OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Agent to Mac App and Paid Subscribers

Your Mac just got smarter: OpenAI has added ChatGPT Agent to its Mac app

Now you can leave long tasks running in the background while you work on something else OpenAI has added its new Agent mode to its ChatGPT macOS app, and it's available right now, if you're a Plus subscriber. When you use ChatGPT through the Mac app, you'll see Agent as one of the options in the toolbar that lives under the prompt window. Select it, and now you're in Agent mode. OpenAI launched Agent mode, or ChatGPT Agent, as it is also called, last week, and it's a way to combine all the power of Deep Research with the agentic properties of its previous agent, called Operator. During the launch event, Sam Altman and co showed off several uses for Agent, such as planning big events, like a wedding, or producing a presentation based on a wide range of data it has to go off and find. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Agent as "ChatGPT that can think and act, proactively choosing from a toolbox of agentic skills to complete tasks for you using its own computer." OpenAI also makes a version of its app for Windows users, but this hasn't had Agent mode added yet. We have noticed that some people don't see the new Agent icon in their toolbar on the Mac app yet. Presumably, this will be fixed as the change rolls out, but if you are using the Mac app and you don't see an Agent button at the bottom of your interface, then don't worry, you can still access Agent mode. Simply type a / and a list of options will appear, one of which is 'Agent mode'. The desktop app version of ChatGPT is more integrated into the operating system than simply using ChatGPT in a web browser. For example, you can launch ChatGPT from any screen on your desktop with a keyboard shortcut. Use Option + Space on macOS or Alt + Space on Windows. The Desktop version of the ChatGPT app also features Advanced Voice Mode, so you can chat with ChatGPT in real time using the microphone. While we welcome the new ChatGPT Agent mode, it does open up your Mac to more vulnerabilities. This was something that the OpenAI team addressed at the launch, and Sam Altman said that there could be a new wave of threats that target AI agents who are simply trying to be helpful.

ChatGPT Agent Is Finally Available to OpenAI's Paid Subscribers

OpenAI plans to shut down the Operator agent in the coming weeks OpenAI launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) agent last week, which is finally rolling out to users now. On July 18, the San Francisco-based AI firm announced the launch of ChatGPT Agent, which can perform a wide range of tasks. However, nearly a week later, users still did not see an option to use the AI agent. On Thursday, the company announced that the feature rollout suffered a delay, and it was finally being added to the website and desktop apps of the paid subscribers. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the official handle of OpenAI stated that ChatGPT Agent has now been fully rolled out to all Plus, Pro, and Team users. "Sorry about the delay!" the post added. However, the company did not provide any reason behind the delay in rolling out the feature. Further, in the post's comment section, several users have highlighted not receiving the feature yet. ChatGPT Agent is considered a more advanced agentic tool compared to Operator, which arrived last year. Just like Operator, it can also perform tasks autonomously; however, while Operator was not capable of performing complicated tasks or tasks that required executing multiple commands, Agent can do them as well. As a result, OpenAI has announced that Operator will be sunset in the coming weeks. At the time of launch, the AI firm highlighted that the ChatGPT Agent can interact with websites and interfaces similar to Operator, synthesise information similar to Deep Research, and has native intelligence and conversational capability of ChatGPT. To complete tasks, the Agent has been equipped with access to a text-based browser to gather information, a visual browser to interact with the web, an integrated development environment (IDE) for coding-related tasks, and access to public application programming interfaces (APIs). It has its own virtual computer which provides it with access to all the above-mentioned tools. Apart from this, ChatGPT Agent can also use connectors to connect to third-party platforms and data hubs such as Gmail and GitHub. The agent also allows users to collaborate on tasks, and they can take over to log into an account, or even change the task. To monitor, users will see a small window in the chat interface and whatever the Agent does, it will show up.
