SAP announces Databricks partnership to power AI with Business Data Cloud - SiliconANGLE
SAP announces Databricks partnership to power AI with Business Data Cloud Enterprise software giant SAP SE today debuted the Business Data Cloud, a new data solution that unifies all SAP data and third-party data throughout an organization to provide a foundation for insights and artificial intelligence applications. The company also announced a partnership with enterprise data processing and AI company Databricks Inc. The collaboration natively embeds Databrick's technology for data engineering, machine learning and AI workloads into SAP's cloud solution. Muhammad Alam, head of product engineering at SAP, said the solution brings with it a new product economy that allows businesses greater control over their information and allows them to apply it to organizations. "When data is disconnected from the source application, you simply cannot have good reliable AI," Alam said. Everything that happens within a business is interconnected and businesses spend millions of dollars attempting to harmonize it, and that's what Business Data Cloud helps solve. Within BDC customers gain access to data products. What are data products? They are semantically rich data that come from all SAP applications that are managed by the company out-of-the-box and designed for a specific industry use case so that they can be applied directly to maintain an original business context without requiring a costly business extraction process. For example, if a chief financial officer wants to look at the impact of tariffs or a regional change in pricing on profitability, Business Data Cloud could integrate real-time external data such as consumer price indexes with financial data products such as general ledger accounts or cost centers and generate a financial snapshot. "The BDC is a big deal because it evolves the notion of SAP data, and then it lets those AI use cases start consuming the data," Irfan Khan, SAP's president and chief product officer of data and analytics, told SiliconANGLE in an interview. Data within BDC will take advantage of zero-copy capability, Khan explained, which enables faster feature engineering and helps with the data-to-model pipeline by accelerating the iterative process of training and refining AI models. The solution handles the ongoing management and updates of data products, reducing the burden on information technology and data engineering teams for extraction, cleansing and curation. "So, if I was to use sort of a gasoline kind of analogy here, you can end up with regular gas, and maybe mid-range gas, and then you have high-octane premium gas," Khan said. "So, I would argue, SAP data is definitely premium, high-octane gas." Business Data Cloud will incorporate SAP Datasphere. The platform was launched in 2023 and was designed as the next-generation of the older SAP Data Warehouse Cloud. Datasphere acts as a platform-as-a-service fabric to connect, harmonize and distribute SAP and non-SAP data sources for customer applications, something that BDC does at its core. Khan said that current Datasphere customers will be migrated effortlessly and it will not change their operations. Business users can take this managed data from SAP in combination with Databricks into their applications directly and it will also be used to supercharge Joule, SAP's generative AI copilot. As part of today's announcement, SAP unveiled a series of ready-to-use Joule agents. These AI agents can take action, make decisions and use tools with little or no human oversight across finance, sales and more industries across the SAP Business Suite. For example, in finance, multiple agents can work together to process claims faster and improve business cash flow. Multiple Jules sales agents can operate in tandem to resolve disputes and answer simple customer inquiries. For use cases that out-of-the-box AI agents do not currently handle, SAP announced a new agent builder. With the builder capability, customers can tailor their own AI agents using the most relevant data and business context to handle guided workflows.

SAP Sets Databricks Alliance, Launches Business Data Cloud
The new data management system incorporating Databricks data engineering and AI capabilities is targeted at improving business access to data for analytical, digital transformation and AI initiatives. SAP today unveiled SAP Business Data Cloud, the latest generation of the software giant's data management platform for unifying data, both from SAP applications and third-party systems, for analytical and AI tasks. In addition to incorporating - and building on - current SAP products including Business Warehouse, Datasphere and Analytics Cloud, Business Data Cloud offers natively embedded data engineering, AI and machine learning technology through a new OEM deal with Databricks. Business Data Cloud includes new capabilities and pre-built content including packaged data products derived from SAP applications and what the company calls "insight applications" that use that data and AI models connected to real-time data for advanced analytics and planning across lines of business such as finance and human resource management. [Related: SAP 'Supercharging' Joule AI Copilot With New Agent Capabilities] The new data platform also boosts the operation of Joule, SAP's AI copilot that launched in September 2023, for cross-functional workflows and business decision-making. SAP also debuted a series of ready-to-use Joule agents that work with SAP finance, service and sales applications, and new AI agent builder capabilities that allow customers to extend Joule agents and build and deploy their own AI agents. A key component of SAP's agent infrastructure is the company's Knowledge Graph data modeling technology, which SAP debuted one year ago, that semantically understands relationships across data sets and makes it possible to discover insights and patterns across applications and systems. "AI has the potential to create exponential value for organizations around the world, whether that's in the form of automating tasks that require a significant amount of human engagement today or, in some cases, doing tasks that just couldn't be done or weren't practical to be done by any amount of human engagement in the past. Or also to provide the insights with predictive capabilities with next best action recommendations to allow for better, more efficient decision making," said Muhammad Alam, SAP head of product engineering, during an online press briefing Wednesday. "But what our customers are telling us is that they're struggling to implement and realize the value of AI in their organizations," Alam said. "It's hard to get reliable data, high-quality data sets across the enterprise, to power this AI. Many have done hundreds of [proof of concepts] but have not been able to get them to production effectively. And the ones that have been able to get to production haven't really seen the adoption that they're looking for to be able to realize the value." SAP is uniquely positioned to provide these capabilities, Alam said, because of the company's business applications that create data used for data analytics and AI models, which in turn support business processes and workflows that benefit from AI and analytical results. SAP, like many IT companies, earlier integrated its software with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. But Alam escribed the new alliance as a "truly one-of-kind partnership in the tech space." During the online press conference Irfan Khan, chief product officer for SAP data and analytics, noted that many SAP and Databricks customers already use both companies' products. "Most companies today already have a data strategy in place," said Daniel Yu, chief marketing officer for SAP data and analytics, in an interview with CRN. They have assembled data warehouses and data lakes surrounded by data governance policies, he said, and now they are trying to leverage those systems for digital transformation and AI initiatives. But Yu said these efforts have created "what we call the data divide, the disconnect between the large investment that [organizations] have made in data platforms and the data that companies need to be able to run their business...this is between IT and the business users." Yu said that the SAP Business Data Cloud is designed to bridge this divide with its pre-built data content, embedded Databricks capabilities, and SAP's existing Datasphere, Analytics Cloud and Business Warehouse systems. He emphasized Business Data Cloud's ability to incorporate data from SAP and non-SAP systems from both cloud and on-premises sources. "Every company on the planet wants to get more value out of their data and greater returns on their AI investments," said Ali Ghodsi, Databricks co-founder and CEO, in a statement announcing SAP Business Data Cloud. "By joining forces with SAP, we're helping organizations bring together all their data - regardless of format or where it lives - to govern, analyze and build domain-specific AI applications on the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform." For partners, Yu said Business Data Cloud will make it easier for systems integrators and solution providers to build and deliver data solutions to their customers and develop data-centric applications that run on the new system. Datasphere is SAP's platform-as-a-service data fabric offering for building data pipelines. When asked during the online press conference about Datasphere's future, SAP executives acknowledged that Datasphere is "evolving" into Business Data Cloud. Business Data Cloud will initially be available on the Amazon Web Services platform followed closely by availability on Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure.

SAP taps Databricks to enhance AI readiness with new Business Data Cloud
Join our daily and weekly newsletters for the latest updates and exclusive content on industry-leading AI coverage. Learn More German software giant SAP is pushing the bar on the data front to power next-gen AI use cases. The company today introduced Business Data Cloud (BDC), a new SaaS product that embraces lakehouse architecture to help teams enrich their SAP ecosystem data with external data assets from different source systems and drive long-term value. The product is the outcome of a landmark collaboration with data ecosystem major Databricks. Essentially, SAP BDC natively integrates capabilities and data from Databricks' data intelligence platform. This removes the need for creating and maintaining complex pipelines and creates a harmonized data foundation for advanced AI agents and analytical workloads. Several enterprises, including Henkel, are using BDC to power their AI projects. SAP itself is using the enriched BDC to power a new era of Joule agents focused on specific domains like finance, service and sales. The development makes SAP another notable player, much like Microsoft and Salesforce, bolstering its data platform to lay down the foundation for AI. SAP's revamped data foundation Over the years, SAP has established itself as one of the leading players in enterprise resource planning (ERP) with S4/HANA cloud and several mission-critical applications for finance, supply chain and human capital management. These apps produce petabyte-scale data with business context and have been powering AI and analytical value for teams, via the company's business technology platform (BTP). So far, SAP BTP has had a 'datasphere' that allows enterprises to connect data from SAP with information from non-SAP systems and eventually link it with SAP analytics cloud and other internal tools for downstream applications. Now, the company is evolving this experience into the unified BDC, natively powered by Databricks. What SAP business data cloud has on offer What this means is that SAP is embracing lakehouse architecture, creating a unified foundation that combines all SAP data products -- from finance, spend and supply chain data in SAP S/4HANA and SAP Ariba, to learning and talent data in SAP SuccessFactors -- with structured and unstructured data from other varied yet business-critical systems, stored in Databricks. Once the data is unified (via zero-copy, bi-directional sharing), SAP BDC can leverage Databricks-specific capabilities for workloads like data warehousing, data engineering and AI, all governed by Databricks unity catalog. "We take all of these different data products, which are provisioned and managed by SAP...and we will persist them into the lakehouse of SAP business data cloud, in a harmonized data model," Irfan Khan, president and CPO for SAP data and analytics, told VentureBeat. "This lakehouse will have Databricks capabilities for users to build upon." Previously, said Khan, users who had a large percentage of their data in Databricks and SAP data in S4 or BW had to build and manage complex pipelines and replicate all the data assets to the SAP platform while rebuilding the entire semantics and the core data model at the same time. The approach took time and required them to keep their pipelines updated with changing data. However, with Databricks' native integration, users have access to everything in one place and can directly do data engineering, data science and other tasks on top of the BDC. "In Datasphere, you had a means of doing a similar thing, but they were all customer-managed data products," Khan explained. "So, you had to go into the data platform, select the data sources and build the data pipelines. Then, you had to figure out what to replicate. Here, it's all managed by SAP." What this means for enterprises At its core, this Databricks-powered product gives teams a faster, simpler way to unify and mobilize their business data assets locked within SAP and Databricks environments. The combined, semantically-enhanced data will pave the way for building next-gen AI applications aimed at different use cases. For instance, a team could use Databricks' Mosaic AI capabilities to develop domain-specific AI agents that could use context from SAP's business data as well as external Databricks-specific data to automate certain human capital management or supply chain functions. Notably, SAP itself is tapping this enhanced data foundation to power ready-to-use Joule agents aimed at automating tasks and accelerating workflows across sales, service and finance functions. These agents deeply understand end-to-end processes and collaborate to solve complex business problems. Beyond this, BDC will have an "insight apps" capability, which will allow users to connect their data products and AI models with external real-time data to deliver advanced analytics and planning across business functions. More data partners to come While the partnership underscores a big move for both Databricks and SAP, it is important to note that the Ali Ghodsi-led data major won't be the only one bolstering BDC. According to Khan, data sharing and ecosystem openness are the company's first design principles -- and they will expand to other data platforms through their partner connect capabilities. This means an enterprise user will be able to choose the platform they prefer (or that they are locked into) and bi-directionally share data for targeted use cases.
