Google rolls out ChromeOS 130 with new AI-powered features, productivity tools, and user experience improvements for Chromebooks and Chromebook Plus devices.

ChromeOS 130 Introduces AI-Powered Features and Productivity Enhancements

Google has released a major update to its ChromeOS, version 130, bringing a host of new features and improvements to Chromebooks and Chromebook Plus devices. This update focuses on enhancing productivity, introducing AI-powered tools, and improving the overall user experience.

New Productivity Tools

One of the key additions is the Quick Insert feature, which allows users to easily input emojis, symbols, GIFs, links, and calculations. While some Chromebooks, like the Galaxy Chromebook Plus, have a dedicated Quick Insert key, all ChromeOS devices can access this feature using the Launcher + F keyboard shortcut 12.

The update also introduces a Focus mode, designed to boost productivity by enabling Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, integrating Google Tasks, and offering curated playlists through YouTube Music Premium. This feature aims to minimize distractions and help users concentrate on their work 12.

AI-Powered Enhancements

ChromeOS 130 brings several AI-powered features to the platform:

  1. Recorder App: Similar to the one found on Pixel phones, this new app offers on-device transcription capabilities. Chromebook Plus devices get additional features like title suggestions and three-point summaries 24.

  2. Studio-style Mic: This AI-enhanced audio feature improves the built-in microphone's sound quality, simulating a professional studio microphone. It builds upon existing noise cancellation and de-reverberation effects 34.

  3. Help Me Read: Available on Chromebook Plus devices, this feature uses AI to summarize websites and PDFs, allowing users to ask questions about the content 2.

User Experience Improvements

The update includes several enhancements to improve the overall user experience:

  1. Welcome Recap: This feature helps users quickly resume their previous work session by displaying recently used apps and files upon startup 12.

  2. Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Enhancements: PiP windows can now be easily resized and docked to the side of the screen for better multitasking 34.

  3. Multi-Calendar Support: Users can now view events from multiple Google Calendar accounts 4.

  4. Improved Settings: New options for adjusting keyboard backlight brightness and screen brightness have been added to the Settings menu 24.

Availability and Rollout

ChromeOS 130 is currently being rolled out to all users and should be available on most devices in the coming days. Some features, particularly those related to AI, may be exclusive to Chromebook Plus devices 123.

This update represents a significant step forward for ChromeOS, incorporating AI technologies and productivity features that aim to enhance the platform's competitiveness in the personal computing market.
