NetApp and Google Cloud Enhance Cloud Storage Capabilities

NetApp, the intelligent data infrastructure company, and Google Cloud have announced significant enhancements to their Google Cloud NetApp Volumes service. This collaboration aims to simplify the scaling of high-performance workloads and improve data management across hybrid cloud environments 12.

Integration with Google Cloud's Vertex AI Platform

A key feature of this partnership is the upcoming integration with Google Cloud's Vertex AI Platform. This integration will allow customers to directly use their data stored in NetApp Volumes within the Vertex AI platform. By leveraging Vertex AI's capabilities, users can build custom agents without the need to develop their own solutions for managing data pipelines in retrieval augmented generation (RAG) applications 1.

Performance Improvements for Large Capacity Volumes

The partnership introduces substantial improvements for Premium and Extreme Service Levels of Google Cloud NetApp Volumes. These enhancements are now generally available in all 14 regions where these service levels are offered. Customers can now provision a single volume starting at 15TiB, scalable up to 1PiB, with throughput reaching up to 30 GiB/s. This advancement enables the movement of petabyte-scale datasets for large workloads such as electronic design automation (EDA), AI applications, and content data repositories without the need to partition data across multiple volumes 1.

Flex Service Level Enhancements

A preview of independent scaling of capacity and performance is now available for the NetApp Volumes Flex service level. This feature allows users to create storage pools by individually selecting capacity, throughput, and IOPS. Customers can scale throughput up to 5 GiB/s and IOPS up to 160K, enabling them to right-size their storage and optimize costs 1.

Support for Google Cloud Assured Workloads

NetApp Volumes will soon support the Assured Workloads framework, which Google Cloud customers use to configure and maintain controlled environments that comply with specific compliance regimes. This support will ensure that customers using NetApp Volumes under Assured Workloads meet data residency, transparent access control, and cloud key management solution compliance requirements specific to their region 1.

Empowering AI-Driven Innovation

The collaboration between NetApp and Google Cloud is positioned to accelerate generative AI by integrating the latest AI innovations with NetApp ONTAP's robust data management capabilities. This integration aims to break down silos and enable seamless, real-time integration across hybrid-cloud environments, turning raw data into actionable insights 2.

Pravjit Tiwana, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Storage at NetApp, emphasized that "For many organizations, the cloud is the fastest and simplest path to using AI to uncover data-driven insights." He added that the new capabilities of NetApp Volumes help customers scale their cloud storage to meet the demands of modern, high-performance applications and datasets 2.

Industry Impact

The enhancements to Google Cloud NetApp Volumes are already making an impact in the industry. Stan Rock, Principal Technology Architect at OpenText, stated, "The global availability of Google Cloud NetApp Volumes service levels and the broad range of capacity and performance provisioning options have helped us operate more efficiently and respond with agility to our changing business needs" 2.

As businesses navigate the era of intelligence, these new capabilities in cloud storage and AI integration are set to play a crucial role in driving greater agility and innovation at scale across various industries.
