Google is developing AI-generated backgrounds for Google Meet on Android, expanding a feature previously available only on the web version. This move signifies Google's continued integration of AI into its Workspace apps.

Google Meet's AI-Generated Backgrounds Expanding to Android

Google is set to bring its popular AI-generated backgrounds feature to the Android version of Google Meet, marking a significant expansion of its Gemini-powered capabilities. This development, currently in its early stages, was discovered during an APK teardown of the latest Gmail app (version 2024.10.06.682972205) 12.

Current Availability and Requirements

The AI-generated backgrounds feature, which debuted in 2023 as part of Google's Workspace Labs program, is currently limited to the web version of Google Meet. To access this feature, users need either a Gemini for Google Workspace add-on or a Google One AI Premium subscription 1.

How the Feature Works

On the web version, users can generate custom backgrounds by entering prompts and selecting styles such as Photography, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy. The system then produces several samples based on the input. Users have the option to create more samples or edit their prompts for different results 12.

Android Implementation

The upcoming Android implementation is expected to mirror the web version's functionality. A new "Generate a background" button will appear in the Effects menu of the Google Meet interface on Android devices. While the feature is still under development and currently displays a blank page when accessed, it's anticipated to include similar capabilities to its web counterpart 12.

Broader AI Integration in Google Workspace

This move is part of Google's broader strategy to incorporate AI elements across its product lineup, particularly within Workspace apps. In addition to AI-generated backgrounds, Google Meet has recently introduced other AI-powered features such as the "Take notes for me" function, which is also slated for an Android release 2.

Implications and Availability

The expansion of AI-generated backgrounds to Android signifies Google's commitment to enhancing user experience across platforms. While the release date for this feature on Android remains unconfirmed, it's expected to be available to users with the requisite subscriptions, just like the web version 12.

This development not only showcases Google's ongoing efforts to integrate AI into its services but also highlights the company's focus on bringing parity between web and mobile experiences for its Workspace applications.
