You also shouldn’t trust the AI's answers without question. This week, an AI chatbot on Facebook was willing to offer a recipe for cooking an incredibly poisonous mushroom. I asked Gemini Live the same question, and while it routinely told me it recommends “consulting with a mushroom expert to make sure it’s safe,†it didn’t have any compunction giving me a barebones technique for mushroom stroganoff with "blushing earthstar" mushrooms (hint: do not do this). Simply put, the AI isn’t intelligent and shouldn’t be treated as such. Gemini itself is better for searching through your emails instead of looking through multiple pages for that one dinner reservation. If you regularly use Docs, Drive, or Sheets, Gemini can prove pretty handy if all you need is finding lost documents or filling out spreadsheets. This app may show us where Apple hopes to go with Siri. Apple has said its Apple Intelligence suite will work between apps, so you can pull information from your Mail and make it into an event in Calendar all with a single text or voice prompt. So far, Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.1 offers some barebones and often hilarious notification and email summaries. This would be a huge coup for iPhone users who haven't been able to use Gemini outside of the Google app, giving an alternate option to Siri. We're yet to hear of any reports of other users accessing the Gemini app, so either Google is currently testing this new addition to its app family or U/lostshenanigans is fooling us all (I'm leaning towards the former). As soon as we have more updates on a standalone Gemini app for iPhone we'll be sure to give it a download. After all, Gemini Live is one of the best examples of AI we've tried so far - it's just a shame it's exclusive to Android (for now). I've been waiting for Gemini Live to come to iPhone for a while, so this news of a potential standalone Gemini app with Live functionality is incredibly exciting. Of course, Gemini can hook into your Google account and use all the data from Google apps and services, like your Google calendars, contacts, e-mails, and so on. There doesn't appear to be anything in the Gemini app that you couldn't just do in the Google app by tapping the toggle at the top of the screen to switch between Search and Gemini. Perhaps Google is setting itself up for future customization of its dedicated Gemini app, or integration with iOS in some future Apple Intelligence release. Or maybe taking the same exact feature and dropping it into its own app is just a way to draw some attention to it.

Other options include Gemini Live, which turns Gemini into a far more conversational partner. This is a big one, as it's not available in the Google app, so it's probably going to be the primary reason to choose the standalone Gemini app over the Google app. The app is a free download in Apple's App Store, but it does offer in-app purchases. That's if you want to upgrade to Gemini Advanced, which is a part of Google's One AI premium plan. For a $18.99 monthly fee, you'll get a more advanced Gemini model, access to Gemini in apps such as Gmail and Docs, and faster access to new and experimental features. Since launch, Gemini on iOS has been part of the Google (Search) app. That's about to change with at least one iPhone user today spotting a standalone "Google Gemini" app on the App Store that also lets you access Gemini Live. With this standalone app, you get a Gemini icon on your homescreen: "Unlock the power of Google AI on your iPhone." Since launch, you've had to open the Google app and switch over to the "Gemini" tab at the top. Alternatively, the Google app's homescreen widget was updated in September with customizable shortcuts that let you directly access Gemini with one tap. The listing for "Google Gemini" shows the ability to access Gemini Live. This is not yet available in the Google app, with one user that downloaded the app showing the voice experience in action.
