ChatGPT just got a bump to its coding powers
For its penultimate 12 Days of OpenAI announcement, the company revealed a trio of updates to ChatGPT's app integration on Thursday, which should make using the AI in conjunction with other programs on your desktop less of a chore. OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT's ability to collaborate with select developer-focused macOS apps, specifically VS Code, Xcode, TextEdit, Terminal, and iTerm2, back in November. Rather than needing to copy and paste code into ChatGPT, this feature allows the chatbot to pull specified content from the coding app as you enter your text prompt. ChatGPT, however, cannot generate code directly into the app, as Cursor or GitHub Copilot are able to. Recommended Videos On Thursday, the company announced that its chatbot will now be able to read data from many more coding programs and IDEs. Those include BBEdit, MatLab, Nova, Script Editor, and TextMate; Jetbrains IDEs like Android Studio, AppCode, CLion, DataGrip, GoLand, IntelliJ IDEA, PHPStorm, PyCharm, RubyMine, RustRover, and WebStorm; as well as VS Code forks like VSCode Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, and WindSurf. ChatGPT will also now integrate with the Prompt and Warp terminal apps. What's more, ChatGPT's interoperability is no longer limited to coding. It can now work with Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip for more conventional text generation and editing tasks. OpenAI also announced that it is incorporating its Advanced Voice Mode feature into the desktop app workflow. Users will be able to launch AVM in a separate window to answer questions and provide suggestions as they work. In Thursday's demo, the OpenAI team asked AVM's Santa character for help in crafting the ideal holiday song playlist. Every paid tier subscriber (that's Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu) now has access to the expanded feature. To try it for yourself, you will need to manually select the app you want ChatGPT to interface with using a drop-down menu on the AI's desktop UI.

OpenAI Sets the Stage for Agentic AI with ChatGPT Desktop Apps for Mac and Windows
OpenAI is setting the stage for an agentic AI future, making ChatGPT more capable and seamlessly integrated into users' daily workflow. On the 11th day of '12 Days of OpenAI, ' the company showcased advancements in ChatGPT's desktop capabilities, highlighting the evolution of ChatGPT from a conversational assistant to an agentic tool -- ready to take on tasks and collaborate seamlessly across your desktop environment. Today, the company announced support for apps like Apple Notes, Notion, Warp, Xcode, and 30 more. In a demo, OpenAI also demonstrated how ChatGPT can work with the Notion app, fetch content within a selected section of the document, and generate additional, relevant content. The demo showed how ChatGPT helped analyse Git comments in Warp. The results were visualised in a holiday-themed bar graph. In another demo, ChatGPT worked with macOS accessibility APIs in Xcode. Moreover, OpenAI announced the integration of Advance Voice Mode with this feature. This lets ChatGPT work with apps based on your voice-based commands. This new development comes in the backdrop of OpenAI releasing the ChatGPT desktop version in November this year, marketing its first step into computer vision and agentic control. But, the demo didn't compete with another AGI easter egg. In one of the presentation screens, AIM was able to spot a directory in an Xcode project titled "AGI_Interface.swift". This isn't the first time in the last twelve days, and OpenAI dropped another notable easter egg a few days ago, a calendar event titled 'Super Secret AGI'. This further adds to the expectations that all the announcements of the 12 days could cumulatively give users a sense of general intelligence. OpenAI also mentioned that a Windows app for ChatGPT will be released soon. However, a bigger revelation is the confirmation of a new agent, who is said to be released in 2025. "As our models get increasingly powerful, ChatGPT will become more and more agentic," said OpenAI, and they also added that they will have more to say on it in 2025. A few weeks ago, reports surfaced that OpenAI is working on a new AI agent titled 'Operator" - but all the company did in today's event was just to confirm the plans. Perhaps, OpenAI caved into the heat that it is facing from competitors. Google recently announced Project Mariner, which can navigate and take action on a web browser tab on your behalf. Similarly, Microsoft announced the Copilot Vision, which can see content on your web browser and provide relevant information. And, of course, there's Anthropic's Computer Use, released well before any other tool. That said, there is just one day remaining in 12 Days of OpenAI, and it looks like they're saving the best for the last -- which is a new and powerful frontier model. It will be interesting to see what OpenAI has in store or how different the model is going to be from o1. A few benchmarks have been suggesting that o1 is the most powerful AI model yet and even outperforms the Claude 3.5 Sonnet in coding tasks. A few days ago, a user on X spotted the GPT-4.5 model with a limited preview capability. That said, today's event follows the nature of developer-centric announcements from two days ago. On the ninth day, OpenAI launched the o1 model in the API and upgraded it with function calls, structured outputs, reasoning effort controls, developer messages, and vision inputs. While OpenAI unveiled other features like Projects, WhatsApp integration, and ChatGPT for Apple Intelligence, the highlights remain the launch of o1 Pro and Sora. However, Google was quick to respond with Veo 2, and the company's testing revealed that it outperforms competitors like Kling, Moviegen - and, of course, Sora. The buch doesn't end there. Just a few hours before today's event, the tech giant unveiled an advanced reasoning model, Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking. The 'shipmas' battle is getting quite heated up, and for OpenAI, it all depends on what they're going to release on the last day of '12 Days of OpenAI' and the final day tomorrow.

OpenAI o1 API Access, WebRTC, Go, Java and more on 12 Days of OpenAI Day 9
Day 9 of OpenAI's "12 Days of OpenAI" has brought developers and ChatGPT users a range of updates designed to enhance the developer experience and expand the functionality of OpenAI's API. These announcements focus on improving model performance, allowing real-time interactions, and offering greater customization options. The updates reflect OpenAI's ongoing commitment to providing developers with tools that are both powerful and accessible. OpenAI has announced that the latest o1 model is now available via the API and has moved out of its preview status, along with other real-time API enhancements and fine-tuning methods that align AI with user preferences. OpenAI has also announced reductions in costs for its GPT-4o API calls and the new o1 model compared to the preview version. Watch the video below to learn more about all the announcements made by OpenAI on the ninth day of its 12 days of new releases and updates to ChatGPT. The centerpiece of Day 9 is the release of GPT-4 01, a next-generation language model now available for production use. Building on the strengths of its predecessors, GPT-4 01 introduces several enhancements that make it a versatile tool for developers across industries. Its standout features include: In addition to these features, GPT-4 01 is faster and more cost-efficient, using 60% fewer "thinking tokens" compared to earlier versions. This improvement not only reduces operational costs but also enhances scalability, making it an ideal choice for developers building robust and efficient applications. OpenAI has introduced significant updates to its real-time API capabilities, including the integration of WebRTC. This technology simplifies the development of real-time voice applications by reducing the complexity of code compared to traditional WebSocket implementations. WebRTC is optimized for low-latency communication, making it particularly effective for applications such as voice-enabled devices, virtual assistants, and live interaction platforms. Cost reductions further enhance the appeal of these updates. GPT-4 audio tokens are now 60% cheaper, while GPT-4 Mini audio tokens have seen a tenfold cost reduction. These changes make real-time applications more accessible to developers working within budget constraints. Additionally, a new Python SDK has been introduced to streamline the integration process, allowing developers to implement these features with greater efficiency and less overhead. Gain further expertise in ChatGPT by checking out these recommendations. To help developers create applications that better align with user needs, OpenAI has introduced a fine-tuning method called Direct Preference Optimization. This approach allows you to train models based on user-preferred responses, allowing applications to deliver outputs that are more relevant and contextually appropriate. This method is particularly valuable in areas such as customer support, content moderation, and creative writing, where user satisfaction is paramount. Early results have shown significant improvements in aligning model outputs with user expectations. Currently available for GPT-4, this fine-tuning method will soon extend to GPT-4 Mini, broadening its applicability. By using Direct Preference Optimization, you can build applications that are not only more accurate but also more closely aligned with the preferences and needs of your users. OpenAI has expanded its SDK offerings to include official support for Go and Java, two widely used programming languages. These SDKs provide full access to OpenAI API endpoints, simplifying the integration process for developers working in these environments. The addition of these SDKs underscores OpenAI's commitment to making its tools accessible to a broader range of developers. The login and API key generation process has also been streamlined, reducing barriers to entry and allowing faster onboarding for new users. To further support the developer community, OpenAI has made recordings of past Dev Day events available on YouTube. Day 6 of OpenAI's 12 Days event -- all the big news as it happens
We're now halfway through OpenAI's 12 Days extravaganza. Every weekday until December 20 the AI lab is making at least one product, service or feature announcement. It is safe to say it has been a mixed bag so far. There are likely still surprises in store and we've yet to see any updates to the GPT family of models, Advanced Voice or image creation in ChatGPT. Given Google's Gemini 2 announcement, ushering in the "agent era" and a new version of its flagship model capable of matching OpenAI's o1 for reasoning and GPT-4o for multimodal capabilities -- the pressure is on. In CEO Sam Altman's own words, the company will "have a livestream with a launch or demo, some big ones and some stocking stuffers." As yesterday was just an update on ChatGPT coming to Apple Intelligence, I'm hoping for something big. Most rumors point to either an update to ChatGPT itself or the launch of Advanced Voice with Vision. This is similar to Google's Project Astra and adds webcam access to the Advanced Voice assistant. Until yesterday I thought we had a pattern going with OpenAI's announcements where every other day was a 'small' announcement -- or "stocking stuffer" as Sam Altman puts it. A day where it's interesting but not for everyone. The first day was big with o1, while the second was small with fine-tuning. We then had Sora on day three and a ChatGPT Canvas update on day four. This should have pointed to a relatively big update on day 5, especially given Altman's presence. For some people, the news ChatGPT is coming to Apple Intelligence is huge, but it was first announced in June at WWDC and has been in developer beta for weeks at this point. There wasn't much shown in the 12 minute live stream we didn't already know. Assuming that yesterday was a blip because Apple launched iOS 18.2, all but requiring an OpenAI livestream on the topic, we may be getting something bigger today and my radar is pointing towards vision coming to Advanced Voice. This is something first teased during the Spring Update and would allow OpenAI's flagship voice assistant to also see you or what you're looking at through your phone's camera (or in the future, you laptop's webcam). If it isn't Advanced Voice with Vision there are a multitude of other ideas floating around on social media including GPT-4.5, native image generation for GPT-4o (which Altman hinted at yesterday) or even related to AI agents.
