We're unlikely to see a sequel to the OnePlus Open this year. But we are getting a new variant on the device that grabbed the best foldable phone crown away from Samsung and its two folding devices. OnePlus says it plans to release the OnePlus Open Apex Edition, a variation of the current foldable device from the phone maker. The Apex Edition debuts at a launch event next week on August 7, with a European launch following later this month. We're hopeful that the phone reaches the U.S., too, but we'll have to wait until that August 7 event for more details. The OnePlus Open Apex Edition will certain turn some heads with its Crimson Shadow colorway -- an apparent nod to the Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition camera. (Lens specialist Hasselblad has partnered with OnePlus to improve the camera performance on recent flagships, including the OnePlus Open.) But the OnePlus Open Apex Edition offers more than just a fresh coat of paint. While OnePlus didn't announce full details about the new model, it says that the phone will offer enhanced storage, AI image editing features, and additional security capabilities. Looking at the listing for the OnePlus Open Apex Edition on the OnePlus Store, there's also the hint of more RAM than the 16GB that came with the original OnePlus Open. When we reviewed that phone last year, we praised the OnePlus Open's take on multitasking, as well as its thin and light design. But the phone is very light on AI features -- something it sounds like OnePlus hopes to correct with the addition of new AI photo editing capabilities in the Apex Edition. The arrival of this version of the OnePlus Open comes less than a month after Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold 6, a direct rival to the OnePlus phone that features new Galaxy AI capabilities, including some optimized for phone with a foldable design. At the same time, Samsung also raised the price on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 by $100 over its predecessor, so it will be interesting to see how much the Apex Edition costs relative to the $1,699 OnePlus Open. It's certainly a competitive time for foldable phones that feature the open-book design found on the OnePlus Open and Galaxy Z Fold 6. Another phone that uses that design -- the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold -- has already been confirmed for the Made by Google hardware event on August 13. That phone is the sequel to the Pixel Fold that debuted last year and proved to be a formidable rival to the foldables from OnePlus and Samsung. As for a true OnePlus Open sequel, we're not expecting to see one this year due to reports that OnePlus is eyeing a 2025 launch for that version. Reportedly, OnePlus wants to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset in its OnePlus Open follow-up, and that new silicon isn't going to be available until Qualcomm announces it in October at its annual tech summit. The OnePlus Open is a fantastic device; even earning the top spot on our best foldable phones list. And later this month, the smartphone could potentially become even better as the company has recently revealed the cool-sounding OnePlus Open Apex Edition. Its design is mostly the same as before although it'll launch in a deep Crimson Shadow red, a color the company states was inspired by the Hasselblad 503CW 60 Years Victor. Much like the box camera, the revamped model sports a silver frame and an orange Alert Slider. It even has a vegan leather back cover, just like the OnePlus Open in Voyager Black. Details on the upgrade are sparse at the moment although we do know there will be some hardware improvements. A company representative told us it'll come "with enhanced storage, AI image editing [tools], and innovative security features". The product listing also suggests the Apex Edition has more memory. Exactly what is being added to the foldable is unknown. OnePlus is holding its cards close to its chest. If you go to the official website, you'll see the letter "X" next to the RAM and storage options where the numbers should be. That said, we can speculate a little bit on what could arrive. AI image editing brings to mind the Pixel 8's Magic Editor, which lets you move objects around in a photo. The OnePlus Open already has an AI Eraser for removing people and things. Something akin to Magic Editor could be the next evolution. As for storage, the Apex Edition could go from 512GB of space up to a full terabyte. It is hard to imagine what the new memory amount will be. 32GB of RAM seems unlikely. Instead, we may see it receive 24GB of RAM much like the China-only OnePlus Ace 3 Pro. If the company does this, the Apex Edition would be one of the first non-Chinese OnePlus phones to house more than 16GB of memory. Apart from those few changes, it doesn't appear the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will be all that different from the current model. You still get the two AMOLED displays. The chipset isn't being replaced nor will the rear camera array see a lens upgrade. Don't be too disappointed. Again, this is a really good foldable phone. At the very least, the user experience is becoming better, especially if the editing tools are as good as we think they'll be. There is a small downside to the Apex version. It's only guaranteed to receive "three major Android updates and four years of security updates from time of launch." The standard phone gets an extra year for both sets of software patches. The OnePlus Open first arrived in October 2023, and its features include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, a 6.31-inch cover screen, a 7.82-inch unfolded screen, and a triple-camera setup with Hasselblad tuning. Tech-wise, it puts it behind Samsung's latest Galaxy Z Fold 6, and if rumors that the OnePlus Open 2 has been delayed are accurate, the company needs to do something to keep its folding phone relevant in 2024. Why I think the OnePlus Open Apex is more than just a new color | Stuff

Foldables always rank among my most anticipated upcoming phones, and an impressive debut effort means anything OnePlus sits right at the top until rivals catch up. While it's not quite time for a full sequel, the new OnePlus Open Apex Edition sounds like it'll be the next best thing. The revised version of Stuff's favourite book-style clamshell is due imminently, with a fresh colour scheme and some notable internal upgrades. It'd be easy to write this off as just a lick of paint for a year-old phone - but when the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 feels like a fallow year effort, I'll happily take a few minor upgrades. OnePlus is being coy on those details right now, though, with a full reveal set for August 7. "Enhanced storage, AI image editing features, and innovative security features" are all promised, while a listing on the US OnePlus website suggests a RAM upgrade might also be on the way. I'm betting that means a 1TB capacity (the regular Open had 512GB), and a similar set of picture tweaking tools to the Oppo Reno 12 Pro (OnePlus and Oppo are so tightly linked now the Open is sold in certain territories as the Oppo Find N3). The new security features are more of a mystery. The open has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor; I doubt the Apex Edition will add in-display scanners to the mix, but I can dream of facial recognition secure enough for banking apps. As a photography fan, I'm more excited about the 'Crimson Shadow' colour scheme. It's apparently a nod to OnePlus' imaging partner Hasselblad; the firm's 503CW 60 Years Victor Red Edition film camera has the same vegan leather and diamond-like pattern. Expect orange trim on the alert slider, and silver frame to set it apart from the standard Open. It's also a great reminder that OnePlus absolutely schools Samsung when it comes to camera hardware. The rest of the hardware line-up is unlikely to change, meaning a year-old Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU and 4805mAh battery - but that's still plenty potent enough for multitasking, and enough juice for all day use. Factor in OnePlus' fantastic Open Canvas split-screen software and there's plenty here to give the Galaxy Z Fold6 reason to worry. If I was in the market for a top-tier foldable, I'd certainly wait until August 7 before breaking out the credit card.

This is basically the OnePlus Open, except that it now comes in a new red finish. According to OnePlus, this new "Crimson Shadow" variant is inspired by a special version of the Hasselblad 503CW camera. We have to say that it looks pretty sleek. In terms of hardware, it will be more or less identical to the original phone. We say "more or less" because it seems that it will come with some minor hardware upgrades. This includes new "enhanced storage", which could mean a faster storage system. It will also get new AI image editing features, and based on its website, it could come with more RAM. It's an interesting choice to release a new variant with minor hardware upgrades at this point in time. However, as some of you might have heard, the latest rumors are suggesting we won't get a OnePlus Open 2 this year. Instead, the handset could be delayed to 2025. This means that OnePlus is keen on keeping the OnePlus Open at the forefront of our minds. OnePlus says that the OnePlus Open Apex Edition will go on sale on the 7th of August, but pricing has not yet been confirmed.
