The government executed 1.4 trillion won ($952.7 million) in budget to bring in 13,000 GPUs from Nvidia, according to the Ministry of Science and ICT and other sources. The shipment reportedly contains multiple GPU models, including Nvidia's latest B200. A GPU is a high-performance semiconductor chip designed to handle many calculations simultaneously and is widely used to train and run AI models. The government plans to allocate the GPUs to universities, research institutes, startups and public-sector organizations. The project follows Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang's announcement in late October that the company would deploy 260,000 GPUs to Korea in partnership with the government and major companies, including Samsung Electronics, to build large-scale AI factories in the country. Under the plan, the government will use 50,000 GPUs to build a national sovereign AI platform, while Samsung Electronics, SK Group and Hyundai Motor Group are each set to receive 50,000 units. Naver will receive 60,000.

The inaugural meeting of the group, chaired by Second Vice Science Minister Ryu Je-myung, comes about a month after Nvidia announced a plan to supply up to 260,000 Blackwell GPUs to the Korean government and leading conglomerates. At the meeting, senior executives from Samsung, Hyundai, as well as SK Telecom and Naver Cloud, discussed implementation strategies for the GPU plan and ways to expand cooperation to strengthen the country's AI ecosystem. Participants agreed to maintain a standing coordination system through the new working group, which will be convened regularly. Nvidia announced last month the plan to deploy up to 260,000 GPUs in Korea in partnership with the government and major companies to build large-scale AI factories in the country. The company said the Blackwell-based infrastructure will boost Korea's total installed AI GPU capacity from about 65,000 to more than 300,000 units, positioning the country as one of the world's largest hubs for AI computing outside the United States.

The group held its inaugural meeting this week, the report said. The Yonhap report comes a month after Nvidia said it will deploy up to 260,000 GPUs in South Korea as part of a government deal. The deployment, if successful, stands to make South Korea one of the largest AI processing hubs outside the United States.
