Finally, HP is adding AI to its printers
If you buy something from a Verge link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics statement. HP has a groundbreaking announcement. No, it's not making it easier to use cheaper, third-party ink, nor does it have a solution for frequent paper jams and irritating software issues. It's bringing AI to printers. The new HP Print AI experience is rolling out today in an "exclusive" beta and comes with a Perfect Output feature that's supposed to clean up printouts of webpages. HP says it will automatically detect unwanted content like ads or weird formatting, allowing it to print just the "desired text and images." It's also supposed to optimize printouts of spreadsheets by keeping charts and tables on a single page, instead of splitting them up. But that's not all -- HP says you can use "conversational prompts" with Print AI to turn photos into greeting cards by adding custom styles and fonts. According to HP, it can automatically upscale images and remove unwanted objects as well. HP says it plans to launch new Print AI features throughout 2025. There's still no word on which printers it's available for, or if you'll need to install software separate from the HP Smart printing software to get it. Either way, if there's some kind of chat interface in this thing, at least I'll be able to route my anger toward something that might be able to give me an answer -- instead of just yelling at my DeskJet when it decides not to print something for the fourth time that day.

HP is giving your printer an AI upgrade that might actually solve some of your biggest printing problems
HP Print AI looks to solve all your biggest printing problems HP has unveiled plans to end some of the most common printing woes with the launch of a new service powered by AI. Designed to "change how the world prints", HP Print AI will look to make printing less of a chore, tackling annoying or tricky challenges for home users and office workers alike. The launch should also mean your printer produces most consistent, high-quality output, with a new collaboration tool also helping to boost productivity among teams based in different locations. The first AI-powered feature to be introduced in the slightly hubris-y "Perfect Output", which HP says will make printing from sources such as web browsers and spreadsheets smoother. Printing items such as news articles, recipes and how-to guides from a browser often yields unnecessary white space and issues with image sizes or ads being included - and Perfect Output looks to solve this by detecting "unwanted content" such as ads and web text, printing only what you need, solving not just time, but ink and paper. The tool also looks to make printing from spreadsheets less painful, offering a printable selection that doesn't split tables or charts across pages. Elsewhere, the platform will look to provide greater collaboration for businesses scanning lots of documents to get customer information. The new HP Scan AI Enhanced tool is able to identify the type of document being scanned, and extract the desired information based on your specific business needs, saving especially smaller businesses time and money being spent on manual data upload tasks. "We are transforming the printing experience with HP Print AI, making it easier and more intuitive," said Tuan Tran, HP President of Imaging, Printing, and Solutions. "Introducing AI solutions across our portfolio will simplify printing, ignite creativity, and accelerate collaboration - all while ensuring customer data is protected and kept private. This is our first step in setting a new standard for printing." HP Print AI is available today, with the company saying it intends to continue launching extra capabilities throughout 2025.

HP's Print AI will offer a better way to print websites
HP just announced HP Print AI, which is being advertised as "the industry's first intelligent print" experience. Beyond squeezing in tech's two favorite letters (AI), the software looks to "simplify and enhance printing from setup to support." There are several tools here, but the most interesting aspect is something called Perfect Output. This could actually solve the problem of printing from web pages, which typically produces something just a hair above absolute garbage. The company says the embedded algorithms will reduce all of that unnecessary white space and will get rid of ads. Image size will also be optimized, so printing from a website should look about as good as something that came from a word processor. HP says everything will "fit perfectly on the page for the first time." Perfect Output isn't just for websites, as the company says it'll also make short work of spreadsheets, which are another frustrating thing to print out. This feature begins rolling out today, but only to select customers as a beta. HP told Engadget that Perfect Output will work with any of the company's printers, so long as the correct driver is installed and it's connected to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine. Once some customer feedback comes in, it should go into a wider release. HP Print AI will also use artificial intelligence to customize support for each user, with the company saying that its "intelligent technology anticipates" the needs of consumers. HP says this will be especially useful when it comes to setup and for remembering user preferences. There's also a chatbot in there that allows for language-based queries, which runs off of a proprietary LLM the company calls a "print language model." So it's technically a, sigh, PLM. For now, these tools are tied to driver software. HP says that they'll be featured prominently in a forthcoming app update scheduled for next year.

HP's Answer for Your Printing Needs: An AI Chatbot
HP Print AI, introduced today, is a digital assistant that promises to manage all your print needs, including offering customer support. "Gone are the days of manipulating radio buttons and print dialog boxes to get your desired output," HP SVP of print software platforms Mary Fish said during a press briefing. Instead, HP Print AI has been designed to understand "conversational" inputs. "It's truly as easy as 'Print four copies, double-sided,'" Fish said in an example. The AI program has also been designed to streamline the process of setting up a printer. Rather than reading a manual, the user can tap HP Print AI to learn all the necessary steps, including what software to download and run. In addition, the program is designed to monitor the printer itself for things like paper jams and running out of ink. HP says Print AI is smart enough to personalize its language and remember your preferences, making it a better customer support agent than a typical chatbot. The other standout feature is called "Perfect Output," which can suggest the optimal layout to print a document, bypassing the the trial-and-error of printing a document to the user's exact desires. "Say goodbye to unusable prints and wasted paper," Fish added. According to HP, Perfect Output excels at minimizing white space while properly resizing the images and graphics to fit an 8-by-11 sheet of paper, making it especially handy for printing out articles, travel documents, and how-to-guides that are formatted for the web. Perfect Output will also display the optimized layout in a preview mode before it goes to print. During the briefing, HP also teased future capabilities, including the ability to create custom greeting cards that can use your personalized photos and attach a gift card. The company is first making HP Print AI's Perfect Out function available as a beta for select customers. It then plans on rolling out HP Print AI more widely throughout next year. But HP didn't say whether the feature will cost extra. Although chatbots are known for training themselves on users' data, HP says its Print AI system will keep all users' conversations and data private.

"The introduction of AI solutions across our entire product portfolio will simplify printing, enable creativity, and accelerate collaboration, while ensuring that customer data is protected and remains private. This is our first step in setting a new standard for printing." HP tells us an interesting fact on their blog: more than half of the prints that take place today are of documents that come from internet browsers. Travel documents, cooking recipes, etc. However, this introduces some problems, like too much white space or the printing of unwanted ads. One of the functions of HP Print AI, Perfect Output, helps us reorganize pages and remove unwanted content. This will save time, paper, and ink, as they explain in their post.

HP: Pressing CTRL+P Will One Day Trigger Our AI Print Bot
HP is embracing AI to the point that it plans on triggering a chatbot to pop up when users press CTRL + P to print documents. At the company's HP Imagine event in Palo Alto today, the PC maker shared more details about HP Print AI, which it plans on rolling out widely to users over the next year. Initially, HP Print will be available as a plug-in for the Chrome browser and Microsoft Office programs. But the company is looking to eventually bake the chatbot directly into the software drivers necessary to run HP printers, eliminating the need to install the plug-in. Then, owners of HP printers will see the chatbot every time they activate the print screen, which can be triggered by pressing CTRL + P on the keyboard. The change is poised to overhaul the traditional print interface. HP's Print AI promises to offer far more functionality by using both a chat box to communicate, and offering suggestions that can automatically optimize a file for an 8-by-11 sheet of paper. In a demo, HP employees showed that the AI chatbot excels at printing articles taken from the web. Normally, traditional printers include ads and navigation buttons if you print content from a website. But HP's Print AI is smart enough to remove all the clutter, including extra white space, and automatically format a web article or even an Excel sheet to paper. However, a lot remains undecided about HP Print AI, including its potential costs and what printers will support it. The other issue is that integrating the chatbot may raise concerns about bloatware or lag, considering it can take a few moments for the chatbot to optimize certain documents for printing. Still, HP will retain the old school, straightforward print approach too. To create Print AI, HP developed its own private large language models, which have been trained to optimize files for print, including removing the ads from web articles. In addition, HP says no user data from the print files will be used to train the AI models. Still, Print AI isn't flawless. As the company's demos showed, the chatbot can fail to remove all the white space when printing a web page article, or it can arrange the contents a bit awkwardly. To help improve the AI program, HP told PCMag it plans on kicking off a beta campaign of Print AI this fall, recruiting US users to offer input before Print AI's wider rollout.

HP launches AI-powered printing solutions By Investing.com
PALO ALTO, Calif. - HP Inc. (NYSE: NYSE:HPQ) introduced HP Print AI, touted as the industry's first intelligent print experience, at HP Imagine today. The new technology aims to simplify printing tasks from setup to support, including a feature called Perfect Output, currently available in a beta program. Perfect Output addresses common printing issues, especially from web browsers, where users often encounter unwanted white space, incorrect image sizes, and intrusive ads. The feature is designed to reformat content for better page fit and to exclude non-essential elements, potentially saving time, ink, and paper. The company also highlighted HP Scan AI Enhanced, a cloud-based solution that automates document scanning processes for small and medium-sized businesses. Additionally, the AI can enhance creative projects, such as greeting cards, by suggesting layouts and styles, and correcting common print errors. The company plans to roll out more HP Print AI capabilities throughout 2025. The Build Workspace is available now in beta in the US and Europe, with a broader release expected to start in Spring 2025. HP Scan AI Enhanced is currently available in North America, most of Europe, Latin America, and parts of Asia. HP's announcement is based on a press release statement and the company's internal analysis, which positions HP Print AI as a pioneering solution in the intelligent printing space. The impact of these technologies on customer experience and business efficiency will be observed as they become widely available. In other recent news, HP Inc. has been making significant strides in the tech industry. The company recently announced an expansion of its Workforce Experience Platform and the introduction of new services, including AI services, aimed at enhancing productivity and reducing IT downtime. HP also introduced a series of next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) products and solutions, including AI-driven PCs, video conferencing tools, and a workstation solution for AI developers. In addition to these technological advancements, HP has reaffirmed its fiscal 2024 free cash flow forecast of $3.1 to $3.6 billion and announced a new $10 billion share buyback program. Despite these efforts, HP's third-quarter 2024 earnings fell short of expectations, primarily due to underperformance in its Print segment. However, the company did see a 2% year-over-year revenue increase. HP is also embroiled in a legal case seeking up to $4 billion in damages from the estate of the late British billionaire Mike Lynch, related to HP's acquisition of the British tech company Autonomy. Amid these developments, Loop Capital, TD Cowen, and Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) have maintained their Hold and Neutral ratings on HP's shares. These are the latest developments in the company's ongoing efforts to navigate the tech industry and maintain financial stability. Amid the launch of HP Inc.'s (NYSE: HPQ) innovative HP Print AI technology, the company's financial health and market performance provide a broader context for its ability to invest in and develop such pioneering solutions. With a market capitalization of $34.42 billion, HP stands as a significant player in the Technology Hardware, Storage & Peripherals industry. This stature is supported by a consistent history of shareholder returns, including a dividend that has been raised for seven consecutive years, signaling confidence in the company's long-term financial stability. Investors may take note of HP's commitment to returning value through both dividends and share repurchases, as management has been aggressively buying back shares, contributing to a high shareholder yield. This is complemented by a trading profile characterized by low price volatility, which could appeal to investors looking for stable returns in a volatile market. On the valuation front, HP's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio stands at 12.36, with an adjusted P/E ratio for the last twelve months as of Q3 2024 at 10.86. This relatively low P/E ratio, when paired with near-term earnings growth, suggests that the stock may be undervalued, especially considering the company's strong free cash flow yield. However, it's important to approach this with caution, as 11 analysts have revised their earnings expectations downwards for the upcoming period.
