UIDAI, Sarvam AI Partner to Bring AI Voice and Fraud Detection to Aadhar in 10 Indic Languages
Sarvam AI's AI stack will be hosted on-premise within UIDAI's air-gapped infrastructure, ensuring that no data leaves its secure environment. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has joined forces with Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, to improve the user experience for Aadhaar services, reported PTI. According to the announcements, starting March 18, Sarvam AI will deploy AI-powered voice-based interactions to enhance resident-centric use cases. This will enable near real-time feedback from Aadhaar holders regarding their enrollment and update experiences, including any incidents of overcharging. "UIDAI is a people-centric organisation. GenAI is the next technology evolution in UIDAI's journey as a technology pioneer, building on our long-standing commitment to innovation for facilitating ease of living," said Bhuvnesh Kumar, CEO, UIDAI. Furthermore, Sarvam's AI system will also introduce real-time fraud alerts, notifying Aadhaar holders if any suspicious activity is detected during authentication requests, thereby strengthening security. Acknowledging India's linguistic diversity, the AI solution will support voice interactions and fraud detection in 10 languages, including Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, and Malayalam. More languages will be added in the coming months. "We are privileged to collaborate with UIDAI. This engagement exemplifies the immense potential of AI to drive public good," said Vivek Raghavan, co-founder of Sarvam AI. Sarvam AI's custom generative AI stack will be hosted on-premise within UIDAI's air-gapped infrastructure, ensuring that no data leaves its secure environment. This guarantees compliance with data sovereignty and security protocols. The agreement is initially valid for one year, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The solution was developed under UIDAI's volunteer policy, allowing industry collaboration. Sarvam AI's team worked closely with UIDAI's Technology Centre in Bengaluru to develop and deploy the AI system, with UIDAI retaining full ownership. In January, Ashwini Vaishnaw, union minister of Railways and Information & Broadcasting, Electronics and Information Technology, posted on X that he discussed with the Sarvam AI team about options for building India's sovereign LLM. AIM found that Sarvam AI is also one of the startups that has applied for the proposal under the IndiaAI Mission to build India's sovereign LLMs. This is after NITI Aayog signed a Statement of Intent with Sarvam AI in December last year to build a pilot for an Enterprise Reasoning Engine (ERE) atop the National Data and Analytics Portal (NDAP).

On the same day, Sarvam AI announced the launch of Sarvam Labs, a research initiative in the Bay Area, San Francisco. The lab will focus on foundational AI research for Indic languages. This comes as the startup is planning to submit a proposal to the electronics and IT ministry (MeitY) to build an indigenous AI foundational model under the IndiaAI Mission. Founded in 2023 by Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, Sarvam AI has raised $41 Mn (around INR 342 Cr) in its Series A funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, in participation with Peak XV Partners and Khosla Ventures, in December 2023. Since then, the startup has launched small language models (SLMs). Earlier, the startup claimed to have launched India's first open source foundational SLM, Sarvam 2B, focussed on Indic languages. The startup claims that it is trained with 4 Tn tokens and performs better than Meta's Llama in Indian language. Prior to that, Sarvam AI launched Shuka 1.0, which it said was India's first open source audioLM, which can mimic or continue the audio input given - be it a musical beat or a particular language. However, it was an extension on the Llama 8B model.
