Spotify Enhances AI DJ with Text Input and Spanish Language Support

Spotify on Wednesday upgraded its AI DJ feature -- available to Premium subscribers -- with a handful of new features, including the ability to send in your requests by typing, not just using voice commands. The feature works with both English and Spanish requests, as Spotify's Spanish-language DJ, called DJ Livi, now accepts music requests. The AI DJ feature was updated earlier this year to accept voice requests, instead of only playing tunes Spotify thinks that you'll like. However, that feature was only available to the English-language AI DJ until today. Texting with an AI assistant is now a common behavior, thanks to the rising popularity of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. These services allow for multi-modal inputs, meaning you can either talk, text, or upload images and files as part of your request. As more people have gotten used to shifting back and forth between input methods, Apple rolled out a version of its Siri assistant that can also be reached by text. It's a natural next step for Spotify's AI feature to accept text input, as well, given that users are often engaged with the streaming service when out and about, commuting, or in a quiet space where they don't want to disturb others by issuing voice commands. In addition to the new texting feature, Spotify says that the AI DJ will also now offer personalized prompt suggestions to help inspire you if you're not sure what you want to listen to next. To access the DJ, you simply search for the term "DJ" on Spotify and then press play to start your curated selection of music. If you want to change the music, you can tap the DJ button in the bottom-right of the screen, then offer your suggestion via voice or text. Spotify notes the DJ can handle requests that combine genre, mood, artist, or activity. The feature is currently live in English and Spanish in over 60 markets worldwide.

At $12 a month, Spotify is the largest music streaming service with over 100 million tracks and, in addition to the DJ, also includes features such as free audiobooks and the yearly Spotify Wrapped.

So it's no surprise that Spotify would add a similar ability for its AI DJ to accept text inputs, which might keep listeners engaged with the platform. Especially as most people are likely using Spotify when they're out and about and likely don't always want to use voice commands. Alongside the new texting tools, Spotify is also adding new personalized prompt suggestions based on your listening habits. You'll see offers like "refreshing surf rock for a midday break" or "reggaeton beats for an energetic afternoon" if you're unsure where to start. If you're a Premium subscriber you can access the DJ by searching for "DJ" or "DJ Livi" on Spotify. Once it pops up, you just press play on the curated selection of music. To change the music or enter a prompt, hold the DJ button on the bottom-right of the screen and you'll be able to offer a voice or text suggestion. Spotify notes that the DJ can handle requests that combine moods, genre, artists or activities. I tried it on my partner's Spotify account and I was able to get the voice command to work but texting does not seem available yet at time of publication. They offer a new way to curate a DJ listening session, but other in-app features are overshadowing it Despite its divisive nature, there's no denying that AI DJ is one of the most used and most popular features in Spotify's ecosystem of music tools, and the company is taking more measures to expand its capabilities. Spotify is rolling out a slew of new features to AI DJ, giving Premium subscribers 'a new way to curate the vibe of their listening session in real-time', as per the company's announcement. This marks the second biggest upgrade for AI DJ - the first being the music requests tool back in May, which allows you to interact with DJ and request to update your listening session based on the music you want to hear at that moment. According to Spotify's announcement, the platform has seen a resurgence in AI DJ listeners since rolling out the requests function. Given this increase, it was only a matter of time before new functions would arrive for AI DJ - it's true to Spotify's style after all. As well as bringing the music request function to DJ's Spanish version, DJ Livi, there are two new changes coming to the English edition of Spotify's resident maestro. For the first time, subscribers will be able to choose from personalized prompts when making a request to DJ, which would come in handy for when you need a little inspiration boost when choosing what to listen to in the moment. When you want to make a request, you can choose from three personalized prompts to get your DJ session started, with each one offering its own genre and listening vibe. You could choose, for example, 'upbeat music that will help me romanticize my day job', or 'chill music to stare into the void'. As well as using your voice to interact with DJ, you now have the option to type out your requests, which was the most asked-for feature according to Spotify. This gives you more options within DJ and can be used in both English and Spanish, but where it will come the most helpful is when you want to make a request while commuting or are in busier environments, and want to refrain from speaking your prompts aloud. It's great to see Spotify building on its biggest features and finding fresh ways to tailor its different in-app experiences to suit the requests of music fans. While these new touches add some value to AI DJ, Spotify should focus on DJ's performance. One of the downsides to AI DJ that users can't get past is the repetitive song playback. AI DJ prides itself on its ability to generate a hybrid playback session of regular favorites and new music discoveries, but it seems to be stuck on the former, and I find that it's very heavy on giving me songs that are already on my radar. Spotify has yet to fix this, and as a result, other features are stealing the spotlight - it's the new audio mixing tool that I'm still hooked on. Now that Spotify Wrapped is almost upon us, the company is nearing a new year, and with a new CEO now in place, I'm hoping for some exciting but worthwhile changes for the platform's ecosystem.

Today, Spotify has improved the AI DJ feature and added something I (and I'm sure tons of other people) have personally been waiting for. You can now text Spotify's AI DJ your music requests As announced via a post on Spotify's For the Record blog, you can now send text-based requests to the AI DJ. With this feature, you can let the DJ know exactly what music you'd like to listen to or ask it to play a certain genre, mood, or even an artist you've been really into lately. Spotify claims this was among the most-requested features on social media platforms, so it's refreshing to see the company finally make it happen. Earlier this year, in May, the company announced that the DJ could take music requests via voice. While it was a great addition and made the feature feel a lot more personal, speaking up and giving a command isn't always convenient, especially when you're in a quiet place. For instance, I often use the AI DJ feature to listen to music when I'm in a classroom, and asking it to play something out loud isn't exactly ideal. The only option I tend to have is to either keep skipping tracks until it finally lands on one I like (which defeats the purpose of the feature) or simply listen to one of my own playlists instead. Starting today, you can type music requests in both English and Spanish. In addition to typing your own requests, the DJ now also offers three personalized prompt suggestions. These are essentially prompts you can use to quickly set the vibe, whether you're in the mood for something upbeat, relaxed, or totally different from your usual listens. The process of sending the AI DJ a text-based request is the same as giving a voice command. All you need to do is open the DJ feature by either heading to the Search tab at the bottom and searching for DJ or tapping the DJ playlist. Then, simply tap the DJ button in the bottom-right corner and type what you want to hear instead of saying it out loud. DJ is a feature that's only available to Spotify Premium subscribers in 60 regions, meaning this update will also be limited to users in those markets for now.
