How Scheduled Actions Work

The Scheduled Actions feature enables users to create prompts that will run at specific times, dates, or in response to particular events. To set up a scheduled action, users provide a detailed prompt including the desired timing and frequency. Gemini then confirms and automatically enables the action 2.

Managing Scheduled Tasks

Users can access and manage their scheduled tasks through a new dedicated section within the Gemini interface. On mobile devices, this is accessible via the profile menu, while on the web, it can be found in the side panel under "Settings & help" 1.

The management interface allows users to:

  • Pause, resume, or delete scheduled actions
  • Rename actions (web version)
  • Modify the underlying prompt (web version)
  • Set up daily, weekly, or monthly recurrences (web version)

Google has stated that prompts will execute within an hour of the scheduled time 2.

Limitations and Availability

Currently, Gemini users are limited to a maximum of ten active scheduled actions. This feature is not available to free users of Gemini. Access is restricted to those with a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, or qualifying Google Workspace business and education plans 1.

Potential Use Cases

The possibilities for Scheduled Actions are diverse, allowing users to integrate AI assistance into their daily routines. Some potential applications include:

  1. Generating daily market information reports
  2. Creating new workout routines before gym sessions
  3. Providing regular updates on specific topics of interest

Comparison to Competitors

This feature is similar to ChatGPT's scheduled tasks, indicating a trend of AI chatbots adopting and refining features from one another. The implementation of Scheduled Actions brings Gemini closer to feature parity with other leading AI assistants in the market 1.

Impact on AI Automation

The introduction of Scheduled Actions represents a significant step towards more agentic AI functionality. By allowing users to automate future tasks, Google is enhancing the practical applications of AI in daily life and work scenarios. This feature has the potential to streamline workflows and increase productivity for individuals and businesses alike.
