Apple's iPhone 16 Event: Everything to Expect, From the Apple Watch X to New AirPods
Named a Tech Media Trailblazer by the Consumer Technology Association in 2019, a winner of SPJ NorCal's Excellence in Journalism Awards in 2022 and has three times been a finalist in the LA Press Club's National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards. Apple's iPhone event is less than two weeks away, during which the company is expected to debut the iPhone 16 and potentially share more details on the public launch of iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence. The company's event invite, sent on Monday, depicts the Apple logo with different overlapping colors, and the text "It's Glowtime" written underneath. The design calls back to the one sent out for June's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, which introduced the world to Apple Intelligence, the company's suite of AI features. It's likely the iPhone maker will continue that conversation during its fall event, along with unveiling new hardware. Here's everything we're anticipating, and how you can tune into Apple's keynote. Apple's fall keynote takes place Monday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. BST, 3 a.m. AEST). You can tune in via a livestream on Apple's site, or on YouTube. You can also watch from the Apple TV app. Apple used much of its June WWDC keynote to talk about Apple Intelligence, its suite of AI features that includes capabilities like a smarter Siri, AI-powered writing tools and ChatGPT integration. The company noted that Apple Intelligence will arrive on iPhone 15 Pro models, and it's likely the iPhone 16 lineup will be the first to come out of the box with those new AI features baked in. Going hand in hand with that anticipated announcement is the long-awaited public rollout of iOS 18, which Apple also debuted in June. The new operating system includes features like customizable home and lock screens, an updated Control Center and RCS messaging, which should make texting friends with Android phones more seamless. The invitation for Apple's Sept. 9 event hints that software, and AI in particular, could be a major focus throughout the keynote, even with the anticipated release of new gadgets. The range of overlapping colors on the Apple logo and "Glowtime" branding could be a callout to the Siri upgrade arriving with iOS 18, which activates a glowing border around your device when summoned. Still, the company is also expected to shine a light on iPhone hardware advancements, especially related to the cameras. Rumors suggest the iPhone 16 lineup could include larger image sensors and a new physical camera button, which would sit next to the Action button that debuted on last year's iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. It'll reportedly recognize swipe gestures, so you could swipe right or left to zoom in or out. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also suggests the base iPhone 16 Pro will come with a 5x optical zoom lens, meaning you'd no longer have to opt for the pricier Pro Max to get that capability. Another noted analyst, Jeff Pu, says the ultrawide cameras on both the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could get a significant bump up from 12 megapixels to 48 megapixels. When it comes to the baseline iPhone models, the 16 and 16 Plus could feature cameras that are vertically stacked, instead of horizontally. This would allow the devices to more easily shoot spatial video, using information from both cameras to create a 3D-like effect. Spatial videos look like standard 2D videos when viewed on an iPhone but are designed to give a 3D effect when viewed on Apple's Vision Pro headset. Some iPhone models could also have thinner bezels, and therefore larger screens -- though it's not clear which. When it comes to processors, all four iPhone 16 models may get a next-generation Apple chipset with the A18 branding, with Pro versions packing a more powerful A18 Bionic Pro, and base models getting a regular A18. It's been about seven years since Apple surprised everyone with its unique naming convention for the iPhone X (skipping the iPhone "9" altogether in favor of a title that would commemorate the 10th anniversary of the device). And now, the company is poised to follow that tradition by potentially dubbing the 10th generation of its Watch series either the Apple Watch 10 or X (for the purposes of this article, we'll go with X). The smartwatch could have a thinner design, as well as larger screen size options; the 41mm iteration could increase to 45mm, while the 45mm current option could jump to 49mm. The Apple Watch X may also pack new health capabilities, including blood-pressure monitoring and a system for detecting sleep apnea by measuring someone's sleeping and breathing habits. It could also feature a new mechanism for attaching bands to the watch face magnetically. It's possible Apple could unveil two new AirPods models during its fall event, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. They'd both have a redesigned look, including shorter stems, and support for USB-C charging. A higher-end version could feature Active Noise Cancellation, meaning you wouldn't need to get the more expensive AirPods Pro to tap into that feature. Apple-watchers are also anticipating an update to the AirPods Max, which debuted nearly four years ago. It's not clear if we'll see said improvements during Apple's fall event, though. If we do, it's possible the over-ear headphones could receive more modest updates like support for USB-C charging and new colors. Come Sept. 9, we'll see how many of these rumors come to fruition.

Apple 'Glowtime' iPhone 16 event -- 5 rumors you need to know about
Apple's next launch event takes place Monday, September 9 and there's a lot to be excited about. From the obvious launch of the iPhone 16 lineup to the latest updates on Apple Intelligence, we're very interested in what Apple has in store. But while those aforementioned points are a lock to happen, there's also a lot of uncertainty about what could make the cut and what could get left out during the "Glowtime" event. (That's what Apple's calling it in invites to the September 9 proceedings, at least.) It's also an intriguing date for the tech giant to choose. The last time Apple held a tentpole launch event on a Monday was all the way back in 2010 when Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4. And it marks 10 years to the day since Apple revealed the first Apple Watch. Now it's not exactly clear from the invitation what Apple is choosing to focus on. The best guess is that the "Glowtime" visual alludes to the new glowing visualization Apple will employ for Siri as it rolls out Apple Intelligence integration. When the iPhone's voice assistant is summoned, the screen's bezel will light up with iridescent colors that respond to your voice. It's an animation that will only be present on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence -- such as the new iPhone 16 models. So while it remains to be seen exactly what will be shown onstage at the Glowtime event, here are five of the biggest rumors you need to know about. This should come as no surprise but the iPhone 16 lineup is going to embrace Apple Intelligence in a big way, and the company has already indicated those AI capabilities will push a lot of people to upgrade. At present, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be able to take advantage of Apple Intelligence when it actually launches. Although the suite of AI-infused features won't launch directly with the iPhone 16 series -- they'll arrive via a subsequent software update -- all the handsets in the range will be capable of running them. In hardware terms, that'll be down to the new A18 chip and improved Neural Engine on the new phones. However, Apple will still want to create a division between the regular and Pro models so the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could benefit from an A18 Pro chip and, possibly, some exclusive Apple Intelligence features. So while any iPhone 16 user will be able to eventually employ Apple Intelligence to do things like create amazing images from text prompts or rewrite their messages and check grammar, there could be some special mentions of Pro-level features we've yet to see. Anyone hoping to see the AirPods Pro 3 unveiled at the Glowtime event may be out of luck. All the audio rumors are pointing to a by-the-numbers update of the standard AirPods in the form of AirPods 4. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is believed to be discontinuing AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 this year to have the new model take over as the entry-level option. From a design standpoint, it's believed the AirPods 4 will merge the AirPods 3 with the AirPods Pro to give us an improved fit but without the replaceable tips. We'll also likely see a new USB-C charging case and possibly two different variants: one with noise cancellation and a lower-cost version without. The biggest missed opportunity in all this? AirPods Max 2. The company's over-ear headphones are still lingering on as a first-generation product complete with Lightning charging port. If there's one device calling out for an upgrade, this is it. On September 9, 2014, Apple revealed the first Apple Watch and, in the intervening decade, the wearable has come to dominate the market. The Glowtime event would seem like the perfect opportunity for a big Apple Watch revelation, but according to the rumor mill, this year will be pretty pedestrian. We're expecting to see the Apple Watch Series 10 debut with a slightly bigger form factor: the 41mm model will grow to 45mm while the 45mm model will bump up to 49mm. At the same time, the screen should expand but the chassis would be made thinner. There likely won't be any big design departure so all the best Apple Watch bands will still fit. Meanwhile, newer health features like sleep apnea detection could arrive and we're also likely to see the Apple Watch Ultra 3. There have been few rumors on this but it's expected to be identical to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 but with an upgraded chip. The most interesting reveal would be the launch of the Apple Watch SE 3, which could bring a lot of great wearable features into an affordable price range for most people. The Apple Watch SE is on a two-year cadence of updates with the first appearing in 2020 and the second in 2022. So the time is right for the Apple Watch SE (2024) to break cover. The iPad mini 7 has been talked about for nearly a year at this point and there's a great deal of speculation about whether or not Apple will unveil it at this event. Not counting the fact iPad mini 6 stock is running low, the diminutive slate was left off the upgrade list at Apple's "Let Loose" event earlier this year. When it comes to what we expect, an updated iPad mini would be much the same in terms of design and screen -- an 8.3-inch display with a 2266 x 1488-pixel resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. But the real changes are apt to be on the inside. My colleague Jason England goes into more detail here but we should hopefully see a bump in RAM and storage as well as hopefully the A17 Pro chip from the iPhone 15 Pro Max to enable the iPad mini 7 to enjoy the benefits of Apple Intelligence. You might be forgiven for wondering what's going on with the Apple Vision Pro. We called the headset a "revolution in progress" in our Apple Vision Pro review, but things have been a little quiet of late. We had a release beyond the United States announced earlier this year but there's not been much by way of headline-grabbing news since then. There has been much talk of a cheaper Vision Pro headset in development at Apple's labs but it's highly unlikely we'll hear anything about it on September 9. According to rumors, this less expensive headset won't be ready until the end of 2025 at the earliest. However, given the importance of this device to Apple's long-term...ahem, vision, it would seem like some sort of update is warranted for the Glowtime event -- even if it's just to tell us about its expansion to even more countries. At any rate, you'll be able to find out the answer to these rumors and more when the Glowtime event officially kicks off at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT / 6 p.m. BST.

Apple to showcase iPhone 16 in two weeks
It's almost a year since the iPhone 15 was launched and that means that, in the usual, expected order, there will be a new phone from Apple soon. An invitation has been sent out to the press and influencers for the next big Apple event called "It's Glowtime", which will take place in Cupertino on September 9. In other words, in just under two weeks. Apple is expected to unveil the next series of iPhone models, which according to reliable rumours will be equipped with the A18 chipset. But the iPhone 16 is also expected to grow in size, at the very least the Pro and Pro Max models getting this treatment too, which are said to have a 0.2-inch larger screen and a brand new "capture" button connected to the camera - for faster image capture. New AirPods are also said to appear during the event along with more AI, iOS 18 and possibly even a sneak peek of the Watch 10 series along with the Watch Ultra 3. Exciting for all Apple fans and we will of course report on the news. As usual, the event will also be streamed from Apple's own website or YouTube. Which of this autumn's Apple news are you most looking forward to, or hoping to see?
