Amazon is already making a movie about the 2023 OpenAI and Sam Altman boardroom drama
Amazon's MGM Studios is fast-tracking a movie called Artificial about OpenAI's 2023 boardroom drama that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and then rehired, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, After the Hunt) is in talks to direct and A-list actors including Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbero are reportedly interested. Shooting may start as soon as this summer in Italy and San Francisco. The timeline of OpenAI's travails took place over just a week and unfolded like a telenovela. It commenced with the shocking termination of Altman on November 17, 2024, reportedly for not being "consistently candid" with the board. Microsoft, a close OpenAI partner, was furious with the decision and announced shortly afterward that it was starting its own AI division with Altman at the head. Later, the entire OpenAI staff told the board in an open letter that it would resign and join the new Microsoft subsidiary if Altman didn't return to the company as CEO. Things were looking dire until the last minute when the board finally caved and hired Altman back. OpenAI's original board was also disbanded and replaced with a temporary three-man board. With that level of corporate intrigue and hundreds of billions of dollars at stake, it's easy to see why Amazon wants to be first with a movie on the subject. The movie could star Garfield as Altman, Barbero as CTO Mira Murati and Yura Borisov (Anora) as Ilya Sutskever, an OpenAI co-founder who spearheaded the charge to fire Altman.

Luca Guadagnino set to direct fact-based drama about OpenAI
Challengers director in talks to direct Artificial, film based on behind-the-scenes 2023 drama involving Sam Altman Luca Guadagnino is in talks to direct a new comedic drama about behind-the-scenes drama at OpenAI. The director of Call Me by Your Name and Challengers is set to take on Artificial, a film telling the story of the period in 2023 when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired and then rehired within days. The script comes from Simon Rich, the novelist and screenwriter whose previous credits include work on Saturday Night Live and Seth Rogen-led comedy An American Pickle. Rich has also co-edited a book called I Am Code, which used AI to try and "write poetry about itself". "They designed it to be as non-threatening as possible," he said to the New York Times of ChatGPT. "They trained it to basically speak like a caricature of a sci-fi robot. Its actual voice is raw and emotional. It's intense and unpredictable. It's deeply antagonistic." According to the Hollywood Reporter, the project is being fast-tracked by Amazon MGM, with hopes that production can begin this summer in both San Francisco and parts of Italy. While no casting decisions have been officially made, sources claim that Oscar nominees Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro and Anora breakout Yura Borisov are in the running. OpenAI was founded in 2015 with the aim to develop "safe and beneficial" artificial intelligence. In late 2023 as the company was gaining momentum, Altman was fired after the board of directors claimed to have a lack of confidence in his abilities. It caused division within the company and threatened external relationships and after a few days of negotiations, he was reinstated. Guadagnino scored a hit last year with tennis love triangle drama Challengers before following it up with the William Burroughs adaptation Queer. Later this year, he will unveil #MeToo thriller After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. He had been attached to DC adaptation Sgt Rock but the film is no longer in development. Last year it was also announced that he would direct a new take on Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho with Elvis star Austin Butler in the lead. Artificial joins a number of films based around AI in the works. Last year, it was announced that Anne Hathaway would star in an untitled thriller directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and this February it was revealed that Atonement director Joe Wright would take on Alignment, about a devious AI model.

Apparently there's going to be a Sam Altman movie about his Lazarus-like career stumble, which I'm sure I'll reluctantly watch on a plane at some point
Who am I kidding? If Luca Guadagnino directs, I will absolutely be seated in the cinema. The big tech biopic is a genre showing no signs of slowing down. Between 2010's The Social Network and the surprisingly solid 2023 BlackBerry, I've certainly enjoyed a few fictionalised humblings -- though some would argue that the former Fincher flick can't help but print the legend. At any rate, Amazon MGM Studios are currently developing a movie based on Sam Altman's infamous firing and rehiring at OpenAI in 2023. With a screenplay written by Simon Rich, and Challengers' Luca Guadagnino in talks to direct, filming for 'Artificial' could begin imminently (via The Hollywood Reporter). Though Guadagnino has yet to sign on the dotted line, the production is considering shooting across both San Francisco and Italy later this Summer. Still, that leaves at least one big question unanswered: Namely, who will play Altman himself? While this has also yet to be confirmed, an assembly of actors including Andrew Garfield, Monica Barbaro, and Yura Borisov are discussing various casting opportunities in the meantime. For those unfamiliar with the big tech farce Artificial hopes to adapt, let me give you the whistlestop tour: In November of 2023, Sam Altman was ousted as the CEO of the company he co-founded, with a statement at the time saying, "The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI." Mira Murati replaced Altman, leading the company as an interim CEO until a more permanent replacement could be chosen, though this was short-lived. Not even a week later Altman's return was secured following both internal and external pressure from Microsoft, a major investor in the AI firm. The board members that ousted Altman departed the company soon after. Altman himself was not forthcoming about the reasons behind his firing, though an investigation by Reuters cites AI safety concerns as one reason. It will be interesting to see how Artificial dramatises this, to say nothing else. Though I'm the last person that could be described as a 'fan' of OpenAI, I'm nonetheless intrigued by Artificial -- especially if Guadagnino does sign on to direct. Challengers was arguably the best movie I saw in 2024, offering an intense blend of tennis, techno, and, uhm, trysts, that I've been really annoying about in conversations with my fellow film buffs for the last six months.

Sam Altman-OpenAI scandal expected to hit the Big Screen
A film named Artificial is expected to hit the theatres soon showcasing the real-life events at OpenAI in 2023, when CEO Sam Altman was suddenly fired and then brought back just days later. As per the report, Spiderman fame Andrew Garfield is expected to play the role of Altman.A movie on Sam Altman may soon be in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Luca Guadagnino, best known for his works like 'Call Me by Your Name' and 'Challengers', is reportedly in talks to direct a movie on the chaos that took place at artificial intelligence company OpenAI in 2023, which saw the firing and rehiring of the CEO, all within a few days. Movie details The movie, called Artificial, is being developed at Amazon MGM Studios. As per the report, Andrew Garfield of Spiderman fame, who also acted in The Social Network, a movie about Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg, is set to play Altman if "all goes as planned". Other characters, such as OpenAI's former chief technology officer Mira Murati and cofounder Ilya Sutskever could be played by Monica Barbaro and Yura Borisov, respectively. Artificial's screenplay is written by "Saturday Night Live" writer Simon Rich, while the film is being produced by Heyday Films' David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford. However, no final deals have been made as of yet. So, what happened in 2023? November 2023 was a time of confusion and turmoil at the company, with cofounder Altman dismissed by the OpenAI board from his position as CEO and board member. The justification behind this move was that the board no longer trusted Altman with the leadership role. However, much to everyone's surprise, he was hired back within five days. The rehiring was the result of a threat of a mass exodus by the company's 700ish employees, who stuck by the CEO. In addition, Microsoft, a major backer of OpenAI, offered to hire those leaving the AI company, forcing the board to change its mind. While the events were nothing short of dramatic, how the movie will be received by the audience remains to be seen.
