As usual, this MacOS update brings some new features as well as some fixes and upgrades to existing ones. But, as MacOS Sequoia is the first with Apple Intelligence, the new features that come with MacOS Sequoia 15.2 mostly involve new additions to Apple's own AI model. So, what's new in MacOS Sequoia 15.2? Here are the biggest new features. If you have a Mac powered by Apple's Silicon chipset, the new Apple Intelligence features are by far the biggest new releases in MacOS Sequoia 15.2. The latest MacOS update brings Image Playground to Mac. Image Playground allows users to generate AI-generated images with text prompts. Apple lets users choose from animation or illustration styles and images can be created in existing Mac apps like Messages and Freeform for direct usage in those applications. The new MacOS Sequoia 15.2 also brings OpenAI's ChatGPT directly to Mac via a direct Apple intelligence integration. ChatGPT can be accessed through Siri or Writing Tools. Users don't need a ChatGPT account to use ChatGPT via Apple Intelligence. Mac users will be able to anonymously make ChatGPT requests and their data won't be used to train OpenAI's models. ChatGPT users can login to their account if they'd like to though to take advantages of their account benefits. Apple has one more addition to Apple Intelligence with MacOS Sequoia 15.2. Users can now tell Writing Tools exactly how they want a text document rewritten. For example, if a user writes a paragraph but wants it rewritten into a poem, the user can just tell Apple Intelligence that they want it to be rewritten as poetry. If your Mac is powered by Apple silicon instead of Intel chips, it can run Apple Intelligence. macOS Sequoia 15.2 expands upon the initial Apple Intelligence features that dropped in September alongside macOS Sequoia 15.0. Though still restricted to English, Apple Intelligence in macOS Sequoia 15.2 brings English language support to Mac owners in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. In 2025, Apple Intelligence will support Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish, and other languages. The Writing Tools now let you create writings from scratch with a new Compose feature that can tap into ChatGPT from OpenAI. As a matter of fact, the Siri assistant in macOS Sequoia 15.2 also allows you to access ChatGTP for complex requests which cannot be resolved on-device and require the power of the cloud. As part of Apple's focus on user privacy, you must manually approve whenever you want to hand off your Siri request to ChatGPT. An OpenAI account isn't required to use this functionality. However, you can sign in with a ChatGPT account if you have one, in order to access paid features from within Siri. When it comes to AI image creation, macOS Sequoia 15.12 brings a new Image Playground app for creating visuals from brief descriptions. You can also select a contact image as a basis for Image Playground, use suggestions to quickly generate images, swipe through quick previews, access a history of your requests, and more. Moreover, Image Playground capabilities can be accessed from other stock apps, including Messages. The Notes app brings a pretty interesting feature, Image Wand. Just circle a rough sketch in Notes to give it some Image Playground magic and turn it into a proper drawing. You can also circle an empty area in your note, which will cause Image Wand to create an image from scratch using nothing but the surrounding context. However, macOS Sequoia 15.2 lacks one Apple Intelligence capability from iOS 18.2: Visual Intelligence, a Google Lens-like feature which only works on the latest iPhone 16 family. macOS Sequoia 15.2 includes a few non-AI tweaks and changes as well. The Find My app, for example, permits you to temporarily share the location of your AirTag (or a compatible third-party item) with another person (and soon your airline) using links. The Voice Memos app gains the ability to layer recordings and edit layer mixes. The iPhone Mirroring feature works even while your Mac uses your iPhone's Personal Hotspot feature. If you're an Apple News+ subscriber, you can now play daily sudoku puzzles in the News app. You can set the weather forecast from Apple's built-in Weather app to show in the macOS menu bar. When AirPlaying to your Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled television, you can restrict your AirPlay session to a specific window or app instead of sharing everything on the screen (useful when presenting something). You can now customize the TV app's navigation bar by dragging sidebar options like Recently Added, Recent Purchases, Movies, TV Shows, and more. Unfortunately, Mac owners who are not into soccer cannot remove the built-in MLS shortcut from the sidebar. On the other hand, sports fans will appreciate that the SharePlay co-watching experience in the TV app now includes sports programming to enjoy live sports with friends and family over FaceTime. You can also swipe through multiple trailers for the same show or movie and add the title to your watchlist by hitting the + (plus) button on trailers. The new macOS Sequoia 15.2 introduces Image Playground with Apple Intelligence Apple has released macOS Sequoia 15.2, which brings with it a raft of Apple Intelligence features, chiefly to do with images, but also adding features to Siri and Mail. After months of beta tests, macOS Sequoia 15.2 is now rolling out worldwide. It's the new current version of the Mac's operating system and will come preinstalled on all new Macs. It's a much more significant release than its single-digit point update from 15.1 to 15.2 would appear. Unlike most years when such an update is chiefly a bug fix or might introduce one new feature like Freeform, macOS 15.2 is instead the next step in Apple Intelligence. Most prominently, this update brings Apple Intelligence image tools to Mac users. There's the new Image Playground in which users can describe an image and, within important limits, Apple Intelligence will create what they ask for. Image Playground is a separate tool, but there are now two Apple Intelligence tools that are features within existing and very well-used apps. In Notes, there is now the Image Wand, which can turn sketches into fuller, richer images -- or generate an image based on what users have written in a Note. Then in Messages, there's now Genmoji. Rather than sending standard emoji, users can now describe one, and Genmoji will create it for them. This can incorporate people and other subjects from your photo library, something which Image Playground can also do. The resulting image is then handled like a regular emoji in Messages. Owners of the iPhone 16 will be able to take advantage of Visual Intelligence, a feature triggered by the Camera Control. It's capable of summarizing and copying text caught by the camera, translations, detecting and using phone numbers and email addresses, and even Google image searches. Apple Intelligence's Writing Tools have been updated with more options. Specifically, users can now describe how they want their text to be rewritten. So rather than solely using the options to make text more friendly, more professional, or more concise, users could say "Silly," "like a thriller," or "poetry." This Writing Tool feature will sometimes simply say it can't create what has been asked for, but sometimes it will instead offer to send the text and the instruction to ChatGPT. That's the next major addition in macOS 15.2, the integration between Siri and ChatGPT. Siri always asks permission to send users' writing to ChatGPT, and it never lets that AI service retain the writing for training. One last significant update that may take a little time to notice, is Apple Mail's categorization of emails. Even on the beta version of 15.2, this wasn't always visible, but over time it should learn what sorts of email a user receives, and sort them into types. The Apple Intelligence features will also be used by a larger audience, beyond U.S. English users. It will also work when the language setting is English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. This release is expected to be followed in January 2025 by macOS 15.3. There may not be any major new features, however, until macOS Sequoia 15.4 in March 2025. Recent reports claim that a further improvement to Siri won't arrive until 2026. AI Image Generation With Image Playground Mac models powered by Apple silicon chips (from the M1 up) have gained new Apple Intelligence capabilities with macOS Sequoia 15.2, including AI image generation via a new app, called Image Playground. With it, Mac owners can easily generate images in multiple styles using on-device AI processing, based on short descriptions. Image Playground is both a standalone app and a system service available from within Apple apps like Messages and Freeform, as well as third-party apps. ChatGPT in Siri and Writing Tools ChatGPT is now integrated into Siri and Writing Tools. If a request is too complex to resolve on-device, Siri offers to offload it to OpenAI's models in the cloud. No identifiable information is sent, and OpenAI is not permitted to use your ChatGPT interactions for model training. You can also sign in with your OpenAI account to access premium ChatGPT features (but you'll lose anonymity that way). In Writing Tools, the ChatGPT engine allows you to create writing from scratch, based on a prompt, or rewrite something in a specific style (like a poem, for example). However, Genmoji is currently unavailable on Mac computers even though the feature has arrived for iPhone and iPad with iOS and iPadOS 18.2. Genmoji enables you to create a custom emoji character with a prompt like "smiley relaxing wearing cucumbers," (yes, really). According to Apple, Genmoji will be available on the Mac "in the coming months." In addition, other Apple Intelligence features -- priority notifications and a new sketch style in Image Playground -- have been delayed across iPhone, iPad, and Mac until early 2025. If you don't care about Apple Intelligence, that's fine because macOS Sequoia 15.2 brings several noteworthy under-the-hood changes you may like better than generative AI. Weather in the Status Bar Sequoia's Weather app can put weather forecasts for your saved locations in the status bar, and you can click through for detailed information. To turn it on, go to System Settings > Control Center, scroll down, click the menu next to "Weather," and choose "Show in Menu Bar." AirPlay to a Single Window or App AirPlay, Apple's device-to-device media sharing technology, can now show only a single window or an app. This increases privacy when publicly presenting, as your audience only sees what you want instead of mirroring the whole Mac display. Just initiate AirPlay or connect an external display to your Mac to see a new presenter preview window, where you can choose whether to share an app or window or your whole screen. Natural Language Search in Music and TV Apps Natural language search is available in the Music and TV apps. Instead of typing keywords, natural language search allows you to describe when you want the same way you'd say it to a friend using any combination of categories like genres, moods, actors, decades, etc. Some examples include "artists similar to Weeknd," "songs about food," "sad movies," "movies about alien invasions." Give it a try and see what you can come up with! New Safari Wallpapers and Other Tweaks Safari includes new background images for your Start page. To check them out, create a new tab and click the Edit button in the bottom-right corner. In a privacy boost, the browser will try to upgrade web addresses to the secure HTTPS protocol whenever possible. Apple has also updated import and export for your Safari history, bookmarks, and passwords to be easier to use. To try this out, click "Import Browsing Data from File or Folder" or "Export Browsing Data to File" from Safari's File menu. Sharing AirTag Locations via Links The Find My app on macOS Sequoia 15.2 supports sharing locations of your AirTags or compatible third-party trackers via links. This is useful if you'd like a friend to assist you with finding your lost keys or similar. Anyone with a link can see the location of your item on a map. The location stops sharing as soon as you've found the item or after a week. Apple has even partnered with dozens of global airlines on this capability, so you'll soon be able to share the location of mishandled luggage with your airline. In the Photos app, the built-in Favorites album now shows up in the Utilities collection in addition to the Pinned Collections one. For a bit more privacy, you can now clear your Recently Viewed and Recently Shared album history in the Photos app. The built-in Podcasts app has a new Favorite Categories section where you can tell it which shows you prefer to receive better personalized recommendations. Apple News+ subscribers can play daily Sudoku puzzles in the News app in three difficulty levels. Install macOS Sequoia 15.2 Now If you haven't already installed the update, head over to System Settings > General > Software Update and click the "Update Now" button. Depending on your Mac, the update could take around 20 minutes to complete (after the download). macOS 15.2 is compatible with the same Mac models that macOS Sequoia launched on. It's always a good idea to perform a Time Machine backup before installing major software updates like this, just in case something goes wrong (no, an iCloud backup isn't the same thing). Even though macOS Sequoia 15.2 isn't as feature-packed as iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, it's the little tweaks like the weather forecast in the status bar that made a difference to me. Apple is already testing macOS Sequoia 15.3, so there will be more goodies coming before the next major beta cycle restarts with macOS 16, iOS 19, and more in the summer of 2025.

Mac users can download the macOS Sequoia update through the Software Update section of System Settings. macOS Sequoia 15.2 adds Image Playground, an app that lets you create images based on text descriptions. You can type in whatever you like, but Apple will suggest costumes, locations, and items that you can add to an image. You can generate images that resemble your friend and family, and you can choose a photo for Image Playground to use as inspiration. The update also adds ChatGPT integration to Siri, which is an opt-in feature. When enabled, Siri is able to hand complicated requests over to OpenAI's ChatGPT. Siri ChatGPT can essentially do much of what the dedicated ChatGPT app can do, but with the convenience of using Siri instead of a third-party app. ChatGPT can generate text and realistic looking images from scratch, which isn't possible with Apple Intelligence, and it can tell you what you're looking at on your screen using a screenshot. macOS Sequoia 15.2 also adds new features to Photos and Safari, with Apple's release notes for the update available below.
