Apple's AI might just be getting a Google-powered upgrade
Summary The iOS 18.4 beta hints at Apple Intelligence supporting both Google and OpenAI, sparking speculation that Gemini could boost Siri's capabilities. With Gemini and ChatGPT in the mix, users could get smarter AI assistance, though it's unclear if Siri will auto-select models or let users choose. The beta confirms development, but there's no guarantee Gemini will roll out with iOS 18.4. After a period where Apple seemed to be lagging in the AI race, the company made a big move by teaming up with OpenAI in June 2024. That partnership now looks like just the beginning, as Apple seems to be gearing up to bring more advanced AI models -- possibly from other major players -- into its products. Related 5 reasons Google's AI is leagues ahead of Apple Intelligence Even comparing the two feels unfair Posts 1 The iOS 18.4 beta, spotted by Aaron Perris from MacRumors, hints at a big upgrade for Apple Intelligence (via 9to5Mac). Code mentions both 'Google' and 'OpenAI' as possible third-party AI models, suggesting Apple is opening the door to broader AI integration. This has sparked speculation that Google Gemini could make its way into Siri, potentially giving it a major boost in capabilities. Bringing Gemini into Apple Intelligence could allow it to handle more complex questions that are currently beyond its reach. Paired with the existing ChatGPT integration, this move would give users access to a broader range of AI tools. However, it's still unclear whether users will choose their preferred model or if Siri will automatically pick one based on the complexity of the question. Apple's AI strategy is taking shape This integration isn't exactly a surprise. Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of software engineering, has already said Apple Intelligence would support multiple AI providers, including Google's Gemini. Now, with Gemini references popping up in the latest developer beta, it looks like Apple is moving full speed ahead on making it happen. While this discovery is a big deal, it simply confirms development and doesn't guarantee Gemini will roll out with iOS 18.4. Related 6 things I had no idea Gemini could do Google Gemini just got even more useful for me Posts 26 Back in March 2024, reports hinted at Apple's plan to bring Google Gemini into its ecosystem. The delay in making it happen remains a mystery, but what's clear is that Gemini, ChatGPT, and other AI models will all be part of Apple Intelligence under a unified system. Apple's AI setup follows a layered approach. Siri first tries to handle requests directly on the device, but if more power is needed, it can tap into external AI models. More importantly, users have the choice to decide if and when their data gets sent to these services.

You'll soon be able to use Gemini in Apple Intelligence as iOS 18.4 beta hints at upcoming integration
It would allow users to ask Google AI more complicated queries Gemini could be integrated into Siri very soon, as new code in the iOS 18.4 beta hints at more AI model functionality for Apple Intelligence. Google Gemini functionality in Apple Intelligence-powered Siri would allow users to ask Google AI more difficult questions than Siri can currently answer. This would be available as an alternate option to ChatGPT integration, although we're not sure if you'll need to choose or if you'll be able to access different AI models depending on your queries. At WWDC 2024 when Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, Craig Federighi said, "We also intend to add support for other AI models in the future." following the ChatGPT Siri integration announcement, it would now appear that Gemini is the next AI model to follow suit. According to @aarop613 on X, there is a reference to "Google" as part of "choice_options" alongside the already available ChatGPT integration. This would imply that Gemini might be available in Siri as soon as the official iOS 18.4 launch which is expected sometime in the next few months. This wouldn't be the first time Apple and Google work together, the companies have had a lucrative deal to include Google Search as the default search engine in Safari on iOS for years now, and despite being direct competitors see benefits in working together. Google recently released Gemini 2.0 Flash which is an incredible multimodal AI model that can go toe-to-toe with the best OpenAI has to offer. Implementing Gemini into Siri would give Apple Intelligence an edge over other smartphone AI offerings by incorporating multiple models into one user experience. If Apple's goal is to continuously increase AI model offerings in Siri with Apple Intelligence, users will benefit from a wide scope of functionality, and that's only a good thing. While we don't know when to expect Gemini integration in Siri, this code points towards the arrival of Google AI in the not-too-distant future.

Apple Intelligence with Google Gemini integration looks to be coming soon
Apple's plans to add Google Gemini to Apple Intelligence are well underway, according to backend iOS code. 9To5Mac analyst Aaron Perris looked into the backend update for the iOS 18.4 beta and discovered mentions of "Google" alongside "OpenAI" and "Third Party Model." This suggests Google's AI model Gemini might soon be another option for Apple users to choose from as an alternative to ChatGPT. This discovery is not unexpected. Following the keynote announcement of Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, software exec Craig Federighi confirmed rumors of an Apple and Google partnership, saying, "We're looking forward to doing integrations with other models, including Google Gemini, for instance, in the future." Of course, this came after Apple had announced a partnership with OpenAI, bringing ChatGPT to Apple Intelligence as a third-party option to use with Siri and other AI features. However, Federighi made it clear that Apple wanted to allow users to choose from multiple models. At the time, Federighi didn't share any specifics on a timeline, but this leak shows us that the Google Gemini integration is coming soon. As 9To5Mac noted, this doesn't mean Gemini will be part of the iOS 18.4 update, it definitely means Apple is actively working on it. The Apple Intelligence launch has been a bit of a mixed bag. Users were frustrated with the staggered (and delayed) rollout, underwhelmed by gimmicky features, and annoyed by AI-generated summaries that are sometimes inaccurate. Plus, users are still waiting for the alleged new and improved Siri which is slated for the upcoming iOS 18.4 release. By comparison, Samsung has been quicker and more aggressive in deploying AI features for its Galaxy series and already has Google Gemini integration. It's unclear how Apple will plan to integrate Gemini, but it would be a way to catch up to its competitors and cover some of its shortcomings in the voice assistant department. On that note, Apple is reportedly working on its own LLM for iOS 19 and macOS 16, which will likely be announced at this year's WWDC.

Apple Update Teases Google Gemini Integration on iPhones
Apple may be delivering on its promise to add more AI models to Apple Intelligence. The company recently rolled out a backend update with iOS 18.4 that includes coding language for supporting Google Gemini. MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris initially spotted the update on X. The report suggests Apple may be working to integrate the technology into its next software update, but a launch date for Gemini support remains uncertain. Apple executive Craig Federighi previously hinted that Gemini would find its way onto the iPhone during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024. A representative for Apple did not respond to a request for comment. Apple's desire to add more AI models to Apple Intelligence could make for a more dynamic user experience. It may potentially lean on certain models for some tasks, and other models for separate tasks. Read more: What Is Gemini? Everything You Should Know About Google's AI Too It also comes as Apple intends to make Siri a more personalized, smarter virtual assistant amid a broader push to strengthen the company's presence in smart home technology, where it has traditionally lagged behind Google and Amazon. At the same time, Apple is expected to launch a generative AI-powered version of Siri in the weeks ahead, following reports of glitches and delays. Apple Intelligence currently allows users to ask Siri questions that are processed by OpenAI's ChatGPT. But some previously announced features have not yet been introduced, such as the ability to better respond to tasks, offer answers with greater personalized insight and do more within apps. Read more: Best iPhone in 2025: Here's Which Apple Phone You Should Buy Meanwhile, Google has recently introduced updates for Gemini, including the ability to recall past chats and multimodal capabilities that support text, images and automated tasks. Reece Hayden, an analyst at ABI Research, said the approach to include multiple AI models makes sense for a few reasons, particularly because varying models offer different accuracy, data and performance. "Deploying multiple [options] means that applications can choose the most appropriate model to perform a task and optimize cost and performance," Hayden told CNET. He added that by using multiple models, Apple can better keep customer data safely within the Apple Intelligence ecosystem instead of handing it over to third-party systems. "Sole partnership with OpenAI is hugely risky," he said. "By expanding the ecosystem, they gain additional buyer power which can support contract negotiations in the future."

Google's Gemini AI might soon back up Siri on your iPhone - just like ChatGPT
iPhone users might soon be able to tap into Google Gemini for AI-powered assistance. Also: Gemini's new free feature can save you hours of tedious PDF analysis In a Friday post on X, MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris provided a screenshot of backend code for the newly released iOS 18.4 developer beta. Titled "Third Party Model," the code shows Google alongside OpenAI, seemingly indicating that Gemini is joining ChatGPT as an integrated AI chatbot. Reports surfaced early last year that Apple was in talks with Google about integrating Gemini into its supported devices. At last year's Worldwide Developers Conference in June, Apple Senior VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi said the company was looking forward to integrating models like Google Gemini in the future. Of course, Apple had also been in talks with OpenAI about adding ChatGPT, which was added to supported iPhones (as well as iPads and Macs) last December. All you need is a device that supports Apple Intelligence, namely any iPhone 16 model, an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPhone 15 Pro Max, any iPad with an A17 Pro or M1 or later chip, or any Mac with an M1 or later chip. Also: ChatGPT's user base just doubled in 6 months - to more than 400 million weekly users Given Siri's limitations and lack of AI abilities, the goal has been to give Apple users an easy and seamless way to work with a true AI bot. The process itself is relatively simple. You set up ChatGPT either anonymously with free access or through a paid account, such as ChatGPT Plus or Pro. Give Siri a request it can't handle, and it will pass your query along to ChatGPT. You can also ask Siri directly to use ChatGPT to answer a question. The process is likely to be similar with Gemini. Presumably, you'll be able to use the basic version for free or access your own Gemini Advanced account. With both ChatGPT and Gemini on your device, you may have to choose your favorite AI as the default. Otherwise, you'll probably be able to tell Siri which service you want to use for a specific request. Assuming Gemini is due to arrive with iOS 18.4, the launch date so far points to early April. Of course, the code inclusion isn't conclusive proof that the AI's debut is just around the corner. But assuming the talks with Google were fruitful, we should see Gemini pop up sooner or later.

Gemini could be coming to Apple Intelligence - Phandroid
When Apple officially announced Apple Intelligence, the company revealed that it had formed a partnership with OpenAI. This would allow users to access OpenAI's ChatGPT for more advanced AI-related tasks and functions. It also revealed Apple's plan to potentially give users a choice on which AI model they wanted to use. Now, according to reports, Apple could be getting ready to integrate Gemini into Apple Intelligence. According to a post on X by Aaron Perris, the latest iOS 18.4 beta code has revealed that Apple is getting ready to bring Gemini to Apple Intelligence. The option for both "Google" and "OpenAI" were spotted as alternative AI models, suggesting that Apple is bringing Gemini to iOS. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it does look that way. We can't say we're too surprised. Despite being rivals in the mobile space, Apple and Google have worked together multiple times in the past. The most notable partnership would be Google Search, which is the default search engine on Safari, an "honor" that Google had to pay Apple billions of dollars for. While there are plenty of AI models out there, Gemini and ChatGPT are some of the more well-known mainstream ones. Apple could have picked another AI model, but if users weren't familiar with it, they might not use it. Last but not least, notable Apple analyst and insider Mark Gurman did hint that Gemini could be coming to Apple Intelligence in the future, so this code seems to corroborate those claims.

Apple may soon bring Gemini AI integration with Apple Intelligence, beyond ChatGPT: Here's what we know
This revealed a "Third-party model" section that now lists Google alongside OpenAI. When the talks about Apple Intelligence first began, there were speculations about the integration of ChatGPT or Gemini AI with Siri to make it more advanced. Fast forward to when Apple rolled out Apple Intelligence with ChatGPT integration, but people were still curious about how Gemini AI would be integrated. And now, Apple appears to be expanding its AI integration by potentially adding Google's Gemini AI models to Apple Intelligence. A recent leak revolving around the iOS 18.4 beta reveals that Apple is currently working to incorporate another third-party AI service, in addition to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which was introduced in iOS 18.2. Aaron Perris, who is an analyst with MacRumours, found new code strings in the latest iOS 18.4 beta. This revealed a "Third-party model" section that now lists Google alongside OpenAI. Apple had previously shared that it will offer multiple AI models to its users and this leak aligns with it. Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, hinted at this possibility during WWDC 2024, stating that while OpenAI was the first AI provider, Apple aimed to collaborate with other companies, including Google. However, he emphasized that there were no immediate announcements at the time. Currently, Apple Intelligence provides ChatGPT-powered assistance via Siri and Writing Tools. If Google's AI models join the ecosystem, Apple users may gain access to a broader range of AI capabilities, further enhancing the intelligence of Apple's devices. One thing that we have taken away from the entire Apple Intelligence rollout timeline is that we should not expect that Gemini AI will be integrated immediately. Mark Gurman had previously reported that Apple could maintain an exclusivity period for OpenAI before expanding its AI partnerships. If Apple proceeds with Gemini's integration, it could align with the launch of the iPhone 17 series later this year. For now, let's take this piece of news with a pinch of salt as Apple has some time at hand before the iPhone 17 series is dropped and there can be some changes to it.

Apple Intelligence Might Soon Offer Gemini AI Models Alongside OpenAI
Craig Federighi had hinted at more AI models joining OpenAI's GPT-4o Apple might be planning to expand the integration of third-party artificial intelligence (AI) services with Siri. The Cupertino-based tech giant added Apple Intelligence features to compatible iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices with the iOS 18.2 update in December 2024. The rollout also marked the first time the company offered a system-wide integration of a third-party service when it allowed users to redirect Siri queries to OpenAI's ChatGPT. Now, as per a leak, the company could also include Google's AI models in the offering, expanding the integration. MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris revealed the possibility of a partnership in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). Sharing a screenshot of strings of code from the recently released iOS 18.4 beta, he highlighted that Apple might be working to integrate Gemini AI models with the operating system. The backend of the update now shows two choices under the "Third-party model" section, based on the screenshot. While OpenAI was already added, it now shows Google as an option as well. Notably, the code does not reveal any other details such as which AI models might be integrated, and what features the AI model will be able to access. If true, this leak will also corroborate with what Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple hinted at during a post-keynote session at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. At the time, the company executive highlighted that Apple would continue integrating different AI models alongside OpenAI's chatbot. Federighi also name-dropped Google Gemini, but added, "Nothing to announce right now, but that's our direction." Despite the leak, the integration of Gemini AI models is unlikely to happen anytime soon. Even if the code appeared in the iOS 18.4 beta update, it might be closer to the iPhone 17 series launch before Gemini capabilities show up in Apple devices. Last year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also claimed the same, highlighting that the tech giant could give OpenAI a window of exclusivity before onboarding other AI partners. Currently, besides Siri, access to ChatGPT is also available via Apple Intelligence's Writing Tools. The Compose feature also allows users to generate images using the chatbot.

Apple preparing Google Gemini integration with Apple Intelligence - 9to5Mac
Currently, Apple Intelligence offers the ability to direct Siri requests to ChatGPT, providing more contextual answers than what Siri would be able to offer. Back at WWDC24, Apple software exec Craig Federighi suggested in an interview that they'd like to offer integration with other AI models, including Google Gemini. That integration may arrive in the not too distant future, according to a new leak. In a backend update pushed alongside iOS 18.4 beta, Apple now includes both "Google" and "OpenAI" options for third-party models within Apple Intelligence. This comes from code sleuth Aaron Perris on X. While this doesn't necessarily confirm that we'll see Gemini integration later in iOS 18.4, especially given all of the other Apple Intelligence delays that have occurred so far, it does nearly confirm that it'll come at some point in the near future, perhaps in a later iOS 18 update or iOS 19. Apple is expected to release its own conversational Siri model in iOS 19. Google recently released some new Gemini 2.0 models, including a new reasoning model. It's possible that these new models will debut on the iPhone in the near future. At least, if you own an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16/16 Pro, or the new iPhone 16e.
[10]
You may not have to wait much longer to use Gemini with Apple Intelligence
However, it's unclear when Apple plans to incorporate Gemini. Just because Google is being referenced now, doesn't necessarily mean that Gemini will arrive right away. It's possible Gemini could be added in a future iOS 18 update, but it's equally possible that we may not see it until iOS 19. Either way, when it does arrive, it'll be nice to have a choice over what AI model you want to use. Speaking of Gemini, Google recently launched an experimental version of Gemini 2.0 Pro and a Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite preview. Google has claimed that Pro "has the strongest coding performance and ability to handle complex prompts, with better understanding and reasoning of world knowledge, than any model we've released so far." Meanwhile, 2.0 Flash-Lite is meant to be a cost-efficient model that outperforms 1.5 Flash, while being just as fast and costing the same amount.

Apple Intelligence could get Gemini alongside ChatGPT -- here's why that's a big deal
Apple Intelligence -- the AI interface for iPhones, iPads and Macs -- has had a mixed response since it launched last year. But following a misinformation-shaped bump in the road with the now withdrawn news summary feature, it's getting better with each new version of the various operating systems. And we now have a hint that Apple is planning a major shakeup in how information can be generated in a future OS update. A code dive in the backend for the iOS 18.4 beta from the X user Aaron Perris reveals a line that hints users will have a choice between Google and OpenAI. The latter makes ChatGPT which is the basis for Apple Intelligence's intelligence at the moment, while the former makes Gemini which isn't officially integrated at all at the time of writing. Of course, the presence of code in beta software doesn't necessarily mean that access to Google Gemini will be included in the full release of iOS 18.4 or even 18.5. But it does heavily suggest that we'll see Gemini support in a future version -- or at least that Apple is toying with the possibility. This isn't completely surprising. When Apple Intelligence was first mooted at last year's WWDC developer conference, the company's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, said as much in a post-keynote conversation. "We think ultimately people are going to have a preference perhaps for certain models that they want to use, maybe one that's great for creative writing or one that they prefer for coding," he said at the time. "And so we may look forward to doing integrations with different models like Google Gemini in the future. I mean, nothing to announce right now, but that's our direction." From that, it appears that Apple's implementation -- should it actually happen -- will be on the flexible side. If Federighi's vision comes to pass, it sounds like you'll be able to pick and choose which AI handles each tasks, meaning you get the best of all worlds. Different AI models excel at different things, which is why when we do head-to-head comparisons we set them a selection of varied challenges encompassing everything from coding to art generation. On Gemini vs ChatGPT, the latter narrowly won 4-3, but it was a close-run thing -- indeed, on the creative writing category, Gemini only lost because it went 78 words over the requested wordcount (ChatGPT added just 13). There's also some subjectivity involved on the judge's part: in our ChatGPT o3-mini vs Gemini 2.0 Flash face-off, the outcome was reversed with Google's model winning by five to three. Apple says we'll see iOS 18.4 arriving for all users in April, and you can read about the features contained in the beta here. One that will definitely arrive with the full release is Apple News Plus Food, which the company has already promoted via its newsroom.

Apple prepares to add Google Gemini to Apple Intelligence
Google Gemini integration could be coming to Apple Intelligence soon Code within the new iOS 18.4 beta shows that Apple appears to be readying an alternative to its ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence, with an option to use Google Gemini. Apple has been upfront from the start of Apple Intelligence that it intended to work with multiple AI partners, including Google with its Gemini service. Now that a developer beta of iOS 18.4 has been released, code within it has been found to include a reference to Google Gemini. As first spotted by 9to5mac, the code is actually in a backend update that was issued alongside the beta. The code refers to Google rather than to Google Gemini, but the segment also refers to OpenAI instead of that firm's ChatGPT. Apple was said to be specifically intending to add integration with Google Gemini back in March 2024. It's not known why it has taken a year, so far, for it to begin adding it to iOS. What is known is that Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and other AI services such as Alibaba and Baidu in China, will all integrate into Apple Intelligence in the same way. A user's request will first be processed on-device by Siri, and then if necessary, will be passed to the integrated AI service with that user's permission. Apple's deal with OpenAI means that user requests are serviced by ChatGPT but no information is retained by the AI firm. It's certain that any deal with Google would include the same privacy protection. Similarly, the integration is most likely to be a free addition to the features that Apple Intelligence offers. It has previously been rumored that Apple will charge for some Apple Intelligence features, but not before 2027. Note that while the presence of code in the iOS 18.4 beta cycle is indicative that the integration will be coming soon, it is not a guarantee.

Apple may be preparing Gemini integration in Apple Intelligence.
Apple has introduced code referencing "Google" as a third-party model choice for Apple Intelligence to leverage, according to a backend change spotted by Aaron Perris, who often shares info gleaned from Apple firmware code, following the release of the first iOS 18.4 beta last week. Apple executive Craig Federighi specifically named Gemini when he suggested last year that Apple Intelligence could leverage more third-party AI models than just ChatGPT, as 9to5Mac notes.

Apple's iOS 18.4 beta hints at the integration of Google Gemini into Apple Intelligence, potentially boosting Siri's capabilities and offering users access to multiple AI models.
Apple appears to be making significant strides in expanding its AI capabilities, with recent developments suggesting the integration of Google's Gemini AI into Apple Intelligence. This move could potentially revolutionize the way iPhone users interact with AI-powered assistants.
The iOS 18.4 beta, recently analyzed by MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris, has unveiled intriguing code references to both 'Google' and 'OpenAI' as possible third-party AI models 12. This discovery has sparked speculation about Apple's plans to incorporate Google Gemini into its ecosystem, potentially giving Siri a substantial boost in capabilities 1.
Apple's strategy seems to be evolving towards a multi-model AI approach. Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior VP of Software Engineering, had previously hinted at this direction during the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024, stating, "We also intend to add support for other AI models in the future" 24. This approach could allow Apple to leverage different AI models for various tasks, optimizing performance and cost-effectiveness 4.
The integration of Gemini, alongside the existing ChatGPT functionality, could significantly enhance the user experience. Users might soon be able to ask more complex questions that are currently beyond Siri's capabilities 2. However, it remains unclear whether users will have the option to choose their preferred AI model or if Siri will automatically select the most appropriate one based on the query 1.
Apple's AI setup follows a layered approach. Siri first attempts to handle requests directly on the device, but when more processing power is needed, it can tap into external AI models 1. Importantly, users have control over when and if their data is sent to these services, maintaining Apple's commitment to privacy 13.
This move comes as Apple faces stiff competition in the AI space. Samsung, for instance, has already integrated Google Gemini into its Galaxy series 3. By incorporating multiple AI models, Apple aims to catch up with competitors and address some of the shortcomings in its voice assistant capabilities 3.
While the presence of Gemini references in the iOS 18.4 beta is significant, it doesn't guarantee an immediate rollout 15. The exact launch date for Gemini integration remains uncertain, but industry observers speculate it could be as early as April 2025 5.
Apple's multi-model approach could have broader implications for the AI industry. By expanding its AI ecosystem, Apple gains additional leverage in contract negotiations and reduces dependency on a single AI provider 4. This strategy also allows Apple to keep customer data more securely within its ecosystem 4.
As Apple continues to refine its AI strategy, users can look forward to a more dynamic and capable AI assistant experience on their iPhones. The integration of Google Gemini, alongside ChatGPT, marks a significant step in Apple's journey to enhance its AI offerings and maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
