MUMBAI: The Pune Expressway is set to introduce AI-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) starting Friday. This system, the first of its kind in Maharashtra, harnesses the power of artificial intelligence and data analytics to streamline vehicle flow and bolster road safety. The advanced technology enables automatic detection of various traffic violations, ensuring a safer and more efficient driving experience for commuters.The RTO will monitor the system from the control room at Lonavala. One of the key features of the ITMS is its ability to automatically recognize vehicle number plates, empowering the police to issue e-challans for traffic infractions. This automated process will not only deter potential violators but also facilitate swift and effective enforcement of traffic regulations. Moreover, the system will significantly reduce the occurrence of prolonged traffic congestion caused by disabled vehicles, as it can promptly identify and report such incidents to the control room. Currently, response times to these situations can surpass an hour, leading to substantial delays and inconvenience for motorists. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a vital transportation artery, experiences an average daily traffic volume of up to 40,000 vehicles, surging to 60,000 on weekends. To effectively monitor and manage this substantial traffic flow, the ITMS will deploy more than 200 AI-enabled CCTV cameras mounted on gantries strategically positioned along the 95-kilometer stretch of the Expressway. These sophisticated cameras possess the capability to detect up to 17 different types of traffic violations, ensuring comprehensive surveillance and enforcement. The implementation of the AI-powered ITMS on the Pune Expressway comes in the wake of a tragic accident earlier this week, where at least five individuals lost their lives, and 42 others sustained injuries when a bus carrying pilgrims collided with a tractor.
