LG Electronics teams up with US AI chipmaker for in-cabin sensing technology
A promotional image of LG Electronics' in-cabin sensing technology / Courtesy of LG Electronics By Nam Hyun-woo LG Electronics said Thursday it will team up with U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) chipmaker Ambarella to roll out an advanced in-cabin sensing solution, which monitors the status of the driver and the vehicle cabin. According to LG Electronics, its driver monitoring technology will be embedded into Ambarella's AI-powered edge system-on-chip (SoC) module, capable of sensing and processing data directly on the module without connecting to the cloud. LG Electronics' driver monitoring technology uses cameras to detect and analyze the driver's eye movement and head position. If the system detects signs of inattentive behavior, such as drowsiness or cellphone use, it triggers a warning sound, helping to ensure the safety of the driver, passengers and pedestrians. LG Electronics said this latest module will be showcased at Ambarella's booth at next year's Consumer Electronics Show slated for Jan. 8 to 11. The in-cabin sensing market is expected to experience stable growth as automakers increasingly view related technologies as critical for New Car Assessment Programs by transportation authorities worldwide. Market tracker Roland Berger projects that the global market for advanced driver assistance systems, which includes in-cabin sensing will grow from $25.3 billion in 2025 to $53.2 billion by 2030. "Through cooperation with Ambarella and other partner firms, LG Electronics will spearhead the industry for vehicle safety by setting new safety standards for in-cabin sensing solutions," an official at the company said.
