Report: Samsung's tri-fold phone, XR headset, and AI smart glasses to be revealed at Sep 29 Unpacked event
Samsung is set to unveil three new devices -- a tri-fold smartphone, its Project Moohan XR headset, and a pair of AI smart glasses -- at an Unpacked event on September 29 in South Korea, according to multiple sources in the Korean media (such as NewsPim and Newsworks). The tri-fold phone isn't a surprise since Samsung has been talking about it all year and ZDNET captured some video at Mobile World Congress in March 2025. The Project Moohan headset is not a surprise either, since Samsung has been teasing it for years as a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. Google also demoed Project Moohan in May at Google I/O, where ZDNET's Kerry Wan and Sabrina Ortiz got the opportunity to try it and were impressed. Also: I finally tried Samsung's XR headset, and it beats my Apple Vision Pro in meaningful ways However, the biggest surprise is that Samsung is also on the verge of announcing their competitor to the market-leading Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. This appears to be what has been codenamed "Project Haean" (haean means seaside or coast in Korean) and first reported by ETNews in Korea earlier this year. These are reported to be audio-only glasses powered by Qualcomm's AR1 chip for AI smart glasses, and they would presumably run Android XR. Also: I demoed this rare tri-foldable phone at MWC - it gave me glimpse at Samsung's next big thing This would be an unprecedented third Samsung Unpacked event in one calendar year. However, Anshel Sag, Principal Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy thinks a third event makes a lot of sense this year. "It's a good idea, mainly because it allows the company to focus on these riskier bets and newer, more experimental platforms without drawing attention away from product lines likely to have higher volume," said Sag. "Having XR devices and a tri-fold in their own event allows Samsung to talk more about the future and not affect its products already shipping in higher volumes, like the Fold7 and Flip7," he added. "It's also crucial for Samsung to set the tone for Android XR and to do it right, which means giving it more attention in its own event." The most recent report from NewsPim states that the September 29 event will be hosted in South Korea and that the XR headset will launch first in Korea on October 13. The other Korean sources report that the tri-fold phone will also launch first in Korea in the coming months and that the smart glasses will launch before the end of 2025 -- but it's unclear whether the glasses would launch locally or internationally first. Samsung has only hosted one other Unpacked event in South Korea and that was its 2023 summer foldables launch. That one took place in Seoul and I attended it for ZDNET along with other members of the international press. ZDNET reached out to Samsung for comment on this story and will update the article when we learn more.

Samsung could be lining up a third Unpacked event this year - these are the 3 exciting devices that could make an appearance
The event is rumored to being taking place on September 29 in South Korea, but Samsung has yet to confirm anything Samsung is gearing up for another phone and tablet launch event on September 4, but the company is also tipped to announce three exclusive devices at the end of the month at another Unpacked event in South Korea for September 29. The event would be Samsung's third Unpacked event this year, and according to SamMobile the company will announce its long-awaited tri-folding Galaxy phone, an XR headset, and AI glasses. Samsung teased the Galaxy tri-fold during the Galaxy S25 launch in January, but didn't reveal much about the device. Most of what we have to go on so far is based on leaks and rumors, including an animation shared in a recent post on X by a leaker that shows its possible design (see below). The same post hints that Samsung's next foldable could pack a triple-lens rear camera array similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7's, something which SamMobile also highlighted. The Galaxy tri-fold is also tipped to have a 6.5-inch cover screen, as well as an almost 10-inch main screen when the device is unfolded. As for Samsung's rumored AI glasses (reportedly developed under the codename Project Haean), they're set to include an onboard camera, speakers, and a microphone. Back in May, we had a brief hands-on session with Samsung's prototype XR glasses, and the finished product is likely to offer stiff competition for Meta's Ray Ban smart glasses. We've been following the progress of Samsung's first Android XR headset (nicknamed Project Moohan) since it was announced in December last year, and it's shaping up to be a serious competitor to the Apple Vision Pro. However, when it comes to sale dates, it's still a little up in the air. While Samsung has yet to confirm a release date for the headset, SamMobile claims the company is targeting October 13. The outlet also says that if this is the case the Galaxy tri-fold smartphone could go on sale shortly after, but we might have to wait a little longer for its smart glasses to drop, with SamMobile predicting that those will go on sale just before the end of the year - it's also been rumored that they may only launch in South Korea initially before getting a wider rollout.

Perhaps the most surprising announcement is Samsung's entry into the smart glasses market. Codenamed "Project Haean," these AI-powered glasses are set to compete with Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses 1. The device is expected to be audio-only, powered by Qualcomm's AR1 chip, and likely to run on Android XR. Features are said to include an onboard camera, speakers, and a microphone 2.
This Unpacked event marks an unprecedented third such event for Samsung in a single calendar year. Anshel Sag, Principal Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, views this strategy positively:
"It's a good idea, mainly because it allows the company to focus on these riskier bets and newer, more experimental platforms without drawing attention away from product lines likely to have higher volume," Sag explained 1.
According to reports, the XR headset is slated for an initial launch in Korea on October 13. The tri-fold phone is expected to follow shortly after, also debuting first in Korea. The AI smart glasses are anticipated to launch before the end of 2025, though it's unclear whether they will see a local or international release first 12.
Samsung's ambitious lineup demonstrates its commitment to pushing the boundaries of consumer technology. By focusing on foldable phones, XR experiences, and AI-integrated wearables, Samsung is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation tech. This move also sets the stage for the future of Android XR, potentially influencing the direction of the entire ecosystem.
As the tech world eagerly awaits official confirmation and more details from Samsung, this event promises to be a significant milestone in the evolution of mobile and wearable technology. The combination of innovative hardware and AI integration signals a new era in how consumers interact with their devices and the world around them.
