Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud announces the second edition of the Supreme Court's hackathon, emphasizing the use of Artificial Intelligence to streamline court functioning and improve access to justice.
The Supreme Court of India is set to host its second hackathon, marking a significant step towards integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the judicial system. Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud announced the event, highlighting the court's commitment to leveraging technology for enhancing judicial processes 1.
The hackathon aims to develop AI tools that can streamline court functioning and improve access to justice. Key focus areas include:
CJI Chandrachud emphasized that AI would not replace judges but rather assist them in their work, potentially reducing pendency and enhancing efficiency 3.
The hackathon is open to students, startups, and IT professionals. It will be conducted in two phases:
Participants are encouraged to develop innovative AI solutions that can be practically implemented in the judicial system.
The first edition of the Supreme Court's hackathon, held in 2023, focused on institutionalizing digital innovations. It resulted in the successful launch of the 'Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software' (SUVAS), which translates judgments into vernacular languages 2.
This second hackathon represents a continued effort to modernize the Indian judiciary. By embracing AI, the Supreme Court aims to address longstanding issues such as case backlogs and improve overall judicial efficiency 1.
While the integration of AI in the judiciary presents numerous opportunities, it also raises important questions about data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the ethical use of technology in legal decision-making. The hackathon may serve as a platform to address these concerns and develop responsible AI solutions 3.
As the Indian judiciary takes this innovative step, it joins a global trend of courts exploring AI to enhance their operations. The outcomes of this hackathon could potentially set precedents for the future of AI in legal systems worldwide.
