Plans have been unveiled to transform part of the former Ravenscraig Steelworks site in Scotland into one of the UK's largest green AI data centres, with a potential £3.9 billion investment that could significantly boost the local economy and job market.

Ambitious Plans for Ravenscraig's Transformation

Edinburgh and York-based renewable energy developer Apatura has unveiled plans to transform part of the Ravenscraig site in Scotland into one of the UK's largest green data centres. The proposed £3.9 billion project aims to develop battery energy storage on 160 acres of the post-industrial site, less than 20km east of Glasgow

The data centre would be powered by 550 megawatts of grid connections, scheduled to come online by 2030. This ambitious project is part of Apatura's broader initiative to progress five AI-ready sites across Scotland's central belt, backed by more than 1.6GW of confirmed grid connections

Giles Hanglin, Apatura's CEO, stated, "We've secured the land and grid, and we're already working closely with relevant organisations locally and nationally to make sure the benefits are widely felt"

. The company believes that this plan, developed in collaboration with North Lanarkshire Council and site owners Ravenscraig Ltd, could help reduce grid congestion and cut consumer bills

Economic Impact and Job Creation

An independent economic study has calculated that the project could contribute an additional 0.4% to Scotland's annual GDP once operational. The construction phase alone is expected to deliver a one-off £1.2 billion gross value added boost, with an estimated annual GVA contribution of £729 million

The project is projected to support 2,399 jobs, combining direct, indirect, and induced roles

. Russell Wilkie, director of Ravenscraig, emphasized the project's potential, stating, "This multi-billion pound investment project is a platform for national progress, combining energy, digital infrastructure, and regional innovation to create tangible economic and social benefits for Scotland and for the wider UK economy"

AI Growth Zone Initiative

Apatura has put forward Ravenscraig as a candidate in the UK Government's AI Growth Zone initiative, which is currently under consideration by the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology. This initiative aims to identify the best sites in Britain as part of the global race for AI supremacy

Site History and Future Vision

Once home to the Ravenscraig Steelworks, which closed in 1992, the site is now one of Europe's largest brownfield regeneration and community creation initiatives. The data centre would occupy the area to the east of the Wishaw Deviation freight railway line and vacant employment land known as SevenFourEight

Pamela Nash, MP for Motherwell, Wishaw and Carluke, expressed her support for the project, stating, "Ravenscraig stands ready for the next chapter, a world-class digital and AI hub powered by Scotland's renewable strength, creating thousands of local jobs during construction, driving billions in economic value, and transforming post-industrial land into the beating heart of a green, future-ready economy"

Challenges and Community Concerns

While the project promises significant economic benefits, it's worth noting that previous development plans for the site have faced challenges. In 2021, families living in new homes on the site objected to plans for a major industrial development, which conflicted with earlier proposals for shops and community facilities

. The success of this new AI data centre project will likely depend on effectively addressing such community concerns and ensuring that the benefits are indeed "widely felt" as promised by the developers.
