Samsung's Trifold Phone and AI Glasses Reportedly Set for Sept. 29 Launch
Is three better than two? Apparently, we're about to find out -- again. Samsung will reportedly launch its Galaxy Z TriFold in South Korea on Sept. 29 in its third Unpacked event of 2025. The company will also be introducing its Project Moohan mixed reality headset and AI smart glasses at the same time. If Samsung does indeed unleash the Galaxy Z TriFold later this month, it would be the second triple-screen phone in existence. Huawei last year rolled out its Mate XT in China -- we kinda sorta liked it. The Mate XT is not available to buy in the US, and it's unknown when Samsung's trifold will be available for US consumers. Thanks to a number of rumors, we already have some idea of what the Z TriFold might look like. Its main display apparently will fold in from the sides, according to animations that @TechHighest showed on X last week. When the phone is closed, there is a separate display on the other side of the phone. A report out of South Korea also outlined more specs: a 10-inch OLED display; a triple-camera system with a 200-megapixel main camera, 12-megapixel ultrawide camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera; and a price tag of about $3,000. We should note that although the term "trifold" is being widely used, these types of phone only fold on two hinges. We prefer the term "triple-screen phone" because of the three displays that are available when the phone is fully folded out. Samsung also appears ready to challenge Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses with its own intelligent specs. Samsung's version will reportedly be audio only, powered by Qualcomm's AR1 chip for AI smart glasses, and will presumably run Android XR.

Report: Samsung's tri-fold phone, XR headset, and AI smart glasses to be revealed at Sep 29 Unpacked event
Samsung is set to unveil three new devices -- a tri-fold smartphone, its Project Moohan XR headset, and a pair of AI smart glasses -- at an Unpacked event on September 29 in South Korea, according to multiple sources in the Korean media (such as NewsPim and Newsworks). The tri-fold phone isn't a surprise since Samsung has been talking about it all year and ZDNET captured some video at Mobile World Congress in March 2025. The Project Moohan headset is not a surprise either, since Samsung has been teasing it for years as a collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. Google also demoed Project Moohan in May at Google I/O, where ZDNET's Kerry Wan and Sabrina Ortiz got the opportunity to try it and were impressed. Also: I finally tried Samsung's XR headset, and it beats my Apple Vision Pro in meaningful ways However, the biggest surprise is that Samsung is also on the verge of announcing their competitor to the market-leading Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. This appears to be what has been codenamed "Project Haean" (haean means seaside or coast in Korean) and first reported by ETNews in Korea earlier this year. These are reported to be audio-only glasses powered by Qualcomm's AR1 chip for AI smart glasses, and they would presumably run Android XR. Also: I demoed this rare tri-foldable phone at MWC - it gave me glimpse at Samsung's next big thing This would be an unprecedented third Samsung Unpacked event in one calendar year. However, Anshel Sag, Principal Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy thinks a third event makes a lot of sense this year. "It's a good idea, mainly because it allows the company to focus on these riskier bets and newer, more experimental platforms without drawing attention away from product lines likely to have higher volume," said Sag. "Having XR devices and a tri-fold in their own event allows Samsung to talk more about the future and not affect its products already shipping in higher volumes, like the Fold7 and Flip7," he added. "It's also crucial for Samsung to set the tone for Android XR and to do it right, which means giving it more attention in its own event." The most recent report from NewsPim states that the September 29 event will be hosted in South Korea and that the XR headset will launch first in Korea on October 13. The other Korean sources report that the tri-fold phone will also launch first in Korea in the coming months and that the smart glasses will launch before the end of 2025 -- but it's unclear whether the glasses would launch locally or internationally first. Samsung has only hosted one other Unpacked event in South Korea and that was its 2023 summer foldables launch. That one took place in Seoul and I attended it for ZDNET along with other members of the international press. ZDNET reached out to Samsung for comment on this story and will update the article when we learn more.

Samsung 'Galaxy Glasses' powered by Android XR are reportedly on track to be unveiled this month
The product will be powered by Google Gemini and have features not included in Meta Ray-Bans. Samsung's AI smart glasses to compete with Meta Ray-Bans will reportedly be one of the three cutting edge devices Samsung will announce at an Unpacked event in South Korea on September 29, as ZDNET has reported. The other two products are the Project Moohan XR headset and the tri-fold smartphone. Like the Meta Ray-Bans, Samsung's glasses will be audio-only and will be focused on features such as providing faster and more convenient access to an AI assistant, cameras, and audio for calls, music, and podcasts, Also, based on the same reports out of Korea from Newsworks, ETNews and NewsPim, the Samsung glasses will include navigation, real-time translation, and situational awareness. The name of the product will likely be "Samsung Galaxy Glasses," based on a Samsung filing with the US Patent Office. Also: I wore Google's XR glasses, and they already beat my Ray-Ban Meta in 3 ways Based on prior statements by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm, the Galaxy Glasses will run Android XR and will most likely be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, the same chip that powers Meta Ray-Bans -- even though Qualcomm announced its next-gen Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 in June 2025 at the AWE event. During the Google I/O keynote in May 2025, the GM of Android XR, Shahram Izadi, said, "We're taking our partnership with Samsung to the next level by extending Android XR beyond headsets to glasses. We're creating the software and reference hardware platform to enable the ecosystem to build great glasses alongside us. Our glasses prototypes are already being used by trusted testers." As one of Google's founding collaborators on Android, Samsung would certainly be considered a trusted tester. Anshel Sag, Principal Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, sees a clear path forward for Samsung in this space. He said, "Samsung really gets it, based on everything I've seen from the company regarding wearables. Samsung makes some of the best hardware available, and if the company can ship competitive hardware paired with Google Gemini and Android XR, that could be a very powerful solution." Also: Look out, Meta Ray-Bans! These AI glasses just raised over $1M in pre-orders in 3 days However, Sag doesn't think there's been enough time for Samsung to have integrated the next-gen Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 chip for smart glasses that was released this spring and promises a 20% smaller footprint, lower power consumption, better image quality in photos and videos, on-device language models, and better privacy by sending fewer AI queries to the cloud. "I am not sure it will be an AR1+ Gen 1, but it could be -- only if the announcement happens this year and the product ships next year," said Sag. "When I last spoke to Qualcomm at AWE 2025, it didn't seem like we were getting AR1+ Gen 1 products until sometime next year." Let's not forget that before Samsung's September 29 announcement, Meta will unveil its next smart glasses at Meta Connect on September 17. Meta is expected to release two products -- a set of $800 AR glasses codenamed Hypernova and an incremental upgrade to its popular audio-only AI glasses, the Meta Ray-Bans. There's also a lot more happening in the smart glasses space this fall with new products expected from Rokid, Even Realities, Brilliant Labs, and others. ZDNET reached out to Samsung for comment and will provide updates when we learn more.

Samsung just quietly teased its Galaxy Glasses - and almost no one noticed
It's well known that Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm are joining forces to release wearable devices powered by Android XR. After all, the three companies have been talking about it for two and a half years and they've made it clear that Project Moohan -- their XR headset to compete with Apple Vision Pro -- will launch before the end of 2025. But there's another product that they've been working on, but not talking about as much -- only dropping a few hints and winks here and there. And they just dropped another big tease. I'm talking about AI smart glasses -- the audio-only kind that will compete with Meta Ray-Bans. Korean news outlets have said they will be announced at a September 29 Samsung Unpacked event in Korea, as ZDNET has reported. Google quietly mentioned at its I/O event in May that it was working on both "Headsets and Glasses" with Samsung. Also: Samsung 'Galaxy Glasses' powered by Android XR are reportedly on track to be unveiled this month And then last Thursday, September 4, Samsung Executive Vice President Jay Kim ended the livestream of their Galaxy Event that announced the S25 FE phone and the Galaxy Tab S11 Series tablets by issuing a clear nod to the new device likely to be called Galaxy Glasses. "We're leading the way in mobile AI, but we're still in the early stages," said Kim. "By collaborating with companies that share our vision we're creating entirely new products and reimagining what everyday experiences can be." Samsung had just announced that it was putting all of its Galaxy AI features into its $649 mid-range phone -- and no longer reserving the best AI features for premium smartphones. But "entirely new products" was a clear pointer toward something not previously mentioned. Also: I tried the Samsung Galaxy S25 FE, and it got big upgrades in several ways And then Kim added, "We're also working together to create a device that understands context and supports you seamlessly in the background, enhancing your everyday life. We can't wait to share more exciting news with you as our journey continues. So stay tuned." That does not sound like a phone, or an XR headset. A device that understands your context would be one that's with you all the time and likely has cameras and microphones. And one that is seamlessly in the background would be with you most of the day and not necessarily be constantly demanding your attention. That sounds a lot like a pair of smart glasses. Kim ended by saying, "I'm happy to share that Galaxy AI is already on over 200 million devices around the world... and we expect to double that this year." Getting to 400 million devices with Galaxy AI is certainly heavily dependent on selling a lot more of those mid-range $649 phones, but Kim also said thst right after mentioning the launch of new products and new experiences -- clearly connecting that with doubling the number of sold devices. That puts all eyes on that September 29 event, which hasn't been officially announced yet. Also: 5 Meta Ray-Ban upgrades that have me excited for September 17 When we think about a product that could lock horns with Meta Ray-Bans, it's not very hard to see where Samsung -- with an assist from Google -- could produce a very competitive product. Samsung has a lot of expertise in miniaturizing technology in the ways that's desperately needed in smart glasses. And one of the biggest weaknesses of the Meta Ray-Bans is the fact that their AI is powered by Meta's limited Llama AI models. A pair of smart glasses powered by Google Gemini is likely to be a lot more useful. And it's looking more and more likely that the product could be announced later this month -- although it's unclear when the product would actually be available to buy. ZDNET reached out to Samsung for comment and will update this article as we learn more.

Samsung Could Unveil 3 More Major Products Later This Month
Samsung 'Project Moohan' Android XR headset (Credit: Eric Zeman/PCMag) Don't miss out on our latest stories. Add PCMag as a preferred source on Google. Samsung has lined up a launch event this Thursday. While that event will probably showcase the Galaxy S25 FE and two new tablets, another rumored event later this month is expected to feature some of Samsung's more ambitious projects. As ZDNET reports, citing multiple news outlets in South Korea, Samsung plans to host an Unpacked event on Sept. 29 to announce its long-awaited trifold phone, "Project Moohan" Android XR glasses, and a pair of AI glasses. The trifold phone and the XR glasses have been in discussions ever since Samsung teased some early designs at the Mobile World Congress in March. The XR glasses, in particular, seemed like a finished product. Once you put on the headset, you'll be able to watch content, navigate apps, or tap into AI chatbots for assistance. Samsung hopes it marks "a significant step toward more context-aware and personalized experiences that enhance everyday life in incredibly immersive ways." The headset is expected to cost $2,000 at launch, which is $1,500 less than the Apple Vision Pro it will compete against. As for the trifold phone, while Samsung didn't reveal the exact design, it teased a bunch of trifold screens at the event. Later in July, the company's mobile head, TM Roh, confirmed it was working on a trifold phone and was planning to release it before the end of this year. According to SamMobile, the trifold could come with a 6.5-inch cover screen and a 10-inch foldable screen, making the device look like a full-fledged tablet when opened. As for the features, it is rumored to run the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, ship with Android 16 and One UI 8 out of the box, and offer up to 16GB of RAM, 1TB of storage, and a triple-camera setup on the back. The AI glasses, on the other hand, may rival Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. According to ZDNET, this could be the "Project Haean" that Korea's ET News reported earlier this year. It's expected to come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 chip and be audio-only. While Samsung may announce the three devices at the same event, it could opt for a staggered release, according to Korean sources. The XR headset may launch exclusively in the country on Oct. 13, with the trifold and AI glasses to follow in the months after that.

Samsung might unveil Galaxy Z TriFold, Project Moohan headset later this month
While Samsung has an event scheduled for later this week to unveil the Galaxy S25 FE and Galaxy Tab S11 series, it might not be the only announcement planned for September after all. A pair of reports out today suggest Samsung is targeting as early as the end of this month to hold an official Unpacked event for both its upcoming tri-fold -- rumored to be called the Galaxy Z TriFold -- and its long-awaited Project Moohan headset that doubles as a launching ground for Android XR. Our first teaser comes from leaker Ice Universe, who suggested the company has plans for a September 29th event held in South Korea. In addition to the foldable and the headset, Samsung could also launch a pair of "AI glasses" called Galaxy Glasses, presumable powered by, among other things, Galaxy AI. Echoing Ice Universe is a new report out in ET News, suggesting a reveal "as early as next month" ahead of a November launch. Samsung events can occasionally slip backwards in time -- see the S25 Edge announcement earlier this year -- so the possibility of either a late September or early October unveiling does make sense. After all, the company only promised to ship its upcoming slate of gadgets before the end of the year, without giving much in the way of specifics. That said, it doesn't appear Samsung expects its tri-foldable smartphone to sell particularly well -- at least in its first iteration. 50,000 units are allegedly being prepped for the upcoming launch, specifically to gauge consumer interest before presumably delivering a broader launch in the generations to come. It's a similar approach to what Samsung took with the original Galaxy Fold, and considering we know the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is broadly doing well after a couple of years of stagnant foldable sales, clearly it's a strategy that can pay off in the long run. The Galaxy Z TriFold has also been rumored to be region-locked to South Korea and China, the latter of which will see Huawei launch its second-gen tri-fold this month. Considering the fall release window and the relatively paltry amount of units prepped -- not to mention the rumors of a Korea-based announcement -- it wouldn't be too surprising to see Samsung stick to the precedent it set with the Galaxy Z Fold SE last year.

Forget the iPhone 17 -- Samsung tipped to reveal a trifold phone and AI glasses later this month
Apple may be launching the iPhone 17 next week, but Samsung doesn't seem to care as it has an Unpacked event coming on September 4. And that might not be the only Unpacked showcase happening in September. A pair of leaks suggests that Samsung could have an Unpacked event at the end of September -- or possibly in early October -- that will take place in South Korea. The event will allegedly feature the debut of the rumored Galaxy Z TriFold phone and possibly a pair of Galaxy Glasses, alongside the much-teased Project Moohan headset. All three devices have been rumored previously, or in the case of Moohan, actually shown off at various events throughout the year. According to regular Samsung leaker Ice Universe, Samsung is going to hold an Unpacked event in South Korea on September 29. They claim that Samsung will release the Galaxy Z Trifold during the event. Additionally, Samsung is expected to share more information on the Android XR Project Moohan headset and "AI glasses (Galaxy Glasses)." At the same time, a new report from the Korean publication ET News suggests a debut date "as early as next month" before the trifold hits shelves in November. Even if its not September 29, exactly, that still points to a fairly soon release. According to ET News, Samsung is setting low expectations for the trifold. The company is allegedly only prepping 50,000 units for sale to gauge customer interest. It's a somewhat similar strategy the company took with its Z Fold series, which also only shipped around 50,000 when the first iteration arrived. The company's foldables finally seem to have gained traction with the excellent Galaxy Z Fold 7 though. With the lower production amount, it's not clear if the trifold will make its way to the United States. It has been rumored that the new device will only be available in China and South Korea. Neither Ice Universe nor ET News has provided any insight on where the trifold will be available. However, the device is being announced in Korea, so it wouldn't be too surprising. Samsung did something similar with the Galaxy Z Fold SE last year, which only launched in its home country. As for Project Moohan, Samsung has shown the XR headset at several events this year including the Galaxy S25 Unpacked in January, Google I/O in May and AWE 2025 in June. That device will likely come to the United States, and it should launch before the end of the year. The AI smart glasses haven't seen many leaks in comparison, but a recent rumor claimed that the "Haean" glasses would launch alongside the Moohan headset.

Samsung could be lining up a third Unpacked event this year - these are the 3 exciting devices that could make an appearance
The event is rumored to being taking place on September 29 in South Korea, but Samsung has yet to confirm anything Samsung is gearing up for another phone and tablet launch event on September 4, but the company is also tipped to announce three exclusive devices at the end of the month at another Unpacked event in South Korea for September 29. The event would be Samsung's third Unpacked event this year, and according to SamMobile the company will announce its long-awaited tri-folding Galaxy phone, an XR headset, and AI glasses. Samsung teased the Galaxy tri-fold during the Galaxy S25 launch in January, but didn't reveal much about the device. Most of what we have to go on so far is based on leaks and rumors, including an animation shared in a recent post on X by a leaker that shows its possible design (see below). The same post hints that Samsung's next foldable could pack a triple-lens rear camera array similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7's, something which SamMobile also highlighted. The Galaxy tri-fold is also tipped to have a 6.5-inch cover screen, as well as an almost 10-inch main screen when the device is unfolded. As for Samsung's rumored AI glasses (reportedly developed under the codename Project Haean), they're set to include an onboard camera, speakers, and a microphone. Back in May, we had a brief hands-on session with Samsung's prototype XR glasses, and the finished product is likely to offer stiff competition for Meta's Ray Ban smart glasses. We've been following the progress of Samsung's first Android XR headset (nicknamed Project Moohan) since it was announced in December last year, and it's shaping up to be a serious competitor to the Apple Vision Pro. However, when it comes to sale dates, it's still a little up in the air. While Samsung has yet to confirm a release date for the headset, SamMobile claims the company is targeting October 13. The outlet also says that if this is the case the Galaxy tri-fold smartphone could go on sale shortly after, but we might have to wait a little longer for its smart glasses to drop, with SamMobile predicting that those will go on sale just before the end of the year - it's also been rumored that they may only launch in South Korea initially before getting a wider rollout.
