And it appears that PC manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Asus are lining up to adopt this product. Taiwan-based chip manufacturer MediaTek and Nvidia are reportedly working together to create an AI chip for PCs, according to a post by a leaker called Mobile Chip Expert on the Chinese social media site Weibo that was spotted by IT Home. The 3nm CPU is apparently ready for tape-out this month, and is expected to be mass-produced in the second half of next year. Customers planning to adopt the chip include Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Asus. If true, this level of interest from industry leaders suggests that the MediaTek-Nvidia product could have a significant impact on the market, similar to the adoption seen with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite. This is not the first time this rumor has emerged in the press. Earlier this year, the Taiwanese publication Economic Daily reported that MediaTek might partner with Nvidia to develop an AI PC processor based on Arm architecture, and that the new chip may cost as much as $300. The new chip is expected to be manufactured using TSMC's advanced 3nm process technology. Namely, the lack of graphical strength, which has been a key concern in the performance of Snapdragon X-powered computers. MediaTek and Nvidia have collaborated on other projects, which lends credence to the rumors that they are partnering on this chip. Their Dimensity Auto Cockpit platform is an SoC designed for automotive applications that leverages Nvidia's graphics IP and Drive OS. The chip supports advanced infotainment systems, including high-end gaming capabilities with ray tracing technology, as well as safety features such as multiple high dynamic range cameras. However, so far no US auto manufacturer has announced it has integrated this platform into a vehicle.

The chip has also been linked to a rumored $300 price tag. Today's report curiously only refers to the rumored chip as an "AI PC" CPU, surprising as both previous leaks about the collaboration and MediaTek's stable of products would point to a mobile chip or SoC being more likely. MediaTek specializes in mobile products and typically employs AMD as a hardware partner. One of the most prominent problems reviewers had with the performance of Snapdragon X-powered computers was their lack of graphical strength, which Nvidia can quickly solve. Nvidia's name recognition alone will do much to boost the MediaTek chip, whether it is Nvidia's return to mobile graphics or a different venture into laptop-form-factor AI PCs. MediaTek and Nvidia's only officially announced collaboration is the Dimensity Auto Cockpit platform, an SoC for cars that license Nvidia's graphics IP and Nvidia Drive OS. The chip seeks to be a front-runner in automotive chips by offering full support for infotainment platforms, including AAA gaming with RTX graphics and safety features such as HDR multi-camera support. So far, no US-based cars seem to have adopted the platform.

The leaker teases that the new Arm-based AI PC processor has already reached the tape-out stages. NVIDIA has been pushing more and more into the custom chip business, with the AI PC market a gigantic market that it wants to step into and dominate, just like it has utterlry dominated the AI GPU business with its Hopper and now Blackwell AI GPU architectures. Arm-based AI PC processors are limited to Qualcomm and its new Snapdragon X platform, which for most users absolutely sucks, and so does Windows on Arm for that matter. But, it's getting better and better... and with more hardware players joining the fray -- NVIDIA and MediaTek in this case -- hopefully we see things continue to improve. NVIDIA has also previously said that RTX is the "Premium" AI PC platform, and that CPUs and SoCs launching with new NPUs (Neural Processing Units for AI worklaods) are for "Basic" AI PCs. The company is right, as a decent discrete GeForce RTX GPU can blow away any NPU inside of any CPU now, and for years to come. The new silicon will support advanced technologies, and will be mass-produced on TSMC's new 3nm process node, and will compete against Apple's new M4 chip, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X processors.
