Google Meet Expands AI-Generated Backgrounds to Android

Google Meet, the popular video conferencing platform, is set to introduce AI-generated backgrounds for its Android users, a feature that has been available on the web version since last year. This development, powered by Google's Gemini AI, marks a significant enhancement in the app's functionality and user experience 1.

How the Feature Works

The new "Generate a background" option will be accessible within Meet's Effects menu. Users can enter a text prompt to describe their desired background, and Gemini will generate a custom image based on that description. For instance, using the prompt "a street with colorful walls" will result in a unique, AI-generated backdrop 1.

Customization and Flexibility

Users will have the ability to preview backgrounds in real-time before entering a meeting or even enable them during an ongoing call. If the initial result doesn't meet expectations, the same prompt can be regenerated for slightly different outcomes. The feature offers various styles, including Photography, Sci-fi, Illustration, 3D animation, Fantasy, and Monochrome 1.

Holiday-Themed Addition

In addition to the AI-generated backgrounds, Google Meet is introducing a new "Christmas" style, currently exclusive to the Android version. This holiday-themed option allows users to add a festive touch to their video calls, although it may soon be available on the web version as well 1.

Availability and Access

The AI background generation feature was initially part of Google's Workspace Labs program. It has since been expanded to users with a Gemini for Google Workspace add-on or a Google One AI Premium subscription. While the feature is fully functional in the latest Android app version (277.0.693808058.duo.android_20241105.16_p1), it is not yet widely available to all eligible users 2.

Implications for Video Conferencing

This update represents a significant step in personalizing virtual meeting spaces. By allowing users to create custom backgrounds on-the-fly, Google Meet is enhancing its competitiveness in the video conferencing market. The integration of Gemini AI showcases Google's commitment to incorporating advanced AI technologies into its consumer products, potentially setting a new standard for video call experiences 1 2.
