Lenovo Unveils Innovative AI Ring and 3D Laptop Concept at MWC 2025

Lenovo's concept smart ring wants to make Minority Report's spatial UI real

At Mobile World Congress (MWC), Lenovo unveiled the ThinkBook 3D Laptop Concept. This computer features two notable highlights, the first being its glasses-free hybrid display that lets you swap between 2D and 3D modes. Whether you're in 2D or 3D, the 3.2K (3200 x 2000) resolution will be sure to keep images looking crisp. However, it's the second highlight that makes this concept intriguing. Along with the laptop, Lenovo has created a smart ring accessory that works in tandem with the computer. Called the Lenovo AI Ring, this device allows the user to navigate, manipulate 3D models, and interact with UI without touching the laptop. The ring itself contains high-precision sensors and uses AI-powered motion tracking to give users control with gestures. With it, you can do all the usual spatial computing tricks like rotating objects, zooming in and out, and interacting with 3D environments.

Lenovo always has interesting concepts down the pipeline, and sometimes we get to see these come alive, like the rollable ThinkBook Plus Gen 6. Now, it's looking into 3D displays, but with the added bonus of an AI ring. At MWC 2025, Lenovo revealed its ThinkBook 3D Laptop Concept, which comes equipped with a 3.2K (3200 x 2000) display that can seamlessly switch between 2D and 3D visuals -- no glasses needed. These are hardly anything new, as we've seen Acer announce a glasses-free 3D laptop last year, but the real kicker is the Lenovo AI Ring concept that comes with it. Aimed at creative professionals, the ThinkBook 3D laptop delivers a hybrid display that allows users to see 3D objects in the display, and it also comes with a claimed 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage for clear color accuracy. As Lenovo notes, this makes it an "ideal tool for designers, engineers, and media professionals working with complex visual projects." Since it's just a concept, there's no word of the laptop's specs. However, considering its design, it's sure to deliver the ThinkBook internals we'd expect for a next-gen laptop, including Intel Core Ultra 200 series or AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series CPUs. The camera up top appears to do a lot of the heavy 3D work for your eyes, and while the idea of a 3D display on a laptop sounds ideal, it would need to come at the right price. But what sets this laptop concepot apart is the AI ring accessory that comes with it... More in line with a trackpad ring we've seen with the Halliday smart glasses rather than one of the best smart rings that tracks health and sleep, the Lenovo AI RIng proof of concept allows gesture-based controls on the laptop. That's an ideal match for creative professionals working on 3D models, as it allows them to navigate, manipulate, adjust and control the design hands-free -- all without touching the laptop. As Lenovo notes, the AI Ring comes with high-precision sensors driven for AI-driven motion tracking, allowing users to "rotate objects, zoom and interact with 3D environments with simple hand movements." It's Lenovo's push in the spatial computing space, and with AI image generators such as Midjourney using 3D creation models these days, having an AI ring to interact with it all could be an idea worth investing in. There's still a lot to learn about Lenovo's 3D Laptop concept and its AI Ring, including whether it will come to market or not, but one thig is clear: Lenovo has plenty of ideas up its sleeve, and it's giving us a taste of what the future of laptops beyond 2025 could ook like.

Lenovo's AI Ring Let Me Control a 3D PC With a Click of My Fingers, Like a Wizard

It measures your steps, your stress levels, your sleep -- you get it. But wait! Lenovo's concept AI smart ring is a whole different kettle of fish. I'll admit that when I tried it on just now at Mobile World Congress here in Barcelona, it looked and felt much like the smart rings I've worn before. It had the profile of a man's wedding ring, with slightly too much bulk around the sides. Form is one thing though, function another entirely. The point of this ring is to allow for gesture-based control of Lenovo's ThinkBook 3D Laptop (also currently a concept). The laptop itself has a directional 3D backlight that allows 2D and 3D content to appear next to each other simultaneously on the same screen. The ring allows you to manipulate that 3D content, spinning it around and upside down -- here's how. Read more: MWC 2025: All the Phones, Wearables, Robots and AI Live From Barcelona With the ring worn on your pointer finger, you can use your thumb to double tap (to enter or go forward) or single tap (to go back) on an illuminated dot, then swipe either side to navigate around. In the demo I was shown, I could navigate between 3D models, including a T. rex and a spaceship, and examine them from all angles simply by gently grazing the ring. Best of all, was that the ring could sense when I was snapping my fingers. In the demo I was able to flick through a presentation of slides simply by clicking with my thumb and middle finger. I didn't even touch the ring, but it could clearly read the vibration in my hand. I felt a little like a wizard -- albeit a wizard presenting a slide deck (and if I were a wizard I'd probably use my powers to avoid being in a corporate job). The clicking was seamless, but the gesture control was tricky to get the hang of and didn't always work exactly how it was supposed to. It's important to remember though that this is just a concept for now, and as a concept, it's one I liked. Wearable tech often ends up simply being variations on a theme -- that theme being fitness tracking -- but this showed a sense of imagination and ambition that I'd love to see more of in the growing smart ring market.
