AMD Confirms Ryzen AI MAX 300 Series

AMD has officially confirmed the existence of its upcoming Ryzen AI MAX 300 series, also known by the codename "Strix Halo," through the release of its latest chipset driver. This confirmation came to light when hardware leaker @9550pro (HXL) discovered mentions of the new series in the release notes of AMD chipset driver v6.10.02.1849, available on ASUS's official website for X670E motherboards 1.

Advanced APU Architecture

The Ryzen AI MAX 300 series represents AMD's most powerful Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) to date. These chips are designed to integrate high-performance CPU cores with advanced graphics capabilities:

  • CPU: Up to 16 Zen 5 cores
  • GPU: Up to 40 Compute Units based on RDNA 3.5 architecture
  • Memory: Support for up to 128GB of RAM 2

Chiplet Design and Performance

The Strix Halo APUs are rumored to feature a sophisticated chiplet design:

  • Three chiplets: Two CCDs (CPU Complex Dies) and one large SoC die
  • SoC die includes a 40 CU iGPU clocked at 3 GHz
  • 32MB of MALL (Memory Access at Last Level) cache
  • Eight LPPDR5X-8533 memory modules, possibly indicating a 256-bit memory interface 2

AI Acceleration and Connectivity

To meet Microsoft's AI PC requirements, the Ryzen AI MAX 300 series will incorporate AMD's XDNA2 architecture for its Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The chips are also expected to offer:

  • Four PCIe 5.0 lanes
  • Eight PCIe 4.0 lanes
  • Two USB 4.0 ports
  • Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports 2

Product Lineup

According to leaks, the Ryzen AI MAX 300 series may include three models:

  1. Ryzen AI MAX 395: 16 CPU cores, 40 GPU compute units
  2. Ryzen AI MAX 390: 12 CPU cores, 40 GPU compute units
  3. Ryzen AI MAX 385: 8 CPU cores, 32 GPU compute units 3

Target Market and Applications

The Ryzen AI MAX 300 series is aimed at high-performance computing needs, particularly in the laptop market. These APUs are designed for:

  • Workstations
  • Premium top-of-the-line laptops
  • Gaming systems without the need for dedicated GPUs in some cases 1

Future Outlook

AMD is expected to officially unveil the Ryzen AI MAX 300 series at CES 2025, alongside some Ryzen 9000X3D CPUs. The company is also planning to release more affordable Zen 5-based chips, such as Krackan Point and Z2 Extreme, in early 2025 for gaming handhelds 1.
