This time, for the Galaxy S24 FE, Samsung is squaring off the sides while flooding their phone with all the Galaxy AI features from this year. The new $650 FE phones effectively encapsulate everything Samsung pushed on its mobile devices in 2024. I enjoyed the Galaxy S23 FE for its 'less is more' approach. For the newly announced S24 FE, Samsung has instead focused on implementing as many AI software features that came to the S24 series as possible, including the S24 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip and Fold 6. That includes several photo features like Portrait Studio, Generative Edit, and Sketch to Image, letting you add AI-generated objects to existing photos. It’s all features I’ve used before, and as I don’t have much use for AI image features beyond sticking silly images of purple dinosaurs in front of my group pics, I don’t see much joy in it. I tried Sketch to Image on the Galaxy S24 FE, and while it works about as well as before, it’s much harder to draw than on the larger screen of the S24 Ultra with the accompanying S Pen. Samsung has pulled back the curtain on its new Galaxy S24 FE, and although it's supposed to be a mid-range phone, it offers a similar experience to the flagship S24 model. At an event in New York, Samsung today unveiled the final model of its Galaxy S24 series -- the mid-range Galaxy S24 FE. Well, the FE models are usually the last in their respective lines unless the company decides to release a second option, but we doubt that'll be the case. Regardless, the S24 FE is shaping up to be a solid, relatively affordable smartphone that could have prospective iPhone 16 buyers thinking twice. It won't just be a demure smartphone; it'll boast significant improvements compared to its predecessors. In fact, many of its features are ripped straight from the more powerful S24 phones. See below for the breakdown. Just to give you an idea, the Galaxy S24 FE sports a larger screen, multiple Galaxy AI features, and a camera system similar to the base-level S24 smartphone. As alluded to earlier, the Galaxy S24 FE comes with a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display, dwarfing the base Galaxy S24's 6.2-inch screen and putting it more in line with the S24 Plus model. The extra bulk did increase the weight to 7.51oz. Samsung also saw fit to upgrade the battery capacity to 4,700mAh (up from 4,500mAh), extending the lifespan to a rated maximum of 81 hours on a single charge. The tech giant also made a few arguable downgrades. Instead of a Qualcomm chipset this year, Samsung gave the S24 FE a less-proven Exynos 2400 chipset. Naturally, it's harder to gauge just how well the phone's performance will be, but I wouldn't expect a massive decrease, so stress not. Regarding the camera system, the new model keeps the rear 50MP wide-angle and 12MP ultra-wide-angle lenses. Samsung is making up for this by introducing a new photography feature to the S24 FE called ProVisual Engine. This harnesses "AI algorithms" to enhance image quality for what that's worth. We've already gone over some of the similarities between the base Galaxy S24 and S24 FE, although there are a few that are worth mentioning again. The most impactful of these are the AI-powered features. These include but are not limited to Circle to Search for interactive web searching, Note Assist for summarizing audio recordings, and Generative Edit for creative photo arrangements. The smartphone launches on October 3 and will be available in four different colors: Blue, Graphite, Gray, and Mint. A fifth Yellow color will roll out later. Along with the Galaxy S24 FE, Samsung is also releasing an updated LTE version of the Galaxy Watch FE. It'll offer familiar features, such as Energy Score tracking and stylish designs, but what's new is data connectivity, allowing the watch to quickly send and respond to messages, make calls, and access the web when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Samsung has just unveiled the Galaxy S24 FE, its latest "Fan Edition" smartphone, but with a questionable value proposition for those "fans." Following up on last year's Galaxy S23 FE and two other "Fan Edition" releases before it, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is a value-focused version of the company's mainstream flagship. Similar hardware and design, a comparable camera array, and watered-down specs, all for a lesser price point. This year, the Galaxy S24 FE is best compared to the Galaxy S24+ thanks to the use of a larger 6.7-inch display. The FHD+ "Dynamic AMOLED" display isn't as high in resolution as the S24+, but it should look rather similar to most users. On that display, you'll find an optical under-display fingerprint sensor and a 10MP camera that's used for optional face unlock. Under the hood, there's an Exynos 2400e chipset, an unlocked version of the standard Exynos 2400, in all regions. In the US, that means a switch from Snapdragon, where the Galaxy S23 FE used the generation-old Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 instead of an Exynos chip. The device also gets 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, and runs Android 14 out of the box with Samsung's Galaxy AI suite and Google's Circle to Search. It also comes with 7 years of Android OS upgrades and security updates. The battery here is 4,700 mAh with 25W wired charging and wireless charging too. The battery is slightly smaller than Galaxy S24+, and there are three rear cameras. A 50MP primary shooter, 12MP ultrawide, and an 8MP 3x telephoto. Samsung will open sales of the Galaxy S24 FE on October 3 in give colors - Graphite, Grey, Yellow, Mint, and Blue - starting at $649. Samsung's store is offering up to $400 off with trade-in and a discount on Buds FE. On the whole, the Galaxy S24 FE is not an awful package, but the value is questionable. At $649, it's $350 cheaper than the Galaxy S24+ it's most comparable to, but with lesser cameras, a smaller battery, half the storage, 25% less RAM, and a significantly worse processor if you're buying in the US. And that's not to mention that the Galaxy S24+ is often available for hundreds of dollars off through carriers, and $200 off through Samsung's own online store right now. Where Samsung's first "Fan Edition" smartphones offered a clear advantage over their more expensive counterparts, it's harder to see the value this time around, especially seeing as this is a device not really meant for "Fans," but rather for cheap carrier offers. But from those same carriers, you'll probably find the Galaxy S24+ for just a couple of extra dollars per month, or less. Verizon, for instance, is currently giving away the Galaxy S24+ for free with trade-in, or just $5/month for new customers with no trades. With that in mind, how could the Galaxy S24 FE possibly present a better value? And that's not to mention alternatives you can get elsewhere, such as the OnePlus 12R which offers a remarkably similar package, but better pretty much across the board.

While most Android enthusiasts probably associate Samsung with its premium smartphones (foldable or otherwise) there's a whole world of budget and midrange devices out there that manage to sell particularly well. Sure, the Galaxy A-series makes up the bulk of these units, but the FE range fits somewhere in the middle of the brand's portfolio, and that's what we're seeing a new addition to today. Samsung is finally unveiling its long-rumored Galaxy S24 FE, the fourth in its modern "Fan Edition" lineup, but whether it's capable of capturing that long-elusive magic last seen on the Galaxy S20 FE remains to be seen. If last year's Galaxy S23 FE existed somewhere in between the Galaxy S23 and S23+ -- with weaker specs than both, of course -- the Galaxy S24 FE is taking a different approach. This year's phone is more like an underpowered Galaxy S24+, with both phones rocking a 6.7-inch display. As with most of Samsung's non-foldables, the general design language is basically unchanged. The S24 FE is a slab of metal and glass with three protruding camera lenses on the back and a hole punch selfie camera up front -- nothing you haven't seen before. Larger bezels surrounding the screen means you'll be looking at a larger footprint overall: 77.3 x 162.0 x 8.0mm compared to the S24+'s 158.5 x 75.9 x 7.7 mm dimensions. It's heavier too, weighing in at a whopping 213 grams compared to the lighter 197 gram S24+. Other downgrades include the swap to a 1080p panel that peaks at 1,900 nits of brightness, a far cry from the 1440p, 2,600 nits panel on the more premium alternative. Under the hood, you're looking at, well, more downgrades. The Galaxy S24 FE comes with 128GB or 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and a 4,700mAh battery, all paired with the company's new Exynos 2400e processor. In comparison, the Galaxy S24+ gets you a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or a standard Exynos 2400 (depending on where you're buying it), a 4,900mAh battery, 256GB or 512GB of storage, and 12GB of RAM. Those are a lot of little differences in a device that looks so radically familiar. The cameras are a similar story, as Samsung has opted to keep the same trio of lenses from last year's Galaxy S23 FE. The 50MP wide lens, 12MP ultrawide lens, and 8MP 3x telephoto lens didn't do much to impress us at the time, and I'm not sure improved "low-light portraits" are going to do much to change the conversation this year. In general, Samsung's camera systems are in need of a long overdue overhaul -- even AP's resident Samsung aficionado Zachary Kew-Denniss has expressed his frustration with the company's poor processing. It's tough to say who the Galaxy S24 FE is for Aside from carriers looking ahead to the holidays Close If it seems like I'm leaning a little too heavily on comparing these two phones, it's because I'm not sure I understand why the Galaxy S24 FE exists. An argument can be made that, all together, these downgrades add up to $350 worth of savings compared to the $1,000 S24+. On the other hand, we're less than four months away from the rumored launch of the Galaxy S25 series, which means finding Samsung's current middle child on sale is really, really easy. All three US carriers have the phone heavily marked down on three year payment plans, with AT&T literally willing to give it to you for free with a qualifying trade-in. At that point, this price difference only matters to the minority of customers buying their phones unlocked without a carrier subsidy -- not exactly a great business strategy. We'll reserve full judgment on the Galaxy S24 FE until we can get our hands on it. It's possible that this device blows us away in daily use, representing a far smarter buy than the Galaxy S24+ that's been around since January of this year. But if you're looking to upgrade your Android phone and you're on a budget, you'd be foolish not to take a look at carrier deals on Samsung's flagship hardware. The Galaxy S24+ is a great phone, shaky camera performance notwithstanding, and the S24 FE's greatest selling point might be pushing customers to a more premium device. If, however, the trade-offs on display here won't bother you, and you're looking to buy an unlocked phone that can't take advantage of carrier deals, the Galaxy S24 FE might serve you well. It's going on sale October 3rd for a starting price of $650, and it'll be available in Blue, Graphite, Gray, Mint, and Yellow. While it's completely possible the overall experience leaves us surprised, I can't help but feel Galaxy fans deserve something a little more impressive than this particular Fan Edition.
