ChatGPT Plus Subscribers Get Unlimited Sora Access for the Holidays

CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that OpenAI will give all ChatGPT Plus subscribers unlimited Sora access over the holidays. The ChatGPT maker announced daily surprises during its 12 days of OpenAI event. The AI image tool is available through Sora.com with an OpenAI account and a ChatGPT subscription. Sora is not available to free ChatGPT users (non-subscribers can only check out videos others have generated with Sora) and remains restricted to ChatGPT subscribers in the United States. Taking to X, the OpenAI CEO, announced that Sora will be completely free for all ChatGPT Plus users over the holidays, giving unlimited access to the brand-new AI video generator. Sora was just made available to the public last week, and it's already proving to be a huge success, thanks to its ease of use and quick ability to turn any prompt into video. Altman announced the bonus gift claiming "Our GPUs get a little less busy during late December as people take a break from work," in other words, have some fun with AI and Sora this December, and make AI-generated videos of puppies. The announcement follows the major finale to 12 days of OpenAI, where the company behind ChatGPT announced its new o3 and o3-mini reasoning models, which outperform existing models and are expected to launch in the next few months. To get early access to o3 when it becomes available as well as take advantage of unlimited Sora access over the next week or so, you'll need ChatGPT Plus. ChatGPT Plus costs $20/£16/AU$30 a month and comes with many other benefits including faster response times and all the latest models from OpenAI. This is only for the "relaxed queue", so video generations will take a little longer but its a chance to see just what the AI video generator can really achieve. Normally, subscribers of the $20 per month plan get 50 video generations per month with no mechanism for increasing that other than paying $200 per month for the ChatGPT Pro plan -- which most users don't need. CEO Sam Altman wrote on X: "Our GPUs get a little less busy during late December as people take a break from work, so we are giving all plus users unlimited Sora access via the relaxed queue over the holidays!" Other limits on the Plus plan still apply including video resolution being limited to 480p if the clip is 10 seconds long, or 720p for a 5-second video. Plus subscribers also can't use Sora to animate images of people, real or AI-generated. Sora was finally revealed on Day 3 of the 12 Days of OpenAI event after almost a year of teasing from the AI lab. It was first announced early in 2024 and at the time was better than any other AI video tool available. While others have caught up, Sora still offers some impressive features, not least of which is the rapid generations. Even in the relaxed queue I found videos would be produced in under a minute. It isn't clear how long the unlimited generations promotion will last, but I suspect it will be gone by early January. So, if you don't want to spend $200 per month to get unlimited access to Sora -- now is your chance to put it to the test. OpenAI says it is working on dedicated Sora pricing plans and will release details in the New Year. This could include an unlimited Sora subscription unbundled from ChatGPT. The reason Pro is so expensive is because of the o1-Pro model and increase compute power behind the other advanced models. If you want to keep making AI video after the Sora promotion ends, Runway is $95 per month for unlimited usage or you can get unlimited basic generations from Haiper for $10 per month (but that includes a watermark and no commercial use).

Users with a standard $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus account were previously limited to generating videos up to 20 seconds long and were capped at 50 per month at a lower resolution (480p), or "fewer" than 50 videos at a higher resolution (720p). Otherwise, users needed to put down $200 for a Pro subscription. The news of this excess server capacity comes after Sora got off to a rocky start performance-wise. OpenAI's systems failed to handle the "unexpected demand" for Sora following its debut and temporarily disabled the ability for new users to sign up, meaning many ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers did not get access at launch. Sora has seen plenty of controversy within its relatively short history, in November, a group of artists leaked OpenAI's Sora video generator online. The group, who called themselves "PR-Puppets", alleged that OpenAI was luring artists into "art washing" and "unpaid beta testing", to falsely portray Sora as "a useful tool for artists." Though OpenAI's text-to-video tool hit the market first, we could be seeing more comparable tools from the rest of the tech giants by the next holiday season.
