Broadcom broadens private cloud options - SiliconANGLE
Broadcom Inc. today will use its Explore conference in Barcelona to announce a range of updates to its VMware Cloud Foundation platform, introducing new services and partnerships to support generative artificial intelligence development, cybersecurity and sovereign clouds. Enhancements to VCF more than double storage capacity to make it an "enterprise-class hyperconverged infrastructure platform," said Prashanth Shenoy, vice president of marketing for cloud platform, infrastructure and solutions at Broadcom. The announcements continue VMware's strategy of providing "a wide variety of offerings for customers of various sizes and stages in the cloud journey," Shenoy said. "If they want a fully private cloud platform, they can go with VMware Cloud Foundation. If they want an enterprise-class hyperconverged infrastructure platform, they can go with vSphere Foundation, or if they just want to start with compute virtualization, they can go with vSphere enterprise." A new offering in the VCF library of Advanced Services -- which are private cloud services similar to those offered in the public cloud -- simplifies the deployment and management of four popular data services, with an emphasis on data security and operational efficiency. Tanzu Data Services integrates fleet-level automated lifecycle management integrated natively into VCF with support for the PostgreSQL and MySQL database management systems, RabbitMQ messaging and Valkey, a high-performance, open-source key-value fork of Redis. Tanzu Data Services automates deployment, backups, clustering and security patching with a self-service delivery model and access to Broadcom enterprise-level support. An expanded VMware Live Recovery service now supports Google Cloud VMware Engine as a target isolated recovery environment for VCF workloads. VMware said that this creates a secure recovery target alongside VMware Cloud on AWS and on-premises environments, allowing for more flexible and faster recovery. Previously, VMware Live Recovery protected GCVE sites only as sources. An update to VMware's cybersecurity portfolio, VMware vDefend, adds a generative AI assistant that helps information technology security teams identify more sophisticated threats, reduce false positives and enhance overall situational awareness. Intelligent Assist uses a natural language interface to describe complex security incidents and provides remediation recommendations. Further enhancements to the vDefend portfolio improve east-west traffic security within data centers and private cloud environments. Custom signature support for intrusion detection and prevention systems allows organizations to tailor defenses by importing custom or third-party signatures. A new "Malware Analysis Test Drive" capability lets security teams analyze potentially harmful files or URLs for sophisticated or evasive malware. Broadcom is also expanding support for generative AI in private cloud environments with a new integration with Microsoft Corp.'s Azure AI Video Indexer on VCF and Azure VMware Solution. Azure AI Video Indexer works with Azure Arc -- a Microsoft service designed to extend Azure's cloud management and services to on-premises, multicloud and edge environments -- for video and audio analysis. Broadcom has integrated it into VMware Private AI, enabling generative AI workloads to run in data center and edge environments. That means enterprises can leverage Azure's AI and machine learning tools to perform media analysis on private infrastructure while meeting data residency and security requirements. "Customers can now keep their proprietary data on-premises and use Azure services on top of VCF to extract meaningful data and insights from their video data and their audio data to improve content discoverability," Shenoy said. Enhancements to Broadcom's Private Cloud Modernization Program are aimed at helping organizations modernize their private cloud environments. A new certification track, VMware Certified Professional - VCF Architect, validates an architect's expertise in building VCF-based applications with acceptable levels of availability, manageability, performance, recoverability and security. "We have completely revamped our VCF certification program so architects become the implementers of a modern cloud platform rather than just doing it at a component level," Shenoy said. Professionals who receive VCP certification will now get up to three years of a free personal-use license for VCF. "We are committed to helping our customers not only learn about VCF but also getting hands-on experience," Shenoy said. In a parallel announcement, Broadcom unveiled several updates to its VeloCloud portfolio, introducing VeloRAIN (Robust AI Networking) and two new high-end edge appliances, the VeloCloud Edge 4100 and 5100. The VeloRain architecture leverages AI to improve network performance and security with the ability to identify and prioritize encrypted application traffic for better service quality. VeloRain can identify previously opaque traffic types, allowing organizations to streamline application performance and prioritize applications without manual intervention. AI-driven channel estimation for wireless networks supports more efficient traffic management across variable network conditions. The enhancements aim to do a better job of identifying the type of traffic traversing networks, a task that has become more challenging as AI training and inferencing has introduced new variables. "AI applications are different in the way they use the network," said Sanjay Uppal, senior vice president and general manager of the software-defined edge division at Broadcom. "They're very bursty, highly latency-sensitive and peer-to-peer. You get high asymmetry in the traffic for generative AI workloads compared to workloads we've been used to." VeloRain has been trained on data from more than a half-million edge devices to create service-level profiles tuned to use cases in vertical industries like retail, manufacturing, and financial services. The goal "is to be able to use AI to improve the performance of the underlying networks and the quality of experience for the users of those network," Uppal said. The new VeloCloud Edge 4100 and 5100 appliances provide up to 100-gigabits-per-second throughput along with clustering for greater scalability. They're designed to provide enhanced resilience and rapid failover capabilities. Broadcom also said it has more than doubled its roster of service provider partners who provide sovereign cloud services, to more than 50. A sovereign cloud is a cloud computing environment designed to meet specific national or regional regulatory, legal and security requirements.

VMware's bevy of updates to VCF at Explore Barcelona 2024: Here's why they matter - SiliconANGLE
VMware's bevy of updates to VCF at Explore Barcelona 2024: Here's why they matter Broadcom Inc. announced new capabilities for its VMware Cloud Foundation or VCF private cloud platform at this week's VMware Explore 2024 in Barcelona, focusing on the company's focus on the growing adoption of artificial intelligence, national digital sovereignty and cyber resilience. These factors have also been causing companies to reevaluate their cloud strategies. Many chief information officers have told me they have been looking to augment their broader cloud strategies with more use of private cloud and, in some cases, bringing workloads back from an "as a service" model to a private model, which offers more control. The company also introduced ecosystem partnerships and modernization programs designed to accelerate the development of generative AI apps, cybersecurity initiatives and sovereign cloud adoption. It's important to understand the nuances of VCF. Although it's called "private cloud," it does not mean on-premises only, as customers can deploy the private cloud in their own data center, at the edge or in a public cloud. Krish Prasad (pictured), Broadcom senior vice president and general manager of the VCF Division, summed this up when he stated the company is "enabling private cloud everywhere" with VCF. He then mentioned the new capabilities when he said Broadcom is "unlocking the promise of AI in the enterprise, delivering new levels of organizational resilience, and supporting the privacy and digital sovereignty demands" of global customers. In the analyst briefing last week, Mark Chuang, senior director for Broadcom's VCF division, said the company is "rolling out continuous innovation in areas that are top of mind for customers," especially AI and cyber resiliency. Chuang added that Broadcom is building out its private cloud platform to offer customers new ways to obtain resiliency and choice. He said the goal is to help customers "achieve faster time to value" in three ways: "Based on data gathered from deployed VCF customers, we see a 10-month payback period on their investment, up to 34% lower infrastructure costs and 61% faster deployment time for new workloads," Chuang said. "And when it comes to resolving data loss incidences, we're seeing reports of 66% faster recovery and resolution." Technology and vision are essential, but the actual value of any solution is how well it delivers customer results. One Broadcom VCF customer seeing solid results from its deployments is ABN AMRO. The third-largest Dutch bank faced rapidly changing customer expectations. Chuang said customers want more value-based services from their banks. "This means a shift away from just standard checking and savings accounts to more personalized self-service banking experiences and support, he said. "The bank felt tied down by the complexity of its legacy technology environment. Following extensive analysis, ABN AMRO decided to build a private cloud platform based on VCF and move away from their previous managed service." "ABN AMRO wanted to gain greater control over its environment, breaking free of the constraints of its existing, costly, rigid agreement, getting robust management capabilities, and ultimately being free to run apps anywhere without the complexity of an application rewrite," Chuang explained. "The impact they've seen is developers are enjoying the benefits of an automated service catalog and improved test tooling in sandboxes. Ultimately, the bank is taking back ownership of its technology. It's now in a much stronger position to deliver better services to their customers at speed." VMware is able to achieve these results by delivering VCF as a turnkey, validated solution. This is a playbook the company has used many times before, dating back to the "VCE" joint solution with Cisco Systems Inc. and EMC Corp. When a customer is required to assemble a complex solution, there is always weeks or even months of tweaking and tuning time. The validated design removes much of the guesswork. Broadcom also announced a new advanced service -- VMware Tanzu Data Services -- "to streamline deployment, management and consumption of critical data services and enable faster application delivery, better data security and governance, and operational efficiency." The company said the data services offer "a modern way to store, manage and process data," which addresses the challenges faced when deploying microservices, serverless and other modern application architectures at scale. The company is also introducing VMware Live Recovery, which will support Google Cloud VMware Engine as an isolated recovery environment for VCF workloads for cyber and disaster recovery. This extends Live Recovery's protection of GCVE sites as a source while enabling a "consistent, secure and simplified" experience for protecting VMware workloads running on-premises or in the cloud to GCVE. With generative AI fast becoming a business necessity, Broadcom is extending its Private AI strategy to support Microsoft's Azure AI Video Indexer on VMware Private AI running on VCF and Azure VMware Solution. This is another example of Broadcom's commitment to helping customers accelerate their time-to-value for AI projects on VCF while enabling the Azure AI Video Indexer to run anywhere regardless of cloud deployment model. Broadcom also announced additional investments in its Private Cloud Modernization Program, which helps customers navigate the journey to private cloud with VCF. The company introduced two new capabilities: Broadcom announced that 50 VMware Cloud Service Providers now offer sovereign cloud services based on VCF, including 30 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Sovereign VCSP partners meet Broadcom's requirements for location operations by a legal entity that "owns, operates and manages the sovereign cloud offering with complete jurisdictional control, local data residency and portability without lock-in." VCF includes specific capabilities that address sovereign cloud requirements, ranging from privacy-enhancing computation support with Intel and AMD chipsets (confidential computing); integrated data-at-rest protection with vSAN Encryption; Secure Boot for ESXi Hosts and vSphere virtual machine encryption; comprehensive data services and compliance monitoring, alerting and reporting with VCF Operations. Broadcom said VCSP sovereign clouds also support Bring Your Own Keys, which provides customers with "even more confidence that no one else, not even the CSP, can view or access their information without permission." That's a lot of news from Broadcom and its VMware unit on several key fronts. But in the fast-moving worlds of AI, cloud services and security, the companies that succeed will be the first movers that offer the broadest, most valuable products and services. Broadcom has been selective regarding the parts of the VMware business it supports and invests in. Private cloud is an area that Broadcom appears to be "all in" on, as it favors a broad platform approach. AI will continue to drive customers to private clouds, and we are in the very early stages of this wave. VMware customers should expect to see continued investment in this area from Broadcom.

VMware Explore - private cloud is the best way to manage AI and security concerns
Digital leaders must use the private cloud to keep pace with rapid developments in emerging technology and support long-term business growth. That was the key message from the keynote session at VMware Explore in Barcelona, where senior executives outlined VMware's technology roadmap. The executives recognized AI and cybersecurity as top-of-mind issues for CIOs. To help companies manage these concerns, Broadcom, the owner of VMware, announced an expanded set of services, partnerships and programmes for the private cloud platform, VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). The event was the first European Explore event since Broadcom acquired VMware last November. Broadcom European CTO Joe Baguley acknowledged in a private press session that the media had extensively debated pricing and customer retention during the past 12 months. However, while pricing models might have changed for some customers, he told diginomica after the session that clarity is provided by speaking directly with Broadcom: Don't believe the hype; come and talk to us. During the keynote, Baguley acknowledged an "awful lot has happened" during the past year. He introduced Broadcom CEO Hock Tan to the stage, who said he's also heard from customers that VMware produces strong, reliable products. Now, these customers want the company to do more: You want our products to be easy to use. You're asking us to roll up our sleeves and do the hard work to make that happen. And that's exactly what we're doing. Tan said the objective at VMware is to create targeted services for customers, and the Explore keynote session highlighted some of the developments that are taking place: We are serious people. We're here to help you run your business better. We're not here to show and sell you bright, shiny objects. The key focus during Explore was the rise of private workloads. Tan set this focus on the private cloud in context by referring to the development of the public cloud 10 years ago. He suggested CIOs and CEOs were sold the promise of a technology that has often failed to deliver on its promises. The result is many business and digital leaders have been left disappointed by the public cloud: Today, you're all suffering a hangover. You're confronting what I call 'the three Cs of public cloud'. First, cost - public cloud is always more expensive than you expect. Second, complexity - the public cloud is another platform and an extra layer to manage, and it's not easy. And third, compliance - meeting regulatory requirements today is more complex and costly for public cloud. As proof, he pointed to research from finance giant Barclays which suggests that more than 80% of CEOs intend to move data back to the private cloud. This is a significant shift away from the move to on-demand that gathered pace during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tan suggested the future of enterprise IT - from cloud computing to emerging technology - is all about private provision: Private cloud, private AI, fuelled by your private data. It's about staying on-prem and staying in control. He said the shift to private workloads won't take place in isolation. Companies will continue to use public cloud services for elasticity. However, the public cloud will form part of a blended mix with private provision, where the private element will be the key to value generation and business growth: In this hybrid world, the private cloud is now the platform for innovation. Tan suggested the growth in demand for hybrid workloads helps explain why 70% of the core VMware capacity Broadcom has installed over the past 12 months has been based on VCF. He said this growth provides a solid platform for more growth. To satisfy CEOs and CIOs, he said VMware will push for further service developments, especially when it comes to data centers: There's plenty of room for improvement. Over the years, you've created a legacy of best-of-breed computing, storage and networking. You're very siloed in your infrastructure. Silos won't work well together. It's painful to deliver services to your customers. When something breaks, everybody begins pointing fingers at each other. That doesn't make for a very resilient data center. Tan said Broadcom's long-term approach will be to help customers overcome their challenges by taking the VMware services that customers have traditionally enjoyed using, such as the virtualization platform vSphere and the software-defined infrastructure NSX, and creating a single, unified stack through VCF: It's resilient, secure, costs less than the public cloud, and offers cloud sovereignty. Cloud sovereignty is a critical issue for all of us. VCF provides the ultimate sovereign cloud solution. We give you a cloud provider, delivering sovereign services that comply with national laws. The VCF platform should be seen as a starting point for hybrid provision. Tan said CIOs who want to make the most of the hybrid cloud will need additional features that help them use IT resources flexibly. It's here that Broadcom hopes Advanced Services will play a part. Advanced Services is a catalogue of ready-to-deploy solutions that help customers use their private cloud environments: VCF and Advanced Services is an ecosystem of partners and tools - security, disaster recovery, automation, ransomware, and now private AI. All these services run on VCF to give you the public cloud experience on-prem. To conclude, Tan returned to Broadcom's desire to boost simplicity across VMware products. He said Broadcom has already reduced the VMware set of products from 8,000 SKUs to four core offerings. Alongside this consolidation, he said Broadcom will continue to develop new services to make products easier to use: We continue to invest more to make our products easy to use, to work together, and to give you a robust catalogue of advanced services to run on VCF. At the event, Broadcom announced expansions to VMware Tanzu Data Services, which integrates with VCF to deliver automated lifecycle management, including deployment, backups, clustering, security patching, and updates for open-source data services. Broadcom also unveiled its VeloRAIN (Robust AI Networking) architecture, which improves the performance and security of distributed AI workloads, explained Chris Wolf, global head of private AI at Broadcom, during the keynote:
