs of improvement compared to the steep decline witnessed throughout 2024. Interestingly, emerging IT cities bucked the trend:

  • Jaipur: 19% growth in IT hiring 12
  • Coimbatore: 10% increase 12

High-Demand Roles and Specialized Positions

The surge in hiring extended to specialized tech roles, with significant growth observed in:

  • Data Scientists: 76% increase 2
  • Machine Learning Engineers: 70% growth 2
  • Search Engineers: 52% rise 2
  • Security Consultants: 44% increase 2

Fresher Hiring and Senior Professionals

Overall fresher hiring remained relatively flat in February 2025. However, certain sectors showed notable increases:

  • Hospitality: 23% growth in fresher recruitment 12
  • Telecom: 11% increase 12

Interestingly, there was also an uptick in hiring for senior professionals with over 16 years of experience, showing a 15% increase. High-salary roles (Rs 20 lakh per annum-plus) witnessed a significant 21% jump 2.

Retail Sector Performance

While the overall retail sector experienced a 4% decline, certain sub-sectors showed strong growth:

  • Consumer Durables: 25% increase 2
  • Garments and Accessories: 15% growth 2
  • Beauty and Wellness: 13% rise 2

These sub-sectors also noted advances in fresher hiring 2.

The positive growth in India's white-collar job market, especially in AI-ML and hospitality sectors, indicates a recovering employment landscape. As the market continues to evolve, the demand for specialized tech roles and experienced professionals suggests a shift towards high-skill, high-value positions in the Indian job market.
