PS5 Pro to get upgraded PSSR for better graphics and performance -- here's the game you'll see it in first
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is getting an upgrade. As described on the PlayStation Blog, Sony will begin rolling out an upgraded version of the AI upscaling tech on the PS5 Pro to boost the resolution and performance of over 50 titles that support it. While this rollout will happen in the coming weeks, there's already a title taking advantage of the new PSSR. That game is Resident Evil Requiem, which I recently reviewed. The blog post says this latest entry in the long-running survival horror franchise is the first title to use the more advanced PSSR. I didn't know that when I was reviewing the game, but it makes sense given how great it looked and performed throughout. If this is what PS5 Pro users can expect from games, then they're in for a treat. "With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of RE Engine to deepen the player's immersion in horror," said Masaru Ijuin from Capcom in the blog post. "For example, each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon, allowing it to move realistically in response to body motion and wind. The way light passes through his hair changes depending on how the strands of hair are overlapped as well." Ijuin also said that the upgraded PSSR enabled the game to have more expressive characters, which might have been more difficult without it. I can vouch for this, as I always marveled whenever I walked up to a glass surface and saw protagonist Grace's subtle (and horrified) expressions in her reflection. The upgraded PSSR stems from Sony's Project Amethyst partnership with AMD. The blog post says that PC gamers with the best gaming PCs packing an AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series GPU are already benefiting from this collaboration via Team Red's FSR 4 upscaling tech. "With the updated PSSR, we're delivering the very latest of this co-developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players," says the blog post. Expect a PS5 system software update sometime in March to enable the updated PSSR for all the titles that will support it. To do that, select "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" in Settings on PS5 Pro. I'm sure I speak for all PS5 Pro owners when I say I can't wait to see how games look and run after the update. I'll likely do a follow-up story on this after testing some titles, so stay tuned! Sony confirms Resident Evil Requiem is the first game to use the PS5 Pro's updated PSSR upscaler tech -- 'The upgraded PSSR has allowed us to elevate our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and textural particularities', says Capcom
* Sony has confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem is the first game to use the PS5 Pro's updated PSSR tech * The update will be "rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks" * Multiple existing PS5 Pro games will be upgraded with the improved PSSR in March Resident Evil Requiem officially launched today, and Sony has confirmed that it's the first game that uses its brand new PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) AI upscaling tech on PS5 Pro. PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed in July 2025 that Sony was working on a major update for PSSR that will significantly improve the performance of PS5 Pro games. At the time, Cerny said the update would arrive in 2026, but he has now confirmed in a new PlayStation Blog post that not only is it now available for Resident Evil Requiem, but it will be "rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks." "We've been hard at work on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm," Cerny said. "We are happy to share that Resident Evil Requiem - shipping today - is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which is helping to keep both frame rate and image quality high." If you're unfamiliar, PSSR is an AI library that essentially analyzes the images in a game pixel by pixel and upscales them, improving image resolution and performance. Cerny also said that the algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR stems from Sony's Project Amethyst partnership with AMD, which it announced in 2024. "Through AMD's FSR 4 upscaling technology, PC gamers have already seen the benefits of our collaboration," he said. "With the updated PSSR, we're delivering the very latest of this co-developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players." Capcom's Masaru Ijuin, senior manager of the engine development support section R&D Foundational Technology Department, also commented on the announcement, discussing how the updated tech has been used in Requiem. "With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of RE Engine to deepen the player's immersion in horror," Ijuin said. "For example, each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon, allowing it to move realistically in response to body motion and wind. The way light passes through his hair changes depending on how the strands of hair are overlapped as well. This detailed expression of texture is one of the many details that we would especially love for our fans to see. "The upgraded PSSR has allowed us to elevate our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and textural particularities, which are traditionally difficult to upscale because of their intricacy. We hope you will experience this unprecedented level of horror and visual fidelity, and the new gameplay feel it delivers." Sony has confirmed that multiple existing PS5 Pro games will be upgraded with the improved PSSR in March, but didn't say which ones. At the time, a system software update will add an option called 'Enhance PSSR Image Quality' that can be turned on in the settings to experience the update. PlayStation 5 Pro's upgraded FSR 4-powered PSSR upscaling debuts with Resident Evil Requiem
TL;DR: Sony's upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven upscaling technology based on AMD's FSR 4, will soon enhance PS5 Pro visuals and performance. Debuting in Resident Evil Requiem, this major update improves image quality and frame rates, reflecting six months of refinement. Sony's Mark Cerny, the Lead Architect for the PS5, PS5 Pro, and the upcoming PS6, has confirmed that the upgraded version of its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) will be rolling out to players in the coming weeks. PSSR is the company's take on DLSS and FSR 4, as it's an AI approach to upscaling that improves performance and image quality. Sony's new AI-powered PSSR upscaling levels up PS5 Pro visuals. "We've been hard at work on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm," Mark Cerny writes in the announcement. "We are happy to share that Resident Evil Requiem is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which is helping to keep both frame rate and image quality high." Mark Cerny also confirms that this new version of PSSR is a major upgrade over the version that launched alongside the PlayStation 5 Pro console, as it's based on the same technology that powers AMD's impressive FSR 4 for the Radeon RX 9000 Series of desktop PC graphics cards - modified and optimized for the PS5 Pro. "The algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR stem from our Project Amethyst partnership with AMD," Mark Cerny adds. "Through AMD's FSR 4 upscaling technology, PC gamers have already seen the benefits of our collaboration. With the updated PSSR, we're delivering the very latest of this co-developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players." And like FSR and DLSS, Sony will offer PS5 Pro owners a system-level override to enable "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" in any game that currently supports PSSR. Interestingly, this update is set to bring a notable improvement to PS5 Pro visuals, as Digital Foundry's deep dive into the new and improved PSSR in Resident Evil Requiem shows a significant improvement in image clarity compared to the baseline PS5's use of spatial upscaling to render at 4K. What also makes this update interesting is that, as the PS5 Pro's custom NPU is not as capable or powerful as the AI hardware in AMD's RDNA 4 line-up, Sony had to do a lot of work to get FSR 4 running on the console - hence its delayed arrival. And with that, as the technology can be ported to less-capable GPU hardware, here's hoping AMD can also bring it to RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 gamers on PC.

Resident Evil Requiem Confirmed as First Game to Use Sony's Upgraded PSSR Upscaler on PS5 Pro, More to Come in March - IGN
Sony has confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem is the first game to use its upgraded PSSR upscaler on PlayStation 5 Pro. The company made it official in a post on the PlayStation Blog, where Mark Cerny, Lead Architect, PS5 and PS5 Pro, said the upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks. PSSR is an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them, and it's been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date, Cerny explained. "We've been hard at work on a new version of PSSR, which takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm," he added. "We are happy to share that Resident Evil Requiem -- shipping today -- is the first title to use this more advanced PSSR, which is helping to keep both frame rate and image quality high." Capcom's Masaru Ijuin, Senior Manager Engine Development Support Section R&D Foundational Technology Department, commented: "With Resident Evil Requiem, we focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of RE Engine to deepen the player's immersion in horror. For example, each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon, allowing it to move realistically in response to body motion and wind. We hope you will experience this unprecedented level of horror and visual fidelity, and the new gameplay feel it delivers." To illustrate the point, Sony published one screenshot of Resident Evil Requiem featuring original PSSR upscaling alongside the same image featuring the new PSSR upscaling. The strands of hair do look slightly more defined in the second screenshot. Cerny said the algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR stems from Sony's Project Amethyst partnership with AMD. "Through AMD's FSR 4 upscaling technology, PC gamers have already seen the benefits of our collaboration," he said. "With the updated PSSR, we're delivering the very latest of this co-developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players." Sony said multiple existing games will be upgraded to the improved PSSR in March, but there's no word yet on which games will be included. There will also be a system software update at that time; selecting "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" in Settings on PS5 Pro will allow you to experience the new PSSR with any PS5 Pro games that currently support PSSR. "Once the system update releases next month, try it and see, some games may have noticeably crisper graphics," Cerny said. While the game has only been available a few hours, Requiem is already Steam's biggest ever launch for a Resident Evil title. Meanwhile, fans are still puzzling through a convoluted in-game mystery that has stumped players with early copies -- it's more complicated than anything seen in the franchise to date, and something we're keeping a close eye on. "Like the result of an experiment conducted in an underground Umbrella Corporation lab, Resident Evil Requiem successfully splices two separate strains of survival horror together into the one highly infectious new mutation," IGN wrote in our human-authored Resident Evil Requiem review, awarding the game 9/10.
