Google's bringing Gemini to your car with Android Auto | TechCrunch
Google is bringing Gemini, its generative AI, to all cars that support Android Auto in the next few months, the company announced at its Android Show ahead of the company's 2025 I/O developer conference. The company says adding Gemini functionality to Android Auto and, later this year, to cars that run Google's built-in operating system, will make driving "more productive -- and fun" in a blog post. "This is really going to be, we think, one of the largest transformations in the in-vehicle experience that we've seen in a very, very long time," Patrick Brady, the VP of Android for Cars, said during a virtual briefing with members of the media ahead of the conference. Gemini will surface in the Android Auto experience in two main ways. Gemini will act as a much more powerful smart voice assistant. Drivers (or passengers -- Brady said they are not voice-matching to whoever owns the phone running the Android Auto experience) will be able to ask Gemini to send texts, play music, and basically do all the things Google Assistant was already able to do. The difference is users won't have to be so robotic with their commands thanks to the natural language capabilities of Gemini. Gemini can also "remember" things like whether a contact prefers receiving text messages in a particular language, and handle that translation for the user. And Google claims Gemini will be capable of doing one of the most commonly-paraded in-car tech demos: finding good restaurants along a planned route. Of course, Brady said Gemini will be able to mine Google listings and reviews to respond to more specific requests (like "taco places with vegan options"). The other main way Gemini will surface is with what Google is calling "Gemini Live," which is an option where the digital AI is essentially always listening and ready to engage in full conversations about ... whatever. Brady said those conversations could be about everything from travel ideas for spring break, to brainstorming recipes a 10-year-old would like, to "Roman history." If that all sounds a bit distracting, Brady said Google believes it won't be. He claimed the natural language capabilities will make it easier to ask Android Auto to do specific tasks with less fuss, and therefore Gemini will "reduce cognitive load." It's a bold claim to make at a time when people are clamoring for car companies to move away from touchscreens and bring back physical knobs and buttons -- a request many of those companies are starting to oblige. There's a lot still being sorted out. For now, Gemini will leverage Google's cloud processing to operate in both Android Auto and on cars with Google Built-In. But Brady said Google is working with automakers "to build in more compute so that [Gemnini] can run at the edge," which would help not only with performance but with reliability -- a challenging factor in a moving vehicle that may be latching onto new cell towers every few minutes. Modern cars also generate a lot of data from onboard sensors, and on some models, even interior and exterior cameras. Brady said Google has "nothing to announce" about whether Gemini could leverage that multi-modal data, and that "we've been talking about that a lot." "We definitely think as cars have more and more cameras, there's some really, really interesting use cases in the future here," he said. Gemini on Android Auto and Google Built-In will be coming to all countries that already have access to the company's generative AI model, and will support more than 40 languages.

Google is upgrading Android Auto in 5 useful ways - including a big one for voice inputs
According to Google, there are over 250 million cars that support Android Auto today, and more than 50 car models with Google built directly into the infotainment system. Those vehicles are about to get a lot smarter, as Gemini is coming to Android Auto. Also: Finally, I found an Android Auto adapter that's highly functional, lag-free, and priced well Gemini for Android Auto will work the same as it does everywhere else, meaning you'll have access to conversations, insight, helpful advice, and more. Here's a look at just a few of the unique ways you can use Gemini on the go in Android Auto. If hunger hits while you're driving, Gemini can help you find what you're looking for. Just ask Gemini to "find great burger places along the way," and you'll get a list of restaurants that specialize in them. You can ask for insight from reviews or ask common questions like what the hours are. Once you've decided, Gemini can connect to Google Maps to get you there. If you have an important conversation or call, you can tap into Gemini's conversational skills to prepare without taking your hands off the wheel. Just say, "Hey Google, let's talk," to start things off. Ask Gemini something like, "I need to have a conversation with my boss about a new promotion. How do I go about this?" and you'll get some strategic tips on what to say. Also: 5 reasons your Android Auto keeps disconnecting - and how to fix it today It's not just work-related, though. You can ask Gemini for help with any type of conversation -- what to say for a gentle breakup, how to resolve conflict with a friend, how to discuss finances with a partner, and so on. Sending a message to someone who speaks another language can be tricky, especially if you're using your voice while you're on the go. You can ask Gemini to always send messages to a certain contact in a certain language (for example, "always send messages to John in Spanish"). The next time you text that person, Gemini can help you craft the message instead of translating verbatim -- helping more context come through. Forget where your kid's soccer game is this week? You can ask Gemini to find it for you. If the location is lost in a sea of emails, tell Gemini to track it down, and it will find the relevant information. Want to walk into work prepared? Ask Gemini to tell you what's on your Google Calendar. Also: Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro update makes the AI model even better at coding If you're not a fan of Gemini, Android Auto is getting several standalone upgrades, too. Google says that the app catalog has been expanding to include more categories like games and video, and it's expanding the digital car key feature to more vehicles, like Audi, Volvo, and Polestar. Gemini will be available on cars that support Android Auto in the next few months, Google said, and in cars that have Google built-in, like the Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5, and Honda Passport, later this year. Gemini is hitting the road with Android Auto: 5 ways to (safely) use it while driving

Your Android devices are getting a major Gemini upgrade - cars and watches included
Thanks to Google's next big Android update, you'll soon be able to talk to the capable AI assistant everywhere. Ahead of next week's Google I/O developer conference, where AI is expected to be the star of the show, Google on Tuesday unveiled a massive Gemini update, further expanding the AI assistant's availability across the Google ecosystem of devices. For starters, Google announced that Gemini will be coming to WearOS smartwatches later this year. This will allow users to take advantage of Gemini's conversational capabilities and talk to their watches naturally. The biggest advantage is that users can take advantage of hands-free assistance without the help of their phones. Also: The best Android smartwatches: Expert tested and reviewed Some examples Google offers include setting reminders, getting assistance when your hands are covered in flour while cooking, or in the middle of a workout. Similarly, Android Auto's voice assistant is being upgraded to Gemini from Google Assistant, allowing for hands-free conversational assistance in the car, too. Google suggests some useful Gemini opportunities on the road, including finding a destination through a specific description, such as "a charging station on the way to the post office that's also near a park," and summarizing and even translating your text messages. Also: Finally, I found an Android Auto adapter that's highly functional, lag-free, and priced well Because Gemini Live can have multi-turn conversations with users, you can also use it to just chat about current events, get a personalized news digest, or get the answer to any burning question on your mind. This update is also coming soon. According to Google, Gemini will be available on Android Auto in the coming months, followed by cars with Google built-in. You guessed it: Gemini will also be available on your Google TV later this year, making the same conversational capabilities available on the biggest screen in your home. Beyond the Gemini assistance it typically gives, Gemini can also help with TV recommendations, such as finding the best content to watch that suits specific criteria. Also: Netflix's new AI search feature makes it easier to find what to watch I had the opportunity to demo this experience at CES 2025 and was impressed with how much more helpful a voice assistant on your TV is when it can use conversational terms instead of keywords. In my demo, the voice assistant asked to see movies like Jurassic Park, but for kids, and Gemini immediately showed results. Google is also launching a new platform built in collaboration with Samsung that combines Gemini with Android XR, Google's operating platform for extended reality devices (XR) such as headsets. When Samsung's first headset launches later this year, Gemini will be able to offer users its advanced assistance while also taking advantage of the XR element, surrounding them with helpful content. According to Google, the new platform will also be used on future devices, including headsets, glasses, and everything in between.

Gemini Everywhere: Google Expands Its AI to Cars, TVs, Headsets
The car version of Gemini will first be available on Android Auto in the coming months and later this year on Google built-in. Android 16 will complete the replacement of the Google Assistant with Gemini Live, the no-subscription-needed chatbot offshoot of its Gemini AI platform. It brings that AI assistant to devices beyond phones, and not just to the watches that you might expect, but also to cars, TVs, and extended-reality headsets. In a press roundtable ahead of Tuesday's pre-I/O "Android Show," Google representatives emphasized that it won't be the same Gemini in all these contexts. The AI will also come with different requirements for connectivity. For example, the Gemini experience in Wear OS and Android Auto will require a data connection, said Guemmy Kim, senior director of product and UX for Android. But in cars with Google built-in, such as Ford and Polestar, Gemini will offer limited offline support. Gemini's answers to spoken-word queries from drivers and passengers should also be shorter, although some of the sample questions shown off in the roundtable did not seem to be short-form material. (For example: "Can you give me a quick rundown of the news today, but leave out sports?") The touted support for translating messages may also lead to prolonged conversations with Gemini Live. The car version of Gemini will first be available on Android Auto in the coming months and later this year on Google built-in. Gemini's appearance in Google TV is also booked for sometime later in 2025, but it's not clear which existing models will get updates. Android communications manager Kaori Miyake didn't get into specifics when asked about that in the roundtable, although she did call out TCL as one of the vendors that Google has been working with. How Gemini will surface in Android XR, a platform that Google is building in collaboration with Samsung, remains unclear. For that and other aspects of Google's software future, I/O itself-with a keynote starting at 10 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday, May 20, may offer more details.

Google is bringing Gemini to Wear OS, Android Auto and more
Google is bringing Gemini to more devices. During Tuesday's airing of The Android Show: I/O Edition, the company said its family of AI models would soon power the conversational experiences on Android Auto, Wear OS, Google TV and beyond. I know what you're thinking: don't those platforms already come with Google Assistant? They do, but Google is promising Gemini will make every device it comes to more conversational. For instance, once Gemini arrives on Wear OS, Google says you won't need to get the wording of your request just right for the software to understand you. Instead, you can say something like "Remember I'm using locker 43 today," and Gemini will know to set a reminder for you. Google is promising similar enhancements on Android Auto, where Google Assistant has been an important part of the experience for years. "Soon, Gemini will upgrade that experience by understanding what you want while you're driving, through natural conversations," the company says. "So instead of focusing on the perfect prompt or tapping the right button, you can stay focused on the road ahead." In practice, that means Gemini will be able to do things like summarize text messages for you and translate them into more than 40 languages. With its ability to "remember" things, you can do things like tell Gemini to always send messages to a specific friend in Spanish, even though you might not speak the language. Google will start rolling out Gemini to Android Auto in the coming months, with cars with Google built-in to follow later this year. Elsewhere, Google is building Android XR from the ground up with Gemini built-in. "When the first headset from Samsung launches later this year, Gemini can help you do things like plan a vacation by surrounding you with videos, maps and local tips, creating an entire itinerary in minutes while providing a more realistic feel for the place you're researching," the company says. In the coming months, Google will also bring Gemini to Google TV. As you can probably guess, here Gemini will augment recommendations. Specifically, you can expect better age-appropriate suggestions for your kids. The model will also give Google TV the capability to answer any questions your children might have about what they're watching. Last but not least, Google says Sony and Samsung will bring Gemini to some of the new earbuds the two companies plan to release this year and into the future. No details yet on what to expect there, but like on Wear OS and Android Auto, presumably the addition of Gemini will help make those earbuds better at understanding what you say to them.

Gemini on Android Auto Could Be Your Hands-Free Wingman
But don't imagine you'll use Gemini in Android Auto to rehearse talking to your boss. Google’s Gemini AI is mowing down the age-old Google Assistant as it rushes in to set up shop on Android Auto. Soon, users will be asked to have “conversations†with their car all while they have their hands on 10 and 2. Unlike AI on your phone or smartwatch, Gemini’s true use case could be the car if nothing else than helping you keep your eyes on the road and not on the car’s many distracting screens. We’ve already seen some of these capabilities at work based on dormant code installed in the latest Android update. Those earlier versions seemed less than helpful since they wouldn’t interact with apps like Google Maps. What Google showed on Tuesday includes a new UI for interacting with the AI through your car. Gemini appears at the bottom of the car’s screen with the typical glowing bottom bezel. Users should be able to ask the chatbot for help in a “conversational†manner without needing to use the specific prompts that Google’s previous voice assistant required. The best example of this is from a video where Google asks Gemini for help finding a place to eat while on the road. Google’s AI should be able to connect with Google Maps and show you a list of potential destinations. The driver then asked the AI for reviews about one of the eateries and received a summary based on user reviews. As somebody who has been in the situation when I needed to find a gas station on a cross-state drive without taking a several-mile detour off the nearest exit, Gemini at least offers an inkling of a far safer alternative to fiddling with a phone or display. Google promoted a few other features in its blog, including the ability to send messages over voice to a friend and have those messages automatically translated into a different language (there are 40 languages available currently). Gemini will also connect with YouTube Music and Spotify, along with Gmail and Messages, for hands-free, eyes-free texting. If these features help you ignore the screen that car manufacturers are obsessed with sticking in place of every dashboard and previously manual control, then it's a boon to drivers. What may be more distracting is the Gemini Live integration with your car. If you tell your car, “Hey Google, let’s talk,†you’ll bring up the Live interface that will let you hold a “conversation†with the AI. Perhaps the AI will be helpful at calming down my road rage as I get stuck behind yet another accident on New York’s Belt Parkway, or it may end up the target of my ire. The features should come to users’ devices “in the coming months†but will be available to cars with Google built-in after that. Google plans to show off these features at its Google I/O set to begin May 20. We already knew that Google was planning to add support for some games in the car, but the Android maker said it wanted to add more support for video as well. These features should only work when you’re parked, and they could prove a handy distraction for rowdy kids in the backseat. Still, if it emphasizes companies sticking even more screens in cars, the trade-off isn’t going to be worth it.

Google Assistant's time is up, make way for Gemini on Wear OS
Users will be able to talk with Gemini right from their smartwatch. It's been a process in the making, but Google has gradually been replacing Assistant with Gemini on a growing number of products. In January, we discovered through an APK teardown that Wear OS would be the next destination for Gemini's expansion. That expansion is now about to start as Google prepares to integrate the AI into your smartwatch. Today, Google officially announced that Gemini is headed to Wear OS devices. It may take some time before the AI arrives on your wrist, however, as Google says the rollout will happen in the coming months. Once Gemini becomes a part of your smartwatch experience, you'll be able to use it to navigate your day just as you would if you were on your phone. However, it may be even more handy as you'll be able to talk with Gemini in all kinds of situations where using your phone may not be the best option. For example, if you're cooking and your hands are dirty, or while you're riding a bike. As Gemini is a large language model (LLM), you won't have to use any specific words to interact with it; you can just use natural language. But you won't just be able to talk with Gemini, as the AI can connect to your apps. So, you'll be able to use the AI for functions like setting reminders or asking about that restaurant your friend emailed you about.

Google's own TV Streamer won't be first in line as Gemini heads to your living room
Summary Gemini is expanding to Android Auto and Google TV. Unfortunately, Gemini won't be coming to Google's TV Steamer first. It will instead make its debut on TCL products towards the end of the year. Things are about to get exciting for Google fans with Google I/O set to take place in just a week's time. While we'll no doubt get some spicy information from the event, there's simply just too much to share, which is why the brand delivered an abundance of Android news during The Android Show: I/O Edition. Related Gemini is coming to Android Auto later this year, with shorter responses in tow Keeping safety front of mind Posts And while we learned that Android 16 will make its way to devices next month, and a new look for the OS will eventually make its debut, perhaps the most important news we got today is that Gemini is expanding to other devices and platforms. In addition to Android Auto, Gemini is going to be coming to Google TV. But in a bit of a twist, the update won't come to Google's devices first. Google won't get first dibs The folks at Android Authority were able to confirm that Gemini will make an appearance on TCL products first. That means that you'll have to wait just a bit longer if you're someone that owns a Google TV Streamer. In addition, Google did not share when the update would arrive for its own devices, so this is just going to be a bit of a waiting game for device owners. Google is also in talks with other companies as well, so there's a pretty good chance that we'll see Gemini find its way to other TV products as well. The introduction of Gemini to Google TV should be a pretty big deal, allowing users to speak more naturally to get things down. While Google Assistant was a pretty big deal up until this point, it looks to be taking a backseat since AI has been the focus for Google. Of course, we're in the very early stages of Gemini, and as we've seen, in just a couple of years, things have gotten dramatically better, which means that we should see even more improvements as more time passes. If you've yet to give Gemini a try, you may want to download it on your phone or tablet to see what it's all about. You can have natural conversation with AI, it can break down complex topics into easy-to-read chunks, and it even has the ability to take action across a variety of supported apps, which can make interactions much easier.

Google's Gemini Is Now In Your Car, Too
Summary Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on various Android devices including smartwatches and cars. In addition to AI capabilities, Gemini offers features like message summaries and personalized news. Gemini will be available on Wear OS, Android Auto, and Google TV in the coming months for enhanced assistant and app integration. Google Assistant is officially dead, as Google started to kill it off in a staged manner to make Gemini everyone's default assistant. And the few places where it's still present are slowly but steadily getting moved to Gemini. Now, Gemini is landing in more places, including your car. Google has announced that Gemini, which is mainly an AI chatbot but doubles as an assistant for performing tasks within your phone, is coming to a wide array of Android-powered devices aside from just phones and tablets. Gemini is landing on everything from smartwatches to cars, to TVs, and everything in between. The chatbot is making an appearance on Wear OS, announced as part of Wear OS 6, though it's not clear if it will be exclusive to that operating system or if it will come to previous OS versions as well. Gemini is taking the Google Assistant's place as the assistant of choice for smartwatch users. With the power of AI, you should be able to speak to it more naturally and less robotically, and it should be able to comply with a wide array of requests. You can use it to set reminders, and you can use it for things like saving a locker number at the gym or retrieving details about a restaurant mentioned in an email, directly on the watch without needing to use a phone. In your car, you can use it for things like finding a charging station along a route. Like with Wear OS, it's replacing the regular Assistant experience in Android Auto. Gemini will, among other things, connect to messaging apps to summarize incoming messages and translate replies before sending, which is good when you're behind the wheel and can't really type out responses. Gemini Live is also available for longer commutes, so you can talk to the AI like a good old friend. It will also offer personalized news summaries (with the option to exclude specific topics like sports) or provide synopses of books. Related Google's Gemini Just Got a Lot Better With Images We've needed this. Posts Finally, Gemini is also coming to Google TV, where it can serve as a useful assistant for discovering new shows or movies within streaming services, or you can give it requests such as ultra-specific recommendations. Google TV also works as a smart home hub, though it's not clear if Gemini will integrate with that just yet. Gemini on all three of these places will land over the coming months. Contrary to the mobile app, the Google TV and Wear OS versions of Gemini seem to lean more on the assistant and app integration side, while the Android Auto version has full Gemini Live support, so you can talk to your car while you drive. Gemini is still replacing Assistant on Google TV, but not until 'later this year'
Google TV is going to see a significant shift in the coming months. Instead of the Google Assistant users have been used to interacting with for basic needs, Gemini will be the new AI helper. Gemini's integration will be similar to what's seen on Android devices, though it'll be tuned for entertainment and education. Google Gemini for Android was seemingly just the starting point. Over the last year, the AI model Google has been working on diligently has slowly begun to replace Google Assistant. That takeover is making it's way to TVs, as well. Google announced that Gemini for TVs is still very much in the pipeline, but it wouldn't be coming until "later this year." Considering we're halfway through 2025, this could mean anywhere in the next three or 5 months. We were hoping to see the switch from Google Assistant sooner, but it's seemingly going to take some more time. At CES 2025, we got a good preview of what Gemini for Google TV looks like. Rather than the fundamental question and answer Google Assistant provides, Gemini goes a little deeper. The LLM offers more in-depth information on the topic at hand, much like the Gemini we know in Android. Beyond that, the model is tuned to offer TV shows or movies with specific parameters. That includes kid-friendly shows or movies about particular topics. Gemini will also change certain aspects of your TV, depending on the model. A new "on-screen hub" will eventually act as an information board when you're near the TV, thanks to proximity sensors. It was initially thought that Google might house this new advanced model under the Google Assistant moniker, but it looks like Gemini will perform a complete takeover, with the "Assistant" branding being retired during the rollout. This aligns with how the model is presented in other facets of Google. Of course, all of that will be available when Gemini for TVs actually rolls out. No date has been set, but it's expected sometime before 2026.

Google is taking Gemini beyond smartphones -- here's what's coming
Those Gemini plans were a highlight of The Android Show: I/O Edition taking place today (May 13) ahead of the company's annual developer conference next week. In addition, Guemmy Kim, senior director of product and user experience at Google, expanded on the company's Gemini plans in a blog post timed in conjunction with the Android event. According to Kim, Google plans to bring the majority of Gemini's most helpful features, such as Gemini Live's camera and screen sharing capabilities, to "billions of Android devices," with no subscription required. To start off, Google is looking to Gemini to WearOS smartwatches, meaning we could see the AI tool on both the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and the Google Pixel Watch 3 at the least. The addition of Gemini will mean that you can talk to the chatbot without having to take your phone out of your pocket, which is a godsend when your hands aren't free and you need some AI guidance. On top of that, Google Gemini will be able to connect with your phone apps, meaning that you can request more information about emails or texts and get the relevant information on your wrist. Google is also bringing Gemini to Android Auto -- a long-awaited addition for some people. According to the blog, Gemini will enhance the experience that Google Assistant currently provides in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Specifically, Google says Gemini will be able to understand "what you want while you're driving, through natural conversations." This will allow you to keep your focus on the road, rather than trying to find the right way to speak to your AI Assistant. Gemini will do more than just offer helpful suggestions, though. It will also connect with your messaging app, providing summaries of incoming messages. You'll be able to tap into translation features from behind the wheel, too. In addition to summaries of texts and emails, Gemini can offer a rundown of your tasks for the day or a synopsis of a book. Gemini will arrive in Android Auto in the coming months, followed by integration into Google Built-in cars. Google TV will also see a wealth of new capabilities thanks to Gemini integration, highlighted by more refined search options. As an example, Google says you'll be able to search for age-appropriate action movies if you want to watch something with your kids. However, Gemini can do more than just search for movies on your Google TV -- you'll also be able to get answers to questions as you would with an assistant on your phone. Gemini will look for responses on the web, even bringing up relevant YouTube videos if it can answer your question. Finally, Google will pair Gemini with Android XR, the new operating platform for mixed reality headsets and glasses the company's been developing with Samsung and Qualcomm. Google says it's looking to "craft new ways to interact with the next generation of devices from headsets to glasses and everything in between." Samsung has indicated it's releasing the Project Moohan headset later this year, and when it does arrive, Gemini will come included. That could lead to some pretty impressive features. Google says you'll be able to use Gemini to quickly plan a holiday on the headset, with maps, videos and tips floating up before you for a more immersive and engaging experience that will help give you a sense of place. Overall, the integration of Google Gemini into more devices is certainly an exciting development, and we're looking forward to trying out the AI chatbot on some of the devices Google outlined.

Smarter Wearables: Google Gemini Is Coming to Samsung Galaxy Watch and Buds
Your Galaxy wearables are about to get even smarter in the coming months. Google Gemini is set to debut on Samsung Galaxy Watches, making its first integration into the Galaxy wearable lineup. Moreover, activating Gemini will be smoother than ever when paired with the Galaxy Buds3 series. This update will extend AI functionalities across the entire Galaxy ecosystem, creating a more cohesive and intelligent user experience. With Gemini on your Galaxy Watch, you can get hands-free assistance using natural voice commands to stay productive on the move. When running on the treadmill at the gym, simply ask Gemini to "Remember I'm using locker 43 today" so you can focus on your workout without a second thought. Or when you receive an important email while your hands are tied up carrying groceries, just ask Gemini to "Summarize my last email" for a quick overview. Gemini handles these requests across your apps, letting you quickly glance at the response and get right back to what you're doing. When used with Galaxy Buds, the Gemini experience becomes even more seamless. By using voice or pinch and hold controls, you can activate Gemini on your Galaxy Buds and smoothly interact with your Galaxy smartphone. So when you are lacing up your running shoes before a jog, just ask Gemini, "What's the weather for my run today?" without having to reach for your phone. With Gemini, a more intelligent Galaxy experience is at your fingertips.

Google's Gemini AI is coming for your car, watch, and TV
With Wear OS in the coming months, Google Pixel Watch users will be able to verbally give Gemini reminders or ask it to pull up event details, such as upcoming dinner reservations. Because of Gemini integration across Google Workspace apps, it can access information from your calendar and emails. For drivers who like to get things done in their cars, senior Android UX director Guemmy Kim shared ways Gemini works with its car dashboard apps. Users can ask for summaries of texts they received, translate messages into other languages, and even ask for help cheating on their book club by asking for a synopsis of Pride and Prejudice and discussion points. Indeed, the ability to cut corners in work and everyday life seemed to be one of Gemini's key selling points in the presentation. In an earlier part of the livestream, Senior Android Product Manager Rohan Shah demoed using Gemini to take a look at a long pre-event email. "I could have and should have gone through it myself, but I have Gemini here to help," said Shah. Gemini will come to the Android Auto app first, and then to Google Built-In for cars manufactured with Google's operating system. One area of our lives that doesn't ask anything from us is the TV, where Google is also adding Gemini. In the same way that streaming platforms like Netflix are adding new AI features, Gemini is coming to Google TV. The event touted potential use cases like using natural language to ask for custom movie recommendations or pulling up information and educational YouTube videos. This feature is also rolling out in the coming months, presumably as Android 16 goes live. Google also shared that Gemini will come to Android XR next year. Of course, this was just the pre-Google I/O event focused on Android. Next week, we expect many, many more Gemini AI announcements from Google-land, so stay tuned.

Google is putting Gemini on your wrist and more screens around you
Table of Contents Table of Contents Gemini on smartwatches AI on every screen in your life Google has just announced that the Gemini AI stack is coming to your Wear OS smartwatch, and a bunch of other screens in your life, such as your car's infotainment dashboard and smart TV. With the move, the company is bringing down the curtain on Google Assistant across its device ecosystem. Gemini is already a part of the core Android experience, deeply integrated across the Workspace ecosystem of apps and even third-party platforms such as WhatsApp and Spotify. With Gemini making its way to Wear OS, Android Auto, and TV, users will have a more seamless experience and a wider variety of screens to get work done. Recommended Videos Gemini on smartwatches Google says Gemini on Wear OS smartwatches will essentially fill the gap for scenarios when you don't have a phone handy. The generative AI assistant will make its way to smartwatches in the coming months, though Google hasn't clarified the hardware or software baseline for the transition. Gemini on smartwatches will let users perform a wide range of tasks, such as setting reminders, accessing data from Google platforms such as Gmail, pulling details from Maps, and more. It will understand context and offer memory capabilities, as well, just the way it handles conversations on mobiles and desktops. Moreover, Gemini on Wear OS will be able to extract information from different apps in a single query. The biggest benefit is the enhanced natural language understanding and conversational capabilities of Gemini, especially compared to Google Assistant. AI on every screen in your life In addition to smartwatches, the Gemini experience is also making its way to Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Once again, the biggest highlights are enhanced conversational capabilities and contextual understanding offered by the next-gen AI assistant. "Instead of focusing on the perfect prompt or tapping the right button, you can stay focused on the road ahead," says the company, adding that hands-free interactions will receive a huge boost. For example, it can help with route planning, give you a summary of daily news, summarize articles or books, and more. The biggest upgrade will be handling communications. Gemini can connect to the messaging apps installed on your phone, allowing the AI to summarize and translate them without asking users to press or tap on an on-screen button. Gemini will also handle the response via voice dictation or generate a reply, as well. Gemini will first arrive on Android Auto in the coming weeks, followed by vehicles rocking the Cars with Google Built-in label. In the months that follow, the AI assistant will also make its way to TVs, too. "With Gemini on Google TV, you can ask for action movies that are age-appropriate for your kids, and get the best recommendations," says Google. On TVs, Gemini will tap more into its knowledge bank and let users ask questions not just about the entertainment content on their TV screen, but other general topics, as well. Finally, we have the budding Android XR platform, which is soon going to find a home on Samsung's high-end headset and smart glasses later this year. On XR devices that offer an immersive spatial computing layout, Gemini will spread its response across multiple floating screens. For example, if you ask it to plan a heritage walk, it will show relevant material on screens with a map overview, information pulled from the internet, and videos from YouTube. Gemini will also expand to wireless earbuds sold by third-party labels such as Samsung and Sony.

Google Is Putting Gemini AI Into Smartwatches, Cars, and TVs
Can your device run Android? There's a good chance it'll soon be able to run Gemini, too. Google's Gemini AI is going beyond Android phones, the company officially announced today, prior to its Google I/O 2025 conference later this month. Specifically, Google says it will bring the AI assistant to smartwatches, cars, TVs, and even mixed reality headsets. This is a significant step forward for its Gemini push, as it'll allow people to use the service on almost all devices in the Google ecosystem. The goal of Gemini on your smartwatch is to ensure you've always got your AI assistant with you, so you can ask questions while you're cooking, biking, or doing the chores as your phone charges. Google says you can use Gemini to set reminders, and it'll be able to use contextual information such as your location to give you correct answers. The company adds that you can ask Gemini to remind you about a restaurant reservation mentioned in your email inbox, or to remember which locker you're using at a gym, right from your Wear OS smartwatch. Gemini for smartwatches is planned to arrive "in the coming months." Google Assistant for Android Auto has been among the most useful features for drivers who want to stay hands-free, and now the company is upgrading it to Gemini. This will be available to every car that supports Android Auto or has Google built-in. The company says this will help people by letting them use natural language to control their cars, reducing distractions. You won't have to think of the right voice prompt to get the results you need, Google claims. As far as real-world use cases go, Google suggests that you could ask Gemini for a daily news rundown while excluding certain topics, or you could have Gemini summarize your text messages, then reply to them for you -- even translating them to another language if you like. As for helping you with your trips, Google suggests you could ask the AI to help you find points of interest along your route, such as a charging station near a park. Gemini is coming to Android Auto "in the coming months," and it'll be available for cars with Google Built-in after that. I'm curious how helpful this will really end up being, because in some use cases, Gemini has been a bit slower for me than non-AI control. Gemini is also coming to Google TV, where the company says it will help you find the right kind of content. For instance, you could ask it to find "action movies that are age-appropriate for kids," and it'll serve you up a list of AI-assisted recommendations. Alternatively, the bot could supposedly answer questions by sharing a few words, then linking to relevant YouTube videos. Sounds great, as long as the AI doesn't hallucinate or accidentally send your kid down a misinformation rabbit hole. Gemini is also planned for a few other devices, including eventual Android XR mixed reality headsets. The company said Samsung will launch the first Android XR headset later this year, and that it will ship with Gemini included. Some earbuds from Sony and Samsung will also get Gemini support, but the launch timeline is unclear for those devices.

Gemini is Coming to Cars, Watches, TVs, and More | AIM
Google's AI assistant will be arriving on more Android-powered devices for easier access. Gemini, Google's AI assistant, is expanding beyond Android phones. In an announcement ahead of Google I/O, the company revealed that Gemini will soon power experiences across cars, smartwatches, TVs, and even extended reality headsets. The company aims to position Gemini at the centre, offering users helpful, hands-free interactions wherever they are. Gemini is already available on billions of Android phones, and features like Gemini Live now work without a subscription. However, Google's next move is to bring AI assistants to the entire Android ecosystem, including cars, smartwatches, and more. Android Auto and cars with Google built-in will soon support Gemini, enabling more natural voice commands for navigating, communicating, and even brainstorming. Users can message friends in other languages, find taco spots along their route, or ask Gemini to summarise texts. Users can use Gemini Live and say "Hey Google, let's talk" to spark conversations on the go, like preparing for a meeting or getting a news rundown during a commute. The AI assistant will launch in Android Auto-compatible vehicles in the coming months and arrive in built-in infotainment systems in models like the Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5 and Honda Passport later this year. Smartwatches powered by Wear OS are next. Gemini will let users set reminders, translate messages, or check emails without their phone. Google emphasises natural conversation. To set a reminder, one can say instructions like "Remember I'm using locker 43 today." On the TV, Gemini aims to act as a helpful guide, finding age-appropriate movies, pulling up YouTube explainer videos and more. Meanwhile, Google's partnership with Samsung is bringing Gemini to Samsung's upcoming headset powered by Android XR, which will help users interact in immersive environments. Gemini is also coming to earbuds, glasses, and other Android devices, promising what Google calls "personalised, powerful, and proactive help." Google also announced Material 3 Expressive, an update to its existing Material You UI framework with new colour theming, responsive animations, and glanceable features across phones and smartwatches. It will roll out first to Pixel devices later this year with Android 16 and Wear OS 6.

Android Auto is now powered by Google Gemini
Google is bringing Gemini, its generative AI, to cars that support Android Auto in the next few months, the company announced ahead of its 2025 I/O developer conference. The integration aims to make driving "more productive -- and fun," according to a blog post. Patrick Brady, VP of Android for Cars, described this move as "one of the largest transformations in the in-vehicle experience that we've seen in a very, very long time." Gemini will enhance the Android Auto experience in two primary ways. Firstly, it will act as a more powerful smart voice assistant, enabling users to send texts, play music, and perform other tasks without needing to use precise commands. Video: Google Gemini's natural language capabilities will allow it to understand and respond to more complex requests. For instance, it can "remember" a contact's language preference for text messages and handle translations accordingly. Google claims Gemini will also be able to find restaurants along a planned route, including responding to specific queries like "taco places with vegan options" by leveraging Google listings and reviews. The second main feature is "Gemini Live," which enables the AI to engage in full conversations on various topics, from travel ideas to Roman history. Brady argued that Gemini's natural language capabilities will reduce cognitive load by making it easier to ask Android Auto to perform tasks. Video: Google Gemini will initially rely on Google's cloud processing for both Android Auto and cars with Google Built-In. However, Google is working with automakers to enhance edge computing capabilities, which should improve performance and reliability. Brady mentioned that modern cars generate significant data from onboard sensors and cameras, and while Google has "nothing to announce" regarding Gemini's potential use of this multi-modal data, he acknowledged the potential for "really, really interesting use cases in the future." Gemini on Android Auto and Google Built-In will be available in countries where Google's generative AI model is already accessible and will support over 40 languages.

Samsung Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Buds 3 Series to Get Gemini Integration Soon
Gemini allows hands-free AI access without needing the phone nearby Samsung on Wednesday announced the integration of Gemini, Google's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, into its lineup of wearables. Samsung Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds 3 series users will soon be able to leverage the AI assistant for setting up reminders, summarising texts, getting weather updates, and other activities that the AI bot previously allowed on phones. With this move, the company expands the presence of AI features across all devices in the Galaxy ecosystem. In a press note, Samsung said that the introduction of Gemini on the Galaxy Watch marks the first-ever integration into the Galaxy wearable lineup. It will also be integrated into Samsung's flagship true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds -- the Galaxy Buds 3 series, with activation process cited as "even smoother". On the Galaxy Watch, Gemini delivers hands-free assistance using natural voice commands. For example, users can ask Gemini to "Remember I'm using locker 43 today", and the AI assistant will set a reminder for it. They can also ask it to summarise emails for quick overview. The company says Gemini handles requests across apps to deliver responses and take actions. Meanwhile, Galaxy Buds 3 series users can have an even more seamless experience with Gemini, says Samsung. They can use voice commands or pinch and hold to invoke the AI assistant on the TWS earbuds to get weather updates, and more, without having to interact with the phone. Notably, Google is also bringing Gemini to more devices. This announcement was part of The Android Show: I/O Edition, the company's buildup to the Google I/O 2025 which kicks off next week. As per the tech giant, it will come to smartwatches via Wear OS, on smart TVs via Android TV, and in-car infotainment systems via Android Auto. Additionally, headsets and smart glasses powered by Android XR operating system will also benefit from the AI assistant's capabilities. While availability remains under question, Google hinted that features powered by Gemini will be available to all users.

Gemini Will Soon Be Available on Smartwatches, TVs and Cars
Android Auto's Gemini will support hands-free experience by default Google announced the expansion of Gemini to more Android devices on Tuesday. The announcement was part of The Android Show: I/O Edition, the company's buildup to the Google I/O 2025 next week. The Mountain View-based tech giant stated that its in-house artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot will be equipped in smartwatches (via Wear OS), smart TVs (via Android TV), in-car infotainment systems (via Android Auto), and even headsets and smart glasses (via Android XR). The company hinted that these features will be available to all users. In a press release, the tech giant detailed the new devices that will get Gemini capabilities in the coming days and how AI can enhance their usability. Google said that in the coming months, Gemini will be integrated into Wear OS-powered smartwatches. It will act as an AI assistant, and users can activate and interact with it hands-free. Google said that users can leverage Gemini in smartwatches to ask general queries, set reminders and alarms, seek information from email (after Gemini is connected to the user's apps), and more. Android Auto and cars with Google built-in will soon support Gemini, and users will be able to have hands-free natural language conversations with the AI. Unlike Google Assistant, users will not have to tap the right button or worry about saying the perfect prompt. Gemini in cars can find the best route while ensuring the requirements of the users are met. For instance, a user can ask Gemini to find a charging station near a park on the way to the post office, and the AI will find the specific route so the user can take a walk while the car is charging. Additionally, Gemini can also summarise messages, translate replies in another language, find top news of the day, and more. Google will also be bringing Gemini AI capabilities to smart TVs running Google TV later this year. The company says the integration will allow users to request content suggestions more intuitively. Users will be able to ask for movie and show recommendations and receive tailored responses. The tech giant is also partnering with Samsung to integrate Gemini into its upcoming mixed-reality headsets. Google's Gemini Coming to WearOS, Android Auto, TV, and Android XR
It will make daily tasks more convenient and users will be able to interact with it using natural language commands. Up until now, Google's Gemini has taken over our Android phones, replacing their former voice assistant with the shiny new AI-powered alternative. Now, during the Android Show: I/O Edition, Google has unveiled its plans to spread the reach of Gemini to more devices, including WearOS, Android Auto, Google TV, and even Android XR. We recently talked about Google dropping hints of Gemini coming to Wear OS, and now we have official confirmation. As explained in this blog post, the company discussed how Gemini integration will help you interact with the AI chatbot right through your watch and even set reminders, or ask about messages. All this, without needing to pull out your phone. They also iterated how Gemini integration in Android Auto will upgrade your hands-free voice command experience. You will be able to give instructions in natural language, and Gemini will provide the most suitable replies. They shared an example where "Gemini can find you a charging station on the way to the post office that's also near a park, so that you can go for a walk before your errands while your car is charging". Or, you can ask it to "give me the rundown of the news today (but without sports), or get a quick synopsis of the book I just finished reading (or didn't have time to finish) on my way to my book club meetup". And Gemini will do it without you having to take your hands off the steering wheel. It is also coming to Google TV, where you can ask personalized recommendations for TV shows and movies. Like, you can ask, "Action movies that are age-appropriate for your kids". Gemini can also help as a learning guide. It'll be able to answer curious questions in a friendly but engaging manner. Finally, Gemini will sit at the core of their upcoming Android XR headset, which they are building along with Samsung. "Gemini can help you do things like plan a vacation by surrounding you with videos, maps, and local tips, creating an entire itinerary in minutes while providing a more realistic feel for the place you're researching," explained Google in their blog post. With Google stretching Gemini's reach, the ecosystem could start to feel more connected than it has in prior years. And it is about time, as more and more people have gotten used to using AI on their devices. Are you excited about the arrival of Gemini on your device nearby? Let us know in the comments below.

Google expands Gemini beyond smartphones to watches, cars, TVs and XR devices
Google has announced plans to integrate its Gemini AI assistant across the entire Android ecosystem, extending its reach far beyond smartphones into smartwatches, car dashboards, TVs, and even extended reality (XR) devices. "Gemini is at the center of the Android experience," said Rohan Shah, Senior Product Manager for Android. "It's already available in over 40 languages and accessible globally without an advanced subscription. But we're just getting started." Also Read: Android 16 and Wear OS 6 unveiled with improved design, security and new Find Hub In the coming months, Google will bring Gemini to Wear OS smartwatches, enabling users to access AI assistance directly from their wrists. This integration targets moments when using a phone is impractical, such as during workouts or when hands are otherwise occupied. "With Gemini, you can just talk naturally, so you don't need to get the words just right or look into your tiny screen and awkwardly try to type there," explained Guemmy Kim, Senior Director of Product and UX, Android. "It's built to handle real-life multitasking, like when your hands are tied up or you're on the move." The assistant will connect to apps, handle tasks, answer questions, and recall important information through natural conversation. In vehicles, Google is overhauling the Android Auto and Google Built-in experience with Gemini. Patrick Brady, VP of Android for Cars, highlighted the scale of this rollout: "Today, there are over 250 million cars that support Android Auto, and more than 50 car models with Google built-in on the road." The AI assistant will significantly enhance hands-free capabilities, understanding natural language queries and connecting to multiple apps simultaneously. "You can now ask Gemini to find a gluten-free, kid-friendly restaurant with good reviews, and it'll check the menus, read reviews, and make suggestions, all while you're driving", Kim illustrated. "It keeps your hands on the wheel and your attention on the road." Beyond navigation, Gemini will integrate with messaging apps to summarise incoming texts and even translate messages into different languages before sending. The system also supports Gemini Live for more extensive conversations while driving. "Say you always message Joe in Spanish, Gemini will remember that. It'll even translate your reply before sending it," added Brady. "On my morning commute, I can ask Gemini to give me the rundown of the news today (but without sports), or get a quick synopsis of the book I just finished reading on my way to my book club meetup," Kim noted. Gemini will arrive on Android Auto in the coming months, with integration into cars with Google built-in following later this year, including vehicles like the new Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5, and Honda Passport. Later this year, Google TV will receive Gemini capabilities, with a focus on personalised recommendations and educational content. Users will be able to ask for specific content types, such as "action movies that are age-appropriate for kids," or questions about the solar system, and receive tailored suggestions alongside relevant YouTube videos. Google is also bringing Gemini to Android XR, its newest platform developed in collaboration with Samsung for headsets, glasses, and other extended reality devices. "When the first headset from Samsung launches later this year, Gemini can help you do things like plan a vacation by surrounding you with videos, maps and local tips, creating an entire itinerary in minutes while providing a more realistic feel for the place you're researching," Kim said. This step places Google in direct competition with Meta's Quest and Apple's Vision Pro, though Google's angle is less about recreation and more about utility, blending real-world tasks with contextual AI. "We're expanding Gemini way beyond phones and bringing this truly smart and helpful assistant to all your devices," said Guemmy Kim, Senior Director of Product and User Experience at Android. "Whatever you're doing, whether you're running, in a car, or just on the couch at home, your assistant will be ready to help." The full suite of Gemini capabilities will be showcased at Google I/O next week, where attendees can experience demonstrations of these integrations firsthand.
