Believe it or not, ChatGPT gets over 1 billion messages every single day
There has been a lot of talk about AI chatbots over the past few years, but how much are they actually used? OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman shared in a tweet (spotted by MSPoweruser) some figures that blew us away. ChatGPT apparently has 300 million weekly active users, and the AI chatbot receives over 1 billion messages every day. Altman also boasts that over 1.3 million developers in the US alone have built upon OpenAI for various tools and services. Maybe that isn't too surprising when you consider how ChatGPT can improve day-to-day life. This growth is quite stark when you look at where ChatGPT was last year. In February 2023, it crossed the 100 million weekly active users milestone, so it's clear that things are still looking up. If you're one of those active users, make sure you aren't sharing any personal data in your ChatGPT messages, else it might come back to haunt you. We'll be seeing more of OpenAI in the coming weeks, as the company announced that starting today it will be holding 12 days of livestreams, one per day, with "a bunch of new things, big and small" being revealed and discussed in each one. The video-generating AI tool called Sora might be one of them!

ChatGPT Reaches 300 Million Weekly Active Users | PYMNTS.com
ChatGPT now has 300 million weekly active users, OpenAI said Wednesday (Dec. 4). The company also said in a post on X that 1 billion user messages are sent on the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot every day and that 1.3 million developers have built on OpenAI in the United States. Friar also said at the time that 5% to 6% of free users sign up for the paid product and that 75% of the company's revenue comes from subscriptions. It was reported Saturday (Nov. 30) that OpenAI aims to get to 1 billion users over the next year and that the company anticipates a new phase of growth driven by new products, new data centers and its partnership with Apple. "[In 2025] we will be coming into our own, as a research lab serving millions ... hoping it can be billions of consumers around the world," Friar told the Financial Times. ChatGPT turned 2 years old on the weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 1, and the market capitalization for the six largest tech companies has increased -- in aggregate -- by more than $8 trillion since its debut as they reap the rewards from the AI boom, Bloomberg News columnists Parmy Olson and Carolyn Silverman wrote in an opinion piece. On Tuesday (Dec. 3), OpenAI named its first chief marketing officer (CMO): current Coinbase CMO Kate Rouch. "Her experience across consumer and enterprise marketing will shape how we connect people to the transformative power of AI," OpenAI said in a post on X. It was reported Nov. 27 that the company was bolstering its sales staff as it works to capitalize on a "paradigm shift" in corporate AI spending and tries to achieve $100 billion in revenue by 2029. The company has been landing new contracts with healthcare, manufacturing and legal companies, OpenAI Chief Commercial Officer Giancarlo "GC" Lionetti told The Information. To close similar deals, the company has been bolstering its sales team, which now accounts for close to 20% of its 1,600-member workforce.

ChatGPT now has over 300 million weekly users
ChatGPT now has over 300 million people using the AI chatbot each week. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed the milestone during The New York Times' DealBook Summit on Wednesday, which comes just months after ChatGPT hit 200 million weekly users in August. "Our product has scaled ... now we have more than 300 million weekly active users," Altman said. "We have users sending more than 1 billion messages per day to ChatGPT." ChatGPT has grown rapidly since its launch in 2022 as OpenAI continues to add more capabilities, such as its AI search engine that surfaces and summarizes results from across the web (though they may not always be accurate), and a new "Canvas" interface that lets users more easily adjust code written by the chatbot. Apple is also building ChatGPT directly into Siri as part of iOS 18.2, which is now available in beta and is poised to help the chatbot reach even more users.

OpenAI's active user count soars to 300 million people per week
Sam Altman, co-founder and C.E.O. of OpenAI, speaks during the New York Times annual DealBook summit at Jazz at Lincoln Center on December 04, 2024 in New York City. After months of C-suite changes, tender offers and a soaring valuation, OpenAI has reached a new milestone: 300 million weekly active users. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed the new figure Wednesday at The New York Times' DealBook Summit. A source familiar with the company told CNBC last week that the company's weekly active user count was still at 250 million. Over the next year, though, the company is reportedly targeting 1 billion active users. It's part of a serious growth plan for OpenAI, as the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence startup battles Amazon-backed Anthropic and Elon Musk's xAI, the latter of which Altman said he views as a "fierce competitor" on Wednesday at DealBook. The company is also up against established tech giants like Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon for a bigger slice of the generative AI market, which is predicted to top $1 trillion in revenue within a decade. OpenAI on Tuesday announced it had hired its first chief marketing officer, nabbing Kate Rouch from crypto company Coinbase -- an indication that it plans to spend more on marketing to grow its user base. In October, OpenAI debuted a search feature within ChatGPT that positions it to better compete with search engines like Google, Microsoft's Bing and Perplexity and may attract more users who otherwise visited those sites to search the web. Also at DealBook on Wednesday, Altman denied reports that the company had asked investors not to also invest in its competitors but said that those who decide to wouldn't have access to OpenAI's "information rights," like the company's roadmap and other materials. OpenAI's valuation has climbed to $157 billion in the two years since it launched ChatGPT, raising about $13 billion from Microsoft. The company closed its latest $6.6 billion round in October and received a $4 billion revolving line of credit. As of last week, OpenAI is allowing employees to sell about $1.5 billion worth of shares in a new tender offer to SoftBank.
