Apple's iPhone 16 lineup is mere days away from launch, and while the new devices will be the highlight of the event, we are also expecting the company to introduce new software updates for the latest devices as well as the existing ones. Apple usually releases final iOS updates a week after the devices have been announced. We expect the company to introduce the new iPhone 16 lineup in the first half of September and a new report claims that Apple will launch macOS Sequoia in mid-September, which will be accompanied by iOS 18 and other updates. MacRumors reported that sources familiar with the matter have suggested the possible release time frame of macOS Sequoia, which sometimes arrives a week or so later than the rest of the updates. This time around, though, Apple is expected to release all of the updates together, which will be a welcome change for users. Last year, users had to wait a few extra weeks to get their hands on the new update, as some features were not ready for the final release. With the updates launching together, users will be able to use the new features on their devices, such as iPhone Mirroring, a new addition that requires the presence of both the iPhone and Mac running the latest version of the software. Other than this, macOS Sequoia hosts a plethora of front-facing additions, like a new Passwords app, new Safari updates, upgrades in Messages, and much more. However, one of the most notable additions coming this year is Apple Intelligence which will also be available on iOS 18. However, users would have to wait a bit to use the new AI features as the company is already testing a subsequent update to iOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia, which will be available some time in October. We expect the company to debut the devices on September 10, which means that Apple will select September 20th for the release of the new iPhone 16 models. It will be the same time the company releases the new software updates. However, note that there are mere speculations at this stage, and the final word rests with Apple. The company will seed the release of candidate builds of iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and other updates soon after the event. Apple's new desktop operating system, macOS 15 Sequoia, will launch a bit earlier than is typical this year. This is according to a new report by MacRumors, which claims that Apple plans to launch it alongside iOS 18 in mid-September. Both iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia were initially announced during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Apple typically launches new versions of iOS in September, but the latest macOS typically comes a little later. For example, macOS Sonoma launched on Sept. 26, a week after iOS 17. And its predecessor, macOS Ventura, launched on Oct. 24, more than a month after iOS 16. The reason for the unison launch, MacRumors claims, is making sure that cross-platform features, such as iPhone Mirroring, are working as intended at launch. Apple Intelligence features, on the other hand, reportedly won't be part of iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia at launch. These AI features, which include tools that help you write, AI-enabled image creation and editing, and a smarter Siri, will show up in macOS 15.1 and iOS 18.1, which should launch in October. We'll get the official word from Apple in the first half of September, when the company typically holds its iPhone launch event. The most likely date this year is Sept. 10, though Apple has historically launched new iPhones both earlier and later than that.

Typically we expect a new macOS to turn up at any point between September and November, but MacRumors claims that it's going to be the early end of that timeframe. Sources have told the website that macOS 15 is going to launch in mid-September (add your own skepticism, as ever), which means we're going to see Sequoia in just a few weeks' time. That theory is backed up with a complementary nugget of info here, namely that iOS 18 is widely expected to be introduced in mid-September (as every version of the mobile OS has been, for a long time), and Apple wants to debut macOS Sequoia at the same time due to their shared features. We are, of course, talking about the big iPhone Mirroring functionality for macOS 15, and given that, it makes sense for both new operating systems to debut simultaneously, with that ability fully up and running, showing off these fresh cross-platform powers. The most likely date for this double reveal is September 10, by the way, based on past reveals from Apple. We learned earlier this week that the latest iOS 18 beta is going to be the final one, and if MacRumors is right in its assertion here, macOS Sequoia must be in its final stages of testing too. Mind you, we haven't heard rumors to that effect elsewhere - yet - and furthermore, does it really feel like macOS 15 is about to turn the corner to release? We're not sure, but if this really is playing out as stated, we'll know soon enough. In fairness to MacRumors, it certainly makes sense in terms of Apple lining up its OS puzzle pieces for iPhone Mirroring. There is, of course, another chunky puzzle piece and this one won't be coming with either the initial release of iOS 18 or macOS 15, namely Apple Intelligence. These AI features are being tested in a separate macOS beta (15.1, for developers), and the expectation is that they'll come in a later update - mostly likely in October, MacRumors theorizes. And equally likely, Apple Intelligence will arrive alongside new MacBook Pro M4 models (and other Macs besides), doubtless with an illustration of how well the M4 SoC runs the AI capabilities.
