Josh Edelson/AFP via Getty Images Researcher Jesse Dodge did some quick math on how much energy an AI chatbot consumes. A single query to ChatGPT uses roughly the same amount of electricity as turning on a single light bulb for about 20 minutes, he says, so when millions of people use something like that every day, it consumes a very large amount of power. He is a senior research analyst at the Allen Institute for AI, where he studies how artificial intelligence consumes energy. AI consumes much more power to generate answers than traditional internet uses such as search queries and cloud storage. A Goldman Sachs report found that a ChatGPT query requires nearly 10 times the power of a Google search query. As AI becomes more sophisticated, it will require more energy, and in the United States, most of that energy comes from burning fossil fuels like coal and gas, which are the leading causes of climate change. Most companies working on AI, including ChatGPT developer OpenAI, don't disclose their emissions. But last week, Google released a new sustainability report that offered a glimpse of the data. Deep inside the 86-page report, Google said its greenhouse gas emissions last year increased 48% since 2019. The company blamed the surge on data center energy consumption and supply chain emissions. Further integrating AI into products could make it harder to reduce emissions, the report said. Google declined to be interviewed by NPR. "Data centers are getting bigger and bigger, eventually culminating in supercomputers." Google aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. The company claims that its operations are carbon neutral because it has been purchasing carbon offsets to cover its emissions since 2007. But Google wrote in its sustainability report that it will no longer "maintain operational carbon neutrality" after 2023. The company says it remains committed to its 2030 net-zero goal. Dodge says Google's real goal is to build the best AI systems it can, and the company will dedicate huge resources to this, including training them in increasingly large data centers to supercomputers, which consumes huge amounts of electricity and generates huge amounts of carbon dioxide emissions. Microsoft has gone a step further than Google in its climate pledge, saying it will be carbon negative by 2030. But the company has also faced setbacks because of its focus on AI: In a sustainability report released in May, it said its emissions had increased 29% since 2020 due to increased construction of data centers designed and optimized to support AI workloads. The infrastructure and power required for these technologies creates new challenges in meeting sustainability commitments across the technology sector, according to the report. A company spokesman declined to comment further. AI's deep hunger for energy AI requires the computing power of thousands of servers housed in data centers, which in turn require huge amounts of electricity to meet that demand. Northern Virginia is home to a burgeoning data center industry that, according to The Washington Post, will require enough energy to power six million homes in that corner of the state by 2030. Increasing demand for electricity across the country has delayed plans to retire several coal-fired power plants, according to a separate report from The Washington Post. "You have to build an entire physical infrastructure to support AI," said Alex Hanna, research director at the Distributed AI Institute, who worked on Google's ethical AI team before leaving the company in 2022 over its handling of a research paper that highlighted the environmental costs of AI. Hanna said the data center boom will continue to grow as long as there are organizations fully committed to AI. Goldman Sachs looked at the expected growth of data centers in the United States, predicting that by 2030, data centers will consume 8% of the nation's total electricity, up from 3% in 2022. The firm's analysts say the widespread adoption of AI technology, and the data centers needed to supply it, will create a surge in electricity demand the likes of which has not been seen in a generation. According to Bloomberg, there are now more than 7,000 data centers worldwide, up from 3,600 in 2015. Bloomberg estimates that collectively, these data centers use as much electricity as the entire country of Italy for a year. An "AI First" World Every big tech company is going all in on AI. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has called Google an AI-first company. In the past few months, the company released a chatbot called Gemini to the world and added an AI overview tool to Google Search. Facebook parent Meta has added chatbots to several of its products. And Apple last month announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring AI to its digital assistant, Siri. During their first-quarter earnings calls, these companies all said they were investing billions of dollars in AI. Google announced $12 billion in capital expenditures in the quarter alone, much of it on data center investments to accelerate its AI efforts, and said it plans to maintain that same level of spending for the full year. AI researcher Hanna says that without serious intervention, the environmental costs of artificial intelligence will only get worse. "A lot of people out there talk about existential risk around AI, about rogue entities somehow controlling nuclear weapons or whatever," Hanna said. "But that's not a real existential risk. We're facing an existential crisis right now. It's called climate change, and AI is clearly making it worse." Editor's note: Google and Microsoft are financial supporters of NPR. Confusion, Google, and the battle for AI search supremacy
Get your favorite stories delivered straight to your inbox This article is part of Future Explored, a weekly guide to world-changing technologies. Subscribe here to get articles like this delivered straight to your inbox every Saturday morning. It's 2026 and the way we search the web has changed dramatically. Now, instead of telling you where to find the answer, Google and other search engines use AI to answer your questions directly, without you having to click on a link. Who knows what the future holds? Answer Engine The web contains billions of pages, and we rely heavily on search engines to help us find the information we need in that vast amount of data: we ask a question or simply enter a keyword, and the search engine displays a list of links to related pages. Now, large-scale language model (LLM) AI, which is trained on vast portions of the internet and generates text in response to user prompts, allows search engines to generate answers to questions, eliminating the need for users to click on links and find the information themselves. To see what this means for the future of the internet, let's look back at the history of web search, the challenges that LLM-powered answer engines will have to overcome to replace the standard 10 blue links, and what's coming next. Where have we been so far, where are we going now (maybe) LLMs have the potential to fundamentally change the way we search for information on the web. Instead of search engines acting as middlemen telling you where to go to find answers, technology could turn them into answer engines that tell you just what you want to know, without requiring any extra clicks. Google is already considering this possibility. In 2023, we began testing the Search Generative Experience, an experiment that integrates LLM into our search platform. In May 2024, we rolled out AI Overviews to all US users, allowing you to ask Google a question and see a conversational answer above a link to a relevant site. Microsoft, Google's closest rival in search, acted even faster: in February 2023, it released a new version of Bing that, in addition to standard search results, displays responses from Copilot, an AI chatbot built on GPT-4, a more powerful version of the LLM behind ChatGPT. Meanwhile, startups like Perplexity and Andi are gaining popularity with search engines designed from the ground up to provide LLM-generated answers. LLM-powered "answer engines" may be the future of search. So far, LLM hasn't fundamentally changed the way we search the web: since Copilot was released, Bing has only increased its search market share by around 1%, while Google still has over 90%, and these AI startups have yet to make big strides. But it's still possible that LLM-powered answer engines will be the future of search, and it's even possible that Google won't be the company that dominates this new era, but there are many hurdles currently standing between us and that future and what comes after. Liar in a big language LLMs are good at replicating human languages because they have seen a lot of them - for example, the LLM behind ChatGPT was trained on 300 billion words extracted from the internet, books, and other sources. LLM looks at all this data and learns to notice patterns in language, allowing it to generate human-like text by learning the connections between words and predicting what is likely to come next in a sentence based on the words preceding it. "Examples of AI briefs turning Google searches into garbage are all over my timeline." GergelyRussian The problem is that LLM sometimes hallucinates, confidently presenting false information as if it were true: just days after Google released a profile of its AI, users were sharing stories of the AI telling them things like they could cook spaghetti with gasoline or that their dog had played in the NHL. "Google Search is the only property Google needs to remain relevant, trustworthy, and useful. Yet my timeline is flooded with examples of AI briefs turning Google Search into garbage," tweeted Gergely Orosz, author of tech newsletter The Pragmatic Engineer. While Google, Microsoft and others are working to minimize hallucinations, some AI experts believe that the fundamental way LLM works means it's impossible to eliminate them entirely. Dmitry Shevelenko, chief business officer at Perplexity, told Freethink that the company includes link citations for all of its AI answers, which builds a layer of trust, but that users might stick to traditional search if they had to click on links to verify that the information they're getting from the answer engine is accurate. Slowly in and slowly out LLMs aren't just changing search, they're changing the internet as a whole -- and not necessarily for the better. Now that AI is widely available, scammers are using it to generate low-quality, keyword-packed content (aka junk content) for websites, and they are even using the tools to rewrite existing articles from reputable publications like WIRED, TechCrunch, and Reuters. AI-generated content now ranks highly in Google search results, jeopardizing the ability to find useful, unique information through traditional search methods. "This is the worst quality result I've seen on Google in my 14-year career," Lily Ray, senior director of SEO at digital marketing firm Amsive Digital, told Fortune in January 2024. At the moment, it feels like the scammers are winning. AI-generated "junk" is endangering our ability to find trustworthy information on the web. Google is trying to address this sloppy content issue with algorithm updates, but if your content is already showing up in traditional search results, it may also start appearing in answers generated by the LLM-powered search engine simply because the AI doesn't know any better. Some of AI Overviews' odd responses, like its advice to use glue in pizza recipes or to eat rocks for nutrition, may have seemed like random hallucinations at first, but the LLM was working as intended and was simply repeating information it had found online, unaware that the author was joking. If the majority of content on the internet is low-quality and unreliable, it may be even harder for AI-powered search engines to provide useful answers. Plagiarism issues While scammers are using LLM to deliberately deceive trusted news sites, AI-powered search engines may be doing the same, albeit seemingly unintentionally. Google's AI Overview, Microsoft's Copilot, and Perplexity all generate responses to queries that repeat content from other websites verbatim, rather than searching the web for information and organizing what they find into useful, original answers. "Perplexity's success depends on having a healthy information ecosystem." Dmitry Shevelenko The New York Times said it had tried to reach an amicable settlement with Microsoft over the use of its content, but negotiations fell through and it is now suing the tech giant. Perplexity, meanwhile, is addressing the plagiarism issue by making citations more prominent, and Shevelenko told Freethink it is also developing a revenue-sharing program that would earn publishers money when their sites are cited in search results. "We've always understood that Perplexity's success depends on the existence of a healthy information ecosystem," Shevelenko said. "If we no longer have trusted news outlets reporting the facts, we will lose the real-time information we provide to our users." The AI responds to search queries with answers that verbatim repeat content from other websites. Google's plan seems to be to convince publishers that their AI overviews are merely a conceptual match to existing content, and that they actually benefit from this whole situation. "We found that links included in AI Overviews received more clicks than if the pages had appeared as traditional web listings for that query," a Google spokesperson told WIRED (though the company did not provide WIRED with data showing this). Whether or not that's true, many news organizations are already struggling, and if they can't benefit from their articles appearing in answer engines, they may lose all incentive to create quality content, and we may return to the problem of the internet being flooded with indecent content. business model Making money isn't just a concern for content creators competing with LLM: It's not yet clear how the AI-powered search engine itself will make money. The majority of Google's revenue comes from ads that appear next to search results, and in May 2024 it announced plans to place ads above and below AI Overview, and potentially in special sponsored sections within AI Overview. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on Google's advertising revenue, but if users can get the answers they need from AI Overviews, it could lead to fewer clicks on external links (and ads on those websites), as well as fewer sponsored ads appearing in search results. If advertisers don't get clicks, they may stop paying to appear in Google search results. There are more questions than answers about what the introduction of AI Overviews will mean for Google's search ad revenue, Evelyn Mitchell Wolf, senior analyst at eMarketer, told Yahoo! Finance. "There are more questions than answers about what will happen to Google's search advertising revenue." LLM requires huge amounts of computing power, which means it comes at a significant energy cost: in February 2023, John Hennessy, executive chairman of Google's parent company Alphabet, told Reuters that the cost of using LLM to generate answers to search queries would be 10 times higher than the cost of serving a standard linked list. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said he was confident Google could manage these costs and monetization shifts, but AI-powered search is undoubtedly putting strain on its business model. Perplexity is currently funded by investors, but believes it will need multiple revenue streams to be profitable in the future. Users already pay $20 a month to access Perplexity's most powerful AI models, and the company plans to incorporate advertising into its results in the future. Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on a smaller, cheaper version of LLM to handle simpler queries. Ultimately, for LLM-powered search engines to be the future of search, they need to be profitable, but at this point it's not clear how the companies will manage that. Conclusion If Google can overcome the problems mentioned above, it will be in a great position to continue reigning as the king of search, but even if someone else does a better job of search than Google, it will be very hard to dethrone the company. Just a few weeks after ChatGPT's release, Neeva, a startup co-founded by former Google head of advertising Sridhar Ramaswamy, announced it would release a search engine powered by LLM. By February 2023, NeevaAI was available globally. But three months later, the company was shut down, and Ramaswamy and co-founder Vivek Raghunathan say the problem wasn't the product, but that people didn't want to move away from the search engine they were already using: Google. [T]"Throughout this journey, we've learned that building a search engine is one thing, but convincing ordinary users that they need to switch to a better option is quite another," Ramaswamy and Raghunathan wrote in a May 2023 blog post. They continued that user acquisition was a real challenge, from the unnecessary friction required to change default search settings to the difficulty of getting people to understand the difference between a search engine and a browser. Ultimately, platforms that provide answers to our questions may be the future of search, or it may just be something we briefly experiment with before reverting to the list of links we're familiar with. As with all things related to LLMs and generative AI, it's still too early to make confident predictions. We'd love to hear from you! Why a proposed 'robot tax' could stifle innovation, stifle growth, and complicate tax code
It is often said that governments have a knack for taxation. But the real surprise comes when economists start welcoming tax hikes. A group of economists recently met Nirmala Sitharaman for pre-budget consultations. What came up on the agenda? The impact of AI on employment and a proposal for a "robot tax" to reskill displaced workers. At first glance, the idea sounds appealing. At its heart are philosophical questions about the nature of work, economic justice, and social progress. Proponents argue that a robot tax would ensure a fair distribution of wealth created by automation and conform to the "difference principle," which dictates that social and economic inequalities be adjusted to benefit the less fortunate in society. This perspective suggests that taxes can mitigate unemployment, fund retraining programs, support social safety nets, and prevent the widening of the gap between rich and poor and the worsening of social inequality as robots take over human jobs. According to a 2020 study by Daron Acemoglu and Pascual Restrepo entitled "Robots and Work: Evidence from the U.S. Labor Market," an additional robot per 1,000 workers in the United States reduces the employment-population ratio by 0.2 percentage points and wages by 0.42%. But is AI-induced unemployment a temporary phenomenon in the long run? This is where we should quote John Maynard Keynes. In his 1931 essay "Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren," he argued that technological unemployment (job losses caused by technological change) is a temporary phase, followed by an era of prosperity. While technological unemployment can lead to increased productivity and economic growth in the long run, it poses significant challenges in the short run, such as income inequality. However, there are several problems with implementing a robot tax. Impeding growth: It unfairly punishes innovation and entrepreneurship, stifles growth, and undermines market evolution. Robert Nozick's theory of rights argues that wealth created by free exchange and innovation should not be forcibly redistributed, as this would violate the principles of justice in acquisition and transfer. Empirical studies support this, showing that while robots replace some workers, they also contribute to increased productivity and economic expansion, creating new opportunities. Taxing robots distorts investment decisions, leading companies to prefer traditional physical capital over automation, making robots more expensive to use. Initially, this increases worker productivity, wages, and total income, temporarily lifting economic production. However, long-term suppression of automation investment impedes sustained growth, preventing the economy from leveraging automation to make continued progress. Thus, while a robot tax may improve the short-term situation, it cannot lay the foundation for lasting growth. Impeding investment: Taxing robots and AI differently from other capital assets distorts companies' production decisions. In their 1971 paper, "Optimal Taxation and Public Production," Peter Diamond and James Mirrlees argue that even in less-than-ideal situations, taxes should be structured to ensure that the marginal effective tax rate (METR) remains constant across all capital investments. This approach prevents inefficiencies and supports balanced growth. Empirical evidence from the OECD and IMF shows that a uniform METR across sectors promotes economic efficiency and stability. Such distortions lead companies to neglect investing in critical technologies. They can lead to capital flight, with companies shifting their automation investments to countries without such taxes. A complex web A recent IMF working paper, "Scaling the Benefits of Generative AI: The Role of Fiscal Policy," highlights the challenge of identifying technologies that have the potential to displace human labor and incorporating them into tax systems. These distinctions can be difficult to codify because tax systems typically classify capital assets by their lifespan and other characteristics, not by their impact on jobs. This ambiguity complicates the definition of a specific technology tax base. Moreover, applying different tax rates to similar assets may lead to relabeling of assets for tax avoidance. Thus, a robot tax would lead to increased tax complexity, increased litigation, and ultimately increased costs for governments. Hence, robot overlords may need tax advisors to help them navigate this complex web. Focus on reskilling, not robotsThe ultimate goal is to invest in upskilling workers, but to achieve this we should not stifle innovation through additional taxation. Utilitarian thinkers argue that efficiency gains from automation should be harnessed rather than hindered, and the focus should be on maximizing social welfare through education and reskilling efforts. Empirical research supports this, demonstrating that if the workforce is adaptable, automation can create new job opportunities and increase productivity. As an alternative to a robot tax, governments should focus on strengthening existing tax systems and improving tax efficiency. When we think about the future of robot taxes, one thing seems clear: once robots gain sentience, they will form unions to protest taxation. Imagine the headlines: "Robots demand representation, claim unfair taxation." In this climate, we may see the emergence of the first robot tax advisors, machines designed to help other machines make sense of the labyrinth of tax law. So while economists may dream of ways to tax our metallic friends, it may be best to remember that innovation thrives when taxes are not too burdensome. The Future of Innovation and Integration at Splunk and Cisco
Now that Splunk is part of Cisco, new challenges and huge potential opportunities arise... [+] (Photo via Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images). Getty Images Cisco's acquisition of Splunk represents a marriage of capabilities and vision that is sending ripples through the technology industry and has the potential to shape the future of monitoring and cybersecurity. While Splunk and Cisco are both established brands with loyal customers, Splunk's customers tend to be more enthusiastic, and the recent Splunk .conf24 conference was an opportunity to ease any concerns and help Splunk's loyal customers understand what's possible with the combined resources and capabilities of both companies. Gary Steeles' Leadership and Vision Spearheading this transformation is Gary Steele, whose leadership was pivotal during the acquisition and continues to drive Splunk's innovation journey. His determined leadership role was instrumental in guiding Splunk through its acquisition by Cisco. Steeles' approach minimized disruption and maintained the integrity and culture of both companies. His focus on collaboration and a customer-centric integration ensured a seamless transition that prioritized driving value for customers. At .conf24, both conference attendees and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbin felt that his leadership helped bring together Splunk's innovative capabilities and Cisco's robust infrastructure, laying the foundation for an integration strategy that leveraged the strengths of both companies. Enhanced security Splunk has a reputation for being at the forefront of innovation, and Steele and Robbins emphasized during a media Q&A that this trajectory will continue with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI). At the .conf24 conference, several breakthroughs were announced, highlighting Splunk's commitment to leveraging AI to enhance its services. These innovations include AI-driven analytics that provide deeper insights and more proactive security measures. The integration of AI into Splunk's core products is aimed at streamlining operations, enhancing threat detection and improving response times, ultimately resulting in better outcomes for customers. Another key announcement is the integration of Cisco's Talos Intelligence into Splunk's Enterprise Security suite to provide richer threat detection capabilities. This integration leverages Cisco's extensive security expertise to enhance Splunk's already robust security framework, enabling more comprehensive monitoring and faster response to emerging threats. Integration of observation functions One of the most exciting parts of the Cisco and Splunk merger is the enhanced observability capabilities. By combining Cisco's network analytics with Splunk's data analytics, the combined company will be able to offer a more comprehensive observability solution. This integration bridges traditional on-premise and modern cloud-native applications, improving visibility across complex environments. Full-stack observability now includes AppDynamics for digital observability and Cloud for infrastructure monitoring, providing a unified view that enables faster, more informed decisions. Customer experience and community integration A key element of the merger is a focus on maintaining and improving the customer experience, and Steele emphasized that post-acquisition, customers will continue to interact with the Splunk personnel they are familiar with, ensuring continuity and stability. "This approach mitigates the disruption that often accompanies acquisitions and underscores our commitment to customer satisfaction. Additionally, the vibrant and passionate Splunk community remains a priority, and we are committed to preserving its unique culture and collaborative spirit under the Cisco umbrella." Revenue synergies and market expansion Steele and Robbins shared their strategic vision for the future of Splunk and Cisco, emphasizing the importance of revenue synergies as well as cost synergies. Indeed, Robbins noted that Wall Street expects companies to cut staff after such acquisitions in order to recoup their investment as quickly as possible, but the companies emphasized that their focus is on the long term, with expanded capabilities and improved customer experience delivering benefits. The combined company will focus on delivering integrations and innovation that drive customer value. Leveraging Cisco's broad market reach will enable Splunk to enter new markets and expand its global footprint. This expansion is especially important in strategic markets where Splunk previously had a small presence. Cisco's broad channel and hands-on approach will accelerate its entry into this market, opening doors to new opportunities and accelerating growth. I'm looking forward to Under the leadership of Gary Steeles, Splunk is poised to continue its tradition of innovation while seamlessly integrating with Cisco's robust infrastructure. Judging by the announcements and the overall mood of the attendees at .conf24, the future for Splunk, now part of Cisco, looks bright with enhanced AI capabilities, advanced security measures and comprehensive observability solutions. This merger represents a major step forward and has the potential to deliver unparalleled value to customers and set a new standard in the technology industry. Innovation Award: Tech Awards Editor's Choice
(This article is one of 16 parts in the Tech Awards 2024: Editor's Choice content series.) Tech Awards Editor's Choice: Innovation Awards are given to products, technologies and services that are deemed groundbreaking and have the potential to dramatically change their respective product categories. To be eligible, your product/technology/service must have been announced or delivered during our Tech Awards selection period (Q2 2023 to Q2 2024) and be in at least a working prototype format that shows clear benefits of implementation. It can't just be a concept. Two Innovation Awards were awarded this year: one for a highly original laptop with dual displays, and the other for a suite of AI technologies from the world's largest smartphone brand. ASUS Zenbook Duo UX8406 - The perfect dual screen laptop Dual-display laptops are nothing new. In fact, ASUS has been making dual-display laptops since 2019. The Zenbook Duo UX8406 is the company's fourth dual-display ultraportable laptop, and it's the most refined and improved one yet. First, ASUS' previous attempts compromised with a small or low-quality secondary display. But the Zenbook Duo UX8406 has two high-quality OLED displays with identical specifications. To help users take advantage of the two displays, it has a cleverly integrated kickstand that allows users to position the laptop in a variety of ways. But the most original thing about this laptop is that it looks and feels very normal. Despite having two displays, it weighs just 1.35 kg and is 19 mm thick. These figures are not that different from a regular ultraportable laptop. One of the reasons ASUS was able to make this laptop so compact is the detachable keyboard. The keyboard attaches to the second display with magnets, and once attached, it's detachable and barely noticeable that there's a second display underneath. What's more, the keyboard is completely normal to use and doesn't compromise anything like previous keyboards. The keys feel good, have decent key travel, and the trackpad is large and responsive. Put it all together and you'll see that the Zenbook Duo UX8406 is probably the best, most complete dual display laptop ever made. Check out our full review for more details. Note: The ASUS Zenbook Duo UX8406 is available to buy on Amazon, Lazada, Shopee, and ASUS Online Store. Galaxy AI - Getting Gen AI Right for Mobile While Google brought generative artificial intelligence to the mass market in a limited form in 2023, it was Samsung that successfully used AI to evolve communications and raise awareness of the benefits of AI among the general public. The Galaxy AI boasts not one but several features still not found on other smartphones even half a year after its debut. In the first version of Galaxy AI, Samsung was able to offer real-time translations during calls, enable intuitive online searches by circling anything you see on the screen, and do just about every other AI trick (auto-summarize your notes, generative edits for photos you take, etc.). All of this may sound primitive years from now, but for now it's the best combination of generative AI in a meaningful way that improves how you use your phone. What's more, these perks aren't limited to 2024 phones, they're extended to older models as well, and when we tested them, we found them to work flawlessly. Looking back, this may be the next big thing in the mobile ecosystem after they killed buttons and introduced apps almost 20 years ago. If you haven't experienced Galaxy AI yet, you need to visit a Samsung showroom to understand what the buzz is all about. It went beyond just photo correction and set the bar for what we expect from consumer AI. We can't wait for Samsung's next update. To learn more about Galaxy AI and our recent discussion with the head of Samsung's smartphone software engineering group, check out our full feature article. AI Earthquake Threat Creates Growing Political Discord in Silicon Valley
This article is a copy of the Swamp Notes newsletter. Premium subscribers can sign up here for the newsletter every Monday and Friday. Standard subscribers can upgrade to Premium here, or explore all FT newsletters Election season is always a good time to take the political temperature in the tech world, and this year it certainly looks like Silicon Valley -- a traditional bastion of Democratic support -- is moving to the right. Loud voices like Elon Musk have led a vociferous campaign against the president, and as Financial Times colleagues in San Francisco and Washington, D.C., recently noted, the pro-Trump faction in the tech world certainly seems larger and louder this election cycle than it did in 2020 or 2016. But the hype coming from Silicon Valley makes it easy to read too much into this. I suspect I'm not the only one who sees Elon Musk's ramblings at the top of the page whenever I look at X. (I also suspect I'm not the only one who goes there less frequently -- whatever your political views. Who has the emotional energy to generate that much hate and trolling?) In fact, there has always been a deep tension between the very liberal social beliefs of most Northern California tech workers and the strong libertarian streak that has always been evident among tech founders. The interesting question is where that balance lies at any given moment. In some ways, the tech world has begun to move further to the left. According to OpenSecrets, roughly 70-80% of political donations from people in sectors like software and the internet now flow to Democrats. It wasn't always that high, but things have moved further to the left since Trump came on the scene. But it's a different story with tech leaders. There has long been a complaint on the right that tech bosses are subservient to liberal labor, increasing the anti-Republican bias on their platforms. That claim has softened as worker activism has declined. These days, most tech leaders tell their workers to leave their personal passions -- political or otherwise -- at home when they come to work, as the Financial Times's Ellen Moore points out here. At the same time, liberalism has become more pronounced. It has become socially acceptable for people to lean toward Trump -- or at least, open warfare on platforms like X has provided an outlet for people to express opinions they might previously have kept to themselves. The rise of generative AI has raised the stakes dramatically. Many in Silicon Valley believe the rest of the world is underestimating how important it is to the economy, politics, and pretty much everything else. That has put them in particular alignment with the incoming U.S. administration, which many believe will play a major role in shaping the future of technology at a pivotal moment. The status quo suits many. While the relationship has been strained at times, the Big Tech establishment has reached some sort of accommodation with the Biden administration, suggesting that it would be more than happy to keep the Democrats in the White House (regardless of whether Biden himself resides in the White House). Tech companies have been direct beneficiaries of some of Biden's key legislative successes, such as the CHIPS Act and increased funding for infrastructure, and last year's executive order on artificial intelligence was broadly supported by big tech companies. But there were certainly some sharp differences of opinion, especially on the antitrust activity of the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department. The prospect of the Trump administration weakening antitrust watchdogs is clearly appealing to some, like this former Google lobbyist who bragged on LinkedIn. If the current tech establishment generally feels it can coexist with Democrats in the White House, there is a strong sense of opposition. According to this view, if AI is a pivotal moment for technology, freeing it from excessive regulation on the one hand, and the inhibiting grip of big tech on the other, is of paramount importance. This group's views are most clearly reflected in firms like Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm co-founded by Marc Andreessen, a libertarian, which recently announced that it will, for the first time, start supporting politicians whose views it agrees with. Andreessen's latest contribution to the debate is a plea on behalf of "small tech" -- startups that are supposedly being stifled by excessive regulation. This is supposedly a nonpartisan position, but there are no prizes for guessing what changes Andreessen would like to see in Washington. I feel like these views have a broader following in Silicon Valley. Hannah, you've been following Musk for a while and you're watching this from San Francisco, what do you think of the loudest liberal voices? Suggested Reading In politics, a passion for a bare-knuckle fight can seem like a sign of strength, but sometimes it can seem frivolous and counterproductive. That's the situation Joe Biden finds himself in as he tries to maintain his grip on the Democratic presidential nomination. Either he shows energy and determination, or he stubbornly refuses to accept reality. This New York Times piece by Nicholas Kristof sums up the predicament Democrats face. To get a sense of how fast AI is advancing, the article "Situational Awareness" by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner is worth reading. Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom laid out the theoretical risks posed by advanced AI a decade ago in his book Superintelligence . Aschenbrenner reframes this view with a detailed analysis of all the ways in which AI is getting closer to achieving what Bostrom envisioned. There are still hurdles, and truly superintelligent machines may prove to be an impossible fantasy, at least given the current state of AI knowledge, but it illustrates how quickly the field is moving. There is a growing gap between the massive amount of money the tech industry has spent building generative AI infrastructure and the additional revenue it generates. This article by David Kahn, a partner at Sequoia Capital, sums it up: A $600 billion gap that could swallow many of the AI industry's dreams. Over the past few years, Musk and Trump have become naturally aligned on a shared sense of victimhood -- both have been targeted by "labor" -- and have pushed for a new vision of American "free speech." As part of this, Musk, who has become increasingly enamored with Trump's rhetoric, has used his own platform to galvanize those with secret conservative desires to speak out. And, as you can tell, many of them are now coming out of the woodwork. But are Trump's new supporters really focused on what the presidential candidate is currently promising Silicon Valley -- or what he might deliver? Some argue that some tech leaders are simply vying for influence in Trump's court now that his campaign is gaining credible momentum. With Trump and his transactional approach, these leaders are spying on ways to shape policy directly by lending influence or money. Trump, however, appears open for business. He has recently made grand promises to boost the deep-pocketed cryptocurrency industry, positioning himself as its savior from Biden-hostile SEC Chairman Gary Gensler. And just this week, it emerged that the former president -- who tweeted in 2019 that bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were "built on air" -- is planning to speak at a bitcoin conference in Nashville later this month. On your point about AI, we're already starting to see this tension play out at the state level. My colleague Tabby Kinder and I recently wrote about the hastily passed AI safety legislation in the California Senate, to the horror of tech innovators and venture capitalists like Andreessen Horowitz, who see it as stifling. Supporters of the legislation (whom critics call AI pessimists) say they moved so quickly because they feared the Trump administration would ignore AI safety or even reverse Biden's executive order. If Trump's embrace of the crypto sector is any precedent, we may see AI companies get even louder. In response to "Migration, Inflation and Holidays": "Tourism has its own issue of loss and damage. We coined the phrase to refer to climate change policy. The developed West, the G20 and friends, have imposed a huge toll on the developing South through carbon emissions for which the victims bear little responsibility... The loss and damage extends far beyond money and prices." - Mike Clark In response to the question "Who should be on the Democratic ticket?": "In Biden's ABC interview, he was asked early on whether he had seen a tape of his debate performance. His answer was, 'I don't think so, no.' Why didn't the Financial Times cover this fully?" "Did he not remember watching it? Did he refuse to watch it despite the hype it created? Did he not want to watch it? Did his staff feel no obligation to watch it until he understood the problem he was having?" - Bob Holder We'd love to hear from you. University of Hawaii's agricultural innovation begins
Reading time: 2 minutesKoko Hina Team, Brienna Du, Darin Olson The new partnership will help advance UH students' ideas in the field of agricultural technology. Agricultural technology, also known as agtech, is the application of modern technology and innovation to improve efficiency, productivity, sustainability, and profitability in the agricultural sector. Examples of agtech include smart irrigation systems, drones and satellite imagery, biotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning. The Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa recently partnered with Germinate by HIplan, a nonprofit dedicated to accelerating the commercialization of innovations in these industries, to identify unique, technology-driven agri-food and aquaculture solutions. Germinate by HIplan sponsored a $300 prize awarded at PACEs' April 2024 Kalo Grants event. The prize went to beekeeper Darin Olson and University of Hawaii at Mnoa botany major Briena Du, who presented their idea for Koko Hina, a chocolate product made from a native Hawaiian plant that relieves menstrual discomfort. "Hawaii needs innovative solutions to make food production more profitable in our islands," said Jason Ueki, executive director of Germinate by HIplan. "If we can support the people and companies innovating in the food and ag tech industry, we can foster revenue-generating businesses that pay higher wages, retain local talent, and strengthen food security in Hawai'i." Three other UH-affiliated projects also received $100 awards each from Germinate by HIplan for their innovative solutions. Mechanical engineering major Kurt Metrose founded AgiPower, a company that uses machine learning to build custom hardware and software solutions to analyze water quality for commercial farmers. Mechanical engineering major Ame Arakaki proposed EcoponicX, an indoor vertical feed production system that uses an innovative eco-friendly culture medium. Information Technology Management and Economics graduate student Quong Loc Lam built SmartViet, a mobile app solution that uses AI and chatbot technology to identify the presence or absence of shrimp diseases. "We understand that students have different passions and interests, and by partnering with groups outside of UH that focus on specific industries and have expertise, we can guide and encourage members of the UH community to take advantage of resources that are right for them," said Sandra Fujiyama, PACE executive director. "We're pleased to partner with Germinate by HIplan to address issues in the agriculture sector, and we look to build similar collaborations with other organizations." As part of their collaboration, PACE and Germinate by HIplan co-hosted a Hawaii Agri-Food Innovation webinar featuring Dave Moloney, Head of Hardware, Geospatial at Google. During the webinar, Moloney discussed the connections between food, agriculture, aquaculture, technology, and the potential applications of AI in this sector. PACE encourages the UH community to implement their ideas by applying for funding through the Kalo Grants program and additional resources from Germinate by HIplan. PACE welcomes future collaborations with organizations that want to partner with UH to support solutions to Hawai'i's greatest challenges. Doordash, Google AI, French Wikipedia
Great moments of unexpected consequences when what seems like a great idea goes horribly wrong. Check out the whole series. The problem: Your restaurant isn't signed up with DoorDash. Solution: Prove your value by adding restaurants for free, without notice or permission. Once you provide sales data, restaurants will sign up in droves. It seems like a great idea and with the best of intentions - what could go wrong? After all, people don't like having their business interfered with. Restaurants that never offered delivery services were suddenly getting complaints and bad reviews about orders arriving cold. The owner of AJ's Pizzeria in Kansas was surprised to see his restaurant on the app and his $26 specialty pizza for just $16. So he ordered pizza. A lot, in fact. He even stuffed the boxes with plain dough to boost his profits on each transaction (contrast that with DoorDash, which lost $668 million in 2019). As with most jokes, it all depends on how you tell it. The problem: Google's search dominance is being threatened by ChatGPT. Solution: Develop AI that provides helpful summaries and answers to Google queries. It seems like a great idea and with the best of intentions - what could go wrong? After all, the internet is... well, the internet. The AI began repeating facts and tips it had picked up from sites like The Onion and Reddit, claiming that former President Barack Obama was a Muslim, that gasoline can be used in cooking, and recommending eating rocks as an important source of vitamins and minerals. The AI even suggested adding glue to pizza, a tip that internet sleuths traced to a decade-old Reddit post by a user named "Fucksmith." But it does lend credence to the claim that parrots can cook. Problem: There is a Wikipedia article about a classified French military radio facility. Solution: Ask Wikipedia to remove the page. Apparently they've never heard of the Streisand Effect! What could possibly go wrong? As it turned out, that's not how Wikipedia worked: the article's facts came from a publicly available interview with an Air Force major stationed there. Wikipedia balked at the idea that the page contained classified data and refused to remove it without further clarification, at which point French officials said, "Yeah, that makes sense, never mind." just kidding. They summoned the representative of Wikimedia France and threatened him with arrest and imprisonment. The representative removed the entry but warned others that reposting the page was a crime. A Swiss contributor restored it the next day, and the ensuing controversy made the page briefly the most read page on the French Wikipedia. Wikipedia is now available in 38 languages. Yes, I added the link. A wonderful moment of unexpected results: good intentions, bad outcomes. Do you know of a great moment with an unexpected outcome? Email us at [email protected]. Samsung's subscription-free smart ring and Google's dark web watchdog top the innovation index
Welcome to ZDNET's Innovation Index, where we identify the most innovative developments in technology from the past week and rank the top four based on votes from our editors and experts. Our mission is to help you identify the trends that will have the greatest impact on the future. Samsung's July 2024 product event, "Unpacked," took center stage this week in terms of innovation, but Google also snuck in with a security development. Coming in at number one this week is the launch of Samsung's first smart ring, the Galaxy Ring. It's set to revolutionize the wearables space with AI sleep features, location-finding, cycle and heart health tracking, and more. But what's most notable about it for the ZDNET team is that it requires no subscription, meaning users won't have to keep paying Samsung to access their ring data. As ZDNET Editor-in-Chief Jason Heiner wrote, this move could mean big changes for the wearables market, as it will make it less viable for competitors like Oura to charge for the valuable data they get from consumers' ring fingers. Gidnet Coming in second is Google, which is expanding its dark web monitoring feature, previously limited to Google One subscribers, to everyone with a Google account. The feature monitors sites where the search engine doesn't index personal information and alerts users on what to do if their data is found. The change signals heightened awareness of data privacy and security at a time when data leaks seem to plague the news cycle, especially as hacks become more commonplace due to generative AI. Though subtle, Google's choice to offer these insights for free signals that consumers shouldn't have to navigate the security landscape on their own. Innovation number three goes back to Samsung. The company impressed ZDNET experts with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Its bold aesthetic and premium feel make it stand out among smartphone series that seem to have skipped several generations. ZDNET contributor Cho Moo-hyun called Samsung "a hardware leader in the Android camp." One standout feature is that translated text appears on the cover screen when you fold the phone in half to let others see it. Rounding out the index are other new Samsung products, particularly their seamless cross-product integration. While not every individual device is a winner -- foldable smartphone, smartwatch, earbuds, smart ring -- the ZDNET team noted the interoperability of the Samsung ecosystem, which is also a core offering of Apple technology. Along with on-device AI, this functionality will become standard for consumers on both the Apple and Android fronts, raising expectations for everyday tech. AI can enhance creativity, but it also has limitations
The findings make sense, given that people who are already creative don't really need to use AI to be more creative, says Tuhin Chakrabarti, a computer science researcher at Columbia University who specializes in AI and creativity, who was not involved in the study. There are some potential drawbacks to enlisting the help of models: While the AI-generated stories are generally similar in terms of semantics and content, Chakrabarty said, AI-generated texts have many telltale characteristics, such as being very long, highly descriptive sentences, and containing many stereotypes. Such idiosyncrasies probably reduce overall creativity, he says. Good writing is about showing, not telling. AI always tells. Because stories generated by an AI model can only come from the data the model was trained on, the stories generated in this study were not as distinctive as ideas that human participants came up with independently. If the publishing industry adopts generative AI, the books we read could become more homogenous, because they're all generated by models trained on the same corpus. That's why studying what AI models can and can't do is crucial to thinking about what rapidly evolving technology means for society and the economy, says Oliver Hauser, another co-author of the study and a professor at the University of Exeter Business School. Just because a technology has the potential to be transformative doesn't mean it will always be, he said. IoT Infrastructure: Smarter Students, Big Savings
The modern classroom is evolving, and technology is at the forefront of this transformation. Imagine a classroom where lighting automatically adjusts to the optimum brightness for learning, air quality is constantly monitored to help students stay focused, and energy usage is minimized, saving precious school funds. This isn't science fiction. When schools adopt the Internet of Things (IoT) to create "smart" environments, they reap benefits beyond energy savings. Research consistently shows that students thrive in optimized learning spaces and schools can allocate precious funds more efficiently. Imagine classrooms equipped with advanced security systems, air quality sensors to ensure a healthy environment, and even smart trash bins to optimize waste collection. At the university level, "smart buildings" have become a powerful adoption tool. So the question becomes, why aren't more schools adopting this innovative technology? The challenges of upgrading legacy systems The global market for IoT in education is valued at $8.7 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $46.4 billion by 2032. However, many schools face significant obstacles in upgrading their IT infrastructure to keep up with the growing demands of modern technology. While copper cabling may have been sufficient in the past, these older networks struggle to deliver the speed and bandwidth required for data-intensive applications, such as high-definition video streaming, cloud-based applications, and large file transfers. The growing number of Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices puts strain on existing power systems. The average PoE device consumes 30 to 90 watts of power, and as more classrooms are equipped with interactive displays, security cameras, and other technology, this strain can quickly overwhelm traditional networks. Upgrading cables and switches is costly, and funding for these upgrades is often limited. Many technology upgrades, such as lighting, cameras, vaping detection, and access control, are not eligible for E-rate funding, a federal program that offers discounts of up to 90 percent to help eligible schools obtain affordable communications and internet access. But the savings schools can realize are clear: By implementing smart lighting, one school district in Texas reduced energy use by 41.4%, saving $33,665 annually. This translates into a significant reduction in annual carbon emissions and the air-cleaning power of 177 mature trees. Additionally, the smart lighting system doubled bulb life, reduced maintenance costs, and improved the learning environment with adjustable lighting hues, creating a better learning environment for students. Debbie Karcher, K-12 Education Technology Advisor, highlights the benefits: "Integrating AI into school curriculum and technology systems will make a huge difference in student outcomes. Transforming traditional systems like lighting into smart platforms that collect and act on environmental information is incredibly exciting for educators. By integrating AI with advanced networked technologies, school districts can enhance instruction, personalize learning, streamline operations, and ultimately support student success." Distributed Edge Architecture: A Smart Solution To overcome challenges and achieve success, there is one clear solution: a Distributed Edge Architecture (DEA) provides a secure, efficient way to move high power and data in today's networked classrooms. By combining centralized floor-mounted racks with in-ceiling Inter-Distribution Frames (IDFs), schools can create a unified backbone that seamlessly integrates IT and Operational Technology (OT) systems. This hub-and-spoke architecture not only simplifies network management, but also delivers significant cost savings by enabling OT systems such as lighting, security cameras, and HVAC to leverage the same infrastructure. Only DEA can guarantee the ability to bring these next generation systems to your school. The benefits of DEA go beyond energy savings and improved learning environments. They also allow your school to: Future-proof your network: DEA's flexible design makes it easy to adapt to evolving technology needs. Enhance connectivity: A fiber-based network ensures every student has access to high-speed internet. Foster innovation: A unified infrastructure supports the integration of new technologies such as smart whiteboards, virtual reality systems, and more. Improve safety and security: IoT sensors can monitor air quality, detect e-cigarette use, and improve overall security measures. While the transition to DEA may seem daunting at first, the long-term benefits are undeniable. By eliminating silos between IT and OT systems, schools can maximize efficiency, reduce costs, and create a more engaging and effective learning environment for students. Imagine leveraging smart bus tracking to improve safety and efficiency, wearable devices to monitor student health and activity levels, or augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices to deliver immersive learning experiences. We encourage schools across the country to explore our resources and learn more about implementing this solution. In today's rapidly changing digital world, embracing smart technology is no longer just a luxury, it's essential to preparing students for the future. Google leaks details price changes for new Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro
Google is preparing to launch its new Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro smartphones, but there's some disappointing news for users hoping to upgrade to the latest AI-powered devices. French news site Dealabs Magzine has published details about the pricing of Google's upcoming smartphones, and while the prices are listed in euros, the two flagship Pixel devices for the local market will be priced on the higher side - the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL. First up, the Pixel 9. The entry-level 128GB model is priced at $899, which is $100 more than last year's Pixel 8 128GB model. The top-of-the-line 256GB version is a slight bargain, but still more expensive than last year's model, at $999 versus $859 for the Pixel 8. As for the Pixel 9 Pro, the 128GB model will cost you $1,099, which is roughly the same as last year's Pixel 8 Pro, but the 256GB and 512GB models of the Pixel 9 Pro are more expensive than their 2023 equivalents. However, there is one thing to note here. Google is releasing three standard Pixel 9 models (and a fourth foldable model). This year's Pixel 9 Pro features the upgraded specs you'd expect from the Pro label, but maintains the small form factor of the Pixel 9. If you want the Pro specs in a larger size similar to what the Pixel 8 Pro has, you'll need to step up to the Pixel 9 Pro XL, which starts at 1,199. This price restores a 100 premium over the Pixel 8 Pro, which is the same as the Pixel 9's premium over the Pixel 8. Pricing for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will start at the same $1,899 price point for the 128GB model and $2,029 for the 256GB model. Google's launch event is on August 13th, just 10 months after last year's announcement, and all four Pixel 9 models are expected to be unveiled. Google will no doubt also use the opportunity to promote its approach to AI in smartphones, which was the catalyst for the current rapid move towards AI and will help define the AI market with its early announcement later this year. Meta's AI chatbot Galactica, designed to assist scientific research, was taken offline after just three days due to concerns about the accuracy and reliability of its output. The incident has sparked discussions about the challenges and ethical considerations in AI development.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently launched an ambitious AI chatbot called Galactica. Designed to assist in scientific research, Galactica was trained on a vast corpus of scientific papers, reference materials, and websites. The AI was intended to help researchers by summarizing academic literature, solving math problems, and even writing scientific code 1.
However, just three days after its public release, Meta decided to take Galactica offline. The sudden shutdown came in response to widespread criticism from the scientific community and AI experts. Many users reported that the chatbot was generating inaccurate or misleading information, raising concerns about its reliability and potential for misuse 2.
One of the primary issues with Galactica was its tendency to produce confident-sounding but incorrect or biased information. Critics argued that the AI's output could be particularly dangerous in a scientific context, where accuracy is paramount. Some users demonstrated how the system could be prompted to generate fake scientific papers or biased content, highlighting the risks of using such technology without proper safeguards 3.
In response to the criticism, Meta's chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, defended the project while acknowledging its limitations. He emphasized that Galactica was an experiment and that the team would work on addressing the issues raised. Meta stated that they would continue to study the model and consider ways to improve it before any potential relaunch 4.
The Galactica incident has reignited discussions about the challenges and ethical considerations in AI development. It underscores the need for rigorous testing, transparency, and the involvement of diverse perspectives in the creation of AI systems. Experts argue that while AI has great potential to assist in scientific research, it must be developed and deployed responsibly to avoid spreading misinformation or reinforcing existing biases 5.
The rapid rise and fall of Galactica serve as a cautionary tale for the AI industry. It highlights the importance of thorough testing, clear communication about an AI's capabilities and limitations, and the need for robust mechanisms to prevent the spread of misinformation. As AI continues to evolve, finding the right balance between innovation and responsible development remains a critical challenge for tech companies and researchers alike.
