Meant to power some of the best cheap phones and mid-range devices, the 7s Gen 3 promises more generative AI capabilities and mobile gaming improvements. They are also hyping improved 4K video capture and up to 200 megapixel photo taking along with AI editing. "Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will bring the best of the 7-series to more mid-tier devices by selecting top 7-series features including on-device AI support," said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. According to Qualcomm, the Gen 3 chip offers almost 20% higher CPU performance, 12% overall power savings and 30% better AI performance. We won't know for sure until we can test any devices that actually feature the chipset. For performance, Qualcomm is using their Kryo CPU which features 7 cores which includes four efficiency cores and three performance cores. It also has an Adreno GPU for HDR gaming and decoding. All of this is meant to make AI more accessible to mid-range devices especially with new features like updates to Google's Gemini and internal AI features like Samsung's Galaxy AI, another company working to bring AI to non-flagship devices. As for availability, Qualcomm says that Xiaomi will launch the first phone with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset in September with other manufacturers to follow. Qualcomm didn't say what other company's will have devices featuring this chip, though promotional materials mention Samsung and Sharp. A phone equipped with the 7s Gen 3 can shoot 200MP images and utilize Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, for example. When compared to the old 7s Gen 2, the new 7s Gen 3 is a notable step into the future. It boasts a 20% increase in CPU performance, a 40% bump in accelerated GPU performance, 12% greater power efficiency, plus a 30% boost in on-device AI capabilities. On-device AI is the marketing gimmick, predictably. But it's an understandable gimmick. Manufacturers are desperate to bring more AI functionality to smartphones, and in case you haven't noticed, manufacturers are the ones who buy these chips from Qualcomm. That said, the AI stuff that Qualcomm is highlighting in this release will make your eyes glaze over -- Llama 2 and Baichuan-7B support, increased Micro NPU functionality -- the average person won't benefit from this stuff until a killer app utilizes it. However, Qualcomm does advertise two AI features that may immediately benefit mid-range and budget smartphone buyers. The first is on-device multi-language translation and transcription (no need for the cloud). And the second is noise cancelation for phone and video calls. We'll see the first Snapdragon 7s Gen 3-equipped smartphones in late 2024 or early 2025. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 has full support for both Baichuan-7B and Llama 2, and presumably could be used to bring some of the on-device features we're seeing on phones from Samsung to lower price points. Could next year's Galaxy A-series join the world of Galaxy AI? With chips like these, it certainly seems like it's a matter of when, not if. But even if you don't care about AI, this seems like yet another respectable midrange chipset from Qualcomm, a company so good at making SoCs these days, it's almost easy to take it for granted. As for when you'll see this chipset start to appear in smartphones, Xiaomi will be first up to bat with an announcement next month -- potentially as early as IFA. Samsung is listed as a partner, though, which hopefully ensures a US-bound device rocking this particular chipset.
