ChatGPT is having a partial outage | TechCrunch
OpenAI experienced a partial outage on Tuesday morning that created some issues for users trying to access ChatGPT, Sora, and the API, the company said on its status page. The company started investigating the issues late on Monday night, but the partial outage has persisted through Tuesday morning. Around 5:30 am PT on Tuesday, OpenAI says it identified the issue and started working to fix it. However, at roughly 8 am PT, OpenAI said full recovery across its services may take "another few hours," meaning folks logging onto work on the West Coast of the United States won't be able to access ChatGPT this morning. While ChatGPT outages typically last just a few hours, Tuesday's partial outage is notably long in duration. The company said users may experience "elevated errors and latency" when using ChatGPT. When TechCrunch tried to access GPT-4o in ChatGPT on Tuesday morning, the chatbot responded with an error reading "Too many concurrent requests." Tuesday's partial outage comes amid a flurry of announcements from OpenAI. At Apple's WWDC event on Monday, the iPhone maker announced deeper integrations with OpenAI's models. Also on Monday, an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that the company has reached $10 billion in annualized recurring revenue. Earlier on Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced an 80% price cut for developers trying to access its o3 AI reasoning models in its API. OpenAI has previously run into issues scaling the usage of its AI models to hundreds of millions of users, but that's exactly what the company needs to do to meet its grand ambitions. Altman has previously said the company's "GPUs are melting" to keep up with the demand for ChatGPT, indicating that OpenAI's computing resources are spread thin these days. It seems that demand for OpenAI's models is only continuing to rise.

OpenAI is experiencing a widespread outage Tuesday morning that's affecting its ChatGPT AI chatbot service, as well as its Sora tool for AI-generated videos. The number of reported outages has continued to increase throughout the morning. An OpenAI representative responded via email, directing us to its post on X and its status page. Both stated that OpenAI is experiencing "elevated errors and latency" and that it has identified the root cause and is working to mitigate the underlying issue. The technical issues are also affecting OpenAI's APIs, which allow developers to tap into the company's AI models. The troubles been ongoing for seven hours, OpenAI noted, meaning they likely started around midnight PT. The Downdetector service also shows outage reports starting around that time and then spiking several hours later. (Downdetector is owned by Ziff Davis, which is also the parent company of CNET.) Launched in 2022, ChatGPT has become the most popular AI application ever released, with 400 million weekly users. A barrage of generative AI competitors have followed, including Meta AI, Google's Gemini and Microsoft's Copilot, but ChatGPT remains the leader largely because it's easy to use. At its Worldwide Developers Conference 2025, Apple even touted an expansion of its ChatGPT integration. The AI chatbot uses learning algorithms and large language models to process massive amounts of data from books and the internet, which it uses to deliver human-like responses to prompts from users. (Ziff Davis in April filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.) This is a developing story. Although OpenAI's ChatGPT may be among the most popular options, there are plenty of alternatives while it's down -- and many of them are free to use. Claude is our current favorite chatbot we've tested, and Claude even knew all the details about ChatGPT's outage, according to my colleague Jon Reed, CNET senior editor who covers AI. If you rely on ChatGPT's Dall-E 3 as your image generator, we'd recommend trying Leonardo.Ai for really creative work and Canva for free, beginner-friendly work. If you're looking for an alternative to Sora tool for AI-generated videos, we just checked out Microsoft's Bing Video Creator, which is super easy to use and live on mobile now.

ChatGPT is having some issues
Jess Weatherbed is a news writer focused on creative industries, computing, and internet culture. Jess started her career at TechRadar, covering news and hardware reviews. OpenAI's ChatGPT service is currently down for some users after the platform started experiencing performance issues on Tuesday morning. The chatbot responded with a "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong" error message to my colleague after failing to load, and users across X and Reddit are reporting platform outages. Downdetector is showing that issues started at around 3AM ET, with multiple regions impacted globally. OpenAI's own status page says that some users started experiencing "elevated error rates and latency" at that time, noting that the issues were affecting ChatGPT, its Sora text-to-video AI tool, and OpenAI APIs. As of 5:23AM ET, OpenAI has added a separate line for "elevated error rates on Sora." Some users are able to access ChatGPT, but finding that the service is sluggish and taking much longer than usual to respond. Others like myself are able to use the chatbot without any issues, so the outages and errors don't seem to be impacting every user. OpenAI says it's "continuing to investigate this issue." It's unclear what is causing the outages, or when regular service will be restored. We will update this page when we have further information.

Is ChatGPT still down for you? Here's when OpenAI expects to have it back up and running
The AI tool has been down for several hours as OpenAI acknowledges that the service is experiencing issues. Those of you who've tried to use ChatGPT over the past several hours may have noticed that the AI isn't its usual chatty, responsive self. It's not just you. The service seems to be down for a lot of people. Also: The best AI for coding in 2025 (and what not to use) Fire up ChatGPT and submit any request at the prompt. In return, the AI will tell you that there's an error in the message stream or that something seems to have gone wrong. The trouble is the same whether you use the ChatGPT website, the Windows or Mac app, or the iOS or Android app. Based on data sent by users to Downdetector, the ChatGPT outage started slowly at around 3 a.m. ET before spiking at around 5:30 a.m. at which time the number of reports reached more than 1,000. Since then, the volume of reports has dropped, but there's still an ongoing problem. (Downdetector is also owned by ZDNET's parent company, Ziff Davis.) On its own status page, OpenAI shows that the service is currently experiencing issues. One status update points to elevated error rates and latency affecting ChatGPT, the Sora text-to-video platform, and its APIs, all over the past several hours. Another more recent update focuses on Sora, again indicating elevated error rates. At 9:07 a.m., OpenAI revealed that it had identified the root cause of the issue and was working on fixing the problem. As of 10:54 a.m., the company said that it was continuing to work on the fix and was seeing some recovery to its APIs. However, full recovery across all its services, including ChatGPT and Sora, could take another few hours, OpenAI added. By 2 p.m. ET, a full 11 hours after the initial outage, OpenAI reported that it was still monitoring the fix and working toward a full recovery. Yes, ChatGPT and Sora are down for users all around the world
An unexpected outage has taken down OpenAI's ChatGPT, Sora, and API services. The company is aware and working on a fix. BleepingComputer reports that AI company OpenAI has suffered a major outage today affecting several of the company's AI services, including AI chatbot ChatGPT and AI video generator Sora. Though you can still access ChatGPT, it currently takes an unusually long time to respond and may end up responding with error messages. Similar issues with error rates and increased latency are affecting Sora and OpenAI's API, which could affect third-party services. According to Downdetector, thousands of users have been reporting outages, and the rate of reports hasn't slowed as of this writing. It's happening for users worldwide across web, mobile, and desktop apps. According to OpenAI's status tracker, the problem was first acknowledged at 2:36 AM this morning, and the issue is now marked as "Identified" with the company "still working on implementing the mitigation for this issue." It's unclear how long the fix could take.

ChatGPT Global Outage Drags on for Hours -- Here's What We Know - Decrypt
This follows previous ChatGPT outages in 2024 after GPT-4o expansion and Apple Intelligence integration, plus a 2023 DDoS attack linked to Russian hackers. OpenAI's ChatGPT, APIs, and Sora video service, have been experiencing a worldwide outage for the past three hours, according to the company. That would mean the issues started around 3 a.m. EST. "Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services. We are continuing to investigate the issue," the company wrote on its status website. The only OpenAI service that's currently working is its Playground, which allows users to more finely tune and experiment with AI models. At the time of writing, ChatGPT prompts Decrypt sent through a paid account were being met with "Error in message stream" responses in the browser and through the mobile app. The DownDetector website shows that hundreds of complaints about error messages have been pouring in, with 93% of them related to ChatGPT. ChatGPT has experienced outages before. The chatbot went dark this time last year after the company expanded access to its GPT-4o model to free users. Then it happened again after ChatGPT was integrated into Apple Intelligence in December. Back in November 2023, the company even dealt with a distributed denial of service, or DDoS, attach that was thought to be linked to Russian hackers. Even when there haven't been outages, researchers have at times said that the ChatGPT service was getting worse -- not better -- over time, which runs counter to the promises the company has made about its LLM. The company's status page shows that ChatGPT service was initially "degraded" starting on Monday, but within an hour the issue was marked as resolved.

OpenAI suffers major site outage
Users reported seeing an error message and instances of latency throughout the day. Generative AI chatbot function OpenAI has today (10 June) experienced widespread disruption to its services, as those attempting to use its features have issued reports from regions such as Australia, Egypt and the US, among others. According to TechRadar's live coverage, beginning this morning, OpenAI stated, "Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services" and that they were continuing to investigate the issue. By 11am Downdetector had reportedly received more than 1,000 reports. OpenAI, via their status page, explained that there are several affected components across the company's servers, which includes 14 affected API components, 21 affected ChatGPT components and 4 affected Sora components. Late in the afternoon OpenAI updated its page and said, "We are continuing to work on implementing the mitigation and we are now seeing recovery on API. Full recovery across all listed services may take another few hours. We will continue to provide updates as progress is made." Via its X page, the organisation stated it has determined the root cause and its technicians are working to rectify the problem as soon as possible. OpenAI and rival AI models are becoming increasingly popular worldwide and there is a growing increase in their use on a day-to-day basis by everyday people, as well as by professionals and organisations. OpenAI recently announced it would be expanding in Seoul, Korea, with a new office to be based there. The company has also experienced some recent legal woes as it appealed a court order which would force the AI provider to preserve its ChatGPT logs, citing the argument that the order is in direct conflict with OpenAI's commitment to privacy. Last month, a US district court judge decided that OpenAI needs to preserve and segregate all output log data. This includes the free, Plus, Pro and Team versions of ChatGPT, as well as its API. The plaintiffs have argued for the preservation of information, stating that this data is necessary to show that OpenAI's models copy, paraphrase and misattribute work in its output. A ChatGPT Outage Just Made Workers Everywhere Panic
"Suddenly ChatGPT goes down and I no longer know how to work ... so decide to take a break instead" wrote one user on X. There were similar sentiments expressed on Reddit, with one user writing "Millions forced to use brain as ChatGPT takes day off." "Productivity at 2021 levels," complained another user, clearly buying into the idea that using AI can boost work efficiency. "This is absolutely devastating π₯² I depended on it for the exam I'm preparing for and now every other AI app seems stupid," said another user -- supporting the idea that most students have already become reliant on AI tech to help them grease their way through their education. One commenter noted that there was a bigger business implication than the outage of the actual ChatGPT chatbot itself. "This but also APIs are being affected which will take down a lot of business automation and interfacing. My friend is a manager in tech support and her entire ticket system is frozen due to APIs being affected," they said. (And API is a kind of "handle" in an app's code that allows other apps and services to connect to it and use data from it to power their own app... the news here shows how hook-up ChatGPT is to other people's products.)

Before 2:30 p.m. ET, there had been a significant decrease in reports, with only 516, according to DownDetector. At its height, there were nearly 2,000 reports around 11 a.m. ET earlier in the day. Users take to social media to discuss outage Users took to social media platforms like X, formerly Twitter, to express their frustrations over the outage. What is ChatGPT? ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence chatbot launched in 2022 by OpenAI. As opposed to predictive AI, generative AI is trained on large amounts of data in order to identify patterns and create content of its own, including voices, music, pictures, and videos. ChatGPT allows users to interact with the chatting tool much like they could with another human, with the chatbot generating conversational responses to questions or prompts. Proponents say ChatGPT could reinvent online search engines and could assist with research, information writing, content creation, and customer service chatbots. However, the service has at times become controversial, with some critics raising concerns that ChatGPT and similar programs fuel online misinformation and enable students to plagiarize. ChatGPT faces global outage: Here's why it happened and who was affected most
#ChatGPTDown: OpenAI's ChatGPT suffered a major global outage on June 10, 2025, affecting users across India, the US, and the UK. Downdetector recorded thousands of complaints, with most users unable to access the chatbot or facing error messages. OpenAI confirmed the issue, which also impacted its video tool Sora and API services. While the cause remains unclear, the company is investigating. Social media buzzed with memes and frustration, highlighting the growing dependence on AI tools for everyday tasks. On Tuesday afternoon, OpenAI's ChatGPT went dark for users across the globe. The outage, which began around 2:45 PM IST and peaked shortly after 3:00 PM, left thousands unable to access the AI chatbot. India, the United States, and the United Kingdom were among the worst affected regions. According to Downdetector, a platform that tracks real-time service disruptions, India alone logged nearly 800 complaints. The US saw close to 1,100, while the UK reported over 1,450 issues. The majority of users -- about 93% -- reported that ChatGPT simply stopped responding. Others faced login loops, blank chat windows, or were abruptly logged out mid-conversation. Some received error messages like: "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong" and "A network error occurred. Please check your connection and try again." In India, 88% of complaints were about the chatbot not responding. Another 8% flagged issues with the mobile app, and 3% pointed to problems with the API. OpenAI acknowledged the disruption on its official system status page. The company stated, "Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services. We are continuing to investigate this issue." The outage also affected Sora, OpenAI's AI-powered video creation tool, and its GPT API services. In a follow-up update, OpenAI added, "We are continuing to investigate the issue for the listed services," noting that the disruption was causing "degraded performance." Despite the acknowledgement, OpenAI has not yet provided a timeline for when services will be fully restored. As the outage spread, users took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to vent. Screenshots of error messages, half-loaded chats, and login failures flooded timelines. Some users shared memes mocking the situation, while others expressed concern over lost work and interrupted tasks. As ChatGPT went silent, the internet got loud. Within minutes of the outage, social media platforms -- especially X (formerly Twitter) -- lit up with a mix of confusion, humour, and genuine frustration. Hashtags like #ChatGPTDown and #OpenAI began trending as users scrambled to confirm whether the issue was widespread or just their own connection acting up. One user summed up the collective sentiment with a post that read, "My work buddy is down again." Another joked, "How to write an email without ChatGPT?", accompanied by a meme of a panicked office worker. The humour didn't stop there. A popular meme showed a group of friends awkwardly sitting in silence, captioned, "Me and my friends when ChatGPT is down and we've forgotten how to talk to each other anymore." Others shared screenshots of blank chat windows, frozen loading bars, and error messages. Some were in the middle of important tasks -- writing reports, coding, or even composing emails -- when the chatbot abruptly stopped responding. For many, it wasn't just an inconvenience; it was a disruption to their workflow. One viral post read, "ChatGPT is down. How will I answer if someone asks me my name?" Another user posted a clip from the web series Panchayat, showing characters in a state of confusion, with the caption, "Me when ChatGPT is down." The outage also sparked a wave of self-deprecating humour. A widely shared tweet read, "It's time to use my brain. Scary." The incident highlighted just how deeply integrated AI tools like ChatGPT have become in daily routines -- from writing emails to coding, and even planning meals. The outage did not discriminate. Both free-tier users and ChatGPT Plus subscribers were impacted. The disruption was felt across devices and platforms, with most issues reported on the web version. Less than 10% of complaints were related to the mobile app. Even members of the Times of India Tech team experienced mixed results. Some were able to access the chatbot, while others received an "error in message stream" notification. Until the issue is resolved, users are advised not to refresh their sessions repeatedly or re-enter login credentials. Doing so may trigger additional security checks and won't speed up recovery. Downdetector's live outage map continues to show high concentrations of reports from North America, Europe, and India. While OpenAI has not confirmed the root cause, the scale and suddenness of the outage suggest a possible server-side overload or technical fault. Historically, similar outages have been resolved within a few hours. However, the lack of transparency this time has left users in the dark. The incident serves as a reminder of the growing dependence on AI tools -- and the vulnerabilities that come with it.

ChatGPT suffers global outage, affecting millions of users
The ChatGPT logo, a keyboard, and robot hands are seen in this illustration taken January 27, 2025 ChatGPT users around the world faced widespread problems on Tuesday morning as the popular AI chatbot displayed error messages instead of its usual responses. The outage began around 10:00 a.m. Israel time, and affected millions of users across multiple continents. Instead of getting answers, users saw messages like "Hmm... something seems to have gone wrong" and "A network error occurred." Both free users and ChatGPT Plus subscribers paying $20 per month were hit by the problems, showing the technical difficulties affected all service levels. DownDetector, which tracks internet service outages, recorded over 1,350 user reports about the problems. India alone saw around 800 complaints, with similar numbers in other countries. Social media users confirmed the global nature of the disruption. The problems weren't limited to ChatGPT. Sora, OpenAI's new text-to-video tool, also experienced similar issues. The company's API systems, which let developers integrate AI technology into their apps, were also affected. OpenAI confirmed the problems on its official status page, saying some users were experiencing "elevated error rates and latency" across its services. The company said it was "continuing to investigate this issue" but didn't give a timeline for fixing it. The outage affected users differently. Some could access ChatGPT but found it much slower than usual. Others couldn't use the service at all, while a few reported no problems. It appears more advanced AI models were hit harder, while basic versions kept working but slowly. This is the latest in a series of recent outages that have affected ChatGPT in recent months. Similar problems occurred in December, January, and March. 'If you see a plane going down, send help'Social media, especially X/Twitter, quickly filled with memes and reactions. One popular post read: "ChatGPT is down and I'm mid-flight piloting a plane with no idea how to land it. If you see a plane going down, send help." Another widely shared message said: "Everyone running to Twitter to check if ChatGPT is down for anyone else," while users posted images captioned "Corporate employees and students worldwide right now." The social media reactions showed how dependent users have become on the service. Many admitted they weren't sure how to do basic tasks without the chatbot. Some said the outage was a good chance to try competing services like Grok or Gemini. OpenAI hasn't said when normal service will return. The company is telling users to wait patiently and avoid repeatedly trying to refresh the service, which could make server problems worse. Sign up for the Business & Innovation Newsletter >>

Global Panic As OpenAI's ChatGPT Suffers Five-Hour Outage
Users are flooding ChatGPT's competitors as OpenAI's scrambles to patch things. ChatGPT users have raised an alarm over a lengthy network outage for the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. The downtime offers a glimpse into the future without AI tools amid skyrocketing dependence and adoption levels as OpenAI pushes for a quick fix. ChatGPT Hit By Massive Downtime, Sparking Unease For Users OpenAI's ChatGPT is facing a five-hour downtime that has left users in limbo, affecting mobile applications and web versions. Early reports of the service disruption first trickled in from outage tracking site Down Detector, with the outage affecting several regions. Several users are reporting an error message, while others are staring at blank screens with ChatGPT failing to load. The outage is reportedly affecting both paid and free users of the offering, with OpenAI's text-to-video model Sora facing its downtime. OpenAI has confirmed the technical issue, noting that it has identified the cause and is working to patch the glitch. While details remain sparse, there are reports that the downtime is linked to internal errors like software bugs or benign issues such as a traffic overload. However, there is still the grim possibility of a cyberattack behind the outage. "We have identified the root cause for the issue causing elevated errors and latency across the listed services," said OpenAI. "We are working on implementing a mitigation." This is not the first time ChatGPT has faced an outage, with a January downtime rocking the boat for the company and users alike. A Wave Of Problems For OpenAI The network outage has fueled a migration of users to OpenAI rivals like Claude, Gemini, and Grok. As Sora remains unavailable, users are leaning on other video generator offerings for their daily tasks. A system status report from OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT had 21 components affected, with the API platform with 14. However, Sora has four of its components affected by the technical glitch. While OpenAI deals with the outage, the AI firm is also facing legal action from Elon Musk. Global Outage Hits ChatGPT: India Among Worst Affected
OpenAI's popular AI tool ChatGPT faced a major outage on June 10, leaving thousands of users across the world unable to access its services. The disruption affected people in many countries, with India, the United States (US), and the United Kingdom (UK) among the most affected. The outage started around 2:45 PM (IST) and quickly got worse. Many users complained they could not send or receive messages on ChatGPT. Others were stuck in login loops, faced blank screens, or were suddenly logged out. According to Downdetector, a website that tracks service issues, India recorded nearly 800 complaints. In the US, the number was around 1,100, and the UK saw over 1,450 reports. Most users said the chatbot simply stopped working. In India, 88% of the complaints were about ChatGPT not responding, while others mentioned problems with the app and developer tools like the API. Some users who tried to access the service saw error messages like "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong" or "A network error occurred". OpenAI confirmed the problem on its system status page. "Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services. We are continuing to investigate this issue," the company said. It added that the outage was also affecting Sora, its video creation platform, and the GPT API used by developers. Both free users and paid subscribers were affected by the outage. Most problems were reported from desktop browsers, but some mobile users also faced issues. However, OpenAI did not give a clear timeline for the resolution of the error. This is not the first time ChatGPT has gone offline. In fact, it has experienced multiple outages in recent months, often during periods of heavy traffic or after major updates. Outages like these are no longer just a technical inconvenience -- they have global ripple effects. As of March 31, 2025, OpenAI reported that ChatGPT had over 500 million weekly active users, underlining how deeply embedded the chatbot has become in daily digital life - and India is leading this AI surge. According to venture capitalist Mary Meeker's 2025 Internet Trends Report, India has now surpassed the US in ChatGPT usage, accounting for 13.5% of all monthly active users globally, compared to 8.9% in the US and 5.7% in Indonesia. This consequently makes India the largest user base for the AI chatbot tool. Interestingly, this AI adoption trend is not limited to just ChatGPT. India also ranks third in the usage of DeepSeek, a Chinese AI assistant, with 6.9% of global users -- only behind China (33.9%) and Russia (9.2%). With millions of Indians increasingly depending on AI tools for education, content creation, customer service, business operations, and creative work, such outages can have real-world consequences, such as: As India continues to rise as a global hub for AI usage, these technical glitches serve as a reminder: scaling AI access must go hand-in-hand with building reliable, resilient AI infrastructure.
