Google Drive Introduces In-Browser Video Editing with Google Vids Integration

Google announced Friday that it's enhancing the editing experience for Drive videos with a new shortcut button for Vids, the tech giant's AI-powered video creation tool. The new feature allows Workspace users to initiate a video edit using Vids directly from the Google Drive interface. Now, while previewing a video in Drive, users will see an "Open" button in the top right corner that opens the video in the Vids app. Vids will automatically launch the video file, allowing further edits such as trimming the clip or incorporating music and text. This new shortcut, which is activated by default, suggests that the company is integrating the app more closely with Google's Workspace suite. Launched last year, Vids aims to streamline video production, including the ability to generate videos from basic text prompts, automatically craft scripts, rearrange video clips, add transitions, and more. This comes on the heels of the company introducing another Gemini AI feature for Workspace users in May, which allows them to use AI to summarize video files stored in Google Drive.

Google is now offering a way to edit videos right in Drive via Google Vids in a compatible browser. Whenever you're previewing a video in Google Drive, you may see an "Open" button in the top right of the screen. Clicking this opens the clip in Google Vids, where you can trim the video, add text and music and make other changes. Veo is available in the app too. After you open a file in Vids, a new file is created, and you'll have to save or export that if need be. Google for Education has a free course detailing how to use Vids. In general, it seems like a useful way to edit videos that you've already uploaded to Drive, but there are some caveats here. For one thing, it's restricted to paid users, including those on various Workspace business and enterprise plans, nonprofits and those with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons. Google AI Pro and Ultra users will get access as well. So too will anyone who bought the Gemini Business and Enterprise add-ons before Google discontinued them earlier this year. Vids will be enabled for supported organizations by default unless they've opted to block access to Google Docs. This Google Vids feature works on the latest couple of versions of Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge (Windows only). Compatibility on other browsers may vary. MP4, Quicktime, OGG and WebM videos are supported, with individual clips having limits of 35 minutes of runtime and a file size of 4GB.

Once you're done editing, a new Vids file is created, so remember to save or export your work separately. Desktop only, at least for now The integration should work optimally on desktops with Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge (on Windows devices only). It should work on other browsers too, albeit with limited functionality. Vids integration began rolling out today, and can potentially take a little over 15 days to be widely visible across these eligible Workspace domains: Business Starter, Standard, and Plus Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus Essentials Enterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus Nonprofits Customers with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-on Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers

Google Drive Has a New Feature for Videos

Google just made it way easier to edit videos stored in Google Drive. The company added a new "Open" button in the upper right of the video preview screen that opens the file in Google Vids. This is a huge improvement because editing required a whole process of downloading and reuploading. Once you click the Open button, the video file will automatically open in Google Vids, where you can make all sorts of edits. This includes trimming clips, adding text, music, and a lot more. This makes it really easy to do simple edits without needing a more complex editing program. I pay for the 2TB storage with Google, and editing videos is a huge pain because it requires downloading the files and then reuploading them after editing. One huge detail to know is that when Vids opens the video file, it creates a new Vids file. This means you'll still have to go through the regular steps to save or export it to a different file format. The new tool also has some limitations, as individual clips can only be up to 35 minutes long and have a maximum file size of 4 GB. The new feature is currently rolling out, and for some, it might take a while to show up. According to Google, it could take longer than 15 days for the feature to be fully visible to all users on both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. This shortcut will be on by default for Google Workspace users, but for admins, you can turn it off at the organizational level if needed. However, you should know that if Google Docs are turned off for your domain, Vids access will also be unavailable. This new video editing shortcut is the latest in a series of improvements Google has been making to Drive's video capabilities. Just last October, Google rolled out a new video player, and in May, the company added a Gemini AI feature that can summarize videos stored in Drive. As of now, this feature is available for a number of Google Workspace plans, including Business Starter, Standard, and Plus, as well as all of the Enterprise, Essentials, and Nonprofits plans. It's also available to those with the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons. On top of that, it's also available for those with Google AI Pro and Ultra. Unfortunately, it looks like personal Google accounts can't use the new feature at all. I subscribe to Google One, but it hasn't rolled out to me just yet. So if you don't see it, don't worry, rollouts tend to take a while. Google has a timeframe of 15 days for this rollout, so the longest wait could be until September 6, 2025.
